Book Description
With the world at war, a law degree in hand and recently married, Talbot Rain knew his destiny. Along with his brother and his friends they joined the United States Marine Corps. He begins his journey with boot camp where he learns what being a Marine is really all about. He then heads to Officer Candidate School where he trains to become an officer. With his training finished, Talbot is sent to the Pacific to see what lies ahead for a first lieutenant as the battle rages on with Japan. Talbot explains first-hand how it felt to be a Marine landing on Iwo Jima. Strength, courage and humility are all told as Talbot fights alongside other Marines to an Allied victory at Iwo Jima. As tides turn, Talbot finds himself as a GeneralÂ's aide during the Occupation of Japan. And now, more than half a century later, Talbot finds the memories flow again of long ago battles, friendships and victories.

Excellent Book.......2006-03-15
An excellent book. Mr. Rain gives great insights into what it takes to work on the staff of a General Officer- In this case Marine Corps General Ray Robinson. Some great anecdotes about Robinson, a Marine who served throughout WW2 in quite a few of the major Marine Campaigns of that war.
MUST Read!.......2004-05-01
Great book! This book gives wonderful insight into what it was like going to war in the Pacific and fighting on Iwo Jima. The author gives a candid account of the events he went through preparing and fighting in WWII.
A look back at WWII in the Pacific.......2004-02-12
Enjoyed the book!! Great reading for the veteran. A must read for
students who want an insight as to what really happened in WWII and the bravery of our American soldiers. An honest account of one soldier's story of Iwo Jima.

Took me by surprise!.......2003-11-13
I was recently given a copy of this book for my birthday. At first glance I thought oh, great, another book I'll never look at, but then started leafing through it. It's packed with information on things my husband and I have been recently shopping around for, like a digital camcorder and a new lawnmower. There are loads of tips on how to make the most of your money and things to watch out for. But there's also stuff I never thought of: Hire a body guard, buy bonds, sell your body to science, buy a hourse trailer, sell a used bike?-and it's funny! My husband paws through it before he goes to Home Depot to get a good read on just about everything he needs. There'll be a lot of people getting this book for Christmas.

A wonderful primer written by an attorney on what you need to know about the process of either buying or selling a business........2007-03-03
I loved this book. The author does a wonderful job telling us what is involved in buying and selling a business. If you are thinking about buying a business to run yourself, or buying a business to add to an existing business, then this book will open your eyes to the process and demystify the process if you aren't knowledgeable about the subject already.
When covering how to evaluate the target business (the one you are considering to buy) the author discusses how to analyze the seller's operations and its financial statements. He also emphasizes that it is important to consider why the seller is selling.
When covering how to negotiate the sale the author discusses how much to pay, when to pay, stock purchases, asset purchases, and the purchase agreement terms. Since stock purchases were mentioned, I probably would have liked the book better if it had included a chapter on tax-free reorganizations. Adding such a chapter would have at least let readers know that such an animal exists. But maybe it would have been beyond the scope of the book?
The book is organized into 8 topics:
1. How to choose the business that is right for you
2. Evaluating the Target
3. Negotiating the Sale
4. How to buy a franchise
5. Choosing the form in which to conduct business
6. Financing the purchase
7. The closing
8. Some thoughts on selling a business
Appendices included: Sample Letter of Intent, Sample Purchase Agreement, and Sample Business Plan.
My favorite sections of the book for me were the third and fifth topics. The author did a wonderful job of explaining how to put a value on a target company. And he did a great job explaining Choice of Legal Entity issues. The annotated purchase agreement with exhibits in Appendix II was very helpful. And the sample business plan included in Appendix III for a building components manufacturing business was great. 5 stars!

Most weight-training programs are built around exercises that work as much muscle as possible, thus building the most strength in the least amount of time. But the Whartons believe the exact opposite approach is the most beneficial. They believe you should work your body one small group of muscles at a time. In that sense, The Whartons' Strength Book takes the exact same tack as their very popular Stretch Book.
Will the Strength Book become as much of a fitness-bookshelf staple? Maybe, but the two books appeal to different ends of the fitness spectrum. Whereas the Whartons' ideas about flexibility seem to be most useful and popular with high-performance athletes, their strength-training theories seem most suited to beginners and recreational athletes. Maybe they really do train this way themselves, and maybe they really use these methods on the professional athletes who pay for their services, but one has to doubt that many serious gym-goers will want to do specialized exercises for tiny muscles in their wrists and ankles, and will want to do a bunch of exercises for lower-body muscles that one move--the squat--can work all at once.
That said, most people who exercise will find something to like here. The beginning of the book is chock-full of useful tips for working out in your home without expensive equipment (for example, they note that a gallon jug of milk weighs 8.78 pounds; with two of those, you've got a decent set of dumbbells). Most people will be able to use at least a few of the 35 exercises illustrated. And anyone who enjoys sports--watching or playing--will be entertained by the Whartons' witty comments about training for specific activities. They note, for example, that hockey originated with bored shepherds strapping broken animal bones onto their feet. "Although the sport has evolved since those early days," they write, "one thing remains constant: broken bones." --Lou Schuler

Not what i expected.......2006-03-21
I purchased the book based on Dr Weil's endorsement. They may be good personal trainers but the book is impractical.
A Fun Read, But ..........2003-05-07
I bought this book hoping to expand on the strength training program I do at home. I'm a competitive track athlete and am dependent on strength exercises to prevent injury.
This book was a hoot to read. I read the whole thing, all of the exercises and all of the sports discussions at the back. The Whartons are fun and entertaining writers.
BUT. Truth be told, the only thing I changed about my exercise routine was that I now hold my leg extensions for 5 seconds instead of three. That's it.
The Whartons would have you believe that it takes only twenty minutes or so to do their list of exercises for each sport, but I didn't find this to be true. Exercising one little muscle at a time is time consuming and pain staking. I find myself doing the same old squats and push-ups that I've always done -- exercises that, frankly, give you the many muscle group workout that the Whartons discourage.
i recommend this book to many clients.......1999-09-17
the whartons are very experienced and knowledgeable, and i found their descriptions of the exercises totally clear and understandable. This book gave me the ability to feel completely confident that i could work out at home, where i wanted to be. The lifts are for the whole body, with the emphasis on balance rather that just looking good. for the person who wants to work out at home, i haven't seen anything better. I found the sports discussions pretty vague and they definitely should delete the horsebackriding section!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.......1999-07-12
That's what I said after I realized I PAID MONEY for this book. The problem with this book is that it doesn't communicate: they literally spend 1 page talking about professional equipment, and 3 pages talking about how much kitchen supplies weigh, leaving the reader COMPLETELY confused as what to do. I never could figure out if I was supposed to use my normal weights or start pumping Crisco (tm). Um, yeah . . . I think I'll put down my 40-pounders for an 8 pound milk jug . . .
Someone new to fitness and lifting will be completely confused by this book and WILL (not might, will) hurt themselves. Someone who is new to fitness and lifting and is already out of shape will be in WORSE shape if they follow the Wharton's nutrition advice. These guys DO NOT communicate and DO NOTHING for someone who isn't already qualified to be a strength instructor.
Maybe this is a great book for the professional athlete. But for a newbie, and especially a fat newbie, this book will do nothing but confuse you and waste your time. If you followed the "lifts" in this book for a year, you'd be limber and would have toned muscles, but they'd be so tiny you'd be hard pressed to do anything other than go grocery shopping. This is one of the worst books I've ever seen.
the best book for the work-out-at-home person.......1999-02-18
This book is not for anyone planning on being the next Mr/Ms Olympia. It is for the person who wants to work out at home, without a lot of fuss, space, money, or complicated routines. The exercises are very simple and easy to follow. I have seen these same moves and techniques at gym classes, such as aerobic circuit training. They will not make you an instant athlete, but the exercises will help tone you up on a very low budget. The exercises also include ways to modify them if you have an injury (such as a back injury) that limits your mobility. For people who want to stay in shape and didn't think they had the time, money or ability, this book is the best.
Book Description
According to Georgian legend, God took a supper break while creating the world. He became so involved with his meal that he inadvertently tripped over the high peaks of the Caucasus, spilling his food onto the land below. The land blessed by Heaven's table scraps was Georgia.
Nestled in the Caucasus mountain range between the Black and Caspian seas, the Republic of Georgia is as beautiful as it is bountiful. The unique geography of the land, which includes both alpine and subtropical zones, has created an enviable culinary tradition. In The Georgian Feast, Darra Goldstein explores the rich and robust culture of Georgia and offers a variety of tempting recipes.
The book opens with a fifty-page description of the culture and food of Georgia. Next are over one hundred recipes, often accompanied by notes on the history of the dish. Holiday menus, a glossary of Georgian culinary terms, and an annotated bibliography round out the volume.

An authoritative English-language resource on Georgian cuisine.......2007-07-05
This is a marvelous, utterly authentic encyclopedia of Georgian cooking. I tried some of the recipes before leaving for Georgia in summer 2006, and they were great, and gave me a good idea of what to expect. Once in Georgia, the book was an invaluable reference that I constantly turned to whenever I tried something new. Just about *everything* I had is in here, along with many things I didn't get around to sampling.
This book also helped me learn the correct Georgian names for the dishes and many of the ingredients. A significant portion of the book is devoted to providing cultural background on Georgia and Georgian food, such the elaborate rules for a _tamada_, or Georgian toastmaster. With its charming photos of representative paintings scattered generously throughout its pages, it also made me a Pirosmani fan, and better able to appreciate the originals when I saw them for myself.
Most importantly, as the other reviewers say, the recipes *work*. We just made the potato salad with walnut paste (p. 172), and it was delectable. Other dishes we have tried and like include tomato soup with walnuts and vermicelli (p. 73) and green beans with egg (p. 130). Pkhali was one of my favorite dishes in Georgia, and I'm glad to have the recipe for when I get around to making it myself. There is a recipe for beets with cherry sauce, a dish a travel companion had tried but that even some of our Georgian hosts weren't familiar with. For the few recipes that seem to be missing from this book, like eggplant with walnut paste, try Please to the Table: The Russian Cookbook, another excellent collection of delicious recipes from all the former Soviet republics.
_The Georgian Feast_ is well worth having even if you don't eat meat - many of the recipes are completely vegetarian. This book is a real treasure.
Khmeli suneli.......2007-01-16
I've already written a review of this great book. I have only one suggestion: the basic khmeli suneli recipe can be augmented further to reach the authentic smell and taste. The wikipedia article on khmeli suneli has additional ingredients that can be added to the recipe. I tried that, about 2 teaspoons of each ingredient that's not already in Darra's recipe (less for black and chili pepper), and it came closer to the authentic smell and taste. I think the author of the wikipedia article might have meant safflower (marigold) instead of saffron though, so I didn't add that.
One of my favorites!.......2006-03-18
As someone who was born and grew up in Tbilisi, I was very happy to find this book -- it captures all of my favorite recipes, and when I prepare them according to this book, they taste just like my grandma's cooking.
More than just a recipe book, this is also an exploration into the rich history and culture of Georgia, and how the history shaped the cuisine. I suggest this book to everyone who would like to add some interesting preparations to their cooking. For vegetarians, Georgians have plenty of healthful and filling ways to prepare veggies and beans, and also some mouth watering sauces that will enliven any dish (veg or not).
I enjoy this book both as a cook book, and as a historical book!
Great book.......2006-02-25
I gave this book to a Georgian and she loved it. It had all the dishes she had eatten as a child. If your looking for a book to fill in any missing recipes this is the book for you.
Truly a Feast!.......2005-12-08
I chanced upon this, started reading, and found I kept picking it up again and again to read more about the customs and culture of Georgia!
This is a well written book...
-an enjoyable Georgian cultural read, by a down to earth scholar
-a very good collection of accurate recipes, per other reviewers
-the recipes are simple in ingredients for the most part (some substitutions may be helpful depending on season and your location)
-the recipe instructions are clear and concise.
I recommend this purchase, and I will check out other titles by this author.
