Fascinating, thrilling history lesson -- excellent.......2007-08-23
This is one of the best books I've ever read, certainly one of John Ravage's finest. It had been many years since I'd learned about the Teapot Dome Scandal -- now I could read about all the intrigue, the setting, the people involved -- and all written so that it took me there, hurled me back in time so I shared the scene, the people, the incidents all written in excellent literary style. I recommend this powerful book to every age group, whether one feels they've read about the incidents before. John Ravage's take on the time, the place, the people, plus his excellent writing ability is a major achievement.
Ravage does it again !.......2007-06-14
Jack Ravage's "Slick and the Duchess" is a great read. He knows how to take a tale, flesh it out and bring it to life. This is a story well told. The story of greed and mischief in high places certainly resonates with what is going on in Washington D.C. currently. Jack makes his characters live.
Get the book; you'll enjoy it.
A slick tale well told.......2007-06-02
Having lived in both Wyoming and Colorado I found this to be a well told tale of both places. The characters and settings are well developed to make it easy to put yourself in the story. I found that the book flowing well, and kept my interest in the storyline, making it easy to read quickly. The book is well researched and the the facts make the story more understandable with smooth transitions between the parts. I would recommend this book for readers looking for and exciting novel that is fun to get into.

A pretty good Destroyer novel........1998-05-06
I enjoyed this book. It isn't the best book in the series, but it's definitely a fun one. If you can find a copy, check it out.
Book Description
Tom Slick was a legend among the "independents"--those who hunted for oil the way mountain men hunted for furs. Ray Miles traces the growth of Slick's career and the modern petroleum industry, including the oil conservation movement, of which Slick was an early proponent. He examines the first generation of oilmen who sought fortunes in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas and looks at Slick's unique hands-on business style of brokering on street corners and eschewing stockholders and board members. In 1929, Slick sold his Oklahoma holdings in the Prairie Oil and Gas Company--the largest sale of oil properties by an individual to that date.
". . . Miles gives us a highly readable biography of an intriguing person and a welcome addition to the history of oil's first century."--Southwestern Historical Quarterly
" . . . an informative and well-written account of the life of one of the most successful and best known independents of an earlier time. It belongs on the shelf of any reader with special interest in the histories of the domestic oil industry and of Oklahoma."--Western Historical Quarterly

Book Description
Ricky Williams: Dreadlocks to Ditka is the first book about college football's Heisman Trophy winner and the first-round draft pick of Coach Mike Ditka's New Orleans Saints. Ditka coveted 1998's Heisman Trophy winner so much that he traded all of the Saints' 1999 draft picks for the right to choose the former University of Texas star. From his prep days in San Diego as an all-sports star to his record-breaking career with the Longhorns, Williams has had to overcome personal obstacles his entire life. He's done so, however, with grace, class, and style, even though his trademark dreadlocks and pierced tongue may present a different persona. Ditka proclaimed Williams the National Football League's next superstar.
Customer Reviews:
Richardson's book a brilliant look at a mysterious person.......2000-05-15
This book combines two of the most sought-after items in a biography. First, in Williams, you have an intriguing, mysterious figure who not many people have much information on. Yes, he won the Heisman trophy and he is, publically, seen as a good person.
What Richardson, the most respected college sports writer in the country, is able to do is look beyond the public perception and give readers a sense of what makes Williams tick and why Williams ticks the way he does.
This book sets the stage for Williams in New Orleans. It is set before Williams' rookie year with the Saints and controversial coach Mike Ditka. After reading this book, you'll understand why Williams had the turbulent year and subsequent problems.
Through a network of what seem to be unparalled contacts, Richardson is able to gain an insight on Williams the college player that has never before been exposed. He sets the table for Williams' rookie year. Much of the book explains how Williams was handled in college at Texas and why his transition to the real world has been so difficult.
In short, this book is a must for any pro football fan. On a grand scale, it is much more than a work about Ricky Williams and the Saints. It chronicles the reasons college players have such a difficult time making the trasition to the professional level and explains why football is only part of that equation.

A Chicago Bear - Monster of the Midway.......2001-12-29
Mike Ditka didn't always have good times, or good luck. What Mike has is drive, hope, goals, believe in himself and some great experiences with family, friends & team mates.
It wasn't always easy playing hurt, but Mike endured tremendous odds and kept coming back time after time.
Mike had the best of his athletic and human abilities surface time after time. He is a legend and then some. Play with him, enjoy the game. Play against him and feel the pain.

Other Books.......2007-09-04
Ditka : an Autobiography by Mike Ditka is boofy old Iron Mike's story. He tells what it was like to be a tough guy and a hardarse, and to plan with ridiculous injury levels and what that did to him.
Oh yeah, and a bit on that whole coaching and Superbowl thing as well. Not too bad for this sort of book.
TOUGH AND HARD NOSED.......2002-02-24
DITKA IS A VERY ENJOYABLE BOOK. MR. DITKA DOES A GREAT JOB TELLING THE STORY OF THIS LIFE AND CAREER. I FOUND HIS OPINIONS AND INSIGHT VERY HUMAN AND INTENSE. HE WAS CERTAINLY A GLADIATOR ON THE FIELD AND A TAKE NOTHING FROM NOBODY COACH. I REALLY LIKE HIS STYLE AND HONESTY IN THIS BOOK. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL FOOTBALL FANS AND ESPECIALLY FOR BEAR FANS. HE IS ONE OF THE FIVE GREATEST BEARS OF THE MODERN ERA HALAS, SAYERS, PAYTON, BUTKUS, BEING THE OTHERS. A MUST READ
a revealing and candid autobiography.......1998-07-08
The fiery New Orleans Saints head coach provides fans with an insightful look on his childhood, playing career with the Bears, Eagles and Cowboys and transformation from an assistant coach to a head coach. A Page-Turning Story of Triumph Over Disability.......2004-02-05
I read this book over the course of four days -- record time for me -- since I took every opportunity to pick it up. The book represents the triumph of human determination to overcome disease and an overwhelming variety of disabilities. The author's attitude is amazing, as he shows gratefulness for every opportunity and challenge that comes his way. I also appreciated his insistence on maintaining his own unique approach to life and its challenges, despite what the experts had to say. I hope that Darryl succeeds in achieving his dreams of returning to Merrill Lynch -- if he really feels that is still where his call is -- getting married, and starting a family.
'Forces' you to look at life from another perspective..........2003-01-14
All of us can become disechanted with life on occasion, but Force a Miracle "forces" you to look at life from a different perspective, and I guarantee after reading this book you'll come away a better person. I know (or at least I "think") I did!
A MUST-READ!.......2003-01-14
Every so often a book comes along that begs you to read it. This is that book! Filled with everyday observations that make you stop and think just how lucky you are, it's part memoir, part self-help, part funny papers, ALL inspiring. I urge you to check it out whenever you get to thinking, "Why does this only happen to ME?" As my wife says, "We don't know what real problems are." This book really proves that...
Inspiring.......2002-08-09
A testament to the inner human strength to overcome extreme
adversity, to triumph and continue a worthwhile and self-rewarding life. A story to make us appreciate life and take nothing for granted. Darryl is truly an inspiration. Extremely well written infused with a self-deprecating sense of humor - a must read!

Book Description
The 1985 Bears set a standard for success which hasn't been matched in the past quarter century. The Monsters of the Midway did not only demolish the New England Patriots 46-10 in Super Bowl XX, they dominated the NFL that season the way few teams have in the history of the sport. The Bears finished the regular season with a gleaming 15-1 record, perfect but for a slip-up on Dec. 2 in Miami. In a span of three games in November, the Bears defeated Detroit, Dallas, and Atlanta by a combined score of 104-3. In Reflections on the 1985 Bears, fans get a revealing look at Chicago's last Super Bowl champion through the eyes of the team's head coach. Coach Ditka vividly describes the emotion, humor, and inner turmoil of his team from quarterback Jim McMahon's arrival in training camp with a Mohawk haircut through the team's hit single, "The Super Bowl Shuffle" through their eventual Super Bowl triumph in New Orleans.

Customer Reviews:
more like a summary book.......2007-01-11
it is a good book for general practicionaires, but not for rheumatologists.
also helpful for nurses in rheumatology departments.
Definitely worth having if you're interested in Rheumatology.......2006-01-28
In medical school, rheumatology is one of those subjects that most medical students cannot really conceptualize and end up memorizing a list of autoimmune diseases along with their specific antibodies. This book has the potential to change this view.
I read this book while doing a Rheumatology rotation during my senior year and at the time it was considered the Rheumatology Bible by the attendings. For me, this book has been the best place to understand both the biological basis of rheumatic diseases and the clinical application of that knowledge.
This book is for anyone who is interested in understanding Rheumatic Diseases on a deeper level. I think such understanding is essential to any internist regardless of what his or her subspeciality is.
NICE BOOK WITH PRACTICAL ORIENTATION.......2003-01-30
Embellished with colourful figures and tables, this "Primer on the Rheumatic Diseases" handled general rheumatology in way that would appeal to both clinicians and students. Its practical orientation include the diagnosis and management of all sorts of rheumatic disorders.
It familiarizes its reader with the different patterns of disease progression, before offering diagnostic and therapeutic options. It is a fine book, whose coverage of physiotherapy and pain assessment are more than satisfactory.
Certainly good but..........2003-01-06
...getting too long. This was one of the most useful little books a med student could hope for, a really concise look into a single subject area. I used it for my 4th year elective, then the next edition for my Rheum rotation as a PGY-II, and then throughout Fellowship. I give the latest edition to each med student who rotates through our Rheum clinic, but I find they are less and less impressed by it as the size of the Primer approaches that of a textbook. The information is still excellent, but I think it's getting too big for the niche it has always occupied. If you really want that much info, buy the latest Kelley.
A must read for all medical students and aspiring MDs.......2002-01-23
This book is a true masterpiece in its succint, yet elegant synopsis of the chief disorders of rheumatology. The clinical correlations are salient and the abundance of photographs and tables provide the reader with a valuable and powerful tool in their conquest of medical illness.
Book Description
The best vegetarian cookbook, from the greatest vegetarian chef .
"This is not only the best vegetarian restaurant in Ireland, but one of the best restaurants of any kind." So states Frommers in their 2003 Guide to Ireland. Café Paradiso is an unassuming little restaurant in the heart of Cork City in Ireland yet it has been hailed far and wide as "the best vegetarian restaurant in Europe" and so is a contender for best vegetarian restaurant in the world. Fodors claims it "serves Mediterranean-style food, which is so tasty that even dedicated meat-eaters forget it's vegetarian". The reason for all this praise is the owner and chef, Denis Cotter, a quiet unassuming man, not unlike his restaurant, who, like all great chefs, is an obsessive. His obsession is to create the most exciting vegetarian dishes possible with the freshest possible produce, an ambition he has realized with remarkable success. In this book he serves up 140 recipes that make the very best of whatever vegetables are freshest at any given time of the year. Cotter's The Café Paradiso Cookbook has been hailed, in the Bridgestone Guide to Ireland, as "the best cookbook ever written by a working chef."
Winner of the Gourmand World Cookbooks Award for Best Vegetarian Cookbook
Customer Reviews:
Meatless Majesty.......2007-01-13
I've eaten often at Cafe Paradiso in Cork. Everytime I go I find something more innovative and more delicious. Even if you're not a vegetarian, and I'm not, you won't miss the meat in these beautifully planned meals. I've got several of Denis's cookbooks; this is the first one I've gotten in the US and having the measurement conversions is GREAT. There's a terrific range from straight forward and simple, to eye-dazzling and complex. Dig in.
Food for thought.......2006-06-09
Cafe Paradiso is unquestionably one of the best restaurants in the whole of Ireland; it should be a priority on the itinerary of anyone planning a visit. Even diehard carnivores have loved this place: I've taken many of them there when they've visited me in Cork, and they always come away from the table singing its praises!
As a result, I can't recommend this cookbook enough for anyone interested in doing more with their veg than just a slab of butter and some garlic. This book is just a preview of what is by far a culinary trip through the best vegetable, fruit and dairy produce in all of the island. Of course, being that the restaurant is a Cork-based institution, some of the ingredients Denis specifies in the book (Gabriel cheese, for example) will only be available locally; however, there is always room for experimentation in the recipes and often times, Denis himself will do so, changing one or two ingredients of what we locals feel is a staple dish to try something new. Denis Cotter uses some interesting combinations (lemon and liquorice with basil, to name one) in his cooking, which is one of the main reasons that the restaurant has become the talk of the vegetarian world. The marriage of flavours found his recipes are so vivid and palatable that it's like eating a rainbow. Of course, the restaurant's wine list is a particular complement to the food! (All the more reason to book those tickets to Cork...)
great restaurant, great cookery book.......2006-03-26
I love meat but really you don't miss the meat from these recipes, they are brilliant. Dennis Cotter uses a lot of squash and sweet potatoes, in my opinion overlooked in many cookery books.
The desserts are great too.
A Truly Inspring Coookbook.......2005-03-21
While perusing cookbooks recently in the bookstore, I was intrigued by the description on the inside cover of this book and decided to keep reading. I was thrilled by the scrumptious and healthy recipes - just wait until you see the luscious food photography! The food photography is incredibly beautiful- it makes your mouth water just to look at this book! The recipes are arranged by the seasons, which I find very useful. This book was the winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for the Best Vegetarian Cookbook in the World in 2003.
This is an exquisite book- I could tell from the first pages on that it was a labor of love. Chef Cotter owns the Café Paradiso which is describes as an "unassuming little restaurant in the heart of Cork City in Ireland and has been called the "best vegetarian restaurant in Europe"...." and one of the best restaurants of any kind" by Frommer. I recently corresponded with Denis by email to tell him hos much I enjoyed his book and I must say that he sent me one of the nicest notes in return. I was delighted to receive his kind reply.
So, Denis utilized the best fresh vegetables, cheeses and nuts, just to name a few ingredients, in such inventive ways that most of us would never even imagine. His gratin of roast pumpkin, leeks, corn and hazelnuts in a Gabriel cream cheese is heaven on earth! There are influences from the Far East, from the Mediterranean and from Middle Eastern cuisines. There is truly something for everyone's palate.
Desserts know no limits - try the Chocolate pecan pie with whiskey ice cream and darling clementines. Denis recommends using "Irish whiskey" to poach the clementines since the "Irish whiskey is very smooth and clean."
You can tell that he has spent many, many hours developing and testing these recipes so that the end results are masterful. And they are really worth for you to try something so extra-ordinary. He spells out each step for you - the instructions are very well written and easy to understand and make.
This book is also a great incentive for you to expand your culinary skills- without being overly difficult.
I have to say this is the best cookbook I have bought in a very long time and recommend that you buy it right away. You'll be very pleased that you did.
Spectacular Vegetarian Creations.......2004-05-20
This vegetarian cookbook is for those who've gone as far as they can with basic, everyday, fast-and-easy, minimal-ingredient vego cooking and now want new, exciting, taste challenges.
The recipes are ideal for entertaining, perfect for special family occasions or romantic dinners, and great for those days when you feel like pushing the envelope and creating something a little more complicated than normal. Having said that, I should stress that none of the recipes are beyond the scope of those who have mastered the basics of cooking.
Author Denis Cotter, who owns Cafe Paradiso, an internationally renowned restaurantin Cork City, Ireland, leads readers on a culinary adventure through the seasons. In spring, you can enjoy dishes such as Roast Globe Artichoke With Sheep's Cheese and Pinenuts, Wilted Greens and Tomato Pesto (well worth the effort), or a simple Broad (Fava) Bean, Feta and Basil Mash. During summer, use the abundance of squash (zucchini, patty pan, butternut etc) to create Summer Squash Salad With Cashews, Coconut, Yoghurt, Lime, Ginger and Coriander, and the tomato harvest to make Tomato Saffron Ricotta and Olive Tart. For a dessert-to-die-for,try Oven-Roasted Peaches With Lavender and Honey Ice Cream And Pistachio Biscotti. When the weather cools and the leaves turn, make Pan-Fried Mushrooms in Sage and Cider Cream With a Potato, Parsnip and Wild Rice Cake And Beetroot Relish; Honey-Roasted Butternut With Avocado-Lime Salsa and Green Curry of Cauliflower and Beans; or Gratin of Roast Pumpkin, Leeks, Sweetcorn and Hazelnuts. For winter, boring old Brussels sprouts are transformed into gourmet status in Brussels Sprouts With Tomato, Ginger and Coriander. Or rev up the tastebuds with Carrot and Cabbage Spring Rolls With a Pomegranate, Mint and Yoghurt Sauce.
This is just a tiny sampling of the many recipes, all of which include detailed instructions. Beautiful photographs of the produce and the recipes illustrate the book, and Mr Cotter interweaves stories about the restaurant, his life and his culinary discoveries throughout.
This book surely ranks as one of the greatest celebrations of seasonal produce ever.
