    Book Description

Army surgeon, ethnographer, and writer William Henry Corbusier (1844-1930) witnessed the transformation of the United States from young republic to world power. In Soldier, Surgeon, Scholar, the retired army officer and surgeon recounts his experiences, which include a New York City childhood, adolescence in gold-rush California, and army life from the wilds of Arizona to the jungles of the occupied Philippines.

In 1864, Corbusier joined the Union army as a contract surgeon, serving in the cavalry brigade under General Benjamin Grierson. His memoir covers seventeen military assignments in the South, the Northeast, the Great Lakes, and the American West, as well as two tours of duty in the Philippine Islands. Enthusiastically embracing these frequent relocations, Corbusier delighted in observing frontier peoples and studying natural history.

An ethnographer and ethnologist, Corbusier published studies of the languages and cultures of the Yavapai, the Sioux, and the Shoshoni. And his memoir records his observations on American Indian dances and ceremonies and his medical treatment of prominent figures, such as Sarah Winnemucca, Red Cloud, and American Horse. An account largely free of self-promotion and editorializing, Corbusier's memoir of his eight decades of widespread experiences is a fascinating work of extraordinary breadth. Corbusier's wife, Fanny, also recorded her reminiscences (Fanny Dunbar Corbusier: Recollection of Army Life in the Frontier West), and together, these companion memoirs present a unique view of frontier army life with two distinct viewpoints on the shared events of Fanny and William's marriage, as well as the separate topics that husband and wife, respectively, deemed worth recounting.

The symbols of industrial might—iron, steel, power and energy—come easily to a description of Essington Lewis, perhaps the most formative CEO of BHP, and director-general of munitions and aircraft production during World War II. A personality of immense force, he had a deep and abiding dislike of pretension and publicity, an obsessive regard for order, an impressive ability to focus on end goals while maintaining a grasp of detail and, above all, a driving energy and strength of purpose.

I really enjoyed this book it was funny and helpful.
The only book out ther that I found equally or even a little more helpful was Twelve Step Plan To Becomming an Actor by Dawn Lerman.

In a very honest and inspiring approach, Mr. Hooks paints a picture of the experience involved in auditioning for various media (theatre, film, commercials). Every beginning actor should read this book.

4 out of 5 stars A No-Nonsense Set of Guideposts to the Industry.......1999-05-13

You must read this book. Along w/ Michael Shurtleff's book "Audition" on theatre auditions, a book which Hooks recommends, this has been one of the best audition tools I've come across. The book will definately pay for itself if you take Ed's advice to heart and into action!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Audition Book Ever.......1998-07-15

This book is on of the best I have ever read. Not only does it make you extremely confident about your acting ability, but it's hilarious. Hooks has made such an amusing book that I would even suggest it to people uninterested in acting. The book gives you a feeling of, "The casting directors can take me or leave me. I'll just get famous with someone else. Hooks tells you all the facts, like what to wear to different auditions, how to relax yourself before one, and how to choose an agent. Any time you start to lose hope in acting, read this book!

      Book Description

An audition can be the most frightening - and most important -- ten minutes in a young artist's career. Now comes Don Greene, a remarkable teacher who has worked with Metropolitan Opera musicians, singers from around the country, and athletes including Greg Louganis -- all of whom know what it means to perform under extreme stress. Audition Success presents a groundbreaking method that has already made Greene one of the country's leading audition trainers. Combining specially designed self-tests and real-life examples from the careers of two performers, Audition Success will help performers understand what prevents them from nailing an audition and give them the tools to reach their goals.
Audition Success helps dispel the myth that you perform best by being completely relaxed. On the contrary, some anxiety isn't going to hurt, as long as you can make it work for you. Don Greene's techniques teach you how to monitor and control fear, and put your nervous energy to work. The beginning performer will find here the tools to prepare for the audition circuit, and the experienced performer will appreciate techniques that can turn good auditions into great ones.

5 out of 5 stars This book will help you win the job.......2007-08-24

Audition Success has changed the way I perform forever. It has instilled a very high confidence in my playing during auditions. Before, I was always nervous and doubtful about my auditions. But, after reading this book, I won the highest seat at my university orchestra audition. Thank you, Don Greene, for helping me achieve my dreams.

4 out of 5 stars NOT a Theatre Arts Book.......2007-02-08

I ordered this book because my horn teacher recommended it, and I was confused that it was labelled (A Theatre Arts Book), because it isn't. This book by Don Greene was developed specifically for the professional classical musician. The methods might be useful to people involved in the other performing arts, but that is not what it is specifically for.
As for the quality, I haven't yet finished the book but find it interesting and potentially useful. The connection between professional sports and professional musicians is interesting to explore. If you are debating between this book, and The Inner Game of Music by Barry Green, I would reccommend this book if you are a performance or serious student of classical music. There are fewer errors in this book, and it is more directly applicable. However, if you are more of an amateur, then I think that The Inner Game of Music would be more interesting to you.

5 out of 5 stars No nonsense - simply sound advice - a holistic approach.......2004-11-10

'Audition Success' by Don Greene is probably the best book I have read regarding audition preparation. It consists largely of transcribed interviews with two of Greene's clients. Using their experiences, the reader can craft his or her own audition preparation plan. It covers everything from methods to practice orchestral excerpts through to word association techniques which help performers settle in to the right mood the moment before they perform.

I am usually very skeptical about these sorts of books as there are many out there that are simply too wishy-washy. 'Audition Success' is a no nonsense approach that if read, understood, and applied, can be very helpful in making performers more successful in audition and other performing situations. A must read (and must do!) for all musicians taking auditions.

1 out of 5 stars Does not take a doctorate to come up with this stuff.......2002-11-08

i had to read this book for a class and I found it to be one of the most superficial books I have ever read. By talking to the young singer and the horn player, they tell him everything, and he just restates everything they just said in a more positive light. He turns Brian, the horn player, into a paranoid schizophrenic, making him give names (ethel and fred and bob) to his pre-audition problems. I gleaned nothing from this book and I would not reccomend it to anyone. The book is simply a transcript of a whole bunch of conversations. . . Greene could have at least put a LITTLE effort into it. I'll sum the book up in a sentance or two . . . if your nervous, put it all in perspective, you'll move on if you don't get the part. You have ups and downs, sometimes are better than others. So when your nervous just take a deep breath and look at reality, not this junk about rating your talent and nervousness on a profile of 1 to 100. You can't measure that kind of thing on a scale. All in all, DON'T BUY THIS BOOK, you are wasting your time.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for muscians!.......2002-03-24

The book is conversations of the author with two muscians. I really enjoyed that format and found the twist and turns insightful because it wasn't presented as do these six steps and you will be successful. I found the key ideas of a structured approach to training such as training under stress conditions, in mixed order, and multiple environments, and tapering applicable to anyone who must use skills to produce results--either singing on a stage or a presentation in a group. The one reviewer was right about the conversation, and maybe each chapter could have used a short summary of the techniques in that chapter. But if you read and label the technique when it is applied and then incorporate it into your skill training, I think you will find the book very helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Helpful but general.......2006-11-10

This book is a GREAT resource for those who are new to the audtioning process, or have not had a lot of classes that prepare one for audtions. It gives some great basic tips--things every actor should know before going out on an audtion. Most of it seemed like information that should be a no-brainer to most actors. There was a great section on breathing--I would recomend that to anyone!

      4 out of 5 stars A must have!.......2005-09-08

When someone is giving me advice or directions I want it brief and direct. In other words, show me the bottom line. Ten Minutes to the Audition, by Janice Lynde, is one that meets those important requirements. Lynde's book is directed at preparing for the audition but the advice is also applicable in many ways to applying for a job.

Lynde provides a checklist consisting of twenty concise do's and don'ts to a successful audition and the sound reasoning behind them. Throughout the book are brief stories that use word pictures to explain and support the checklist. Also included is a section titled: The Four Knows. It is also a section you must have.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a small, handy reference book that can be carried in your bag. If you are a performer or want to be, it you would serve you well to read and keep the book. In fact, it should be placed on your reference shelf. Do not loan it out because it will never be returned. I guarantee it. Let your friends buy their own.

5 out of 5 stars A simple checklist of advice for auditioning for a part.......2005-01-06

Written by an award-winning actress, Ten Minutes To The Audition is a simple checklist of practical advice for auditioning for a part. Simple tips to keep in mind and reminders to improve one's overall audition performance include "Your Performance Begins in the Reception Area", which stresses that confidence and attitude in the waiting room contributes to the odds of getting a part, and "Cold Readings", in which one is recommended to create a character from the inside out and be specific, and "The Three Nevers" - never panic if asked to read for another part, never react to no reaction, and never apologize for one's reading. A superb last-minute primer and enthusiastically recommended for anyone braving an audtion, whether for a professional acting job or local community theater.

      5 out of 5 stars It Works!.......2004-11-19

I gave this book to a friend as a gift. He read it and applied a lot of the relaxation techniques before going into an audition. Of course there's no way to know whether or not the book's responsible for his success, but he seems to think it's helpful in getting him some commercial callbacks. There are a lot of tips in it that people don't usually think about -- like remembering to breathe (!).

I'd highly recommend this as a stocking stuffer for the aspiring actor or actress in your life.

3 out of 5 stars It's has some useful info.......2001-09-26

I personally didn't find it too useful because I think any average person already knows half of the information in that book. He didn't list any names of agents or photograghers, etc. in his book, but I guess there were good points. He was very honest and up front, telling the readers what to expect and what agents and producers are looking for in an actor/actress. He talked about the different types of actors, like screen actors, stage actors, and extras, but didn't go into a great detail about anything in particular. Overall, I'd say it's an okay beginning book, but I would actually recommmend Acting is Everything, 9th edition over Acting Professionally because it is much more thorough, helpful and informative.

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of the acting business.......2000-03-16

Mr. Cohen has in no uncertain terms assembled a tome of infinite wisdom concerning the professional acting world. He does not jump up and down like a cheerleader yelling "you can DO it!" nor does he tell you to give up on the whole nasty business. What he does do is tell you the hard truth about the nasty business, how nasty it is, what's real, and what there is to give hope. The advice is clear and unambiguous, such that no one will have a problem knowing what is the right direction for them after reading. Every actor, aspiring and seasoned, should keep this book by his or her side and read it often.

How to Completely Blow Your Competition Away at Any Audition shows you the tips and tricks that professional auditioners use to get the parts. From that first call from your agent to what to do after the audition to set yourself apart from the crowd, this book shows you how to leave your competition behind.

Remember you will never get that Oscar or Emmy if you canÂ't get past that audition door.

The stuff in this book is common sense and really is nothing most people who want to be actors don't aleady know. There is a list of agents etc. at the end of the book but you can get more updated names from Ross Reports. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Still one of the best ..........2006-12-05

I have been collecting Thai cookbooks for years - and I still go back to this one. Starting eating Thai food in LA, CA - where you could get the "real" thing. It was hard to find Thai cookbooks back then and this was one of the first available. It isn't fancy like the newer cookbooks, but I don't buy based on them being a "coffee table book". "Pad Thai" is like spagetti (sp), so many variations on a theme - the recipe in this book is good, and I adjust it to suit my tastes. For a real delight, try her soup recipes - wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars The Real Deal.......2003-03-04

I was an exchange student in Thailand in 1975. I was lucky enough to live in two homes during that year's stay that had outstanding cooks, one in an affluent home and one on a ranch/factory where I ate in the "executive" dining room three times a day. Meals would usually consist of 4 or 5 entrees, so during that year I sampled about every conceivable Thai recipe.

Jennifer Brennan's book's recipes produce the taste of real Thai cooking. If you want to cook Thai food like you get in a Thai home or on the streets in Thailand this is the book for you. Start with the Green Chicken Curry. For me this is the acid test, any Thai restaurant or cookbook that doesn't do curry right should be avoided. Other recipes I think are great are the Combination Fried Rice, Hot & Sour Shrimp Soup, Braised Chicken in Spices(outstanding), Chicken in Peanut Sauce, Sate, Thai Beef Salad(just like a Bangkok restaurant), Sweet & Sour Cucumbers, and Chopped Beef with Garnishes.

Unfortunately, many Thai cookbooks focus on glitzy pictures and the "Thai" food that you find in American Thai restaurants. The only time I every ate Pad Thai in Thailand was on a Western Hotel's tourist lunch buffet. If you spend the time to make your own curry pastes and cook these curries you will be rewarded. You will have authentic Thai food. This book is your guide to the real deal!

3 out of 5 stars Ketchup in Pad Thai???.......2002-10-08

I've had this book for years and although there's a lot that's good about it (and the recipes are tasty) this book has a pretty typical problem: it was written in 1981. Most experienced cooks know that cookbooks from this time period suffered from at least one of two problems: 1 (and this is not this book's problem) the confusion that oleo or veggie oil is butter or 2 (and this is this book's problem) a general lack of availability of authentic ingredients which leads to ridiculous substitutions which just don't quite work. No matter how many great stories JB tells, she still substitutes ketchup for tamarind paste and as much as I love my Pittsburgher Heinz 57 Lovin' soul, ketchup ain't tamarind.

Otherwise, not a bad cookbook, which I do reference often, if just to read JB's stories.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting information and recipes, but format needs work........2000-12-26

Recipes would be more user-friendly if formatted to make it possible to, at a glance, peruse the steps to follow, rather than have to read through the paragraphs and try to separate out the "to do" information. We like recipes to appear on one page, if possible, or at least to lay out so that ingredients and at least most of the preparation steps appear together.

Recipes could be simplified by using--or at least pointing out-- possible shortcuts making use of products available through Thai grocers. This cookbook would make Thai cooking more accessible if it informed users/cooks that these products are an option that in many cases, could simplify the recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic and Easy.......2000-07-13

We spent six weeks in Thailand, traveling the country from top to bottom. We kept a daily diary based upon what we ate and where we ate it. Most of the places we ate at were tiny cafe-style shops with one person both cooking and running the place. Loving Thai food, I made copious notes of the ingredients I could identify by sight, and asked the cook to point to ingredients I didn't understand. If he/she didn't have the product, I would write out a phonetic pronounciation of the Thai word, then go to the local market and ask the merchants to show me this item. (Needless to say, the vendors had a good laugh at my wild gesturing and mis-pronunciation.) Thailand was a great adventure and a feast for the palate. I came home with a dozen recipes of my favorite foods and went straight to the bookstore to compare the ingredients of "my" recipes with those of the Thai cookbooks available. Jennifer was dead-on. Her recipes were almost identical in simple ingredient composition and perfectly replicated the fresh flavors we had so recently experienced. Simple, delicious, and always successful. Jennifer demonstrates that good Thai cooking can be easy!
