Customer Reviews:
A Good Start to Looking Offshore.......2007-03-21
This book covers most of your questions and describes the basics for banking and corporations established outside the US. It tries to give you the pros and cons of each type of company and a list of places to look into. While it may not be the only book you'll ever need, it does a nice job of detailing what you'll need and how to go about the process of offshore management of finances and protecting your assets. It would have gotten 5 stars if it had been more recent. Still, its' quite worthwhile compared to what else is out there.
An O.K. book.......2007-01-21
This book lets you understand the fundamentals of offshore investing to protect yourself from lawsuits and avoid unnecessary tax liability. It focuses on the legal way to avoid exposure. This book is worth the money, but nothing outstanding.
Dangerous Advice that could get you in trouble..........2005-03-23
Famous authors of several other books like this one, for example Jerome Schneider, have already been * convicted * of tax fraud and have handed over their entire client lists to the US Government.
There is no legal way of avoiding US Taxes through offshore banks, offshore trusts, or numbered accounts. These things are only good for:
1.) Asset protection
2.) Diversifying investments/access to greater variety of investments
and that's it. Be wary of advice in books like this one if you are using them to avoid taxes.
If you don't like paying high taxes, give up your residency, hand in your passport and get citizenship in a country with lower taxes.
Don't read at your peril.......2004-12-24
If you are looking for a "feel good" book that only gives you the sugar frosting about offshore without warning you about the many pitfalls, then this book isn't for you.
On the one hand, if your interest is learning about the realities of offshore banking and tax reporting for U.S. citizens, etc., the you will find this a good starter guide. It's also chock full of interesting stories based on Mr. Cornez's personal experiences in the offshore havens.
Pretty good book for newbies.......2004-11-25
This is a good book for teaching newbies the basics of how to go offshore, open bank accounts, and (perhaps most importantly) avoid offshore scams.
The book needs to be read in light of recent revisions to the Patriot Act and new currency transfer reporting requirements. Don't even think of going offshore if your goal is to try to hide money from Uncle Sam, since if your particular plan fails it will probably end up being felony tax evasion.

Customer Reviews:
technical but good.......2001-02-08
Ideal for all practioners and advanced students. It certainly helps one to become familiar with the tax planning environment. There is one weekness though: it does not address the new ways of doing business trough new technologies (e-commerce, e-business)and the related problems for international taxation that emerge from there. In spite of that, one must say that its very good book that enrichs the debate.

Customer Reviews:
The author was convicted for giving out this advice..........2005-02-03
Don't waste your money.
The author is a sham artist. He was convicted, and in a plea bargain handed over his entire client list to the US Governtment. None of the advice in this book is legal or legitimate.
Author Is Going to Prison.......2004-11-30
Anyone who believes this BS is either really stupid or really naive. The author has been charged with defrauding the federal government, has agreed to a plea bargain, and will enter the U.S. District Court in San Francisco next month to plead guilty. As part of the plea bargain Mr. Schneider has turned over his client list to the IRS, complete with addresses, phone numbers and other information. Some tax advice: When something sounds too good to be true - it always is.
Gary W. Carter, author of "JK Lasser's Taxes Made Easy for Your Home-Based Business"
Tried it, book doesn't work........2004-05-04
I followed the book's instructions to the letter and tried to open a current account at three Singapore banks recommended in the book. Only one replied, saying I could only open an account denominated in US dollars or Singapore dollars, and not any other currency, contrary to what the book says. In addition, this bank wanted somebody already known to them to introduce me to them before they'd deal with me. This book is a waste of time and money. I'm now doing internet research to get the informmation I need to do what I want to do. It takes a lot more time, but I feel confident of success.
we have a winner for "Worst Investing Book"!.......2004-05-04
this book is the equivalent of the saturday morning "get rich quick" scheisters you see on TV (and incidentally, the author, naturally, pitches his wares at the end).
the advice in the book goes beyond being bad...its irresponsible, misleading, and negligent.
here's one of the author's brainfarts (paraphrased):
"open an off shore reinsurance company, and then with your domestic company, purchase insurance from your off shore company--that way the premiums are both tax-deductible and a source of profit at the same time!" ---and how exactly would this help you in event of a claim?
or better still (and i quote):
" (US) banks are in bad shape--worse shape, in fact (though none are provided---a common refrain in this book, claims w/o data!), than most foreign banks. Of course, your money is insured up to $100k by the FDIC, but what would happen in the event of a universal banking crisis? Federal agencies could never handle the massive run on banks that would ensue..." ---oh, so this is to imply that a small private off-shore bank is going to serve as the new financial risk-free rate determinant (setting all financial markets back 100+ yrs), and this small off-shore bank is going to be far safer than the US Govt (FDIC)?
this book is an insult to anyone w/ a critical mind. its beyond terrible. its a great way to lose money, whether you invest as he advocates, or simply throwing away your $30 to buy it.
A collection of bedtime stories.......2003-12-31
This book is poorly structured. The author reiterates the same concept of going offshore over and over again. He does not reveal any detail on how to do it. Instead, he gives you a great number of short stories that he had heard from someone else. This was one of the worst books I had ever read! Stay away!

Customer Reviews:
No post 9-11 stuff, but still cool.......2005-03-19
just bought my second copy as a gift to a client
although there is no anti-money laundering (after 9-11) material, as the text appears to have been written right before that, it is still an international standard in comparing tax haven locations
has an extensive section for Canadian investors, which is why i like it
reading is kind of on the dull side but it isn't meant to be a mystery novel but instead offers useful information using straight talk
cool for the novice.......2003-12-27
it was worth the money for this book because I now know not to believe the hype when searching for a proper offshore location country - helps you figure out what makes a place a suitable offshore site
a useful text.......2003-09-22
This is a great book - I would give a hint to potential buyers that I have seen this rather pricey good paperback seller over at Amazon.co.uk cheaper than at Amazon.com (via Amazon Marketplace), and it appears to be internationally available. Good hunting (for the book)...and then good hunting for a tax haven!
not exciting but surely useful.......2002-04-14
I was slightly intimidated because the previous reviewer (anonymous) gave it such a scathing review (stating it was boring and useless) - but I ordered it from Amazon nevertheless since it is so highly rated and a (according to a friend) best seller on the subject. OK, so it isn't the most exciting read on the planet, but useless? Hardly! I found that when I applied the information with the other standard books on offshore that it was extremely useful as a selection tool. There is a lot of information contained in the 300 pages. I suggest that if readers seek excitement that they go see a film. If someone wants a book about choosing an offshore tax haven (even if boring), this is worth the price.
Redefines the meaning of "boring".......2002-03-27
I was the struggling not to fall asleep the whole time. Terrible, dry language. Not a single practical piece of advice. I was bored to tears.

Book Description
New from the editors of Practical Latin American Tax Strategies
Tax planners need to be keenly aware of the impact of tax treaties as they consider structuring a firm's business in Latin America. For example, advisers are increasingly recommending the use of Europe for investments into Latin America, not only from a holding company perspective, but also from a financing and royalty stream perspective. Within Europe, the one jurisdiction that probably is the most attractive for treaty planning is Spain. Other jurisdictions include Netherlands, Luxembourg and possibly Denmark.
To help firms navigate treaty planning, WorldTrade Executive has just published a new special report Using Treaties and Holding Companies for Latin American Tax Planning.
The report details planning opportunities for: - Argentina - Brazil - The Caribbean - Chile - Colombia - Mexico - Venezuela
There are also detailed reports on the use of holding companies based in Europe and elsewhere and special situations such as technical assistance, royalty and service payments.

Starts strong, goes out with a whimper.......2006-07-05
I'd overall give this a 3.5 stars...
And this short review is more for the whole 5-manga series and not just for the first volume, but if you are thinking of geting the first one, you might want to know what you are in for.
I agree with what several of the others have said in Planetes' favor. The characters are interesting, the "realistic sci-fi" aspect is quite good, and the overall direction or plot pull the reader in.
This lasts through the first two or three books. The last two seemed to me at least to lose the pulse of the earlier volumes. Maybe it is the case that all manga/anime must devolve into "emo," but that doesn't mean I have to like it. I appreciated the psychological aspects to the storytelling, and their importance to the tale's overall theme...but, well, Planetes emphasized this to excess. What began as a complicated human story ended up as a facile lesson. I wouldn't want to ruin it for anyone, so I won't disclose any more of the conclusion (if it could be called that).
Great first book, great 2nd, and maybe 3rd...weaker 4th and a disappointing 5th (or 4.part 2...as it is called)
Absolutely outstanding "realistic" manga sci-fi.......2006-05-15
Planetes almost defies description, but it's nominally about a space debris clean-up crew in the near future who work ceaselessly at clearing away all the now-useless junk we've launched into orbit. It has all the stillness and mystery of 2001: A Space Odyssey, without the detachment and tension. The characters deal with real-life issues of loss, inadequacy and loneliness against the vast backdrop of limitless space, and without bringing out a stick to beat the moral into us, Planetes proves that companionship and purpose make us whole and give meaning to life. Can you tell I love this series? I want to run out and buy all the books. Then I found out there is an anime series, too - released on DVD here in America, with subtitles! I'm giddy with anticipation.
PICK UP YOUR TRASH MAN!.......2005-06-18
The year is 2074AD and the human race is primed to explore the solar system. There are bases on the moon and preparations are underway to send an expedition to Jupiter. 23 year-old Hachimaki has always talked about owning his own ship and becoming a famous astronaut. But somehow, over the years that dream has given way to reality. Hachimaki is an astronaut, from a certain point of view. He has gotten a job as a debris collector, a job which entails removing space garbage caused by all the satellites and assorted junk that mankind has left in orbit around the Earth. Space debris probably doesn't sound that dangerous, but just ask his colleague, Yuri, who lost his wife because of a piece of space junk, how serious it can be. The other crewmember of their operation is the pilot, Fee, a single mom who lets the guys do all the dangerous work.
The first volume of Planetes is really a character study. There's Yuri, who must deal with the haunting presence of his dead wife. Yachimaki must ponder whether what he is doing is conducive to his goals in life, especially when he returns home to a little brother who sees him as a loser. And then there's Fee, who is just looking for a place to smoke a cigarette, even if the radical environmental group "Space Defense Fighters" is targeting smoking areas on the lunar base.
Planetes is a manga that features more realism than most which is reflected in the story and the art. It's good science fiction with a does of humor and a cast that is instantly likeable. Highly reccomended.
2074 - Mankind is spreading out into space..........2005-03-28
There are space stations, cities on the moon and a huge demand for more resources. And whereever man goes he takes his trash with him. Disused satellites, fuel tanks and other space junk makes it dangerous just moving about in orbit. The young Hachimaki works as a orbital garbage man but he has bigger plans in mind. He wants his own spaceship.
The manga is realistic, using real science, but never shoving it into our face - the characters and their stories are always the most important point. Great hard science fiction set in a near future that seems just around the corner.
The first real HARD sci-fi manga I've found.......2004-05-21
This book is amazing for a number of reasons. First, it is unique among space manga in being rather realistic: The physics works, for the most part, and the technology and social arrangements seem to stem logically from the current situation.
But on the other hand, this book avoids the pitfall that so much hard sci-fi falls prey to: It doesn't spend all its time describing the technology and such to the detrement of characters and plot. In fact, the realism of the science and the technology is matched and even maybe exceeded by the realism of the characters. Yukimura's amazing ability to balance scientific realism with humanistic realism brings to mind Heinlein or Clarke, and definitely earns the name "graphic novel" in a way that manga does not always achieve.

Book Description
"When you start training your dog (or dating a man), it is a good idea to have three bottom-line rules that you enforce no matter what . . ."
DOGS
No sleeping on the bed.
No jumping up on people.
No eating people's food.
MEN
Be consistent.
Have a sense of humor.
Be financially self-sufficient.
Hilarious, insightful, witty, and wise, Clare Staples is saying what most women have been thinking. And in Everything I Know About Men I Learned From My Dog, the former model and party girl turned relationship expert proves that what works for the four-legged companion in a woman's life can work equally well for the two-legged variety. Divided into immediately evident categories, such as "Selecting a Breed" and "How to Stay the Boss," and packed with good-humored observations and practical advice, Everything I Know About Men I Learned From My Dog is the perfect field guide to any girl's two most complicated companions -- her dog and her man.
From choosing the right personality to figuring out your companion's quirks and idiosyncrasies, dog ownership and human relationships can be complex affairs. What do you do when he bares his teeth or is a little clingy? How do you reward him when he is good and scold him when he is naughty? With Clare Staples's simple, clever tips, your relationships with both species will be happier and more successful.
DON'T GO FOR LOOKS
MAN: Handsome men are never a great bet. Often they have learned to rely on their looks and have not had to develop a personality or sense of humor -- far more important qualities.
DOG: Don't choose a dog for looks alone. Looks are only skin-deep -- loyalty, devotion, and eagerness to please and unconditional love are the most wonderful things.
DON'T CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE
MAN: When you first meet your man, don't change anything for him. Don't give up your friends or hobbies. Never cancel anything to be with him.
DOG: When you first get a dog, chances are he will whine when you leave him alone, but he'll get used to it and appreciate you more when you spend quality time with him.
GIVE POSITIVE REWARDS
MAN: When your man does something that you like -- such as brings you a present -- reward him. Give him a treat, spoil him.
DOG: All dogs love praise. Train a dog with positive rewards for positive behavior.
Customer Reviews:
A hilarious, fun, and enthusiastically recommended read.......2006-09-02
Everything I Know About Men I Learned From My Dog by former British model Clare Staple was actually released in the UK a year ago to much acclaim, so it's been a long wait for American readers to enjoy its appearance here. Any with an interest in pets, romance, and the modern dating scene will find Everything I Know About Men I Learned From My Dog a hilarious set of links on how to train and manage either species. From 'off days' and 'superiority' to grooming for self-worth and being elusive rather than too easy, this is a hilarious, fun, and enthusiastically recommended read.
Silly with a capital S..........2006-05-10
Silly book, done better years ago as "If a Man Answers" (also made into a movie). That time it was done very tongue in cheek, this time it's just dumb and offensive.
The Truth About Dogs.......2006-04-26
As a human behavior and relationship expert, it is important to say that comparing dogs with men or humans is an insult to the intelligence of women, period.
Clare Staples, says men and canines are synonymous: "men and dogs have the same urges and natural instincts." Staples sets out to offer "secrets and information on how to make relationships work", claiming that men can be trained like dogs. Staples misses the mark. She suggests strategies such as ignoring your man. If you ignore your man, how will you expect him not to ignore you? Staples also says to teach your man to give so he can get back. I believe that this creates the opposite result and only encourages men to be selfish and conditional.
There are no similarities between a woman's relationship with a dog and a woman's relationship with a man:
Do you and your dog get intimate?
Do you discuss your problems with your dog?
Does your dog provide for you or do you provide for your dog?
Does your dog help raise your children?
Does your dog look after you or offer you emotional or financial security?
Does your dog stimulate you intellectually?
Do you and your dog share your innermost fears and fantasies?
When you are sick, will your dog physically care for you?
There are 5 key elements to a relationship:
Friendship
Companionship
Sex
Love
Intimacy
How can you have those 5 with a dog? How would a dog help you to express your individuality and identity? What about mutual concern, joint growth, open communication, and supporting each other? How would a dog help you to grow emotionally or become self-actualized? Should we also treat our sons as dogs?
Dogs do not have the power of choice; humans do. Choosing to believe that men are like dogs only serves to insult women's intelligence and leave them unfulfilled, unsatisfied and single. Women would be better served to find equality in relationships rather than trying to master their mate, like a dog.
