        Book Description

        Melanie Klein devoted her life to the study and treatment of children. She saw babies as capable of powerful emotions of love and hatred from the very beginning, and traced some of the links between the relationships of earliest infancy and adult ways of relating to others through eating, sexuality and speech. Her insights have influenced child-care practices and teaching for the last sixty years and her work, also influential in feminist theory, has led to a better understanding of psychotic processes and the part they play in "normal" behavior. Segal takes up the often controversial implications of Klein's work for counselors and psychotherapists today and traces her influence on therapists the world over. "The book is very intimate; the first chapter on her personal and professional life is extremely candid and enlightening. Though Klein later advised against doing this, she analyzed her own children. Her disagreements with Anna Freud are highlighted. Succeeding chapters on her major theoretical and practical contributions, and on the criticisms of her ideas and the rebuttals made by her and others, are interesting. . . . Will be enjoyed most by pre-professional students and psychoanalytically oriented theoreticians and practitioners." --Choice "This is a sympathetic and readable account of Melanie Klein and her work. Klein's theories are considered by many to be particularly impenetrable, yet Julia Segal gives a clear analysis of the major themes. Certainly her short exposition of countertransference processes was one of the most comprehensible I have come across. . . . Segal gives in this short book an overview of Klein's place and influence . . . as well as excellent definitions of the major Kleinian concepts." --Counselling "It is lively, readable, and comprehensively researched. As an introduction to the influence of a truly original mind on the psycho-analytic understanding of psychic development in young children, and how unconscious Phantasy, schizoid defenses and paranoid anxieties are implicated in adult psychopatholog, this book can be thoroughly recommended. Julia Segal has taken pains to eliminate all unecessary technical language and to relate Klein's concepts to every day experiences in a refreshingly ordinary way. The text is well presented with many sub-headings dividing it into digestible 'bites' which should help the student grapple with concepts such as projective identification, symbol formation, envy, and reparation. Technical and practical issues in psychotherapy and counselling are treated well, with a clear rational for the Kleinian approach." --International Review of Psychiatry

        This volume offers much more than its title suggests. It's a great way into Melanie Klein's thought for those who haven't read her; and for those who have, it's an invaluable help for following the thread of her ideas as they developed and changed. The main entries are extremely useful as free-standing essays on the development and implications of Klein's principal concepts. Klein was an exciting analytic theorist, and this book brings readers directly into the current of her thought. I only wish it were in paperback.

          4 out of 5 stars Good enough for an introduction.......2001-06-08

          I was disappointed by Klein but not this collection. Her conceptual apparatus seems rather underdeveloped for the complex phenomena to be taken under it. It is still worth a read and may be source of inspiration. So I dont think I will read Klein further, but this collection gave me quite sufficient understanding of her thought and that for a good price. The only deficiency is the lacking of a more in depth discussion of the death instict and why Klein introduces it. I assume it can be found in the latter of her collected writings. I strongly recommend the collection since it has not much alternative...

          5 out of 5 stars A SUPERB COLLECTION.......2000-07-04

          Since buying the complete Collected Works of Melanie Klein would be rather expensive (and not as readily available as this book), this is the next best thing. This one offers all of the very essential Kleinian works, including the Early Stages of the Oedipus Conflict (in which she very daringly challenges Freud's views on the topic, and two papers on manic-depression, which are classics and have still not been equaled even to this day. This book is a great choice for anyone interested in psychology, regardless of their orientation or affiliation.

          The book itself represents a valuable compilation of some of Klein's seminal ideas; however, I found myself angered by her irresponsible and intellectually dishonest use of her own children as supposed case examples. I also regard the death drive concept shared by her and Freud as the ether of depth-psychological thought.

            Book Description

            The original concepts of Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion have had a profound and continuing effect on the practice of psychoanalysis. The aim of this book is to present some of their most basic ideas as simply as possible to the reader and to show, by clinical example, these ideas at work in contemporary analysis. Individual analysts contribute chapters on child analysis, the concept of unconscious phantasy, projective identification, the paranoid-schizoid and depressive positions, psychotic thinking, the relation between the container and contained, and the idea of reversible perspective in understanding `as if' personalities. br br

              How do Kleinians work with projective identification?

              The concept of projective identification, first introduced by Melanie Klein in 1946, has been widely studied by psychoanalysts of different persuasions. However, these explorations have neglected to show what Kleinians actually do with the projective identification phenomenon in their daily casework.

              Projective Identification in the Clinical Setting presents a detailed study of Kleinian literature, setting a background of understanding for the day-to-day analytic atmosphere in which projective identification takes place. Extensive clinical material illustrates issues clearly identified for clinical practice, including:

              · the ways projective identification occurs within various psychological constellations;
              · the role of the analyst in countertransference experiences;
              · work with difficult patients who experience life within a paranoid or psychotic framework;
              · the role of projective identification in pathological greed.

              This comprehensive account of Kleinian literature on projective identification and wealth of clinical material provide a powerful and clear account of clinical practice around projective identification that all practitioners, psychoanalytic psychotherapists and trainees will benefit from reading.

                    Book Description

                    Teaching your toddler that “no means no” now can save you both suffering. But how do you say it so that he’ll understand?

                    For many parents of toddlers, saying “no” over and over becomes a mantra for exhaustion. Why is it so difficult to convey the meaning of this tiny word? Because, says pediatrician Will Wilkoff, when it comes to tots, actions speak louder than words.

                    Using very direct and simple guidelines, Dr. Wilkoff shows you how to develop a consistent and effective discipline plan. He explains what can go wrong with time-out and how to overcome obstacles, including your child’s rebelliousness, physical space issues, and your own reluctance. He also presents helpful advice for special situations, such as how to say no at meal times, at grandma’s house, and when your child is sick.

                    Presenting his compassionate and practical approach, Dr. Wilkoff shows how you can respond to the misbehavior of very young children while teaching them self-control that will benefit them throughout their lives. How to Say No to Your Toddler is the ideal guide for any parent who wants to take a more effective approach for raising healthy, happy children.

                    I couldn't finish reading this book fast enough. I read it in 2 days..I found this book to be very helpful for my situations with my 2 year old son.

                    2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in this book--too rigid for younger toddlers.......2004-01-28

                    The book outlines a program of setting limits, setting consequences, and following through with them in order to shape your toddler's behavior. The author says that safety is the main concern, and that parents should pick what behaviors they want to change instead of over-restricting their behavior. You can't make them perfectly behaved, they're toddlers! So he asks parents to make a top ten list of specific behaviors they want to change. Like, refuses to take a nap, always plays with the vcr, runs out in the street, etc. I liked this part because it helped me see that my 13 month old isn't badly behaved ALL the time, he just does some things that drive me nuts.

                    So far, so good. He says that when the toddler does the activity you want to change, redirection should always be the first thing you try. If redirection works, great. But on most toddlers, it doesn't work most of the time. He says you have to tell them "no, we don't play with cords" and the reason why, but not to try to over-reason with them. But the only consequence he really outlines in the book is time-out, preferably in the child's room with the door closed (and latched if necessary). He says 1 minute of time out for every year of age. And the time out doesn't start until the child is quiet (or not screaming at least). This is where I have a problem with the book--it says it is for 9 months-3 years but there is no way you can give a 9 month old a time out!! That is just cruel. I don't think they really work with kids under 2, maybe some 18-24 month olds, depending on the child. But under 18 months, forget it!

                    He spends a lot of time talking about why misbehavior occurs and says it is usually because kids are overtied. Duh!!! He offers a rather simplistic (and ferber-ized) solution to solving sleep problems, and doesn't really take into account nursing toddlers or co-sleeping and is pretty dismissive of attachment parenting.

                    The reasoning behind this book is sound I think, but it is too rigid for most people to use especially with younger toddlers. 2-3 year olds with verbal capacity, maybe.

                    I bought this book hoping it would offer a more structured approach to discipline than some of the gentle discipline techniques that aren't working, especially redirection. But I don't see how time outs would help with my "velcro toddler." He suggests "convenience" time outs for the velcro toddler--four minutes in the child's room while you make a phone call, but how would he understand why he is in his room? How would a time out help with his fighting diaper changes? I don't see how letting him sit in his room in a dirty diaper for a minute would solve anything. He doesn't advocate spanking or swatting, but I was really looking for something in between redirection and harsh time outs for younger toddlers.

                    They come fresh or dry, in yellow or purple, from California and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. They are in restaurants, supermarkets, fruit stands, backyards, and inside some very famous cookies. What are they? They're figs -- one of America's favorite fruits.

                    From Mission and Kadota figs to Adriatic and Calimyrna varieties, award-winning cookbook author Marie Simmons leaves no fig or fig leaf unturned in this extraordinary book about this most extraordinary fruit: Fig Heaven.

                    Figs are harvested in late summer and early fall, but, fortunately for us, they are easily dried and packaged, so they're available all year long. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, plump, fragrant figs are guilt-free indulgences that can be enjoyed in countless ways.

                    Fig Heaven is an inviting, comprehensive cookbook offering 70 recipes for both fresh and dried figs. They range from appetizers, salads, and sandwiches to entrées and desserts.

                    On the savory side, you'll find Open-Faced Dried Fig and Melted Blue Cheese Sandwiches; Fettuccine with Fresh Figs, Lemon, and Rosemary; and Lamb Pilaf with Artichokes and Dried Figs. If your sweet tooth needs some real satisfaction, there's a Fresh Fig and Peach Crumble, Dried Fig and Walnut Biscotti, and Molten Chocolate Roasted Figs with Vanilla Custard Sauce.
