Goodbye,Vietnam is a great student summer read!.......2005-08-18
My child had to read this book for a summer reading requirement. Naturally, I read the book to be sure he would do a good job. I encourage anyone to read this book, as it has a great story line. The author has the ability to take the reader into the story and keep the reader captivated. I found that in the middle of the book I could not put it down, as I was enthralled on finding out what would take place next. The author has done the research behind the culture of the characters, and has managed to voice the humor to reflect.
Goodbye,Vietnam.......2001-09-28
Goodbye Vietnam would be a good book for children or adults interested in history.I for instance am interested in books about history i rated this book with only 3 stars because i feel they dont talk enough about what is important in this book. With this book things need to be explained more about what is happening.
Wonderful!.......2001-06-13
I first got interested in Vietnam at the age of 7. My eldest sister's husband was born in Vietnam. From everything he and his family has told me about it, it is 110% acurrate. It is very special to me because of my brother-in-laws life there. HE escaped Vietnam, and it is true how they live on platforms. Anyway, it's an awesome book. It is amongst the best books I've ever read.
GREAT BOOK.......2000-04-28
My friends were reading this book and they said it was good so I triend it and it is one of my favorite books now. This book is a story about a girl and how she escapes with her family to Hong Kong and then on to America. Its a have to read!
For young readers........1999-05-18
I believe that this book is good for children because it explains things like sacrifice, suffering, and courage clearly. If a child reads this book, he or she will be interested because the principal character (a 13 years old) is telling the story. So, young readers can feel good witn this book, and also they learn about the true meaning of life. Finally, I would recomended that all children read this fantastic story.

Outstanding expose of a goverment (ours!) selling out our fighting men to the commies!.......2006-07-21
Mr and Mrs Stevenson have been on hundreds
of radio and TV shows and this very solidly
refferenced book should be on the same shelf
in your library as Col. James Bo Gritz books,
on the same subject [Ex: 'A Nation Betrayed'].
Bravo, Mr and Mrs Stevenson!
An amazing and sad tale.......2006-06-02
I read this book quite a few years ago and was horrified by the thought that American soldiers were left to die in Vietnam. Whenever I discussed the findings in the book with friends they would shrug it off and say that it couldn't be true. They felt that the truth would have had to come out over the years and that even politicians are not that low. Many other reviews on this site also portray the book as false.
I was therefore amazed when I recently read the book Inside the Delta Force by Eric Haney. In that amazing book he discusses that the U.S. government had confirmation of U.S. POW's being held in Laos and that the Delta Force was prepared to go in after them. Two times the mission was scrubbed, and they never again had the opportunity to try again. His views on what occurred and the C.I.A.'s participation in the events are amazing. These facts are hard to dismiss lightly coming from a founding member of the Delta Force.
I now want to go back and read Kiss the Boy's Goodbye again. It is an amazing tale that needs to be told and people need to be held accountable.
Kiss the boys goodbye.......2005-07-03
This tells to whole story...how could we as civilized people forget some of the bravest men Amarica has produced?? I was in the Army, 67-70 and I am totally ashamed to be an American...she tells to facts, and you can decide how it effects you.
Awesome-.......2004-10-31
What an outstanding book, truth always is better than the lies told by our Government having retired from the Government and knowing the inside facts of the fate of our POW/MIA's I testified UNDER OATH at the Senate POW/MIA hearing's and know first hand the truth this is a book for all to read it is History of how our elected "Cowards" run in the face of the enemy. five stars +++++ Truth is better than cover up
total and absolute nonsense.......2004-06-02
This book is useless. Anyone who thinks this book contains a word of truth needs to spend a lot of time reading the MIA Facts website at http://www.miafacts.org -- especially the part about Monika Jensen's other POW book, "Spite House."

Product Description
This collection of fictional remembrances of a Marine during the Vietnam conflict is told in a series of short pieces that describe the particular horrors of this war through one man's eyes. From "The Gift," a story about boot camp and his love-hate for the drill sergeant, to "Zelda Waiting," which finds him leaving Vietnam "packed in the back of a truck with all our paraphernalia and our travel brochures," these vignettes take the reader into the dark world of this war. The absurdity of this time is profiled in "Today's Spectators," in which an argument between two South Vietnamese factions plays out like a football game while the Americans eat peanuts and popcorn and watch a fighter plane strafe a convoy of trucks and tanks: "This is a movie. I knew it, I knew it all along." Reminiscent of Apocalypse Now in its treatment of meaninglessness and truthfulness, this book puts the reader square in the middle of a time and a place that even now remains controversial.

Better Than Non-Fiction Tales of Vietnam! .......2007-05-29
Sometimes the truth is best written in the form of fiction so that it can create the mood and emotional stage for the very soul of the storyteller. Such is the case for author Robert W. Wood, with his compilation of short stories in "Goodbye Vietnam". The book works very well in a strange and sometimes bizarre way to convey what it felt like to do a "tour of duty" in Vietnam during that war.
The format that Wood uses to define the Vietnam experience works perfectly in giving the reader an insider look. His use of short pieces that feel sort of like stories or chapters paint us a picture of the horror, the rage and the outright absurdity of this war. It is a brilliant use of loose fitting prose that when read altogether it makes the book feel like journey. The author has created a new path to telling "the emotional truth" by making it fictional.
You may have read many books on war and some on "The Vietnam War" but this is in a class all by itself. I have read and reviewed hundreds of books about Vietnam and many of those were non-fiction--but this one stands out as different, creative and entertaining and in some ways, enlightening, if that can be said about a book that deals with so many issues from killing to sex.
Put this on your gift list for books to buy veterans and even non-veterans. It is an easy book to read but a hard book to put down! I personally endorse this book!
Vividly evokes a fictional yet highly realistic memory.......2003-03-11
Wood is an impressively written novel that vividly evokes a fictional yet highly realistic memory of a Marine who served in combat in Vietnan. Offer the reader a compellingly dark, gritty, no-holds-barred view of a truly hellish war, and the toll it took on human life and decency, Goodbye Vietnam belongs on the shelf along side such seminal and memorable works at Joseph L. Heller's "Catch 22" and Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead".

"HEAD-SPINNING, HILARIOUS AND HAUNTING."
--Glamour
Anh, a brash, resourceful Vietnamese refugee with a tortured past, has survived the end of her homeland, and now hangs on by a thread working in a shady casino in Southern California. She's the only thing standing between her ungrateful family and starvation. By dint of her wits and her guts, she picks up real money selling her phenomenal luck to a drugged-out gambling lawyer.
Then, with the help of a legal secretary named Jana, she creates an unlicensed law practice that actually begins to help the Vietnamese immigrants of Little Saigon. But their booming business angers a notorious Vietnamese gang who want to keep the power and the money in their own pockets. Yet Anh isn't afraid of anyone. Alone or with Jana, she's willing to start her own private war, where she takes all weapons, no prisoners, and breathes life into the future from the ashes of the dead.
"EXUBERANT...Performs the miraculous by making us laugh even as we cry, and takes us a considerable step deeper into the experience of this most unusual group of new Americans."

CROSS CULTURAL FEMINIST HUSTLERS IN LITTLE SAIGON.......2004-11-20
I think that a little background is in order before I begin the body of this review. Nina Vida, the author of __LITTLE SAIGON__, was gradually accepted into this close knit, generally closed to outsiders, American Vietnamese community, after her husband had taken over a law practice in the "Little Saigon" area of Los Angeles. The men and women of this community shared many of their personal stories with her and it was the essence of these stories that gave her enough background to write this book.
The basic plot can be summed up in a few sentences:
Truong Anh survives and supports her unappreciative family, including parents, siblings, and nieces and nephews, by hustling in a local poker parlor. Her main source of income in the period leading up to the start of the novel is an American lawyer named Dennis, whom Anh helps at the Pai Gow table and in return earns very big tips.
Jana, an American born Anglo, is Dennis's secretary/paralegal, and supports herself and her son from her earnings at the one man la firm.
Dennis has two bad habits, he is a compulsive gambler, and is addicted to expensive, illegal drugs. His gambling addiction causes him to fritter away the better part of a million dollar settlement he received, and his adiction brings on a nearly fatal heart attack. These two things, in combination, cause both Anh and Jana to lose their source of income.
After about a month long search, Anh finds Jana, and after some misgivings, they team up to illegally keep Dennis's law firm going with Jana acting as an attorney, and Anh bringing in many, many Vietnamese clients.
Their firm is so popular that they come to the attention of a local gang who try to cut themselves into part of the profits, when this fails, they take revenge on Anh and Jana in a myriad of ways including the murder of one of Anh's brothers, and the destruction of their office and all their files.
Jana and Anh are left to find redemption and revenge in whatever ways they can.
Along the way, we are let into Anh's home, leading to some exposure to the home life and the all important superstitions of this immigrant society. In alternating sections, we see how Anh, at the age of 13 was sold by her father, into prostitution in Vietnam, and how she became stronger, not weaker as a result of this experience. Often she has saved her family from death and total ruin both in Vietnam and America, only to be told by her superstitious parents that she in an unlucky child and a "bad" daughter. She always responds to this rejection with a shrug, and continues to take cre of them.
This is a novel which does have it's weaknesses, as described in the editorial reviews, but which is strong in showing the ins and outs of family relations, dynamics in a closed community, and the emotional toughness, and sense of humor needed to cope with a very harsh world.
So, in spite of a few weaknesses, I think that __GOODBYE SAIGON__ is a book well worth reading for plot, at least one compelling protagonist (Anh), and vivid pictures of a culture.
Nina Vida delives.......2000-09-24
I was captivated by the content of this novel from page one. Nina Vida has most definately lived the story she tells. Having lived and worked in Saigon and furhter lived in the little Saigon area, I can understan Nina's description of life there today. For an easy and comical relief in your reading, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
In 1645 the Japanese samurai Musashi Miamoto wrote A Book of Five Rings, which described the attitudes necessary for individual success. Though he was a swordsman, his book was not limited to combat but addressed the much broader question of how to achieve excellence in life through study, discipline, and planning. It is still avidly read in Japan today.
Arthur Kornberg's book is a modern-day Book of Five Rings that replaces the medium of swordsmanship with that of biochemistry, particularly enzymology. As Kornberg describes his successive research problems, the challenges they presented, and the ultimate accomplishments that resulted, he provides us with a primer in the strategies needed to do scientific work of great significance. Moreover, these strategies are played out in the context of solving some of the great biochemical problems of the twentieth century.
The ability to manipulate and alter DNA fired a revolution that forever changed the nature of biology. Arthur Kornberg is a primary architect of that revolution, arguably one of the two or three most important biologists of this time. Prior to Kornberg, genetic information and later DNA were imbued by biologists with an almost vitalistic aura. Kornberg demonstrated that DNA is a molecule synthesized by enzymes, like all other chemical constituents of the cell. More important, he trained a school of scientists who focused on and discovered many of the enzymatic activities that act on DNA. It is these enzymes in particular that allow modern "genetic engineering."
For the Love of Enzymes does not describe a single lucky or hard-won accomplishment. Rather, it is the story of thirty years of decisive campaigns, nearly all of which led to insights of major significance. In relating his story, Kornberg never avoids the difficult question of "why": why he felt classical nutritional studies had reached a plateau, why he turned to enzymology as a discipline in which the important answers would be found, and why he believes the study of enzymes will grow ever more important as we face the new scientific frontier of brain function.
This book will challenge students of biology and chemistry at all levels who want to do important work rather than simply follow popular trends. It will also delight and inform readers who wish to understand how "real" science is done, and to learn of the values that guide one of our greatest researchers.
Customer Reviews:
nice book, but doesn't quite live up to the hipe.......2007-07-25
This is a nice, well-written scientific autobiography.
It has some quite entertaining anecdotes, some social message, and a lot biology from the forefront of enzyme-research that should not be forgotten.
It also has a couple of verbatim repetitions withing the book, which are a bit odd.
On the other hand, it has managed to convince me of something that I have already suspected - that purifying and studying enzymes must be one of the most boring lines of research on the face of this planet. Kronberg makes a very valiant effort trying to show the opposite, and it's obvious that he loves his research with passion, something that I truly admire.
I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of entering enzymology - I believe it will give them a reasonably realistic estimate on whether they will like the work or not (in my case the answer was no, but it's personal taste).
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book!.......2007-09-19
This book is great because it contains 2 books in one, The Mister Rogers Parenting Book & Mister Rogers' Playtime. I have found the advice to be excellent in the parenting section. My daughter and I very much enjoy picking an activity from the playtime section to do together. We love Mr. Rogers! Overall, it's a great book & I am glad to own it.
Excellent, Honest, Quick Reference.......2007-01-08
My husband and I use this book all the time to get some perspective on issues we are dealing with. It is gently written and simple to understand with some great ideas on what to try in different situations. I've actually had my husband call me up on the phone and ask me to look something up in this book for him. Highly reccommended!!!!!
I love Mr.Rogers!.......2005-12-11
This book is my favorite parenting book--it has the best advice in clear, simple terms and it's easy to find the information you need. Well worth the money!
Read it from the library, had to buy the book........2005-07-10
This is how I want my children to be raised. Mr. Rogers is more than a cultural icon, he's a man who has though long and hard about what it's like to be a little person in a big person's world. What a wonderful theory for guiding a youngster through life. I hope I can live up to Mr. Roger's model of how to behave as a parent and in life.
-Sarah
Profound Parenting.......2004-06-30
While, as a youth, I often panned Mister Rogers, as an adult, I find him inspiring. This book is filled with simple, practical information that can have a profound effect on the way you parent your children and the way you parent yourself.
Book Description
Master chef Giuliano Bugialli comes home to Stewart, Tabori & Chang with a completely revised and enlarged edition of his best-selling Bugialli on Pasta. A confirmed classic, the cookbook has sold more than 50,000 copies since its publication in 1988. Updated to cover all the changes the past decade has brought to our perception of pasta, the new Bugialli will demand its own place in the kitchens of cooks who appreciate authentic and inventive Italian cuisine.
In addition to its 190 classics, the new Bugialli on Pasta features 30 never-before-published recipes. From Sicily's Minestra di Pasta all'Aragosta (Lobster Soup with Pasta) to Bologna's Tagliatelle al Rag alla Bolognese (Tagliatelle with Bolognese Rag Meat Sauce), Bugialli offers traditional dishes that have been honed for centuries in all the regions of Italy. Penne Strascicate alla Lucchese tosses sausages, herbs, tomatoes, and cream with bite-sized tubes for a taste that typifies the hearty cuisine of its namesake city, Lucca. Pansoti o Pansooti alle Noci presents Genoa's triangular-shaped pockets, stuffed with ricotta, Parmesan, Swiss chard, and watercress, then garnished with walnuts.
For cooks intent on capturing the simple yet savory cuisine of Italy in their own saucepans, Bugialli on Pasta is essential. A chapter devoted to homemade ingredients will please the chef who wishes to make pasta dishes from scratch. A new design and 100 photographs taken specially for this edition on location in Italy further invigorate the revised edition. Infused with Bugialli's encouragement and extensive knowledge, this book just might inspire the reader to attempt all 220 recipes.
Customer Reviews:
I liked this book.......2007-05-29
I have this booka and I think it is very good. The pictures are nice and the recipes are easy to follow. I like Giuliano Bugialli books. Thius is no exception.
Beautiful and useful, but..........2001-10-23
Bugialli has produced a good cookbook that has many useful recipes and is decorated with some beautiful photos. However, the book falls short in two areas.
First, he refers to recipes in other cookbooks he's written. Without those recipes, some dishes can't be made. Fortunately there aren't many of these instances; but, each book should stand on its own and not require the reader to get several books to make one recipe.
Second, Bugialli doesn't give much advice on making the eggless pasta that traditionally is used for pesto. Because it is just a mixture of flour, water, and salt, this pasta must be handled a bit more carefully to avoid making glue. Ask me how I know that.
Fortunately, the book has some excellent recipes that go beyond the usual fare. The dishes with seafood and vegetables are particularly good. This makes the weaknesses described above tolerable.
The All Star Pasta Cookbook.......2000-11-01
If you want to buy one cookbook to learn all aspects of pasta making and preparation, this one would be my recommendation. Bugialli, an expert on Italian cuisine in general, shines on his own when it comes to pasta. As the Italian Food Host @ BellaOnline, I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have pulled this book off the shelf to use as a reference. If you love pasta, this book should be in your collection!
Purity and beauty.......2000-07-11
Bugialli is ever the purist in his pusuit of good, authentic and classic Italian recipes.
Many of these recipes occur in variations in other cookbooks, but Bugialli has done his research and work with regard to the recipes. The research was done in finding the purest and most traditional (and best) ways of preparing them. The work was done in adapting the recipes so they will succeed for N. American cooks.
There is incredible variety in the recipes! Pasta with all manner of vegetables and meat and cheese. There are even some tomato sauces. Many of the recipes are quite simple; some are quite complex.
Most recipes have a preface with notes on history, tradition, cooking tips, etc. There are illustrations demonstrating most of the important techniques. The recipes are organized by major ingredient (other than pasta, such as vegetables or cheese). There is also a section on notable regional pastas, though all the recipes that are in the other sections designate the region(s) of their origin.
Also, there are many beautiful, full-color photos of many of the recipes and of scenes in Italy. The paper is heavy and resilient (not many books use this fine grade of paper!).
I have been very pleased with the results so far. The Bucatini all' Amatriciana was possibly the simplest recipe I have encountered for it, yet it tasted the best: it is the recipe I will make from now on. There is a surprisingly good mushroom-meat sauce (complex, deep flavors). The marinara sauce is simple to make but very good. Etc. Etc.
One criticism I have is that the pictures of the techniques are not necessarily near the recipe(s) they pertain to. It is a minor annoyance to have to scour the book looking for the pictures (did I miss some reference to the page they were on?)
If you love pasta and wish to explore it through fine Italian recipes, this book would be my first choice. If you just want a really good starter book on pasta, this one fits the bill for that, too. This book is destined to become a classic on the subject.
