    Book Description

Exciting, interesting and new memories come alive as Jack Stettner and his Buddies relate both past and present tales. Added to the original book, published just a year earlier, the stories unfold in a unique and inspiring interchange, with each author highlighting his own feelings as well as fact, wit and in some cases humor. Memories come alive in currency from the research of Ian Quinn, a Cathay Pacific Airline pilot, relaying events unfolding, such as the discovery of unexploded bombs (which he traced to Jack Stettner's mission 190), and a dramatic submarine rescue fifty six years ago just after a fortunately failed B-24 bombing attempt on this sub, (with Ian's research revealing the identity and location of the only current living survivor, a correspondent who was aboard the sub, and the B-24 pilot who following his fortunate miss, was not aware of the subsequent sub rescue of three downed B-25 crewmen in the waters just outside Hong Kong.)

      Book Description

Placed in a convent at the age of thirteen, Virginia Galilei, Galileo's eldest daughter, wrote to her father continually. Now Dava Sobel has translated into English all 124 surviving letters that Virginia (renamed Suor Maria Celeste at the convent) wrote to Galileo. The letters span a dramatic decade that included the Thirty Years' War, the bubonic plague, and the development of Galileo's own universe-changing discoveries. Suor Maria Celeste's letters touch on these events, but mostly they focus on details of everyday life that connect her and her father: descriptions of confections she sent to him; news of his estate, which she managed while he was on trial; a request for Galileo to fix the convent clock. Her prose reveals an exceptional woman and presents a memorable portrait of deep affection between a father and daughter.

Translated and annotated by Dava Sobel

5 out of 5 stars A Loving Daughter's Relationship with her Illustrious Father.......2005-07-12

Virginia Galilei entered the Convent of San Mateo near Florence at the age of thirteen, taking the name Maria Celeste. From then on Suor Maria rarely saw her father, though she wrote to him nearly every day. Although the letters Galileo wrote to his daughter do not survive, he kept the letters he received from Suor Maria, hence this volume. "Letters to Father" is a collection of 124 of her letters spanning the years 1623 to 1633, translated into English by best-selling author Dava Sobel ("Galileo's Daughter") and printed alongside the original Italian.

The period in history during which Suor Maria wrote these letters witnessed the occurence of such events as The Thirty Years War, the outbreak of the Black Plague, the election of a new Pope and, last but certainly not least, the arrest and trial of Galileo for heresy. Suor Maria, though cloistered in a convent, exhibits considerable knowledge of current events of the day through her commentary contained in her letters.

Sour Maria's letters also illustrate the loving relationship she shared with her father (apparently Galileo had a great love for candied fruits, which Suor Maria cheerfully made for him), as well as details of her day to day management of his estate while he was being held by church authorities, such as maintenance of the house, decanting casks of wine in the cellar (lower quality wine was given to the servants, who presumably wouldn't know better), etc.

Suor Maria's letters provide insights into Galileo's private life as well as the important events of the day. In reading these letters I felt as though I were getting to know Suor Maria, and I found the experience to be fascinating and sometimes moving.

Sadly, Suor Maria fell ill and died shortly after the last letter reprinted in "Letters to Father". Her letters are a fitting memorial to her life and her love for her father.

Busy parents of toddlers to teens will get a lot out of Nancy Samalin's Loving Without Spoiling. The book offers 100 mini how-to chapters on a vast array of parenting issues, such as stopping whining, streamlining morning routines, encouraging honesty, and making an uninterrupted phone call. The information is not in-depth and is occasionally culled from other parenting tomes, but the book is an easy read and an excellent jumping-off point for parents looking for new solutions to any number of age-old problems.

Samalin has been leading parenting workshops for the past 25 years. Many examples and much of the good advice presented in the book are drawn from the experience of the parents in these classes, as well as from her own family. Samalin recognizes the intense love that leads parents to make their children happy at the risk of encouraging self-centered, spoiled, even bratty behavior. Loving Without Spoiling focuses on helping parents to exercise their authority and raise well-behaved children without being too strict or squashing a child's spirit. Samalin's frequent advice is for parents to let children take responsibility for themselves, particularly in managing their relationships with siblings and friends, as well as in hot-button arenas like eating and doing homework. Samalin advocates letting children make their own food choices, do their own homework, and learn from experience. She doesn't counsel parents to let children be in charge, but rather reminds us that making mistakes is a necessary part of learning and that fostering learning is a tremendous part of a parent's job. --Jennifer Lindsay

5 out of 5 stars Support and specifics.......2006-11-12

Sometimes I read parenting books for inspiration, other times for nitty-gritty advice. In a tone that's respectful of parents as well as children, Samalin delivers both. She is terrific at empathizing with a parent's perspective (she understands what it's like to be an overwhelmed parent), yet keeps the child's well-being in clear focus. I appreciate the specific, solution-oriented advice (for setting limits while remaining supportive of your child, for example), as well as the pat on the back from this friendly, often humorous author. As usual, Samalin contributes to the fun of becoming a well educated parent.

          5 out of 5 stars WHAT A RELIEF!.......2006-11-04

Finally, a book I can actually use everyday! So many parenting books are great "in theory" but never work in practice. Nancy Samalin's book, Loving without Spoiling, saves my family from upset on a daily basis. I read parts of it over and over again, and it never fails to amaze me. I especially follow the "pick your battles" advice--this is so effective. Her simple suggestions to change the way you phrase requests are incredibly effective!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what the title says...and it works!.......2003-11-17

I read this book a few months ago and immediately took it to heart. It absolutely changed the way I think about discipline. The most interesting thing is that recently, I picked it up to browse through again, and was amazed at all the thoughts from the book that I have adopted as my own. So many tips I've used...so many anecdotes I've repeated to friends...so much GOOD STUFF that I've internalized since I read it the first time.

My husband read the book, too. He has for the past 4 years been a believer in the style of discipline promoted by John Rosemond: very authoritarian and a strict disciplinarian of the old school, "just like your grandmother." This style has become very popular lately, as American children seem to be more insolent, violent and disrespectful than ever before. A reversion to that old-time discipline seems, at first blush, to be the answer.

Although we certainly want our children to be well-behaved and respectful, we also want them to be happy and well-adjusted, not sneaky and defiant. After reading Samalin's thoughtful book, my husband and I have decided that we agree with Rosemond's goals, but not his methods. Samalin will give you options, and ways to be an authoritative parent, instead of an authoritarian one. THAT INSIGHT ALONE IS WORTH THE PRICE OF THIS BOOK, and there are many more.

I've never found one parenting book that has all the answers. In fact, the longer I'm a parent, the more convinced I am that there are no clear-cut instructions on discipline that are right for every child. But this book -- with its wonderful anecdotes, sample dialogues and calm, pragmatic suggestions -- is the one book I recommend above all others. I certainly wish my parents had read it.

5 out of 5 stars The best quick reference book on parenting.......2003-08-18

This book has become my most often referenced parenting book. Its format is ideal for 3-minute refresher courses on strategies. Today, I just re-read "End Morning Madness" and "Jump-Start the Dawdler" to help get ready for the first week of school. When you feel like there must be a better way to deal with a situation, but you are too stressed, distracted, or busy to calmly think it through, give yourself a time-out and run for this book.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for parents.......2003-08-05

This is the book I would like to hand every new parent as they begin their journey. Nancy Samalin has provided a map for parents to help them navigate the bumps and blind curves on the road to raising happy, responsible children. Experienced parents will recognize and appreciate the jewels of wisdom in this practical and wise guide to parenting.

I want to take a moment here to thank Georgeanne Brennan. With her "Mediterranean Herb Cookbook" she has done us all a favor.

Being a connoisseur of sorts when it comes to cookbooks (at least the ones the library allows me to get my hands on), I must start by saying how spotty most cookbooks are. Rarely do you come across a book that can handle putting two good recipes on opposing pages, much less giving you consistent ones throughout.

Yet Mrs. Brennan has done just that--her Mediterranean Herb Cookbook is filled with consistently great recipes. Not only that, there are a whole lot of recipes to choose from. From entrees, breads, and salads to drinks, marinades and spice mixtures--this book has it all.

If this is not enough, Mrs. Brennan provides information about the herbs themselves--their characteristics, how to grow them, how to dry and store them. This book is packed with great stuff!

In a book so filled with treasures, it is hard to pick a favorite recipe. Yet I believe that the Rosemary-Walnut Flatbread, if it has not become a favorite, will at least become a staple in my repertoire. It is an excellent variant on traditional flatbread (I used black walnuts and it was amazing).

I give "The Mediterranean Herb Cookbook" my full recommendation.

Georgeanne Brennan lives a charmed life with homes in both the US and Provence, France. She teaches regional cooking in France, emphasizing what is in season. This cookbook celebrates all our favorite herbs: Lavender, Rosemary, Mint, Oregano, Thyme and more. Luscious recipes for every course and helpful instructions for making simple dishes elegant are indicative of Ms. Brennan's expertise.
Whether you want to serve a stylish main course like Halibut Kabobs with Winter Savory and Lemon or a fun sweet like Apple Crumble with Lavender, the four recipe sections--Small Dishes, Salads and Soups, Main Courses, Breads and Sweets, and Basic Herbal Recipes--will provide ample selections. In Basic Herbal Recipes, Herb Blends like herbs de Provence, Herb Butters, Sauces, Marinades, Beverages, Oils and Vinegars are included (over 50 recipes in this section alone).

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about Herbs.......2000-07-06

Although this book is identified as a cookbook it contains much more than basic recipes. This book is targeted to the cook who not only wanders the supermarket aisles hoping to find fresh herbs but also the cook who grows his/her own herbs. Drawing the reader in with beautiful photographs this cookbook includes a section with a description of herbs divided into the categories of green herbs and woody herbs. I found the hints for what flavors the herb complements and how to prepare the herbs especially helpful. In addition to basic recipes for appetizers, main courses, and desserts, this cookbook also included a section for sauces, herb marinades, herb-flavored oil and vinegars, and beverages. The last part of the book is devoted to tips on growing herbs. This section provides a range of information - from ease of starting from seed to preferred growing conditions. This contains just the right amount of information for a cook to get started on an herb garden without overloading the reader with detailed gardening instructions.

                Book Description

Fresh herbs evoke images of healthful food, rustic and elegantly earthy. People love cooking with herbs, but most don't know how to use even the most common herbs to their fullest flavor. With award-winning author Linda Dannenberg's new cookbook, the home cook can fill this gap. The 85 easy-to-prepare recipes (from the south of France, the U.S., the Caribbean, Greece, Italy, and other countries) showcase myriad uses for a variety of herbs—from Provençal Tomato Tartelettes to Crème Brûlée with Lavender. Some are the creations of top chefs, including celebrated chef Philippe Legendre of the Hôtel George V, three-star chef Pierre Gagnaire, and Rocco DiSpirito of New York City's Union Pacific, but many also come from the author's own repertoire. In addition to the recipes, there are tips on less common uses for herbs. A glossary, describing the herbs and providing information on what foods they are most compatible with, how to prepare them, and how to store them, completes the book.
