Product Description
When, yielding to the solicitations of my friends, I finally decided to write these Memoirs, the greatest difficulty which confronted me was that of recounting my share in the many notable events of the last three decades, in which I played a part, without entering too fully into the history of these years, and at the same time without giving to my own acts an unmerited prominence.
Customer Reviews:
The life of a great Union general, in his own words.......2003-11-15
The two-volume memoirs of General Philip Sheridan have been condensed in this edition to one paperback volume, thus making more accessible. Let me state up front that I'm giving this product four stars because of the edition. There is an introduction by Jeffry Wert, and that appears to be the extent of the work done in preparation for this volume's release. There are numerous spelling and mechanical errors (I'm not sure if these were Sheridan's or just the result of careless editing), and they are frequent enough to get really annoying really fast. ''m not talking about pre-standardized type spelling errors, or awkward, run-on nineteenth century sentences. No, these are just careless mistakes.
That having been said, this is a great volume of memoirs from one of the Civil War's most accomplished generals. I do not say great general, because whether or not he was great is still a topic of much controversy. There is no denying that Sheridan got things done, and that he won several important victories, but there is room for debate in the matter in which he accomplished things, and his treatment of subordinates in doing so.
Predictably, Sheridan paints a pretty rosy picture of himself in his memoirs. Still, to be fair to the man, he DID do an awful lot for the Union cause, and I don't think that his vainglory can be entirely chalked up to shameless self promotion. The fact is that he was a very key factor in several victories, and to take his part away from the narrative would be to distort the entire picture of what happened. "Little Phil" was almost always present and often in the fray during his decisive engagements. On the other hand, I noticed him dressing-down his role in some conflicts, whereas contemporary accounts praise his part to no end.
The great thing about memoirs is that we hear things straight from the mouths of those who took part in them, and are able to judge for ourselves to what extent their testimony is reliable. For me, at least, I will always feel that Sheridan's memoirs hold a certain bias, but I will nevertheless continue to hold this volume of personal narrative as valuable. (Note: this volume covers only to the point of Sheridan returning from Europe. There's nothing on the little Bighorn or later military activities here).
If You Can't Afford the Original 1888 2 Volume Set..........2000-05-07
These are his own words set in one paperback novel. Gives you a perspective on the war from a leadership position. However, it doesn't have the maps and pictures that the original volumes sported.
Great personal recollections of a man who lead the troops fearlessly in the war.

Book Description
While on his meteoric rise in the Union army, Philip H. Sheridan earned the enmity of many Virginians for laying waste to the Shenandoah Valley. His date and place of birth is uncertain, but he himself claimed to have been born in New York in 1831. Although he was destined to come out of the Civil War with the third greatest reputation among the victors, his military career did not begin auspiciously. It took him five years to graduate from West Point (1853) because of an altercation with fellow cadet and future Union General, William R. Terrill.
After serving in a staff position during the early part of the war he was recommended for the command of a cavalry regiment by Gordon Granger. Within days of taking command he was in charge of the brigade with which he earned his first star at Booneville in northern Mississippi. He fought well at Perryville and Murfreesboro and was given a second star in the volunteers.
When Grant went to the East, he placed Sheridan in command of the Army of the Potomac's mounted arm. Following Early's threat to Washington, Grant tapped Sheridan to command a new military division, comprised of three departments, and charged him with clearing out the Shenandoah Valley. For this campaign he was named brigadier and major general in the regular army and received the Thanks of Congress.
The next March he destroyed Early's remaining forces at Waynesboro and then went on a raid, threatening Lynchburg. Rejoining Grant, he smashed through the Confederate lines at Five Forks, necessitating the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. It was his cavalry command, backed by infantry, which finally blocked Lee's escape at Appomattox.
This is a digital reprint of the two Volume C.L. Webster Shoulder Board editions As Published in 1888. This is Volume 1 (ISBN 1582181853) of 2 (ISBN 1582181861).

AT LAST -- the TRUTH.......2002-03-25
This is a wonderful piece of work that finally acknowledges that it was the courage and skill of the UNION (when finally allowed to fight) that won the Civil War and that the whining of the Good ol Boys about being "outnumbered" ect is BUNK!

The Dragon Slayer with a Heavy Heart.......2007-08-06
This book made a tremendous impact on my life. For anyone that worries about things they are unsure of, you don't realize how much it is weighing you down. After I read this book, I realized that I can't change other people, only myself, and worrying about things that are out of my control was only hurting me. I have read this book twice in two weeks. It's absolutely the best book I have ever read.
Fr. Gannon's Book Club.......2007-06-28
We ordered this book online based on the reviews. I am part of a 20 person book club. We all enjoyed the book. We were not sure what to make of it at first, but after reading on, you get the message. The author found a humorous and colorful way of dealing with some tough life issues. Would recommend this book to anyone to read - just hard to explain the book and the title when someone asks what you're reading!
Great read and would make a great animated story.
Help doesn't have to be 600 pages long!.......2005-07-28
This book was a great story. Sometimes less is more. The book was entertaining in its brevity but packed a heavy punch. There are too many of us that carry heavy hearts. This was a real inspiration to me. Some of the lessons seem so simple but sometimes it's those things that confuse us the most. I think that if we can all apply the valuable lessons of this book, we'd all be better. I highly recommend this publication.
The Dragon Slayer Lightened My Heart.......2004-10-28
I read the Dragon Slayer With A Heavy Heart and felt better.
Previously I didn't even know that my problem was a heavy heart,
once I identified with the characters in the book it was obvious.
Then I got the tools to start the process of healing my heart
which was not in good shape after losing my soul-mate wife of
20 years.
It showed me pain is inevitable but doesn't need to last forever.
Thanks
Reese Jones
A Great Book for All Ages.......2004-10-06
As a psychotherapist I have found this to be a wonderful resource for clients. It is the best all-around book for the majority of my clients to aid them in feeling better and correcting irrational thoughts. It's fun, interesting, and makes some great points. Even my 13 year-old son read it and daily uses it's ideas to improve his view of the world and himself. A MUST for everyone interested in improving the quality of their life.

Best Spiritual Book.......2003-08-16
This is the best spiritual book I have ever read because it is about 'doing' rather than theorizing. God is a verb, not a noun. It takes the traditional 12 Steps and makes it applicable for everyone, even if you're not fortunate enough to be an alcoholic. That sounds odd, but if you speak to many recovering alcoholics, they thank their disease and their use of the 12 Steps for their awakening to a Spirit-infused universe.
Best of Both Worlds.......2000-03-22
Spirit vs Spirit! This is the definitive essay on living a free life! Don't whine--Just work the steps.

Mrs. Schloss navigates through the hectic lifestyle of modern America using 2 simple and time-tested tools: Torah and the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The character weakness of co-dependency is examined. The author shows that Torah and Twelve Steps are not only compatible, but useful together. She then uses these tools to give instruction to the modern Jew on what can seem an overwhelming task: starting over and moving forward, one day at a time, in harmony with Jewish values.

Product Description
Happiness is attainable. As a therapist, Dr. Sharon Engeler works with individuals who are in crisis and distress. Many of these individuals are indirectly playing a role in their own happiness. Often there is a long history of problems that contributes to the individuals belief that they have no control over circumstances or their own state of mind. Nine Steps To Happiness is a therapeutic tool to encourage the individual to look within themselves for answers. Even if you're not in crisis or distress, you'll gain a lot of insight from this incredible book. Dr. Engeler believes it is necessary to examine our own actions on a daily basis and correct those things that we may be doing that contribute to our own negative attitudes. We should observe and learn from our own actions and reactions and always remember that all harm to others is automatic.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Book!.......2007-10-10
One of the treasures that any library MUST have, I bought the book last summer and read it at different occasions, each time I read the book, I start to have different senses and feelings about the stories of the book.
No matter how you start reading this book, one would learn valuable insights. I started reading the book from the beginning and jumped to the end and moved to the middle of the book and found myself getting more hooked up withing the story lines.
The characters of this book are fabulous and out-spoken, even though the author of the book is trying to introduce the lessons and experiences via some imaginary people, one may realize that those characters are responding back to him/her.
Although I am from Saudi Arabia where I was raised in a unique culture, values and backgrounds, I found my self very compatible with the values and ethics that this books introduces.
I recall one occasion when I had a long waiting hours at an air port, I could not get my eyes out of the book and was about to miss my flight:).
With this book, I assure you that your life and expectations of it will be more meaningful and purposeful.

The Flow of Life!.......2002-01-31
I started reading this book when I was flying to Europe and the first part "Ashes" had really profound impact on me and I was not able to control my tears.
"The Brook represents the Universal Flow of actions. The flow of thoughts constitutes the mind and the flow of actions constitutes the life."
There are so many lessons that can be earned from this book. It makes you think and understand what the purpose of life is. It sets you free to find out who you really are, what you really want, where your passions are, and how you can get there. This is a kind of book that I will turn to again and again whenever I need some inspiration.
Regardless of where you are in your life, I suggest that you read this book, with a pen in hand to write down what you are feeling and thinking.
Thank you Dr. Prem Chopra for this wonderful book!

GREAT Descriptions, Pictures, Gardening Advice..........2004-03-20
Well worth having as a reference book. There are numerous tasteful ways to prepare the flowers As well as ways to grow them. The Pictures are very good for descriptions of Plants and What the prepared foods will look like (providing you have the right skills) In the back is a list of some of the plants to look out for that are not to be eaten and she has her list of "rules" when looking into eating the flowers. 250 pages of great Information!

"Edible Flowers from Garden to Palate" is a feel good book written for people who are already experts on the subject. How else can you explain that less than 1/3 of one page of this 250 page book is dedicated to "What part of the Flower to Eat" and much of that paltry 16 lines of text is either confusing or inconsistent with other key portions of the book? Although there are specific warnings about flower parts including stamens, styles, pistils and sepals -- there are not any pictures or diagrams illustrating what they look like on the various flower types or how best to remove them. Infact, they are not even listed in the index! Even within these three short paragraphs Ms. Barash apparently contradicts herself. At the bottom of paragraph 1 she states "Remove the sepals of all flowers except violas, Johnny Jump-ups and pansies." Then at the bottom of paragraph 2 she states, "Others, including Johnny jump-ups, violets, runner bean, honeysuckle and clover can be eaten in their entirety." Does "eaten in their entirety" include the sepal or the stamens, the styles and the pistils? For that matter, why is the term pistil used in The Ten Rules of Edible Flowers and not refered to in the section on what parts of the flower are edible? Furthermore, Ms. Barash appears to consistently violate her own "rules". For example, prior to the Introduction she lists The Ten Rules of Edible Flowers which includes number 7, "Remove pistils and stamens from flowers before eating. Eat only the petals." Then on page 231 she states, "If they are on the plate, they should be edible." Both seem like good consistent advise until you read the sections on the individual plants. Page 17 shows a whole Calendula on a plate. Is all of it edible? Page 28 shows a whole Daylily on a plate. Is all of it edible? Page 43 shows a whole nasturtian on a plate. Page 59 shows a whole stem of sage including leaves and flowers on a plate. Page 75 shows a whole stem of anise hyssop including leaves and flowers on a pizza. This raises the question, which flowers do you really have to follow the rules and only eat the petals? A rule is not a rule if almost everything is an exception. This seeming lack of consistency is continued throughout the book. On page 173 both the recipe and the photo call for a whole pineapple guava flower. Is all of the flower edible? Even the dreaded stamens, styles, pistils, and sepals? Which rule if any is being violated by these examples, rule 7 or the prohibiltion on page 231?
Unfortunately, readers who don't already know the answers to these questions will have to find the answers from another source. From my perspective, this book is yet another example of a very disturbing trend in books and magazines related to organic gardeing. It seems at an ever increasing rate that "essential facts" are being replaced by glossy paper and beautiful photos. Why authors and publishers seem to think the two are mutually exclusive is beyond me.
Best book of edible flower recipies.......1999-11-11
This is the best book of edible flower recipes I have found. It is packed with delicious recipes using over 60 different flowers. Conveniently, about half are accompanied by small color photos of the dish.
The book starts out with essential information on cooking with flowers including preserving & drying them. General recipes such as flower butter, honey, sugar, syrup & jelly for each flower follow.
There are also facts on each flower including the scientific name, a brief history, physical characteristics, description of flavor & ideal growing conditions. Great basic information on organic gardening in included as well.
Most of the recipes I've tried, including soups, salads, desserts, drinks & main dishes have been easy to make. My favorite is the herb & flower cheese terrine. It makes a tasty & impressive party appetizer.
