Book Description
From the moment he was shot down to the final whistle, Jimmy James' one aim as a POW of the Germans was to escape.
The Great Escaper describes his experiences and those of his fellow prisoners in the most gripping and thrilling manner. The author made more than 12 escape attempts including his participation in The Great Escape, where 50 of the 76 escapees were executed in cold blood on Hitler's orders.
On re-capture, James was sent to the infamous Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp where, undeterred, he tunneled out. That was not the end of his remarkable story.
Moonless Night has strong claim to be the finest escape story of the Second World War.

Details on Escape Experiences from Stalag Luft III and Sachsenhausen.......2007-08-28
The author, Jimmy James, provides many lucid details dealing with his experiences before, during, and after the Great Escape. James discusses his experiences at Barth, Stalag Luft III, Szubin, and Sachsenhausen. (He later visited the site of Stalag Luft III in 2004, 60 years after the Great Escape. At that time, he also observed the forensic dig that amazingly unearthed remnants of the tunnel Dick). James provides tables at the end of the book which include various statistics on the three tunnels dug at the time of the Great Escape (tons of sand removed per tunnel and per interval of time, numbers of pieces of lumber used for shoring per tunnel, etc.).
James provides a summary of events that occurred on the night of the Great Escape itself. After he left tunnel Harry during the night of the Great Escape, James trekked to Tschiebsdorf (now Trzebow), took a train to Boberrohrsdorf (or Bober-Rohrsdorf; now Siedlecin), and then was caught just north of the German-Czech border. Most of his comrades were murdered by the Germans, in open violation of the Geneva Convention.
James' description of what went on in Sachsenhausen concentration camp is graphic. Unlike modern treatments that tend to emphasize the experiences of Jews, James provides a balanced account of the many different victims of the Germans and the unspeakable cruelties that they were forced to endure. James makes it clear that Poles and other Slavs, religious and political dissidents, etc., were treated every bit as bad as the Jews. Inmates of western European nationalities, by contrast, were treated considerably better. James mentions numerous details seldom encountered in English-language publications. These include the dressing up of some of the corpses of Sachsenhausen inmates in Polish army uniforms for a faked Polish provocatory "attack" on German territory (along the German-Polish border) used to justify the ensuing German conquest of Poland in September 1939, the murder of 17,000 Polish POWs at Sachsenhausen in March 1940, and the suicide of inmate Jakob Djugashvili (son of Joseph Stalin) following news of the Katyn massacre of Polish POWs (correctly blamed on the Soviets).

Best WW2 Escape Book I've Read.......2004-07-06
The review title just about says it all. Not only did Jimmy James spend almost 5 years as a POW, but he escaped countless times. After being one of the "lucky" 23 recaptured from The Great Escape not to be murdered by the Nazis, he was sent to Sachsenhausen concentration camp, and he ESCAPED from there!!!
An amazing true story!

Duck & Goose hunting primer!.......2003-01-14
I found this book used and bought it to see what the going advice was in the early 1970s, when it was written. The title sums it up nicely, and gives a hint of the poetry he sees in the blind.
I was pleasantly surprised to see most of this book is still current. Norman has an appreciation for hunting and a respect for the birds we hunt; this comes through as you read his hard-earned advice. You can tell this is a man who has spent time in the cold water before sunup. You duck hunters will know what I mean. Norman spent quite a bit of time in Montana then, and his stories of how the Madison looks on a quiet morning as the birds are just starting to come off the water are familiar to me.
Many of his comments are dated, of course, as steel shot was not yet mandated as it is now. Still, this gave the book a timeless and nostalgic feel and that is why I take time to re-read it throughout the waterfowl season. It is comforting, like an old familiar Remington. You will enjoy this book and find it a frequent read in your hunting library.

Book Description
1995 marked the 50th anniversary of Stefan Banach's death. Until now, the general English speaking public has had no access to an in-depth life story of a mathematician whose name is one of those most often encountered in modern mathematical research. This small volume, originally written in Polish by a well-known reporter, is an effort to fill that gap in the biographical literature. It is based on original archival sources, dozens of interviews with people who knew and remember Banach, and conversations with mathematicians who are familiar with Banach's work and its impact on modern mathematics. The author presents engaging descriptions of Banach's personality and the unusual milieu in which he worked. Further, Chapter V focuses on the famous Scottish café, which like Banach himself, has achieved a mythical dimension in mathematical lore. The English edition has been revised to include new materials and many photographs, and to reflect the interests of a broader international audience.

For most health books, the word cure in the title is a definite sign to steer clear. The Diet Cure is a refreshing exception. Author Julia Ross has the unusual job description of "nutritional psychologist," which means that she works with people to eradicate food cravings, addictions, and eating disorders (including overeating). The gist of The Diet Cure plan is that food allergies, hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, and thyroid dysfunction, among other factors, cause biochemical imbalances that lead to food addiction and weight gain, and that these problems can usually be lessened or eradicated with the proper diet and supplements.
To be sure, most of these health problems ought to be diagnosed by a medical professional, but they often get overlooked because their symptoms can be numerous and vague (fatigue, depression, inability to concentrate). They're not easily diagnosed by the common managed-care tests (such as the TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, blood test; Ross advises several more specific tests if a thyroid problem is suspected). Ross's questionnaires, worksheets, and profiles of case studies from her 10 years of clinical experience will enable you to determine what may be the hidden causes that sabotage your weight-loss efforts.
Ross's book should be lauded for its educational tone. She warns of the dangers of zinc and vitamin B1 deficiencies, two common problems found in chronic dieters, along with protein and fat deficiencies and adrenal exhaustion (which is particularly common in caffeine fiends). She rails against the most popular diet programs, including the Zone, the Atkins Diet, and even Weight Watchers, for (among other things) their ignorance of food allergies such as grains, dairy products, and sugar. For those whom Ross terms, perhaps frighteningly, sugar addicts or "recreational sugar users," she suggests an amino-acid and fish-oil supplement plan to curb sugar cravings and aid weight loss. Many of her patients over the past decade testify in the book that their environmental allergies and weight-loss problems disappeared after they cut sugar from their diets.
Ross's suggestions may seem radical to many primary-care physicians; her approach to health and weight loss definitely takes a holistic approach. She does, however, back up her suggestions and plan with references to medical studies, along with dozens of print and online resources on finding a nutritionist, naturopathic physician, holistic M.D., and testing labs (many of them mail-order). This is one diet that Americans in particular ought to pay attention to.
Book Description
This fast, personalized body repair manual for weight loss, mood balance, and energy will leave you satisfied--not starving.
More than eighty million Americans are regular dieters and eight million of them suffer from some sort of eating disorder. Just as many eat normally but still gain weight. Finally, there is a plan to end yo-yo dieting and binge eating. Based on ten years of proven clinical results, The Diet Cure shatters the myths to reveal the real causes of overeating and weight gain. In this individualized program that begins with an 8-Step Quick Symptom Questionnaire, you'll discover your unique underlying biochemical imbalances--hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, food allergy/addictions, unrecognized thyroid dysfunction, and a deficiency of "good" fats. And you will learn how to eliminate them with your own targeted nutrition strategies.
A pioneer in the field of nutritional psychology, Julia Ross has developed a breakthrough method using amino acids to jump-start the program. You will feel your mood improve and your food cravings disappear within 24 hours. Charts, worksheets, and inspiring case histories from Ross's own clinic offer readers of Sugarbusters and Eat Right 4 Your Type a safe, easy-to-follow, customized program to rebalance their body chemistry and attain their ideal health weight for good.

A Miracle!.......2007-09-28
I am pretty savvy when it comes to nutrition and healthy living, I've read alot of books on this topic and have been eating whole organic foods most of my adult life. I avoid fast food, processed food, additives, simple sugars, wheat, etc. I add supplements here and there when needed, keep the meals balanced with the right amount of protien, carbs and fats, etc. I thought I was doing pretty good, at least in the top 20% so I thought. Well, Julia Ross has changed my life. Within a week on her program, the mental fog that has been slowly drifting into my existence over the past 10 years has lifted. My memory has improved as well as my focus and mental clarity. My sensitivity to life's pressures and stresses is cut by half. I have more energy and it is more consistent through the day. My carb addiction and afternoon blood sugar drops (I have often commented (half) jokingly about joining "bread addicts anonymous") are nothing like they were. After one week on her program, I have experienced a dramatic improvement in all these areas. The program lasts three months, I am truly excited to see the end results of this cure. I purchased this book for myself along with The Mood Cure for my husband and we have been going through the books together. We are both experiencing dramatic improvements in our lives. It is worth mentioning that I was not achieving results on the lower doses (she gives a range). Follow her instructions and increase your dose until you get results. It may seem like a lot of supplements, but stay with it and follow her instructions. Once I hit the right dosages, I got results very quickly. Julia Ross and her Nutritional Psychology colleagues call it science, but for us this information is a *blessing* of the highest order. Thank you Julia for making this information available to the masses!
Diet Cure.......2007-09-17
I liked the book and unlike most diet books as its primary role is to make one feel better rather than skinny. For those primarily interested in Amino Acids and the role of aminos in depression, anxiety, ocd, etc the Mood Cure is much better. The Mood Cure is written better, has much of the same information and diet suggestions and seems to be a rewrite of the Diet Cure, which could explain why the writing is better. At any rate both books come highly recommended. I have been following the amino acid suggestions and I must say, I feel better. Bravo!
Maks Sense of it All.......2007-07-27
Written for the lay person, but loaded with the scientific basis of nutrition and what the foods we eat do once inside our bodies. I'm following the advice given in the book and it has been spot on. I recognized a lot from college chemistry and biology, but this was far, far easier to understand and apply. I now look at food in a whole new light and feel better than I have in years. My only criticism would be that she continually refers you to other chapters, which made sense within the context of whatever subject she was on, but you had to keep going to the table of contents. It would have been helpful to have the chapter number included on the top of the right hand page so you could leaf through to the referred chapter quickly, but all in all a small inconvenience in an otherwise great experience. This book is a keeper for future reference, and I have already recommended it to some friends.
Top notch research.......2006-08-02
I work in molecular biology, and that has given me an understanding of cellular metabolism. In gaining this understanding, I have come to realize how horrific our American diets are. Unfortuneately, a few well meaning and misguided nutritionists and scientists earlier in teh twentieth century tried to reform our eating habits. These habits stuck, and now we have a country of fat unhealthy citizens. The more I read about nutrition, the more I understand what is wrong with our eating habits. The author has doen her research and has a very firm grasp on the concept of cellular metabolism. She references actual scientific studies that have been published. More and more literature is coming out debunking the food pyramid and extolling the health benefits of a high protein, low SIMPLE carb diet. This is not to be confused with diets such as Atkins, where all carbs are evil. Or diets such as weight watchers which encourage the consumption of processed foods. Or diets such as the Zone, whose recommended caloric intake is not enough to sustain basic cellular function. Diets such as South Beach are actually good models of a healthy eating plan. And amino acids, as Ms. Ross explains in her book, are the building blocks of proteins, whish are essential for our body to function. While her book does skip around, and can be a little hard to follow, it offers sound advice. Advice that sadly the rest of the world is slow to follow, out of ignorance.
Tons of information. Sometimes too much........2006-07-10
It can get a bit tedious at times and if you buy all the recommended supplements, you'll be spending a fortune. However, I did think the research was thorough and they had some really great points. Worth highlighting before passing along to someone.

This Book Cuts Alcohol Cravings Without Prescriptions!.......2007-07-31
I am so happy I came across this book at amazon. It's the only book I've
found that talks about how other alternative medicines and other cultures
view alcohol abuse and how to treat it. I was thinking about getting
prescription medication to cut the desire to drink but after reading this
I don't need to. There are lots of herbs to do that at the natural food
store. I've read Cornett's other book, 7 Weeks to Safe Social Drinking:
How to Effectively Moderate Your Alcohol Intake, and she always covers
interesting things.
For me the vitamin and supplement part was the best. It talks about things
you can buy over the counter to cut craving. The Chinese and Ayurveda
medicine parts were really interesting too.
I realize this is only one take on problem drinking. But if you take these
suggestions in the book, along with her program in her other book to
improve your drinking habits you can cut craving and consumption without
prescription medicine.
Brilliant! Why hasn't anyone written about this before?.......2006-07-21
I'm a drinker who has struggled on and off with booze for years and I'm ecstatic someone has finally written about a more organic approach to problem drinking. This book gave me a different perspective. I was especially interested in how chinese and ayurvedic medicine treat drinkers and the concept of "balancing" my life so booze becomes less important and I drink less.
This book opened my mind up. I guess no ones written about alternative medicine to address alcohol abuse because the disease concept and AA are so deeply ingrained in the US.

Yefim Shubentsov left the Soviet Union at age 40 to find freedom in the United States. Ironically, he came to realize that "many people in the free world are in a kind of prison as well": our addictions and cravings. He has taught 96,000 people to escape from food cravings and smoking addiction. Give up the idea of the magic bullet or quick fix--he wants us to "reject the miracles being peddled," grow tougher, and recapture our common sense. "Then, when you leave prison, there won't be a jail to send you back to. You will have destroyed it."
Shubentsov blames the "cult of self-esteem" and public opinion for stripping away our toughness and responsibility. Our cravings are not carved in stone because of our emotional histories, he says--they are under the control of our "creativity, common sense, and cleverness," tempered with patience and endurance. He describes a healing energy force he calls Bio Energy, a "sixth sense" we all can tap. The book is mostly motivation and psychological theory, with frequent case studies illustrating the points. Brief practical sections give techniques for developing your Bio Energy, losing weight, and quitting smoking. --Joan Price

A Year Later and Remain Smoke Free.......2005-06-05
I smoked for 30 years, tried to quit 7-8 times unsuccessfully, then came accross these tapes. I listened to them twice and found it EASY to quit!!! The information was exactly what I needed to learn. If it worked for me, it could work for you. Best Wishes in becoming SMOKE FREE!!!
I feel cheated!!.......2005-05-24
One thing I hate about ANY self-help book is to have to wade through lots of pages of preliminaries before I get to the heart of the book's message. Another thing I dislike is to read how to deal with an addiction that the author has no personal knowledge of. In this book, I had to wade to page 117 to chapter 7 before he gives the "exercises" that are suppose to awaken your "Bio Energy." Instead of reading word-for-word, I skim by only reading the first sentence in each paragraph. It's quite obvious that this author has never smoked during this lifetime because, as a former smoker myself, I can tell you that his "cold turkey" approach won't work. I totally agree with the review of 5Feb00 that the author looks down upon us in the United States; he thinks that Russians are toughter, probably because of those miserable winters. He gives reasons to quit and then says to use patience and determination to tolerate the three days of withdrawals. On page 162, he says that he wants you to quit without pills, without patches, without gum, without substitutes, and without weight gain. I've got news for the author: when strong emotions versus logic, logic always looses. On page 74, he states that, if people use the nicotine patches, folks must ". . .recognize that they have just shifted their addiction from one form of nicotine to another." I have another news flash for the guy: using the patch will (1) immediately cause you to quit inhaling poisons into your lungs from the tobacco smoke; (2) get you to break the strong habit of having a cigarette in your hand, putting it into your mouth, sucking on it, and then watching the smoke as you exhale; and (3) if you follow the instructions, teaches you the patience required as you realize that it will take weeks for you to totally quit comfortably. If you try to quit cold turkey, you will either repeatedly fail and feel miserable or you will quit, but you'll want a cigarette each day for the rest of your life. The latter possibility is most certainly NOT complete freedom from the addiction!!! Why not quit comfortably and completely with the patch instead of making things hard on yourself by trying to quit all at once with no help?
Great Book.......2001-12-27
I had the pleasure of meeting this man in person several years ago. This book is the next best thing if you can not "experience" him directly. He is very much into "energy" and that aspect is not found in the book.
WOW!.......2001-05-04
This was a really helpful book that acted as the light at the end of the tunnel when I was trying to quit smoking. I had wanted to quit for years and found it virtually impossible. This book helped me to achieve "the impossible."
Anyone who is adicted to something and reaching out for a book to help knows the truth--you're hooked and you need some help. Preaching a ton of facts that only make you feel worse won't help. Shubentsov cuts to the chase and reminds the reader of the inner strength each person has inside necessary to break the chains of addiction.
This book was by my side for the better part of a year as I continued to fight the urges with Shubentsov acting as my tough but loving coach. I have since passed my copy on to my mother and have bought copies for friends and other relatives that struggle with addictions.
If you're looking for someone to tell you that you have no control and that there is no hope for you, this is NOT the book for you. However, if you're looking to end the vicious cycle of addiction, PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. It may very well change your life...
Unwelcome news for Jenny Craig, Richard Simmons, etc........2001-01-28
This practical guide to overcoming addictive behavior should be required reading - if only for the controversial nature of the "boot-strapping" approach! Molly-coddled Americans will blanch at Shubentsov's take on dealing with our cravings: RESIST! Fight back! Stop being such a sissie! "What are you - a man or a mouse?" Personal initiative is prized here, and it's a refreshing change from the victim mentality offered by many therapies and so-called "self-help" programs. For help in steeling your resolve, read this book!
