5 out of 5 stars Extremely Valuable Substitute for Institutional Memory.......1999-07-18

I have been using, studying, and analyzing U.S. individual equipment since 1950. I have been publishing articles since the 1960s on the development and evolution of individual equipment, especially the load bearing equipment (LBE) (i.e. , packs, bags, and cases ) used to carry items used for living (surviving) in the field and remaining fit to fight until the objective is taken.
It is easy to determine what was done by studying the item, when by historical research and looking at the object's markings, who by the same, where by looking at images and reading memoirs, but it is very often difficult to determine why a certain thing was done just by looking at it. This book is extremely valuable for the researcher and developer; it explains just why certain things were done, what was tried, and what was best to do the job.
But of course, troops do not live only in jungles, they need training and special items for field living in every clime. This book covers only that for tropical living and fighting. Nonetheless, many of its principles are of world wide application. And in space as well.
There were two parallel threads of development of equipment for field living during WWII. The first is described by the author, the development of special equipment not only for "jungle living", but also for jungle fighting. This is a more difficult task, as the items developed are not for one time or occasional use in an emergency, but must also be of enduring and robust construction for long use in extremely difficult conditions.
The other thread had two strands, the first, was the world wide need for downed aviators to survive in extreme weather conditions world wide. The development of this kind of materiel ended up in the hands of the U.S. Army Air Forces and the Naval Aviation branch. Not only was training needed, the equipment, being intended only for living in the jungle or desert or arctic until rescue, did not need to be robust but it did need to be useful, and small enough in bulk to be worn as part of the individual's flying gear, or able to be quickly attached thereto. So robustness was sacrificed for compactness.
The other major development in the Pacific and Asian operational areas, was training intended for members of ground units, not necessarily cut off from their own side, who, might or might not be, equipped with special jungle fighting materiel, who, first, needed to be convinced that not every creature in the jungle wanted them for lunch, and, second, how to make themselves as comfortable as possible under given conditions for as long a time as possible, with or without enemy activity in the vicinity.
This latter required training in the safe use of commonly available cutting tools such as sheath knives and machetes, and the recognition of edible plants and wild life. This training in "jungle living" was given in many theaters. One of the leading lights was Dr. Kenneth Emory of the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. He had spent many years living and studying among the natives of the SW Pacific islands. His story is covered in the book entitled "Keneti".
Related to jungle living were courses in "Getting Along With the Locals". On many islands, the Japanese occupiers had brutalized the inhabitants to the point where they were happy to rescue downed aviators and to help the ground troops when possible.
The great value of this book is that it puts in a readily available place, the distilled knowledge of the useful equipment needed to live, work, and fight in the jungles of the world. Ever since 1949, the U.S. Army was set up, trained, and equipped for the "Big One"-- the invasion of Western Europe by the Red Hordes of the East. Jungle warfare was a sideshow, abandoned as a matter of consideration just after the defeat of Japan. In fact, even in Vietnam, we persisted in using heavily armed mechanized units against lightly equipped guerillas.
The most widely used individual piece of LBE in Vietnam, the Lightweight Rucksack, had not been designed for the jungle at all, but for use in the Arctic winter, and constantly clashed with the items carried on the individual's belt.
These are the lessons detailed in this book. When the time comes when we are again seriously interested in jungle equipment again, the powers that be can turn to this work. (They will certainly not seek out obscure articles written by myself and my fellow historians and well-buried reports writen by designers and analysts.) Those who served as platoon and company commanders in Vietnam were the generals who ran the Gulf War. They won the "Big One". Same kind of war, just a thousand miles to the south.
Colin Powell and his cohorts are now retired. The institutional memory of Vietnam and its jungle setting is now gone from our forces.

5 out of 5 stars Highly readable history of infantry equipment development.......1998-12-27

Jungle SNAFUs is the highly readable account of the hard-won development of numerous items of jungle warfare equipment. The author tells both his personal experiences of the testing and procurement difficulties as well as makes specific recommendations for the most useful and lifesaving items every soldier should have. Anyone interested in the military - both at its best and at its worst - and anyone interested in saving the lives of men and women who bear arms for our country should read this book. Fascinating, with many rare photographs. I highly recommend it!

Critical, combat proven life saving information needed for anyone's child in military service

This book is absolutely necessary for anyone with children in the military, especially Special Forces. Cresson includes detailed simple instructions on making/getting items that the military forgot to give or thrifted out of the budget. Proven methods for keeping the soldiers M-16 from jamming due to sand and snow. Proven methods for the prevention of drowning for combat laden soldiers (did you see the men drowing in Private Ryan?). Proven methods to mosquito proof clothing for months/years to prevent transmission of bug born diseases. If you have children in the military, get this book. Even though I am not in the military I learned and used many things from this book. Cressons life saving items have been used in all wars from WWII through Destert Storm and still today. The endorsements on the back cover do a better job than I ever could. I quote:

"....this book provides an amazing revelation of first hand stories and anecdotes that enable the reader to gain ideas and examples of how imaginative thinking by combat leaders can avoid disasters, save lives, and win battles. The book is a fun read and covers many areas unrelated to jungles. I strongly recommend that all leaders, especially those in infantry and Special Operations units, read this fascinating collection of combat wisdom." John K. Singlaub - Major General U.S. Army (Ret.)

"This book includes descriptions of much of the combat-proven equipment, ranging from lightweight breath-inflated boats and individual flotation devices to cool mosquito-protective uniforms, that again should be produced and issued to American soldiers. Teams from my Jungle Platoon needed such equipment when reconnoitering some 40 Japanese-held islands and destroying installations. Nor would all 11 Rangers of the team I commanded have been drowned off Omaha Beech had they had the breath-inflated bladders issued late in WWII to many thousands of our soldiers fighting Japanese invaders." Geroge C. Ferguson - Command Sergeant Major of CONARC (12 purple hearts awarded).

this book is: "Dedicated to American infantrymen, who in our future wars will continue to pay the greatest costs."

Book Description

Bianchi's story is an uproarious version of the classic tale of babies who happen to be switched at birth. This accident brings together two families of hogs with very different lifestyles--"Wild Bill" Boar and his wife Flora, a pair of tusked yahoos, come face to face with the refined manners of the upwardly mobile Pigs.

John Bianchi's fourth solo book for children is filled with this wonderful sense of humor and fabulous cartoon-like illustrations.

Who hasn't wondered whether, perhaps, their children were switched at birth with some diametrically opposite family you just can't understand? Er.. or is that just me?

This hilarious story of families forced into friendship serves the healthy message "Just because we're different doesn't mean we can't be friends" -- but what we love most are the guaranteed laughs it gets time after time after time.

3 out of 5 stars GOOD IDEA FOR A BOOK, BAD EXECUTION.......1998-09-29

Author Geoffrey Regan wanted to write a book which could have well been titled "The Wrong Stuff". Military blunders and disasters so incredibly stupid they defy explanation of how some General or Admiral ever rose to a place of command authority.

The biggest bone I have to pick with Regan is that there are lots of small historical errors in his book. So many that the reader is left to wonder about both the quality of Regan's historical research, and the quality of the book's editing. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was at Gettysburg. Regan didn't even get Chamberlain's first name right. The book has several errors like this, and military historians and history buffs alike will find SNAFU very annoying, and very unprofessionally researched.

The cover notes of the book also speak of Custer's infamous battle of the Little Bighorn -- yet there is absolutely NO chapter in this book on the battle -- only a passing note in Regan's conclusions at the end.

Even a snappy prose line cannot overcome a lack of thorough historical research.

SNAFU was an entertaining piece of history, but flawed in its research, editing and writing. The reader is left with the view that the author does not know what he is talking about. If any military historian ever writes a book on Great Disasters in Historical Writing, SNAFU will take up a well deserved and prominent, whole chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Practical Parental Tips for School-Age Children Phobias.......2005-03-08

Yikes! It's Due Tomorrow?!: How to Handle School Snafus is a parent's reference guide to answers of how to handle your grade-school child's "crises" or mishaps that can be done so easily without muddling through an encyclopedia.

After the first school bell rings, what if my friend is in a different classroom or if I don't like my teacher or I get lost at school? Answers are given to these valid grade-school problems by first giving parents an insight into children's thought processes and then following up with Insider tips and creative ways to work out these problems for young children from a former elementary school teacher and parent, Carmella Van Vleet.

For example, Carmella Van Vleet suggests that when a child is having trouble getting lost in the school building to help the child draw a map, depending on the age of your child, and use a variety of games such as "counting" the steps to get to different locations in the building. This will give the child a sense of distance from one classroom to another and diminish their fears and trauma. Another trying problem for children are bullies-those who are or those being bullied. Excellent information on this topic. These are just a couple of issues addressed, among many helpful tips.

Other real life snafus your child may experience:

** being late for school
** classroom situations
** academic issues
** playground problems
** homework issues
** miscellaneous

Excellent common-sense advice for helping your child with problems that arise in growing up in the school environment. It is a refresher course for parents on handling homework issues, friendship questions, common phobias, gifts to give a school teacher, and parent-teacher conferences help. Easy-to-use practical parental tips in a fun and humorous way.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-01-05

This is a great book for those of us with school-aged kids. My first child started school this year and I am so glad to have a book like this. This book covers such a wide range of issues, from riding the bus to not getting along with a teacher, to being afraid to use the bathroom....and issues I have never even thought of. I'm finding this book helpful to me to look forward to potential problems and already have some ideas of how to cope with them. I even got this years teachers' Christmas presents from the last page of the book. I definately reccommend this book to everyone with kids in school.

5 out of 5 stars A typical Saturday.......2001-10-15

Animal House may be the most well-known movie about college fraternity life, but the most accurate book about college fraternity life has to be Brian D. Pipia's Snafu. If you really want to know about life on a typical Saturday in thousands of fraternities across America, then read Snafu. While there are probably many fraternity brothers out there who have shared similar experiences over the course of a college career, what Mr. Pipia accomplishes in a single day is truly amazing. Some of his stories are disturbing. He does not hold back and is unbound by the traditional format of writing. There is no good-guy character or characters. At times, I found myself rooting against the main characters, and actually appalled and disgusted with them. But at the same time, I could not put the book down. As I read the book, I laughed and saw myself in my own fraternity house reliving similar experiences. Mr. Pipia shows abundant examples of fraternity mayhem, but at the same time, gives insight into the strange and strong bonds of brotherhood. In addition to drinking, smoking, and hooking up, and despite the mayhem and chaos he created, Mr. Pipia also proves that his college experience (intentional or not) provided him with the tools to write a very comprehensible book. Snafu is a must-read for current and past fraternity members who want to remember and laugh, but a definite do-not-read for any mother of a prospective pledge.

4 out of 5 stars Reflections of Youth.......2000-11-03

While I thumbed through this well written book, I could see many similarities between my college experiences and the ones in the book. Of course, my experiences weren't as colorful or adventurous, but all the same they were adventures! The author tapped into the sense one feels as they reflect upon the time they have spent here on earth. By all accounts what we remember becomes what we either repeat or avoid. I found many of the characters could've been guys I went to college with or knew through friends. The way they bonded as true brothers made me think of the great friendships my guy friends have always had. This unique difference between guys and girls, friendship wise, is that guys don't dwell on the pety things in life and enjoy all the time they do get to spend with their friends. I applaud the author for showing these friendships through all of their escapades.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the Faint of Heart.......2000-10-06

If you believe in political correctness or that the world should be full of gumdrops, roses and big hugs, this book is definitely not for you. If, however, you are looking for a raucous romp that will at times make you laugh out loud and at other times cringe, you should check it out. I found this book to be a quick and easy read (you could probably read the whole thing on a three hour flight) that brought back some memories from my college days. While the characters may not be the most likable people, if you did any partying while you were in college you will be able to relate to them. In sum, the book is a little rough around the edges and will make you squirm at times, but overall it is a light, fun and enjoyable read.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who can read!.......2000-10-06

This could very well be the most accurate depiction of Frat life ever written. The heart-warming stories of twisted sexual perversion and brutal, merciless violece made me want to drop everthing I was doing and go pledge. I haven't decided yet whether the author is bordering on criminal insanity, but I don't care. This book touched me. It also made me wet myself, numerous times. Read this book with someone you love. Bravo! Brian D Pipia, Bravo!

    Book Description

As the fifth anniversary of "9/11" approaches, our government still has not figured out an efficient and effective system of airline passenger screening. Back during 1969-70, the Federal Aviation Administration''s anti-skyjacking task force developed a viable procedure to screen passengers using a "profile" as step one. This was followed by a "weapons" search with a magnetometer, and concluding with an extensive interview. Following a test at nine airports using one airline, the procedure''s final test was with all airlines at one airport - New Orleans. The conclusion was that the "profile" eliminated at least 98 percent of the flying public! Not only did the American Civil Liberties Union approve of the "profile" because it was not racial, but a New York Federal Court judge rule it did not violate the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. So, why was this proven system abandoned in favor of searching every passenger? The answer is found in two words - bureaucracy and politics. The previous book on this subject, NINE/ELEVEN, detailed why ignoring this sequential procedure could be the primary factor why "9/11" was able to take place. From all available evidence, all 19 terrorists fit enough of that ignored profile to have been detained long enough to miss their flights. Even screening every passenger, most often humiliating many innocent air travelers, has accelerated - but without any proven results. In the prologue to this updated sequel to NINE/ELEVEN, I point out that the method our task force used more than three decades ago should be the one adapted to modern day terrorism. "Airline passenger screening by the Transportation Security Administration n particular, and Mideast terrorism in general, have elements in common. The government should relearn the basic meticulous approaches and conclusions from the original screening program. Mideast terrorists have outsmarted us by switching targets and tactics. (1) Mideast terrorists have easier targets of opportuni

Heart ailments kill more men and women in our country than any other disease--and every tissue in our body depends on the heart for survival. That makes this updated classic from one of the world's foremost medical centers a must-have reference guide for those who've already been diagnosed with heart disease, and for those at risk for developing it (which, given our dietary habits and the prevalence of obesity, is basically the majority of Americans--studies show the arteries of most teens are already partially clogged).

More than 125 Mayo Clinic specialists were called upon to contribute to this comprehensive book, which is divided into five sections: part 1 describes how your heart and circulatory system work; part 2 educates you about the various types of heart disease you can develop; part 3 reviews risk factors; part 4 covers diagnosis--from blood tests to electrocardiograms and cardiac catheterizations; and part 5 looks at the latest and most effective drug, device, and surgical treatments. All of the sections are complemented by detailed, color and black-and-white illustrations and photographs. There's even a fabulous 16-page color atlas of the heart and circulatory system.

The Mayo Clinic Heart Book will also help you to recognize the signs and symptoms of heart disease (most heart attack patients have more indigestion and arm pain than chest pain), as well as when a trip to the emergency room is warranted or critical. It prepares you for a variety of potential treatment scenarios, and offers a glimpse of a typical rehabilitation and recovery schedule after a heart attack or operation. And it offers up more than 80 tips for preventing heart disease in the first place. All in all, this is information that just may save your life. --Nancy Monson

                5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Heart Book.......2000-07-20

There are quite a few books on this subject on the market and this one is the best. It covers almost everything you want to know about the human heart and the content is easy to read.

It is not aimed at the professionals only and layman like me can get to know how my heart works casually. It includes the mechanism of the heart, causes of various heart diseases/problems, symptoms, ways of treatment, heart health ...etc. Very comprehensive and well organised.

I would recommend this book to those who want to know more about our hearts.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Heart Book.......2000-07-13

This book has everything you want to know about the human heart. It includes how the heart works, factors affecting the heart's health, symptoms of Cardio Vascular Diseases, preventions, types of treatment . . .

If you or your love ones have CVD, this book can help to get a clear understanding of it. A very good source of information on the heart.

This is not a book for professionals only, anyone will enjoy reading it for good health.

5 out of 5 stars A Nursing Students' Helpful Sidekick.......2000-05-04

As a nursing student who has a hard time completely understanding difficult text books, this book gave me a great head start for my studies. The Mayo Clinic Heart Book gives understandable yet detailed explainations that add structure and foundation for further education to build on. This book is excellent!

4 out of 5 stars A gift from the heart for the heart.......2000-03-27

I gave this book to a friend who had a stroke a while ago.

Understandably, he's read lots of books on heart disease and the lot. I was, therefore, pleasantly surprised that he found the book very useful. He went on and on about it, so much so that I decided to get a copy for myself and have a read.

This book goes beyond the usual books on how to eat healthy, exercise, etc. It's actually a neat compendium of facts that I would normally not bother to read from books on nutrition, fitness, anatomy, etc.

To crown all, I found the illustrations very useful and easy to follow.

Oh, why did I give this book 4 stars and not 5? Because it does not include a free health check-up at the Mayo Clinic!

4 out of 5 stars Intro to Cardiovascular Disease (CVD).......2000-03-27

Well organized book from some of the best specialists in the world. This book is good for the beginner (esp. those with loved ones recently diagnosed with CVD) to understand the basic mechanisms and treatment of heart disease. This book is a must have as more than 40% of people in the US have some form of CVD.

Praise for Brasserie T and American Brasserie "Finally, a great modern American cookbook full of accessible recipes for classic dishes with big, bold, bodacious flavors." —Mark Miller, author of Tamales "For many, many years we've enjoyed the great restaurants of France—the brasseries. Now we not only have the brasserie experience on our shores at Brasserie T, we have the book, American Brasserie, to bring these flavors home in. Vive la Rick and Gale! —Norman Van Aken, Chef-Owner, Norman's, Miami "There is a tendency to assume that cutting-edge chefs are incapable of simplicity. The food at Brasserie T shatters that illusion; Tramonto and Gand's food couldn't be more accessible, and yet the dishes manage to dazzle at the same time… This is hearty, rustic eating at its finest." —Chicago Tribune "Brasserie T…is one of the top new restaurants in the country." —Bon Appetit "Gale Gand is considered to be one of the best pastry chefs working today, and she deserves ever accolade she gets. She makes desserts so good you won't believe your mouth or your eyes." —Chicago Sun-Times "Tramonto and Gand put together meals of imaginative diversity." —Food & Wine Visit us online at http://www.mcp.com/mgr/cooking

5 out of 5 stars The way we really want to cook........2004-05-23

Casual home style cooking of the great cusines for the American cook! Insipired by the other great casual French dining style and reinforced by Italy and even America. Ideas come flooding to me every time I open the book.

2 out of 5 stars Uh Oh, Now For The Other Side.......2003-05-08

First, let me explain that I absolutely adore Gale Gand's show Sweet Dreams and I love her Butter, Sugar, Flour, Eggs cookbook. I've made a lot of her recipes and they always come out great. But, this book has too many ingredients that are hard to find, unusual, time-consuming, (you get the picture). Also, it doesn't help matters that our home is totally alcohol-free. I consistently read & collect cookbooks and I felt I needed to cast an opinion to keep the reviews "fair and balanced."

                  5 out of 5 stars Robust,Rustic Food For Beer/Wine/?.......2002-12-05

I've for long time been a fan of Gale's, but only recently discovered her partner, Rick through his amazing new book, "Amuse-Bouche."

So wanted to check out more of his culinary wizardry, and found it to be of same high, creative quality.

This is quite a collection of hearty, flavorful food, meant to stand up to beer brewery atmosphere. Yet it is all very stylistic and well prepared.

To date few dishes prepared are winners, e.g. Roasted Vegetable-White Bean Chili; Grilled Portobello Mushrooms with Polenta Cakes, Mesclun, and Balsamic Sauce; Roquefort and Pear Salad with Grapes and Spiced Pecans; Provencal Lamb Shanks with Roasted Vegetables, Roasted Garlic, and Tapenade.

This is fun food to serve during winter and those fire in the hearth nights when a hearty meal and drink hits the spot.

Just an unusual, well-done, useful work from cover to cover. Don't forget the great desserts by Gale!

5 out of 5 stars I've used it so much I need to buy a new copy.......2001-11-05

I have gotten so many great meals out of this book. I recommend it completely without reservation.

Some of my favorites include the lamb ragu, the pear salad, and sweet ptotato- apple puree.

I have used it some much t he binding has broken and I need a new copy.

The only other books that come close in use are the Hugh Carpenter books.

5 out of 5 stars So good I had to buy it.......2001-06-11

A lucid text, edible photos, and luscious recipes make this a keeper. In fact, I borrowed it first from the library and hated to give it back so I bought my own copy!

Several of Gale Gand and Rick Tramonto's recipes earned me rave reviews from friends and coworkers. Do you want people to think you're a culinary star? Try this book. You can't miss. And if you don't think you can cook, try this book anyway. The pictures will hook you. The directions in the recipes are very clear.

Take, for instance the Pear and Roquefort Salad with Grapes and Spiced Pecans. There's a picture in the book, one of those edible pictures. You buy a few simple ingredients and there you are! How hard can it be to wash a few grapes? Or slice a couple pears? Or to crumble some cheese? Or - and this is the really good part - to throw a few things in a blender to come up with the Apple Vinaigrette dressing that goes on the salad? If you want to know the really hard part about this recipe, it's the spiced pecans. They are so good I kept eating them before the salad was finished. I think I'll bring them as a gift the next time I visit someone. Ya gotta try `em.

And if that's not enough, try the Roasted Fruits with Cinnamon-Red Wine Glaze and Toasted Almonds. It's a cinch (as it ought to be since it graduated from a pretty hot restaurant!). If you were short on friends, your problems are over. Okay, you get the idea.

This book will not just sit on my shelf. I expect it will regularly hop off your shelf, too.
