Book Description

Imagine learning from a nosy classmate that your mother is having yet another baby. To Ralphs classmates, news of one more Fletcher baby is just scuttlebutt. But for Ralph, the oldest of nine, being part of a large family means more kids to join in the funfrom making tripods in the woods and snicking up the rug, to raising chicks and even discovering a meteor (well, maybe). It doesnt feel like theres life beyond Marshfield, Massachusetts. Then one day Dads new job moves the family to Chicago, and theres so much Ralph has to leave behind. In this humorous and captivating memoir, Ralph Fletcher traces the roots of his storytelling.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Funny, warm, poignant author memoir.......2006-10-09

In 35 short chapters, Ralph Fletcher shares stories of his childhood neighborhood, family, and friends. Covering topics that include a description of his neighborhood, his feelings and memories of the important people in his life, games he played, school days, pets, and childhood illnesses, this story kept me entranced from start to finish. I loved the author's simple yet moving revelation of his own feelings, especially the poignant chapter about his father, "Last Kiss."

Publisher information sets reader age at grades 5 to 8, but the kid-friendly layout of this book will appeal to readers in grades 2-4, particularly if read aloud. Teens working on author reports or personal essays will find the book interesting as well. Teachers will find this memoir a handy tool in writing workshops, if used in conjunction with specific writing topics such as description, characterization, or dialogue. Fletcher's use of details brings his stories to life. Student writers can learn much about turning ordinary life events and feelings into effective stories.

As an adult reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It's got a little something for every reader. I can't recommend this book enough for teachers. If you assign journal writing for young writers, this book will provide infinite topic inspiration.

Book Description

This illustrated story follows the memory of an old man as he reveals his past dreams, uncovering the commonality of young boys' thoughts and blurring the line between fantasy and reality. He is seen digging a hole to China, building the ultimate tree house, finding the end of the rainbow, battling a dragon to save a maiden, owning an outrageous ice cream shop, and other far-flung hijinx. As the dream-telling draws to a close, the reader sees the man surrounded by mementos of all his adventures, bringing to question whether or not those dreams came true, but leaving no doubt that the man still dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Blake of IHE.......2007-05-24

When I was a boy I dreamed is a fabulous book - it's really cool! Because it's cool that an old man dreams of stuff that he wanted to do when he was a boy. Because this book is as good as the book Go Ask Mom. It's as good as all of Justin Mattot's poems and books! Because it's really good and cool! I like the illustrations. An old man that dreams of stuff that he wanted to do when he was a boy. This old man is dreaming of the stuff, when he was a boy he dreamed of a dragon. He dreamed of a whale and a tree house. You should really read this book because there's an old man that dreams of stuff when he was a boy.

This book is being recognized all over America and now has been nominated for the Colorado Children's Book Award, which is a nomination by students all across Colorado and then voted on by students all across Colorado. Both the author and illustrator come from Colorado. This is just the start for the talent shown in this book. When I Was a Girl is an awesome book too. What a wonderful combination of story and illustration.
This book is impactful! The dreams are universal and have been experienced by kids of all ages. My grandpa used to tell me these kind of stories and dreams that he had and now I tell my own kids similiar stories. What a great book to curl up with and read at bedtime! A TOTAL PLEASURE. When I Was A Girl... I Dreamed is wonderful too, my daughter's favorite.

I bought this book for my four year old grandson, and we both loved the book. He chose that book to read first every night. The pictures are very detailed and the different activities are exactly activities that any boy would find exciting.

    Book Description

Poli Délano’s real name is Enrique. But when his mother was expecting him, Pablo Neruda, the great Chilean poet, took to calling him Policarpo. The name stuck and today Enrique Délano, also a noted Chilean writer, is still known as Poli. Besides his nickname, Poli Délano owes many happy childhood memories to Neruda. For a time, he and his parents, who were Chilean diplomats, lived in Mexico with the poet, his wife Delia, and their ornery pet badger. This delightful book recalls the period when he saw the fun-loving, eccentric Nerudas nearly every day. He learned a wide array of things from the man he called Tío Pablo — how to swim, what fate is, how to eat grasshoppers, how to talk to the spider-woman at the fair, and how to stand up to Nazis and bullies. Neruda’s almost childlike sense of joy, his love of nature, and his great enthusiasm for the world resonates with young readers.

              Book Description

From Hilary Knight, co-creator of the ever-popular Eloise series, and Charlotte Zolotow, a Caldecott Award-winning author, these two masterpieces of children's literature are relaunched in an unusual 2-in-1 flip-flop edition. Now, they appear for the first time in full color with water colors hand-applied to the original drawings by Hilary Knight himself.

In When I Have a Little Girl, a little girl (reminiscent of the irrepressible Eloise) daydreams about when she will have a child of her own. She fantasizes that her daughter will be allowed to do all the things that she could never do. Like wearing a party dress to school every day. Or having a bath only once a week.

In When I Have a Little Boy, a little boy imagines how he would behave if he had himself as a father. He gets away with a good deal more than he ever has. He stays up late to hobnob with the adults at his parents' parties. He eats ice cream sundaes all the time and sleeps in the yard whenever he wants.

Intended to be read by parents and children together, both stories hold a tender message both about being a child and having a child of one's own.

hillary knight's illustrations are of the quality rarely found in children's books anymore, detailed, witty, and charming. the list is wonderful and will bring back any adult's own memories of childhood longings/unfairness! wanting only to have pointy crayons, to pet every dog and cat regardless of pointy teeth or germs! i love this book, it's a classic and it's great that it's been republished.

I looked for this book for years now that I am that mother with a little girl. This is a charming story about a little girl who doesn't like her mother's rules, so she tells her mother (and all who will listen!) about how it will be when SHE is the mother. You can imagine the list...

For any princess or former princess who wanted chocolate ice cream for breakfast, this is your book! I'm almost forty, but remember it so clearly. I can't wait for my daughter to read it to hers some day!!!

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars Great book...........2006-01-02

Yes, the book doesn't have extraordinary exercise descriptions, but the essential exercises are described well... I don't think the point of the book was to describe exercises... the purpose was to explain to you "Complex training" and how it can help you achieve "Explosive power and strenght." If you want superb exercise descriptions, try his book Jumping into Plyometrics (That's the purpose of the book to describe plyometric exercises), but if you want to actually KNOW how to use complex training then this is the right book for you. If you are a beginner and know nothing of exercise I'd try another book, but if you're fairly seasoned and understand good training sense and technique then pick it up.

1 out of 5 stars Hastily fabricated .......2004-12-28

Although the author claims to have high credentials, he presents very lousy descriptions of exercises, with complete disregard to grace or esthetics.

As soon as you pass the well designed and colorful cover, you will be immersed in a collection of poorly sketched exercises. Each exercise is described in three or more steps, which provide no clue on the proper execution of exercise. Most of the exercise sketches are flawed and hint to the total lack of experience or exposure of the author to athletic performance.

Although the book was first published in 1996, there were then reasonable level of technical skills and knowledge with publishing good illustrations that the author disregarded.

5 out of 5 stars Great instruction for creating team workouts.......2002-08-05

This is an excellent book that is broken up into 3 parts delineating the nature of complex training, then the nuts and bolts of complex training, and finally how to customize a workout routine for your athlete or team.
It is my most frequently used resource on a shelf full of this type of material.

4 out of 5 stars Teaches neuromuscluar and strength speed.......2000-12-25

This book combines Weight training and plyometrics. This method is considered dangerous by many but if used correctly is extremly effective.

Two athletes in the USA were said to have improved their 100m best times by over a second, one of them improving from 12.3 down to 11.1 after a years use of this training method along side his sprint training.

If not used correctly this method of training could be the end of your athletic career. Do NOT build up too quickly. Use the preparation phase properly and ease off if you are still tired from any previous training session.

Used wisely you can pretty much abolish the idea that you have to be a born sprinter. Michael Johnson is a second quicker than most because in his training he also uses this method and has been for years.

I started my training a year ago and have improved my 400m time from 48.32 to 46.21 and I believe the complex training has had a major role to play in this.

                        A very good book.

If you'd consider a chef-inspired three-course meal for four for $20 the answer to your prayers, Chef on a Shoestring is a must-have. More often than not, following recipes shared by great chefs involves hours in the kitchen and breaking the bank, but this companion to the weekly segment of the same name on CBS's Saturday Early Show is proof that great food does not have to come at a great price. In the television show, the best chefs from around the U.S. are invited to take $20 to purchase their ingredients, and then they demonstrate how to make a three-course meal for four with what they've bought.

With advice such as "buy only as much as you need," use "all parts of an ingredient," and "buy in-season ingredients," the introduction is useful, and easy to understand. Although each chef prepares three courses at a time, the book is divided by course so you can mix and match the recipes. Each recipe begins with information from the chef on his inspiration and any changes he might have made to stay within budget. Richard Sandoval's Mahi Mahi Ceviche is based on the ones he learned to make in Guerrero, Mexico, early in his career. Mario Batali's Marinated Roasted Peppers with Goat Cheese, Olives, and Fett'unta hails from Southern Italy, where fett'unta refers to toast drizzled with olive oil. And Michael Romano's Warm Shrimp and Bean Salad with Arugula can be made with lobster if you don't mind going over budget.

Some of these recipes are sure to amaze you. David Reardon's Pan-Seared Scallops and Oyster Mushroom Sweet Potato Salad with Cilantro Ginger Vinaigrette may be a mouthful to say, but it can be made in less than 30 minutes. John Schenk's Chile-Rubbed London Broil with Barbecued Onions is rich, filling, and bursting with flavor. Erica Miller's Chocolate Banana Terrine is not only quick and easy to make, it's beautifully elegant to serve.

These recipes are delicious, impressive, surprisingly inexpensive, and easily prepared. The instructions are clear and simple, and, as if all this isn't appealing enough, all royalties from sales of this book are donated to Share Our Strength, a charitable foundation of creative professionals organized to fight hunger and poverty. --Leora Y. Cooking great meals doesn't require spending a fortune on ingredients. Each week on the CBS Saturday Early Show, a prominent chef is given twenty dollars to create a three-course meal for four. Chef on a Shoestring collects the best of those culinary delights to benefit Share Our Strength, one of the nation's leading antihunger, antipoverty organizations. These recipes, created by some of the most celebrated chefs in the country, may have been produced on a budget but are rich in every other way.

The recipes are organized into convenient categories, such as Finger Foods and Small Plates, Salads, Pasta and Risotto, Poultry, Meats, and Desserts, to allow you to mix and match various courses from different chefs. You can begin a meal with Salmon Corn Cakes from Walter Staib of Philadelphia's historic City Tavern, serve Seared Chicken Breast with Red Onion Vinaigrette from Charlie Palmer of Aureole in New York as your main course, and finish with Beacon restaurant's Waldy Malouf's Best Chocolate Chip Cookies. Or try the Asparagus and Bean Sprout Salad with Dill Pesto from Aquavit's Marcus Samuelsson, Tom Douglas's Crispy Fried Snapper with Chili Ponzu, and Coconut Rice Pudding with Fresh Mango from John Villa. Spice up your favorite burger or grilled chicken with Barbecued Onions from John Schenk of Clementine, and from '21' try Erik Blauberg's Baby Arugula Greens with Watermelon "Croutons" and Caesar Dressing, to jump-start a weeknight dinner.

Illustrated with eight pages of beautiful color photographs, with advice on stocking your pantry, buying in season, shopping on a budget, and avoiding the temptation to be too frugal, Chef on a Shoestring is a unique culinary adventure for taste-conscious, budget-conscious home cooks.

4 out of 5 stars First of all, it's $40.00 for a meal for 4........2005-08-27

I always watch the Saturday Morning show and look for the Chef on a Shoestring spot. 99% of the time I find at least one recipe that is innovative. This book gives some of the best that have been broadcast. I would recommend it to anyone that likes to try new tastes and experience some "New York" menu items. Personally if a recipe is a good one I don't care too much about what the cost is for the ingredients, my guests and I deserve the best.

3 out of 5 stars Good recipes, but not really on a shoestring.......2004-06-15

I took this book out of the library before I committed to purchasing it, and I'm glad I did so. While I like the premise, this book wasn't compelling enough to make me feel as though it had to be in my collection.

There are, indeed, some very good recipes in here, as the other reviewers mentioned. Nothing that I couldn't live without, but I could certainly put together a few Sunday dinners from this list.

However, I'm dubious about the claim that each of these chefs put together a dinner for four on $20. If they managed it, they certainly don't shop where I do.

To be fair, one of the tenets of cooking frugally is to buy in season -- a point the compilers and the chefs do make. One additional suggestion, which they didn't highlight but should, is to buy locally. There's no way that, in Arizona, I'm going to buy *any* amount of lobster (for an appetizer, even) and keep the dinner budget under $20. Back when I lived on an island off the coast of Maine, where the dinner decision is "Do you want lobster, honey, or would you prefer a hamburger?" it would have been another story. (You don't want to know what we Arizonans have to play for blueberries, either.)

As it turns out, most of the contributors to this cookbook are on one coast or another, so many of the most delicious-sounding recipes will exceed the arbitrary dollar amount.

That doesn't mean that this isn't a good cookbook. It really is quite nice. But if your eye moved to this listing because you're trying to cook well on a budget, you'll be disappointed. (As just one alternative... back when I had to watch every penny, I found Molly Katzen's original Moosewood Cookbook to be a good way to eat well and still have money left at the end of the week.)

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Have/HaveNot Watched the TV Series.......2001-02-19

Not being much of a TV watcher, never knew this was there. Now, I'll watch every now and then. The concept is terrific, shop with only $20 and then create some gorgeous food.

To date have completed these dishes and found them to be innovative, complex, yet the price is just outstanding and time and techniques involved are achievable for wide grouping of cooks: loved this one: Peter Kelly's Roasted Onions with Bacon and Apple Stuffing; Walter Staib's Curried French Lentil Salad and Sausage; David Walrog's Asparagus and Cremini Mushroom Barley Risotto; and these are out of this world -- "Rick Moonen's Salmon Burgers with Green Tartar Sauce."

Bonus is with this purchase that CBS donates the royalties to Share the Strength. As the cookbook in memory of Patrick Clark, cooks everywhere will want this for themselves as well as gift-giving not only for the excellent dishes but also for the cause of charity.

4 out of 5 stars Actually worth reading- Certainly worth the price!.......2001-01-15

As a rule, I don't concern myself with compilation cook books. I simply don't like the "K-Tel" feel of the disjointed conglomerations of food from cooks that may or may not have even heard of one another. This book is surprizingly cohesive. The recipes are not really ones that I would have sought out individually, but of the ones my wife and I have tried, we've been pleased with the results.

This is certainly not the end-all be-all of the cooking world in a book, but there are some surprizes for those willing to experiment. Not the least of which really is the fact that these recipes are inexpensive. I was kind of shocked. Okay, I was really shocked. The ingredients aren't that tough to find, either. I've actually bought books that I still have yet to find some of the ingredients listed, but they offer "substitute" ingredients. . . It really makes me wonder what the real ingredient would have done for the flavor.

Why not 5 stars? Regardless of the recipes that I liked, it is still a compilation cookbook, and there are some pretty far to one side or the other recipes. I like knowing what I'm buying in advance.

I still recommend this book to anyone willing to try something new!
