Heck of a Book.......2002-12-26
Finding books about the first Bush Presidency is not that easy so when I came upon this one I gave it a shot. I knew that the author is a conservative columnist so I was expecting a rather right leaning account, but I was wrong. Either Bush put the authors wife in jail, took away his kids or killed his dog because the level of dislike he has from all things Bush is really something. Reading this book was like watching a boxing match were one guy just keeps getting hit, the author kept the zingers coming from everything from domestic policy issues to haircuts.
The book is not a all encompassing overview of the Bush years. It is an interesting and well written account of an inside the administration view from that second or third tear seats. The author found smart and funny comments on all topics and never were there dull spots in the book. Overall the book is great, my only complaint was that it was not longer.
Still one of the best books about Bush-41.......2002-10-08
"Hell of a Ride" may not, from the standpoint of history, be the equivalent of Henry Kissinger's memoirs. But it's still, for my money, one of the most useful, insightful, and entertaining looks at the political and psychological makeup of the Bush (41) White House.
Podhoretz is especially good on the tensions between the true-blue Reaganite holdovers and the "moderate," "pragmatic" Bushies -- tensions that not only tore at the Bush presidency but at the GOP as a whole. 41 himself emerges as a man who was, if anything, too nice a guy for the presidency. His insistence, post-election, that OEOB staffers take down a large sign declaring (prophetically?) "We'll be back!" so as not to display "poor sportsmanship" is a fascinating contrast, viewed a decade later, with the GAO's evidence of vandalism carried out by departing Clinton staffers.
Podhoretz writes with flair, energy, and a good eye for both politics and comedy. Go ahead and read Baker and Scowcroft for the nitty-gritty. Podhoretz has the atmosphere.
Podhoretz Jr. a chip off the old block.......2001-10-30
His old man, Norman Podhoretz, is nothing but an intellectual thug, and his son has not strayed far from the trunk of this polluted tree. I would shun all Podhoretzes -- including the mom, Midge Decter. Perhaps we can send them back to Galicia.
Behind the Scenes at the Bush White House.......2000-07-10
John Podhoretz has written a good account of the Bush White House, from his perspectifve as a junior level staffer. An entertaining look at the decline and fall of a one-term President.
Culture wars.......1999-12-09
This was supposed to be an insider's view of the Bush administration. But the only way the author could get near the White House was with a visitor's pass. So we get second-hand bile passed off as the real deal.

Bits and Snippits.......2000-04-12
Consists primarily of bits and snippits from Victorian American etiquette manuals. Some insights into high society life and how it changed through the course of the 19th century can be drawn, keeping in mind these were the suggested forms of behavior not necessarily what was actually done. There is plenty to read between the lines. Some sheet music in included along with some dance steps. There are also recipes for makeup and concoctions for cleaning. Fashion descriptions are fairly superficial, but adequate. Over all, I'm glad I bought it.
A Superb ettiquitte manual.......2000-03-24
This book does indeed give the reeder a close look at the society and ettiquitte of this period. Since I was researching the Regency when I purchased it I was a little disapointed to find that it's focus is primarily the latter part of the nineteenth century (1830-1890), and is based primarily on American publications of ettiquitte manuals. I was delighted to discover a wealth of information about everything from dance steps to party preperation to elaborate flirting rituals that can be caried out with parasols and gloves. It certainly says everything Emily Post might have at that time as well as providing a vivid picture of society in a bygone era. A must have for anyone enamored of the Victorian era and usefull still though slightly less relavent for Regency fanatics.
Product Description
"Dancing and etiquette are inseparable," wrote one 19th-century dancing master quoted in this scholarly glimpse into ballrooms past. Newly moneyed Americans of that era craved guidance on how to comport themselves, and publishers responded with scores of manuals on etiquette, fashion, and dance instruction. As dance historian Aldrich demonstrates through more than 100 excerpts from these guides, balls and dance offer a key to understanding the social aspirations of the period. These volumes gave unflinching advice, from injunctions against nose-picking to the proper way to lead a partner through the quadrilles. In a brief historical essay, Aldrich dissolves the veneer of naivete from these admonitions, placing them in the context of a society in which woman's role had become centered on domestic affairs and in which the ballroom was the showcase for one's social accomplishments. Book Description
In this deeply affecting memoir, Arthur W. Frank explores the events of illness from within: the transformation from person to patient, the pain, the wonder, and the ceremony of recovery. To illuminate what illness can teach us about life, Frank draws upon his own encounters with serious illness -- a heart attack at age thirty-nine and, a year later, a diagnosis of cancer. In poignant and clear prose, he offers brilliant insights into what happens when our bodies and emotions are pushed to extremes. Ultimately, he examines what it means to be human.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book On Illness.......2007-02-23
For anyone who is ill or anyone who is accompanying someone else on this journey, this book is invaluable. Richly illuminating and enlightening about what it means to be facing a life threatening illness. It is enormously helpful and reassuring to read of someone facing this head on without the current and dismissive "just have a positive attitude". it is engrossing and a life changing book. I cannot recommend highly enough.
A scholars pilgrimage with illness.......2007-01-04
Arthur W. Frank's book, At the Will of the Body: Reflections on Illness, is a pilgrimage through the author's struggle with a heart attack and cancer. His experiences, insights, treatments, along with his wife's support are by no means examples of the average person's struggle with illnesses. Frank, a college professor, comes across as a self-centered elitest and as a patient who was critical of his health care. Upon reflection, I am amazed by his wife's dedication to him as he progressed through his illnesses, especially cancer.
Education and Hope.......2006-06-29
I have helped train family practice physicians and I have used the play "W;T" to try and sensitize young physicians to the viewpoint of the patient. I was asked to read this book for a graduate course in spirituality and healing called: Suffering and Hope. I found it even better than "W;T" for training purposes. I think it should be required reading for all medical students and residents. Physicians are much more than just technicians trained to "fix" bodies. The viewpoint of the author was most helpful in suggesting ways to approach a very difficult situation. I have ordered copies for friends who are suffering from cancer that it may help them on their journey!
Awesome.......2000-04-22
This was one of the best books I have read in the course of my dissertation work. I'd say it is a must read for anyone in the health care profession, as well as patients battling chronic symptoms. The book is a reminder that we need to remember the PERSON who is the patient.
He gave me the courage to risk hangin in there for others.........1997-03-04
Arthur Frank doesn't deny any aspect of his experience, and through his demonstration of bare-bones honesty and self acceptance, I connected with myself, which is where the answers, if there are any, are to be found.
I saw my own fear of cancer patients played out on these pages, and I recalled with anguish the number of times I disappeared from the lives of people I cared about because I was so afraid of their disease, their pain and the possibility that they'd die.
...and I also saw the ways in which I've protected myself from my own fear of cancer by wondering what it was in their psyches that caused them to be stricken by this terrible disease.
... and I saw how frightened I've been to be present in my own body. His honesty gave me the courage to change, and I'm incredibly grateful.

The Everything Fondue Cookbook.......2007-01-19
Gave it to my mom for the holidays. She made a few of the recipes contained within it. A cheese fondue: a little too salty. A Hot oil and various sauces: 1. peanut=pretty good. 2. some kind of garlic dip=very good. 3. A wasabi soy sauce sauce=amazing. Also made a chocolate Kahlua dessert fondue=Quite delicious, especially with the pound cake she made to dip in it.
Lots of recipes, so if you come across one that's sub-par there are plenty of others that are great.
I'd recommend it.
Great gift.......2006-12-18
I purchased this for a friend who just got a new fondue pot, but didnt know what to do with it. She tells me that the instructions are clear and theres lots of new and different ideas to try.

Nice book, down to earth.......2005-12-28
I just received this book after wanting it for a couple of years. The recipes appear to be fairly refreshing and not to much of what I would call "frou-frou" type of recipes. I like the salad suggestions as well.
Pretty Good.......1999-12-28
This book contains some good ideas for different kinds of fondue. The only thing that is lacking are fondue recipes in which the food does not cook in oil. I have a few recipes of my own in which the meat is cooked in broth and was looking forward to finding out more.

More than 50 incredible recipes feature cheese, vegetable, meat, and sinfully sweet variations. Be a traditionalist with Neuchatel fondue, made with Emmental and Gruyere cheeses: bread is the dipper of choice here. Chop up a nice mix of fresh spring vegetables--button mushrooms, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots--and dunk them into a special batter of flour, oil, and egg whites; tomato relish on the side provides the perfect finishing touch. Or, try a tempura, seafood, and white wine fondue: Mongolian lamb hot pot; and even one with melted ice cream! The choices are endless.and will have you reaching for your fondue pot night after night.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly good...........2003-10-07
A friend of mine bought me a fondue pot as a gift so I set out in search of a good fondue cookbook. When I found this book I was thrilled - cheese appetizers, entire meals cooked in oil or stock type fondue pots, and marvelous chocolate desserts!! As I started trying the recipies I found several of the ingrediants diffictult to find in my small town grocery store, but having lived in cities I am sure the ingrediant list would have been easier to fill were I still there. The beginning of the book is full of helpful tips and advice but sometimes I found the recipies to be less specific that I wanted. Not every recipe is pictured, but those that are look much better than how mine turned out. I will say though, everything I've tried, even with some substitutions, has been good. The dessert section is the best and there are some great recipies for banana fondue, ice cream fondue and some other tasty treats I didn't see elsewhere. Being new to fondue I went back to find a simpler book but I am growing into this one. If you're looking to really dazzle your company and understand fondue this is a great resource!! If you're just learning - come back to this book, it will be more enjoyable once you've tried some simpler recipies.

Not the best choice.......2006-08-06
The recipes are complicated and not a good fit for fondue parties nor family friendly. High calorie too...
Can't wait to have a fondue party now!.......2001-12-28
Last year a friend bought me a fondue set. Finally got the cookbook this year and was pleased to find the recipes fairly simple. This book offers various fondue recipes from cheese, chocolate, to Asian fondues with meat, etc. It explains each and different ways to fondue very well. I suggest this to anyone beginning their journey into using their fondue set!
Very diverse cookbook..............2001-07-22
....A friend bought me a fondue set for my anniversary, so I picked up this cookbook expecting the usual cheese and chocolate fondues. Well, not only did I get great typical fondue recipes, this book contains varieties of fondue that are completely new to me!! There are "bacchus" fondues in which meats are first marinated in a variety of alcoholic beverages, "Asian" fondues which are great so far, and "burgundian" fondues. Overall a very good, very intriguing cookbook!!

TYPICAL FIRST CLASS BOOK FROM LE CREUSET!.......2006-05-24
Fantastic photography coupled with scrumptious recipes - can't fault this book from the brilliant 'Le Creuset'!
'Fondue Bourguignonne' - the traditional meat fondue or how about 'Seafood and Vegetable Tempura with Red Pepper Sauce with Chilli - Wow!
Finish with 'Orchard Fruit Fondue with Cinnamon Cream' or .....the absolutely excellent 'Bitter Chocolate and Orange Fondue'(the optional cointreau makes this a very 'adulty' indulgence!)
As with all 'Le Creuset' cookery books, the recipes are clear and extremely easy to follow. This book has over 100.
Good excuse to buy a fondue if you don't have one already!
And if you do buy this book- you MUST have 'LE CREUSET'S FRENCH COUNTRY KITCHEN' to go with it on your kitchen bookshelf!
Be the envy of your friends with the matching covers(hardback eds.) - 'Bookmark AMAZON for LE CREUSET Books' - they creep on and don't hang around long!
