Retro-fitment of Rollover Protective Structures (ROPS) on old tractors continues to be a priority for farm safety in Australia. Methods: A state wide (New South Wales (NSW), Australia) random postal survey asked farmers about awareness of, attitudes to and barriers to fitting ROPS; age and number of tractors with/without ROPS on their farm; and considerations when purchasing a tractor. Results: In NSW there are 2.5 tractors per farm ranging from new to 79 years of age (average 17 years) of which 0.4 per farm do not have a ROPS (18430 tractors). People who knew of someone who had been injured or killed in a tractor rollover were 3.6 times (CI"9"5"% 3.1-4.2) more likely to have all their tractors fitted with a ROPS. Those who thought ROPS were effective or knew it was a legal requirement were 1.5 (CI"9"5"% 1.2-1.8 and 1.4-1.7 respectively) times more likely to have all their tractors fitted with a ROPS. Some of the barriers to fitting a ROPS were cost, availability of a ROPS and making ROPS a priority. The three most common considerations for farmers when purchasing a tractor are size, jobs to be undertaken and cost with safety coming in fourth. Ideas that were considered useful in prompting farmers to fit a ROPS were threat of fine or prosecution, increased awareness and high rebates. Discussion: As the average age of the primary working tractor is 17 years, any new tractor safety measure will have a long latency period if there is not some sort of retro-fitment. To increase retro-fitment rebates are a useful strategy. Any retro-fitment campaign needs to ensure that they create a need for the safety item and have addressed the barriers.

Easy Access to Good Food.......2003-11-12

I began cooking from this book about 12 years ago, when it was first released in hardcover. I did not know Jaques Pepin's reputation, I simply wanted recipes one can do quickly. My bottom line on this book is that it succeeded in delivering on the promise of the book's title.

I confess I was a little cynical about Pepin's book at first. Pierre Franey, a chef whose very very impressive pedigree I did know had published, at that time, at least three volumes of quick cooking recipes based on his well-known New York Times column. I interpreted this as simply 'jumping on the bandwagon' of a popular trend. I got it anyway because the evidence of Pepin's previous books and the blurbs on the back of the dust jacket attested to Pepin's credentials in the kitchen. Little did I realize that Franey and Pepin were close friends and had worked together for many years.

Regarding thie recipes in this book, I am very happy to find the reliance on prepared foods such as the famous Campbell's soups, to be much smaller than one may expect from the introduction. I also believe that unlike Rachael Ray, Jacques does not accomplish his objective by finding short cuts to long techniques, but keeps his dishes short by selecting recipies which are classicly short on preparation. In this way, he succeeds in describing recipies with few or no compromises on results.

Having prepared several dishes from this book, I will warn you that Pepin is wise not to give any expectations about how long these dishes should actually take. While there is not a lot of prep work in most recipes, some of the recipes do require a fair amount A perfect example is the Salade Nicoise. This may be faster than the recipe in Julia Child's books, but you still need to plan for some serious shopping and prep work to get a good result.Another example is one of my favorites, his Asian influenced tangy rice stick salad. It looks simple on page 105, until you realize you need to do an ingredient preparation on page 22 which takes longer than the final recipe.

All grousing aside, this is really good stuff. The price for 200 recipes of this quality is a real bargain. My only other complaint is that the short section in the beginning of the book on stocking one's pantry is probably a waste of time. Whenever I buy anything with the expectation that I will use it in some unknown recipe in the future, I usually find the stuff spoils or expires before I get around to using it. After a fair amount of experience in cooking from cookbooks, I have learned to ignore all such recommendations and simply buy what I need for what I know I will be making in the next week.

No Ego Here -- A Title That Delivers.......2003-06-17

Jacques Pepin is known for honest, straight-forward, fool proof techqniue and advice. As the most familiar French face for most American foodies, his association has generally been with what Americans consider "classic" French cooking.

But Pepin has been touting all along the simplicity of "real" French cooking -- from his home kitchen to that of his mother's, these recipes attest to the paradigm that a few high quality products can transform a meal into something memorable.

Many contemporary food writers tout quick cooking as a new phenomenon, borne from the hectic digital lifestyles we live. However, quick cooking has always existed and been in continuous evolution for the busy individual for, sadly, time has never been on our side.

This collection of recipes, efficiently organized and simply presented all offer genuine short cuts to fantastic meals. He offers priceless insight on how to stock your pantry (although, what he recommends calls for a fabulously Martha-large kitchen), but you get the general idea of being well prepared. Practical advice on how to entertain surprise guests and making do with what you've got allows the home cook (and individual with a life) to create Mock Chocolate Mousse, Easy Cheese Souffle (a la Madame Pepin), and his daughter Claudine's favorite cake (simple butter cake, a little apricot preserves, allfrosted with vanilla pudding mixed with whipped cream)!

The book is a joy to read. Pepin is a humble, genuine culinary figure eager to offer his expertise to reinforce the love of everyday cooking. No ego here. Just good food.

Nice Try, But It Fails.......2007-09-18

A cookbook full of recipes to save the busy person time in the kitchen? Quick, easy, and simple recipes that can be done in a flash? Nice idea, but the execution is not that successful. The selection of recipes do not always meet the stated goal. While I do like the recipes, I do not really recommend this book.

While some recipes can be done in a few minutes when you come home from work allowing you to get dinner on the table in short order, my main complaint is that many recipes take a long time, perhaps even the next day before the recipe is finished. It would have been useful, since the author intends this book for busy working person, to rate each recipe for number of minutes of active work and a total recipe duration time, so you know how much time you need to devote and at what point dinner will be ready.

Another problem is the use of canned or frozen goods. While I strongly support the idea, they tend to be expensive (have you priced bottled, roasted bell peppers or fresh lobster meat recently?). Also, you are unlikely to have them in your pantry or freezer, unless you have carefully studied the author's recommended pantry and spent a small fortune at the grocery store beforehand. This will often entail a special trip to the store to pick up the missing ingredients; this includes the author's suggestion to pick up ingredients from the store's salad bar, to save a couple of minutes of prep time in the kitchen. Some sort of cross-reference would also have been helpful: a list of the convenience foods used by the author, and a reference to which recipes use that ingredient.

A great number of recipes require the use of a food processor, so do not even think about buying this book unless you have one. Also, some recipes require a specialized piece of equipment: fondue pot setup, grill fish basket, food mill, pressure cooker, etc., so make sure you read the recipe to make sure you have the required kitchen tools.

Many of the recipes are not much of a short cut. How is it a time-saver to fire up the BBQ grill so we can cook seafood in a couple of minutes? It is true that fish cooks quickly, but is this really a short-cut? It is hard to understand how the recipes in the appetizers, soups, salads, fish, and poultry and meat chapters really represent much of short cut over traditional recipes. I would like to know how many hours the author thinks the recipe for `Roast Turkey with Garlic' will take from beginning to end: the author calls for a smaller 12# bird, but you have to add the defrosting time (in days) to the roasting time, unless manage to find a fresh turkey (not easy to find).

On the good side, most of the recipes are pretty good, and are easy for the typical home to do. His approach is most successful in these chapters: bread, vegetable, and dessert. He makes great use of frozen bread dough, frozen vegetables, frozen fruit, and store-bought cakes. His use of pre-made wonton wrappers from the grocery store is also very clever. A lot of the recipes in these chapters are genuine time savers, and are really good.

Gourmet cooking is not that hard; Pepin shows you how........2006-02-27

This handsome book covers the full range: Appetizers you just "whipped up" for guests; sandwiches; imaginative pastas; all the meats & fish in easy to make dishes; on to gourmet desserts with no tears. This could be the book that eliminates your fear of caviar, too. The secret is in the shortcuts that do not affect the real quality of the dishes; but do save you hours of time preparing them.

This book is very realistic. It doesn't use exotic ingredients or extraordinary efforts, but the results are excellent.

This cookbook is one of the best I have come across. I love cookbooks and I'm always trying different recipes. But this cookbook has really got me trying one recipe after the other.

After finding this book in the library and looking through it... I knew I HAD to buy it. There were just too many recipes I wanted to try. I usally only buy canned soups, and while I have used them in creative ways I never dreamed that they, along with dry mixes could add so much to so many foods! I plan on making one of the shrimp dip recipes for our department pitch in, and a co-worker is going to make the Tomato Soup Spice Cake. This book is for the novice as well as the experienced cook. Keep it handy.. you will use it often!

Good variety - Easy Prep & Cooking.......2003-11-09

This cook book is a must have for anyone needing new ideas for the family. A short grocery list is all thats needed to provide variety. I found that most of the items required were things I already had in the pantry. These dishes have very simple ingredients and I have found many that are winners with my sometimes picky young adult children. They are quick which is great for the working mom. Vegetables are used throughout, so it's not just a cheese and starch book. What impressed me most was the layout of the book itself - it's just as easy to find a new recipe as it is to prepare one.

I checked this out from the library after reading the great reviews. It gives some very helpful advice with a list of must have spices, herbs, and a list of the different soup mixes with an explanation of what each can be used for. There's also a section on recipes for dry rubs and seasoning mixes which was great.
I made the meatloaf last night with the beef onion soup mix and used cornbread stuffing in place of plain breadcrumbs and spread the ketchup on top. It tasted so good! Then I realized that I wasn't feeling like myself which usually happens after I have something with BHT or MSG (monosodium glutamate). All the Lipton soup mixes contain MSG. I was so disappointed. Unless I can find another brand of soup mix without MSG this book won't do me much good. :(
