Customer Reviews:
Taking Income Tax? Buy this book!.......2004-12-07
I strongly, strongly recommend this book for any law student taking an income tax course who has no experience in accounting. I read this book in the beginning of the class- it's relatively short and incredibly readable- and it made the actual class a breeze. Like most law school subjects, it's easy to lose the forest for the trees, and starting off with this book will let you understand how things fit together before you start slogging through- and get lost in- the Code.
As a corollary to that, this book is basically useless as an exam prep; it's too much of a general survey of the topic, and if you're using this to prep for your final you are in deep trouble. However, if you just signed up for tax in the winter term, buy this book and read it over break- it'll take you a day or two, and you'll be glad you did.
Much more engaging than you'd expect from a tax guru.......2002-09-03
If you get a kick out of the legal writers who make no attempt to hide their arrogance (Scalia comes to mind), then you will enjoy reading Professor Marv. You get the feeling that he often wonders to himself what it's like to be stupid.
Even if you don't take to his "burdened genius" persona, it won't prevent you from seeing new ways of looking at concepts in addition what your casebook provides. He wrote this as a "universal supplement," and has taken care to avoid a retread of any of the major texts.
Unlike previous editions, according to the author, this one has a Q & A section at the end of every chapter. They're useful exercises, especially since they have answers and explanations, unlike most casebooks.
As advertised.......2001-01-28
This book comes as advertised. It's a clear, succinct, helpful, and occasionally witty introduction to the law of federal income taxation. Chirelstein has a rare talent for making the sometime inscrutable rules of tax law accessible to even the most tax-phobic law student. Particularly useful are his examples (even his charts and numbers are easy and helpful!) and "Loose ends," in which he ties up a particular chapter or subchapter with some point of clarification that makes so much sense you're just sure your professor is going to have something about it on the exam. Which also bears a point of warning: law professors read it too! Beware of using it as your principal text, as, thorough as it is, the book does not cover all the cases and doctrines of tax law. I know firsthand that clever professors can and do write Chirelstein-proof exams.
A useful introduction.......2000-04-19
This book is a useful introduction to some of the principal concepts of the U.S. tax law. I recommend it to law students, young tax lawyers and other professionals that need to develop a good foundation of basic tax law concepts. The framework this title will help you develop will be of great assistance in learning how to think about tax issues and understanding more specialized areas of the law.

- Guarantees postings of future significant changes to the tax rules regarding S corporations on the author's Web site, www.robertcooke.com-which you can check for updates as you read the book
- Includes revised rules for home offices
Customer Reviews:
Great book for a beginner.......2003-03-16
I own a company and needed to learn about the basics of tax reduction. I found this book to be useful in just the basics. Because it concentrated on many topics, I believe it wasn't able to focus on many items that would have been useful to me. However, it was well written and easy to read, and I give it five stars because it gave me many broad questions to ask my tax consultant.
Less than what I expected.......2001-11-12
I thought that this book would have tons of lists of tips and give lots of legal, but perhaps edgey advice, but it fell short. I didn't find it easy to read through, I didn't find lots of lists and tips, I like books like this to make it easier.
I am sure the advice is sound, but what I found here didn't seem to live up to what the cover implied.
Where are the S-Corps?.......2001-01-21
I found this book a bit loose, and am looking for a more thorough description of financial management practices unique to an S-Corp. I have been looking for a definitive description of S-Corp accounting practices and concrete tax saving advice. My S-Corp. started last April, from a 3-month old sole proprietorship with all the requisite Federal and State designations. If anyone knows of a book particular to S-Corps, it would be much appreciated. In conclusion, I have found this book helpful, yet not as specific or thorough as I had hoped.
An understandable book on reducing business taxes.......2000-06-29
Full of good ideas conveyed with a clear writing style, this book gives readers lots of good, concrete examples of how different businesses can reduce their tax burden. I was looking to create a new company and wanted to figure out which type of company was right for me (partnership, LLC, Chapter S, or C Corp). By following the examples in the book, I was able to zero in on the right organization for my consulting business. I have no doubt that when it is all said and done, I will have saved thousands of dollars by reading this excellent book.

Book Description
In this sequel to his highly popular 1,001 Facts Somebody Screwed Up, Jordan has unearthed another mother lode of misinformation.
Customer Reviews:
Humorous but Invalid.......2005-08-31
After reading through the book there are many comical comments. Many, however, are twisted statistics, un-amusing facts, and some others are just plain out wrong.
An example:
Jordan says Nero did not burn rome, but in fact was well away from the fire playing the lyre. (Not in the book, but the source of the phrase "fiddling while Rome burns" and "Get me a fiddle").
While Nero did not start the fire, he did not play the lyre during it either. He was out helping to extinguish the fire (read: grabbing a water bucket, filling, tossing, and hoping for the best).
Another:
Jordan states that not all games the object is to go forwards - that in tug of war, you go backwards.
I enjoyed reading it - it definately makes you think about things. Just be careful before quoting them at a party or re-structuring your pitiful existance around them.
Misleading title--neither 1,001, nor facts people screwed up.......2001-04-14
The original book was mildly amusing--this one scrapes the bottom of the barrel. Many of the "fact someone screwed up" are not. This is just a compendium of trivia--and despite the title, there aren't 1,001 of them either. The author makes prominent note of that, as if providing a disclaimer. Then why the misleading title? MOreover, it seems a good number of the "corrections" provided by the author are based on his own experience. He doesn't cite any sources, so it's not clear why we should take him at his word. The book would read much better if the assorted tidbits of knowledge were organized in some fashion. Instead, they are presented randomly--natural science facts, history facts, literary facts, and so on are all interspersed. On the plus side, the trivia can be interesting--though more detail would have been nice. Each fact is given rather superficial treatment. I think better focus and greater detail would have helped this book a lot.
How does he do it?.......2001-01-07
Author Deane Jordan has come up with yet another series of mistaken beliefs and distorted history. Some of these are rib busting funny, and some amusing cocktail fare, but it's nice to know someone is checking up on common knowledge.
pretty good, and very amusing.......2000-04-06
This is a good book for when your friend cant play and your done with homework. You can re-read it as many times as you want and it's still funny. A good amuser, though it could be better.
