5 out of 5 stars Probably my favorite vietnam war narrative.......2006-05-11

This book is probably the best Vietnam War narrative I have read, and I have read quite a few. It really puts you in the middle of the action. It's not too gung-ho; just the experiences of an ordinary guy fighting in the jungle and living day to day.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular Read! A real account without the fluff.......2005-08-13

For fans of this genre, this book is a must have. It is written clearly with no dead time in action and intesity of this eye witness account. I rarely rate books but this one deserved my time and review as it acheives what few ever do. Bravo to Phil Ball! Rest in peace leatherneck. Michael Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Ghosts and Shadows by Phil Ball.......2001-08-23

This is one of the best Vietnam books I have read. It is so truthful. Written in a way that made you feel what they (the marines) and all our young men who served in that war must have gone through. Wonderfully written!! ON July 5th, Phil Ball died, he was a wonderfully gifted man. He will be missed for all he was and all he could have been.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Memoir.......2000-11-22

Over the past 13 years i have read well over 100 books on ww2 and vietnam, the majority of which were memoirs written by those who were there. Ghosts and Shadows is, one of my favorites. Although a basic description of it would make it sound like one of many books written by vietnam veterans, young man goes off to war then writes about his experiences, Phils book manages to cut several layers deeper than your average in describing the emotional and physical effects combat has on a person. I rank it up there with my other favs like Chickenhawk, Rumor of War, Suicide Charlie and Father,Soldier,Son. A couple chapters are about phil and his platoon defending a hilltop position against a vc night attack and in my opinion its one the best descriptions ive ever read about one of an authors single combat experiences. I highly recomend it and i really feel you will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting.......1999-04-24

This book was written about heroes by a hero. It's a page burner, there is no time to put it down once you start reading.

      Book Description

A self-empowering plan for anyone who wants to stop being manipulated by others

In Who's Pulling Your Strings?, Dr. Harriet B. Braiker,New York Times bestselling author of The Disease to Please, explains how depression, low self-esteem, chronic anger, and feelings of helplessness are often the result of being caught in relationships with manipulative people--including family members, friends, coworkers, and associates. More importantly, she arms readers with the knowledge and tools they need to understand and identify manipulative personalities and to free themselves from the bondage of relationships with them.

Working from sound psychological theory and research, yet writing in a warm, accessible style, Braiker exposes the most common methods manipulative people use to control others--and makes clear that it takes at least two people to enable such a relationship to function. With the help of valuable self-assessment quizzes, action plans, and how-to exercises she empowers readers to:

...and much more, including informative case studies and highly effective Resistance Tactics to help those who identify themselves as victim-participants end the damaging cycle of control and manipulation--and clear the way for success and happiness.

Orlando Sentinel, “She devotes her book to explaining how manipulators operate and, more important, what their victims can do to end these destructive relationships.” --Harry Wessel

Chicago Tribune, “…offers practical suggestions for those who find themselves repeatedly yanked, right down to language they can use in a tight spot.” --Joanne Trestrail

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly eye-opening and helpful in our ongoing drama........2007-09-17

In going through his divorce, my fiance and I have been harassed, stalked, guilted and manipulated repeatedly by his soon to be ex. I read the book and we discussed many topics and took several quizzes the book has included. My fiance was surprised at how right on the book was on how he has been repeatedly harassed for years by his ex.
Recently, we thought she was focusing her attentions finally elsewhere, until we logged on amazon and since the email and passwords were the same from a long time ago, she had logged on and in our browsing history were recent views of books on saving the marriage on "your own" and others. Unbelievable!
These book talks about what a manipulators true 'motives' are (you basically are dealing with someone who wants you to do something or wants you to stop doing something). I especially felt we benefited from a step discussing setting terms, and defining why extraction from a relationship might be your best and healthiest goal.
Its okay though! She told him recently "I've got the goods on you" Little does she know, the POLICE and authorities in the fields on stalking have the "goods on her". Sigh. Read this book! If you have a manipulative ex, parent, spouse, child, it will help you learn to toughen up and learn to change how you respond to people like this. They don't change, but you can.

      5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended.......2007-04-19

Although I purchased this book in order to better cope with the inevitable interactions with my daughter's father, I discovered much more. Those little problems I was having at work...I was convinced that my high stress levels (with said ex) where causing me to forget things become easily confused & constantly find myself with too much work to do.
She was a stealth manipulator hiding behind a sweet, pious facade. I brought some of these indications to my boss's attention & we instantly realized that we, both were her victims!!
To be able to spot 'em a mile away: An invaluable skill.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Insight!.......2004-07-29

This book is a must read if you've been in any sort of manipulative relationship weather it be romantic, friendships, or family related. Not only are the hints helpful in recognizing WHEN you're being manipulated, but it provides the tools necessary to combat manipulative situations. Every aspect of this book applied in my life somewhere and in multiple areas such as work, home, love, family, and friends. A MUST read for everyone as we've all been prey to manipulators at one time or another.

On an alternate note, there are also scenarios in this book that might make you think of a time or times that you have manipulated others. It's helpful to have these pointed out and be conscious of your own manipulative tactics even if you weren't aware of them previously.

5 out of 5 stars waking up to manipulative relationships.......2004-03-01

Dr.Braiker made understanding "manipulation" easy. Kudos to a book well written. Searching for books to learn what manipulation IS is hard to come by. Sometimes in our fast paced world we are so caught up that the art of manipulation can cause denial even to "seemingly" intellegent people. My work environnment was so covertly manipulated by its owner that I preferred to look the other way, due to building a company, rather than force myself into realizing how detrimental my environnment was. Peoples live have been ruined. Whether your in a bad relationship on a personal or professional level Dr. Braiker will defintely help you understand, and ultimately help you gain Your-Self back.

Marty Nachel immediately dispels two long-held myths in Homebrewing for Dummies: brewing your own beer isn't all that difficult, and despite all that you may have heard or assumed, facial hair is not a prerequisite to being a good homebrewer.

Like all other books in the popular Dummies series, Homebrewing for Dummies is a clear, concise, how-to guide for the do-it-yourselfer. As it turns out, making beer isn't hard to do if you have a stove, some basic equipment, and a little time on your hands. Here's your chance to make your own Hefeweizen or India Pale Ale and avoid another trip to the local microbrewery; Nachel provides the recipes and solid step-by-step instructions. And if making beer isn't enough, the chapter on evaluation will teach even the most pedestrian beer drinker to critically analyze homebrews like a pro.

Nachel is well qualified. The former welder is an award-winning brewer and one of the top beer writers in the country. Homebrewing for Dummies covers the gamut--from simple lagers to Belgian Dubbels--and Nachel shows that you don't need a team of Clydesdales or a Colorado mountain spring to make great beer at home.

Great book to get you started brewing beer. It is a simple how-to book, and I think it is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Decent Starter book.......2007-02-08

This is a well laid out book, very easy to follow, chock full of information. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it was not as technical as some of the other "for dummies" books. I would recommend this book for anyone who is new to homebrewing and would like a basic idea of how the process works. If you really want a technical book get "how to brew" by John Palmer. That is a 5 star book.

4 out of 5 stars Good beginner book.......2006-10-19

This was one of my first homebrew books. I now have a whole bookshelf of brewing books. The two things that set Homebrewing for Dummies apart is that it covers many topics without going into great depth and it has an excellent index. This book is a great quick reference for beginning brewers though when it isn't loaned out I still look things up in it.

4 out of 5 stars Good general guide book........2006-03-15

I have been brewing for about 3 years now and still find useful items in this book. I have still not moved to all grain, but for the beginner this is a good all around book.

The phrase "beer for dummies" may ring redundant in a world where wine snobbery has made "beer education" sound more like an oxymoron than a worthwhile endeavor. Yet the mass-produced fizz-water that commonly passes for beer is really an unrepresentative descendent of the classic European pilsner style--just one of more than 20 categories of beer recognized by modern brewers. Beer for Dummies is a terrific reference for those beer lovers who might be surprised or enticed by beer's oft-forgotten diversity.

In the down-to-earth, light-hearted tone typical of the For Dummies series, Marty Nachel covers most--if not all--of the beer lover's terrain. Sections on defining, enjoying, buying, making, and "going nuts over" beer comprise the balance of the book, but even more information follows by way of reference: you'll learn about beer and brewing clubs, beer history, collector's info, and more. The advanced topics may be spread a bit thin by the book's breadth, but the neophyte beer enthusiast has much to glean from such a broad overview. Those to whom "hops" and "mashing" still sound like terms for teen revelry should give Beer for Dummies a chance to redefine their idea of beer. --Todd Gehman

5 out of 5 stars Beer For Dummies.......2007-08-20

This book was very helpful and took away much of the mystery about beer and its complexities.

4 out of 5 stars Increase Your Beer Knowledge.......2005-02-04

This entry in the "Dummies" series is a book all about beer. It provides a good reference book for those who want to lookup facts and discover trivia about beer and the art of brewing; tasting and evaluation; cooking with beer; home brewing; and other topics.

The authors of this book write in a very matter of fact style. They use bulleted text, shaded boxes, and other eye- grabbing techniques throughout, making the book look like the layout of a long advertising piece. Plenty of lists and trivial facts can be found throughout the pages of the book, and the authors seem very interested in increasing your beer I.Q.

Some sections of this book probably deserve a little more coverage then they receive. Prohibition, one of the ugliest events in world history, receives less than one page of discussion. I guess the authors felt this wasn't significant to the modern- day enjoyment and understanding of malt beverages so they limited its allotted space.

This makes a good reference book for anyone who wants to know more about beer. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned veteran in the world of malt beverages, this guide will prove to be fun and educational.

4 out of 5 stars The Beer book that got me started.......2002-06-06

I got into beer about five years ago when I discovered just how much the really good wines cost. I started by buying this book, and with over 1200 different beers sampled, and over a dozen batches brewed, I really appreciate the start it gave me. I've actually used some of the recipes (both for food and homebrewing). I've also utilized the lists of beer and brewpubs to help search out new adventures in beer. I think the thing that I appreciate the most is the breadth. Most beer books are specialized into lists and ratings of beer, or homebrewing, but this one has a comprehensive feel about. If you're just starting to get into beer, or you're thinking about it, I'd tell you to get this book before any others.

5 out of 5 stars This is THE book for beer information........1998-06-12

Everything you ever wanted to know about beer can be found in this book, from beer ingredients to little known facts about beer to homebrewing. It's very informative.

4 out of 5 stars A good book with onlt one flaw.......1998-02-07

Beer for dummies is an excellent starting point fo people who want to learn more about beer. it is well organised with good information and a little humor. It's one flaw is that a few chapters of the book are little more than tables that don't really help the novice user and can be overwelming. It is overall one of the better books about beer.
