This is the eloquent, moving story of an American family from the end of the Depression through today, told largely through the remarkable World War II letters of father James Quirk.

How Did I Miss This One?.......2001-08-26
Wars and Peace is the work of a Vietnam Veteran, Rory Quirk, whose father, James served in WWII and later Korea, as a behind-the-scenes major player. For a seemingly humble, low-keyed guy, James is an eloquent writer as is his wife, Elizabeth; although we see far too little of her work, since it was apparently difficult for James to hang onto her letters as he traveled the front with the likes of Generals Bradley, Paton and Ridgeway. James' letters offer never before published insights into these leaders with some comical anecdotes about Paton that suggest we heard more of Quirk than Paton in earlier press releases, in stark, often amusing, contrast to post-Quirk Paton statements. The Korean letters, researched painstakingly by the younger Quirk, reveal frightening historic events that need to be responded to by those who might still know the truth. Matthew Ridgeway, about whom I read nothing in my history books, is depicted as an incredible leader and strategist deserving of great recognition and adulation. On the other hand, General MacArthur; about whom we spent so much time; comes off as an egotistical, narcissistic insubordinate. Go figure. It would have been good to hear and know more of Elizabeth Quirk, whose letters on VE day and the first birthday of their son, Rory, portray an intense love and loneliness that suggests that perhaps this is all we need to know. This is Elizabeth. Quirk brings us through the third family war with the devastating effect his service in Vietnam had on his father, the loyal patriot. Contrasted are his views of this war then and now, through his memories of 3 former college classmates who died young for something we either don't understand, or worse, for nothing at all. Quirk's father wrote his letters almost 60 years ago and they are remarkable if one thinks of his writing them late at night after, harrowing experiences. We are fortunate to read them unedited. It is uncanny to detect the similarity of style if not language, between father and son who have not exchanged a word in over 30 years. Quirk connects these human stories with flawless historical research, offering a context to the events depicted in the letters. I still don't know how I missed this when it came out. I hope it will be out in paper soon and in print large enough for seniors. It should be on tape for the visually impaired who may well hear this as their last human connection to their past. And if they haven't yet, and I believe I would have seen it, The New York Times must review this important work. This would be great book club material for serious readers interested in the human impact of war beyond the obvious.
By A Family of Gifted Writers.......1999-12-02
This is a family memoir, in the form of parents' letters and a son's narrative, gracefully written by three individuals who lives were touched by World War II, Korea, and Vietnam: a father, who served with Bradley, Patton, and Ridgeway; a loving and supportive wife who served on the homefront; and a son who served as a U.S. Army Ranger in Vietnam. It's a fine memoir of an American family's courage and sense of duty during this American century.
Touching. Inspirational. Duty. Success. And family........1999-09-17
A great inspirational book for young and older families. After all is said and done, whether success is achieved through financial rewards or attainment of immense power, the most cherished parts of our life are, and should be, our loved ones.
Brilliantly told important American tale........1999-09-01
An emotional and gripping story quintissential to the 20th century American family experience. I loved every page.
A brilliant and poignant ribute to an American family........1999-08-25
This is a fascinating and brilliantly written book that allows you to a feel very close to seminal American wars. This private but heroic family deserves our attention,

Best biography on Thomas Henry Huxley to date.......2004-06-05
This splendid, relatively terse, tome on the life and career of Thomas Henry Huxley, the celebrated 19th Century English biologist, is a masterpiece of splendid scholarship and prose by its author, Sherrie L. Lyons. Lyons makes a persuasive case showing how Huxley's strict adherence to the scientific method led eventually to the acrimonious feud between him and Richard Owen, the eminent anatomist of the mid 19th Century. Lyons shows how Huxley gradually shifted his allegience from the German structuralist view championed by Owen to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution via natural selection, but at the same time recognizing some major pitfalls to Darwin's theory, most notably the significance of hybrid sterility. Huxley's legitimate criticisms of natural selection led Darwin to embark upon an ambitious research program - with the assistance of other leading British scientists - to study hybrid sterility, among others, resulting in a further strengthening - not weakening - of Darwin's original concept of natural selection. Lyons notes how the discoveries of important fossils in the 1860's with ample evidence of gradual transitions between species eventually led to Huxley's shift from a strict saltationalist view of the origin of species that was greatly at odds with natural selection to fully embracing Darwin's concept of natural selection as a gradual evolutionary process. She also points out that Huxley, long before Darwin himself, was willing to seize the initiative and note the strong kinship of the great apes with Man, making this point in public lectures, popular articles and finally, a book published in 1864, seven years prior to Darwin's "The Descent of Man". Last, but not least, Lyons notes how Huxley's original concerns regarding natural selection are still being investigated by evolutionary biologists - most notably paleontologists and developmental biologists - today.
Biography of an early Darwin critic..........2001-01-12
This fascinating and important biography of T.H.Huxley shows almost another Huxley from the one we associate with the Darwinian tradition. Huxley is an important figure, for in many ways he saw more clearly than Darwin, and current biology is catching up with him. The author begins by noting that 'while Huxley enthusiastically accepted the idea of descent with modification, he was critical of the two central components of Darwin's theory: gradualism and natural selection'. As the author notes, Huxley warned Darwin on the eve of publication that he had burdened his theory unnecessarily with the dictum, natura non facit saltum. This eye opening account reveals a Huxley who could step from a time machine into the contemporary debates on evolution, as the issues that were clearly in the background to Darwin's public triumph resurface with renewed force. Indeed, we discover that Huxley was close also to the developmental tradition with his interest in morphology and considerations of type.
It is a strange testimony to the telescoped pictures we have as non-specialists dependent on hurried summaries that this alternate side of Huxley should have remained unclear throughout the whole Darwin debate. And it is a reminder that the debate is one of selective emphasis of issues that were present from the beginning and never enter the mythical accounts of the Wilberforce debate. This biography, from Prometheus books no less, seems a bellwether for a paradigm in transition. Must reading.
Cf. also Adrian Desmond's Huxley, for a fuller picture of the nineteenth century background of culture and ideology.
A superbly researched and engagingly written biography........2000-03-04
Sherrie L. Lyons' Thomas Henry Huxley provides an excellent history of the English biologist who was the foremost defender of Darwin's theory of evolution. His scientific background and contributions are revealed in an excellent survey.

Classic Insights, Ponderously Written.......2007-09-16
There are a few gems of agnostic wisdom in this book, which concisely state Huxley's case for affirming his agnostic views - that he is without full or final proof or substantiation of the Bible, or of Jesus. For this, the book needs to be read and commended. One could only wish, however, that Huxley spared the ponderously ornate style of English prose that was the habit of the day. This is a good read, but not always an easy read, and certainly if it has engaging moments it also has its tedious ones as well. If Huxley too easily dismisses or reduces religious faith to matter of proof, he at least wisely points out that we must distinguish what faith and facts are.
one of my favorite authors.......2004-06-22
Huxley is one of my favorite authors. I haven't read this book but I have read Science and Christian Tradition from which most of these essays are derived. Stephen J. Gould said of Huxley, "Great and passionate writing does not only appear in novels. As a prose stylist, a few nineteenth-century scientists [Playfair, Lyell, and Huxley in particular] rank with the finest Victorian fiction writers." I couldn't agree more.
Brilliant.......1999-11-27
The chapters in this book mainly come from Huxley's much larger "Science and the Christian Tradition". If you can get a hold of this book I highly recommend reading it; it takes the reader much farther than "Agnosticism and Christianity". If you cannot find the larger, then read this book. Huxley very matter of factly lays out why the bible cannot be taken as an authoritative source on its own.
Evolution, Epistemology, and Agnosticism According to Huxley.......1998-02-03
The topic of Agnosticism consumes a relatively minor part of this book. It is interesting to read Huxley's exposition on Darwin's theory of evolution and how he makes the case for why it is more plausible than any other theory. While some of what he says would require modification in light of modern evolutionary thought, most of his arguments (using data from anthropology, archaeology, biology, embryology, genetics, geology, etc.) are still valid. Other essays include discussions on epistemology especially with regard to supernaturalism and claims of miracles. Only in the last several pages does Huxley elaborate on the origin and meaning of Agnosticism. In fact, he seems almost reluctant to descend into the discussion. He indulges the reader nevertheless and does a stupendous job of stating the case. A pleasant read on a rainy day.

Book Description
This book examines the persona of the "man of science" in the Victorian period as it was shaped by Thomas Huxley, the leading British naturalist and notorious popularizer of Darwinian theory. It demonstrates how the scientific practitioner was regarded as a moral and religious figure; simultaneously considered to be the epitome of the secular, professional scientist. Breaking with traditional biographies, this fascinating portrait treats Huxley as the consummate British "man of science" and reflects on the historical significance of scientific authority.

Academic.......2006-03-10
I will come back and give a more thorough review the next time I visit the site, but in the absence of any other commments I will quickly throw down some of my observations.
First: This book is less of a pleasure read as it is an academic History of Science read. It feels as though this is White's dissertation papers (or perhaps his dissertation). To that extent, while it is a very thoughtful piece, it feels as though White is trying to bend history so as to create a problem that academic scrutiny can solve.
Second: There is invaluable interpretation of Thomas Huxley as an idea (if not an ideologue) and as a visionary who intended to
Third: This may sound like a repetition of the first point, but passages of this book feel forced. Believe me, I read this as part of honors coursework and even incorporated it into my final paper and I felt as though I was forcing things when I was referencing it (although the professor apparently did not think that my interpretation was forced and gave me an 'A' on that paper).
That said, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in turning points in the History of Science.
Book Description
Selected as one of the eleven Best Books of 1997 by the Editors of The New York Times Book Review.
Champion of modern education, creator of an intellectually dominated profession, T.H. Huxley epitomized the rise of the middle classes as they clawed power from the Anglican elite. Written with enormous zest and passion, Huxley is about the making of our modern Darwinian world.

Great Bio! We Could Sure Use a Huxley Today in USA!.......2005-09-07
What a fine book and bio! The author stated that he is most interested in placing TH Huxley into the context of his times, late 19th Century England, and the world, and he succeeds completely! From THH's humble origins with descriptions of the slums of 1840's London, through the amazing Rattlesnake voyage to Australia and New Guinea, and onward to the world's #1 Iconoclast (Nietzsche came a little later), this book reads like the best novel, with tons of biology, paleontology, history of science, theological debunking, and English history all included. Not to mention the sometimes difficult financial and family life of the founder of the famous 20th century Huxleys. THH was obvious as close to a universal scientific genius and spokeman as we'll ever have! Very strange how his many claims for science in school were accepted in Britain by the 1890's, but are still controversial in 2000's USA!
One of the best science biographies ever.......2005-06-16
I've read Adrian Desmond's Huxley biography several times since its initial publication a decade ago. When I first read it, I thought it was a tour de force; ten years later, it still holds up.
Desmond is a brilliant biographer: his "Darwin" (co-authored with James Moore) and his studies of Robert Owen have been deeply influential among historians of science. The difference between those books and this one, though, is that Desmond obviously likes Huxley: he admires the young Huxley's drive and ambition; his willingness to take risks; his ferocious, furious determination to succeed in despite lack of connections or inheritance (Victorian Britain wasn't so far from Jane Austen when Huxley was striking out on his own); and his incredible success. As much as any single individual, Huxley deserves credit for creating our modern notion of what science can do, and how scientists should be treated-- by the state, by the general public, by universities. It's the bulldog's world; we just live in it.
The hip-hop criticism is astute. The book is actually filled with references to earlier histories of science: nearly every page has a play on the title of some book or article. Insiders will get them; apparently they're noticeable, but distracting, to others.
Still, the book is a model for how to write biography, and probably the best introduction to Victorian science and culture around today.
Exhaustive and exhausting.......2003-09-24
I've never read a book quite like Desmond's. He is an extremely talented writer and is obviously enthusiastic about Huxley, his "X club" cohorts, and Victorian England in general. Some of his prose is worth savoring, in fact. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, his talent and enthusiasm primarily result in a 650 page-long monograph of purple prose. It is difficult to find a single sentence on some pages that doesn't contain a simile (usually of an overwrought nature) or highly charged authorial proclamation. Although this practice certainly makes the writing lively, it also makes it extremely heavy-going and, at times, quite confusing. It is difficult to read more than a few pages at a time.
As for the book's material, it is never less than fascinating. Desmond is a thorough researcher, and he never fails to explore the major events in Huxley's life in proper detail. He is also enormously well-schooled in the world of Victorian science, university politics, and culture. Although he makes even the slightest struggle in Huxley's life seem like a battle for all time, he also succeeds in making "Hal" a truly sympathetic and utterly unparalleled individual. I had no problem with the straight narrative structure as other reviewers seem to have had, but many, many names popped in and out of the story with little information to refresh my memory and this grew tiresome.
In short, I recommend giving this book a shot. You may tolerate or even enjoy Desmond's prose. There is a lot of wonderful information about a wonderful and remarkable man to be imbibed. However, be warned that it will most likely be a murky, if hot and spicy, pool to wade through.
Theory, ideology and paradigm mechanization.......2003-06-11
This is one of the best bios of Huxley ever written (cf. also the more theoretical work of Shellie Lyons) and seems a natural companion to Moore & Desmond's work, Darwin: The Tormented Evolutionist.
The new style of Darwin studies takes the legacy of such as John Greene and others and zeroes in on the social context of the emergence of the theory as ideologically charged.
In Huxley's case one sees the generational change breaking the Anglican monopoly of the Paley-ites, but in the process creating a new establishment in the conservative revolution of Darwin's theory.
What is remarkable is that Darwin's bulldog had an initial clarity that drove him to defend Darwin on evolution, but demur on natural selection. How ironic. Le plus ca change!
It is hard to impossible to take theories of evolution in complete seriousness as pure science when we see the almost outrageous social darwinist cast to the whole operation. Huxley, to his credit, saw things differently toward the end in his final classic Evolution and Ethics. Would that the generations springing from his first great defense of the theory could come to his final regrets. Nice work.
amazing subject completely ruined.......2001-07-06
Thomas Huxley deserves better than this meandering, plodding tome. What should have been a facinating biography is lost in the obtuse style the author uses. On the plus side--there are some very good passages and pockets of wonderful information, and the bibliography is amazingly complete. On the minus side--the shining bits are so deeply hidden in the depths of the authors quagmire style you may need a machete to find them. I also agree with some earlier posts that a thematic approach would be preferrable to a strictly chronological narrative.

A thorough, user-friendly, practical book.......1999-05-04
I am a psychologist teaching part-time in a family practice residency. I have been using this book for several years to teach resident physicians ideas and skills to help their patients get better faster. The book does a good job of linking the fascinating world of mind-body medical research with practical ideas about how to change. In particular, the authors help everyone get off to a good start by normalizing the process of change and suggesting ways to avoid relapse. Another strength is the emphasis on a variety of methods to increase relaxation and picturing success, two time-tested skills. I recommend this book without reservation.
Product Description
"Roman's book is a timely tool to help people to enjoy alcoholic beverages of all kinds in a healthy and positive manner. . . .It is a constructive approach to teaching our young people how to enjoy the fruits of the ancient arts of brewing, winemaking, and distilling and how to avoid the abuse of these products. . . .I am conviced that it is more constructive to teach our offspring how to handle and enjoy the consumption of alcoholic beverages wisely, instead of demonizing these beverages." - Eric Wallace, president, Left Hand Brewing . . . . . This book teaches the keys to drinking responsibly. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is common in most cultures and societies. As evidenced by daily headlines covering the problems that can occur as a result of abusing this potent drug, those who choose to drink owe it to themselves and the rest of society to learn to do so responsibly. Author Roman T. Solohub hopes to educate young people in particular on safe, moderate alcohol comsumption. This important guide teaches: 1. The truth about the history of alcohol and how the influence of the abstinence theorists has been misleading; 2. Some of the pros and cons for setting 21 as the legal drinking age and misconceptions relating to underage drinking; 3. Why alcohol education is every bit as important as sex education; 4. Tips for moderate consumption, such as counting each and every drink consumed, and knowing when to say "when"; and, 5. About the health risks associated with chronic alcohol abuse. . . . . "Clear Thinking When Drinking" is for anyone who decides to drink alcohol. It is an ideal book for parents to give to their college-aged children or for businesses to give to their employees. This manual is also valuable as a reference for adults currently using alcohol who may have some misconceptions about its properties.

knowledge is power---this is the alpha and omega book on responsible alcohol consumption.......2006-10-16

It is comprehensive, well researched and it is of the utmost value for parent's ,educator's administrator's etc .The time is well overdue that a book has been written about what most like to ignore-- Ignorance is dangerous but knowledge aquired by this book is powerful, and requisite for all as irresponsible alcohol consumption can be very tragic.
Give this book to your kids before they start college!.......2006-10-15
This is by far the best reference to use to learn how to drink alcohol responsibly. Every young adult who is considering drinking alcohol MUST read this book!
It's about time someone has addressed the void in the available information on drinking alcohol in a responsible manner. This book will empower the reader with the knowledge necessary to make safe, practical decisions about alcohol.
I say it should be mandatory reading for all college freshman

a must read for the holidays.......2001-11-15
I think the layout and format, the cover and the information in it, is very good and straight forward. Very professional! Your message is one of solutions and I think, compared to a Dr. Phil's(oprah's show) book it is way better. I know he has
a huge following, but I think his book is a book of problems and he doesn't really give any straight forward answers on how to solve them.
My fitness levels are at an all time high and I thank you.
I have never lost weight so fast and been so strong in my life and I attribute 100% of it to this book.
I am very impressed!
HIGHLY MOTIVATING!.......2000-06-08
This has to be the best fitness book on the market today. It is loaded with great common sense ideas for the mind and body.It is great for people looking to get in shape but don't have the time to make fitness a religion.I am surprised a book like this isn't a bestseller.

This book is great. Once I started reading it I was not able to put it down. I enjoy workingout however I was not getting the results. This book showed me what I could do, i.e. eating and strength training, to get the results I wanted. Not only that but the bonus is I am sleeping better and feeling better. I am sending this book out to all my friends.

A good introduction.......2005-08-08
This book gives some background, and a good deal of introductory information, on the Chinese art of QiGong. It is well illustrated, and it's small, pocket size makes it ideal for when you're on the go. It is by no means a be-all, end-all book on QiGong, and I would not even recommend it as the first book you should pick up if you're new to QiGong, but it does serve as an adequate introduction.
There are a few things I dislike about this book. For starters, they spend a lot of time (and pages) on a long White Crane form, instead of introducing readers to simpler, more approachable exercies such as The Eight Pieces of Brocade. Also, having all of the models in this book dress alike makes them look like cult members (the chick with the crew cut doesn't help)!
If you're new to QiGong, I recommend "The Way Of QiGong" by Kenneth Cohen instead.
