That's what the Army's like.......2001-01-27
This is a funny and insightful book about life in the Army not only in the 70s but today as well. Haraldson morphed her life and Army life in language that makes the book a quick and fun read. Couldn't put it down!

Book Description
In the folklore of mathematics, James Joseph Sylvester (1814-1897) is the eccentric, hot-tempered, sword-cane-wielding, nineteenth-century British Jew who, together with the taciturn Arthur Cayley, developed a theory and language of invariants that then died spectacularly in the 1890s as a result of David Hilbert's groundbreaking, `modern' techniques. This, like all folklore, has some grounding in fact but owes much to fiction. The present volume brings together for the first time 140 letters from Sylvester's correspondence in an effort to establish the true picture. It reveals - through the letters as well as through the detailed mathematical and historical commentary accompanying them - Sylvester the friend, man of principle, mathematician, poet, professor, scientific activist, social observer, traveller. It also provides a detailed look at Sylvester's thoughts and thought processes as it shows him acting in both personal and professional spheres over the course of his eighty-two year life. The Sylvester who emerges from this analysis - unlike the Sylvester of the folkloric caricature - offers deep insight into the development of the technical and social structures of mathematics.

Atoms, Radiation, and Radiation Protection, 2nd Edition
ASIN: 0071054618 |
Book Description
This edition continues to provide students with a basic understanding of the biophysical bases of radiation, radiation safety standards, and the key factors in radiation protection. Now includes new coverage of non-ionizing radiation-laser and microwaves, computer use in dose calculation and dose limit recommendations. Emphasizes a problem-solving approach that will serve students into their clinical careers.
Customer Reviews:
New edition marred by typos and awkward editing.......1998-11-01
This new edition of the classic text is a disappointment, and it's use as a textbook is not recommended.
For this 3d edition, the list of typographical errors compiled by colleagues and myself stands at four pages and growing. Errors can be found in the text, the chapter problems, and their solutions. Other solutions which are not clearly wrong may inexplicably differ from your own solution at the second significant digit.
Formulae are rarely derived from first principles. One exception is the change in wavelength for a photon undergoing Compton scattering from an electron, but, even here, a crucial equation (the relativistic energy invariant) is conspicuously omitted, without which the final equation cannot be derived. The text does not even mention relativity in discussing Compton scattering. (The index does reference "Relatively effects" (sic) at pp. 4-11.)
Equations and formulae contain, at times, an unnecessary proliferation of multiplication signs and units which obscures the underlying physical principles and the simplicity of the equations themselves. Students are better served by a clear mathematical presentation of the underlying physics, rather than being dropped into the middle of an obscure equation made even more so by the inclusion of several constants whose only purpose is to make the units work out. While any text on this subject must deal with the unavoidability of old and new units, my suggestion is to derive the formulae from first principles and deal with the units issue (which, after all, only amounts to including appropriate conversion factors) separately as examples or chapter problems.
Finally, the multiplication sign, "x", should be reserved for arithmetic and scientific notation, not symbolic mathematical equations. See, e.g., Equations (3.10), (4.31), (10.17), (10.32), etc., as examples where the multiplication sign is unnecessary. The text also uses the multiplication sign even where numerical values are already set off by parentheses. The text's overuse of the multiplication sign gives the text a grade-schoolish flavor.
Useful general text on radiation protection and safety.......1998-01-02
In over 25 years since its first edition, this classic textbook has been used to train countless professionals in the fundamentals of radiation protection and safety. This third edition of Cember's work incorporates several fundamental changes in radiation protection standards and methodologies adopted since publication of the second edition in 1983. The third edition has also been expanded to include more recent safety standards for radiofrequency and microwave exposure.
This textbook is useful for an upper division undergraduate or first graduate course in radiological protection, health physics, or radiation safety. Each chapter is accompanied by a useful set of problems and suggested readings. Unfortunately, many of the readings and references cited are either out of print or difficult to find.

A practical how to do it book........1998-07-10
I am a Medical Physicist in the UK and although this book was writen for trainee Clinicians, I found it of interest as a how to do it book to supplement my training and experience. Although others could no doubt critisise its approach or philisophical basis, if you want to know how and are not too concerned with the theory it is worth reading.

In addition to relocating revised practice problems and answers to a newly created Course Notes and Workbook for Introduction to Sound, the third edition also introduces new features.
Customer Reviews:
Great book..very cut and dry.......2006-08-06
I was required to buy and basically memorize this entire book for class and it was very good; i learned more than the basics, that's for sure. However, my classmates thought it was a little cut and dry and that some parts were a tad confusing.
good reference text.......2003-03-20
A bit of a challenge to read at times, but great for use as a reference. Covers more than the basics of sound transmission and all the associated physical science. Concepts are clearly and thoroughly explained. If you like the hard facts all the math you could ever hope to have is here - and if you don't like the math it's easy to ignore without losing the message. I'm glad to have the book and equally glad it wasn't my required text for Hearing Science.

For Bob Blumer, otherwise known as the Surreal Gourmet, cooking is less a craft and more performance art. In Off the Eaten Path, Blumer forgoes traditional tools and cooking methods for the extremely unconventional, like using a dishwasher to poach fish, a car engine to sizzle shrimp, and an iron to literally press a toasted cheese sandwich to crispness. Blumer wants to shock you, and if such recipes as Blackened Home-Fried Potatoes from Hell, Pyrotechnic Pineapple, and Love Me Tenderloin don't get his point across, the chapter on "Surreal Meals" certainly will. Here, appearances are meant to deceive: salmon has been cut to look like carrots, melon and prosciutto arranged to resemble ham and eggs, and pound cake cut into "fries" and served with a squeeze bottle of raspberry "ketchup." In light of all this, Off the Eaten Path seems less a cookbook than a novelty item you'll keep on your coffee table or give as a gag gift. And so it is, but you'll definitely be amused. --Sumi Hahn Almquist
Book Description
Have you ever made watermelon margaritas, baked fish in a brown paper lunch bag, or created a meal inspired by the film Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? If not, let Bob Blumer, The Surreal Gourmet, jump-start your culinary repertoire.
Bob Blumer is today's most imaginative food personality. Whether he is poaching salmon in the dishwasher on the Food Network or designing a "surreal meal" for the Salvador Dali Museum, his wholly unique approach to cooking transforms everyday ingredients into a dining adventure.
With his contagious enthusiasm, Blumer ignites the culinary creativity hidden in everyone, then demystifies the process and demonstrates how cooking can become the springboard to a higher quality of life--whether you are making an intimate dinner for two, entertaining friends, or ironing a midnight snack. Off the Eaten Path's brightly flavored recipes, casual tone, and confidence-inspiring instructions are guaranteed to transform any cook into a culinary hero. Inside learn how to create
EXTREME CUISINE: Recipes and detailed instructions for cooking in your dishwasher, on your car engine, with your iron, and in a brown paper lunch bag
SURREAL MEALS: Cocktails, appetizers, and meals concocted from one set of ingredients--but presented in unexpected and visually arresting ways
"NOT LUCK" DINNER PARTIES: Just like a pot luck dinner--but tastier! Seven friends bring a designated ingredient (and a bottle of wine), and you assemble the meal
CINEMATIC SUPPERS: Cocktails, spiced popcorn, and main courses inspired by the author's five favorite food-related movies--to be enjoyed while watching the video
WINNER DINNERS: Five deceptively simple menus--all killer, no filler
Plus--music to cook and dine by - shopping tips - foolproof wine recommendations - whimsical illustrations by the author - and more fun than a food fight
Customer Reviews:
Fun With Food and Bob.......2003-11-16
The Surreal Gourmet leads the way into fun with food. From a themed meal to fun named dishes, the food here is good and will expand one's entry into gourmetland if you're not there already.
What I really enjoy about this guy's work is the energy and enthusiasm he brings to it, which in turn opens up the rest of us who are into doing new things with food and menus and such.
The "Drive In" recipes are fun as packages are manifold heated and the "Brown Bag" dinners are the best, especially get into "Sea Bass with Papaya Salsa."
Drinks are here too, such as "Raspberry Martini", but please take everyone's keys first.
Pepper-Crusted Maple Glazed Salmon is a winner and keeper recipe as well as Grilled Raisin Bread Stilton and Pear Dessertwich!
Play with your food and bring Bob along. Good stuff!
The path to easy, fun and yummy.......2003-01-10
I own all of Bob's books. In addition to offering simple delicious food they are just plain fun to read. You'll get much more than recipes. There are ideas for super easy, very elegant presentations and menus. This is the book to turn to when you're planning a dinner party and you want to have as much fun as your guests.Catch Bob's new show on the Food Network, too. (The candied salmon is to die for by the way)
Cooking outside the box.......2003-01-02
this is a really fun book. It really changes the way you think about your food. Even if you don't like to cook, Blumer will make you want to get into the kitchen. I've made several of his recipes and they have all been really wonderful. Not to mention providing a springboard to work on my own ideas.
I love it!.......2002-05-12
As a creative person, the image on the cover reminded me of something I would do. As I flipped the pages, my smiles turned into little giggles. The clincher was when I discovered that Bob was the artist of all the artwork in the book. Wow! The book is very creative, laid back, and funny. If it doesn't create one spark of inspiration in the fun side of you, then you need to check your pulse to see if you are alive.
I gotta go check out the other books by Bob Blumer now!

Play With Your Food.......2001-08-13
In "Off The Eaten Path" cookbook author, and closet comedian, Bob Blumer gives you permission to play with your food. Honest! Through very achievable recipes, several unusual techniques, and some of the most comical photos youýll ever set your eyes on, he demonstrates that cooking doesn't have to be a chore. All this without using bizarre ingredients or equipment, Ok, a dishwasher might be construed as bizarre. Hey! People once thought deep-frying a turkey was weird and now look.
I'm still working up the nerve to try "Dishwasher Salmon with Piquant Dill Sauce" but I can swear by "Brown-Bagged Lemon-Tarragon Chicken with Capers". His paper bag technique may just replace the need for expensive parchment paper. I don't like creamed vegetables but "(I Can't Believe It's Not) Creamed Corn" from "Slammin' Salmon Extravaganza" is a keeper especially now that corn is in season. It is pure creamy sweet goodness.
There may be a lifted recipe or two in the "Extreme Cuisine" chapter but that's one chapter and there's so much more to this book.
