Book Description
Based on the findings in recently released archive papers and letters, as well as extensive library and historical resources, Alan Axelrod offers a compelling profile of the remarkable leadership discipline of a general often called a "military CEO." In fascinating detail, Axelrod reveals that Ike was more than a great military leader; he was also a great executive who couldâand didâwrite a reassuring letter to the mother of a solider one moment and make decisions impacting millions of lives the next.
Follow Ike's path as Supreme Commander from the invasion of North Africa to victory in Europe and learn the lessons of great leadership along the way, including:
- The nature of leadership
- Managing detail without sacrificing the “big picture”
- Ensuring follow-through to execution
- Building a team
- Converting conflict into common cause
- Getting the facts and making plans
- Mentoring, motivating, and inspiring

Great for CEOs of CEOs and those who want to improve their written communication, but so so for the rest. .......2007-07-20
I rated "Patton on Leadership" by the same author a four star with the title "Great on Patton "and" Leadership." I had expected this to be of the same good quality. Sorry that I had been a little bit disappointed. Dont know whether it's the difference of the two characters that Eisenhower is one of decision making and Patton is one of action taking, or the author had deliberately based his new book primiarily on the correspondence written by Eisenhower, or simply the author had overdone it (there are 232 lessons), I found this not interesting and over stretched. I still can remember some good leadership stories I read from "Patton on Leadership." All I can recall from this is that Eisenhower possessed very strong political skills who strived to strike the balance right and use correct tone and words all the time. Great for CEOs of CEOs and those who want to improve their written communication, but so so for the rest.

The best Photo-Essay on the war in NW Europe that I have see.......1999-07-03
G. E. Patrick Murray's latest historical effort is the best small volume of the war in Europe that I have seen. It is a concise reconstruction beginning with D-Day and ending with the Nazi surrender in early May, 1945. The writing, the photo selection and the situation maps are outstanding. The maps are the best I have seen in any history of WW II. If you are a military history buff or know someone who is, the addition of this book is a must.
from D-Day to victory in pictures.......1999-05-30
I look at this review from a differnt perspective from most. Having been a student of Dr. Murray I have see the way that he lectures and is able to get his point across. This book shows the Western Front form the eye of the camera and has a very well writen timeline to go along with it. Unlike most books this one does not stop at the Battle of the Bulge and skip to the surrender of the Nazi leaders. He show the battles that occured all the up to the meeting of the Russians and the Anglo-American forces. This book also includes a very extensive index that makes searching for facts easy. As a student it is nice to see the highlights of the lectures put into print for everyone else. Well done. (Beefcake)
Book Description
This book, published to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of VE Day, is a graphic account of the storming and taking of Hitler's Festung Europa (?Fortress Europe?) by the Allies during the final eleven months of the Second World War. The book shows spread-by-spread the relentless progress of the epic war in the European Theater of Operations, and focuses on the world-famous engagements such as Operation Market-Garden (immortalized in the film A Bridge too Far), the Battle of the Bulge, the bombing of Dresden and other German cities, the fall of Berlin, and VE Day itself. Written by a leading military historian and including a wealth of first-hand accounts on an audio CD, the Imperial War Museum's WW2 Victory in Europe Experience contains 30 facsimile items of memorabilia integrated into the pages of the book. The reader can re-live this momentous period of history by examining maps, diaries, letters, and other items which up till now have remained filed or exhibited in the Imperial Wa

Great concept adds a new dimension.......2007-08-23
This book and others in the series have added a new dimension, involving the reader with reproductions of maps and documents from the era. I have been giving the to my dad a gifts and will be looking for the next one to come out.
truely history in your hands.......2005-11-19
This is far more than a book. It is a curriculum and a fun experience. I loved it and I have not even listened to the CD yet. The graphics are beautiful, the text wonderful as well as accurate and interesting. The very best part is the inclusion of some 60 reproductions of documents associated with the war. Operations orders, leaflets, diaries, paper money. and more--much more. Of course most people know about the critical weather decision on June 5th, but I certainly had never seen the weather map for the day and with the book you can not only see it (the weaher map), but also hold (a reproduction of it), but study it and transport yourself back to the briefing room. The overall reproduction quality of the included items is good or better. I wrote a World War II book with the subtitle "history in your hands," but my hat is off to Julian Thompson because he trumped our effort.

Book Description
On June 6, 1944, the greatest armada in history stood off Normandy and the largest amphibious invasion ever began as 107,000 men aboard 6,000 ships pressed toward the coast. Among them were 14,500 Canadians, who were to land on a five-mile-long stretch of rocky ledges fronted by a dangerously exposed beach. Drawing on personal diaries as well as military records, Juno Beach: Canada's D-Day Victory — June 6, 1944 dramatically depicts Canada's pivotal contribution to the critical Allied battle of World War II.

As good as the Canadian troops it is about.......2006-11-10
Excellent account of the most impressive effort of D-Day. Enough of this Omaha Beach chatter! Here is the real story of D-Day, told in detail heretofore unseen.
Interesting read.......2004-09-09
Juno is a highly detailed account of the Normandy invasion, on all three fronts, air, land, and sea. Its focus is on the Canadian participation of units and their actions on June 6th. Normally, Canadian participation in this pivotal World War 2 battle is usually glossed over by other historians, if mentioned at all.
Leading up to the invasion, there are chapters on how different units trained and prepared, from the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and its role with the British 6th Airborne Division, to the minesweepers that swept lanes into the beaches for the assault craft, to the fighter and bomber units that blasted the beach defences on Juno beach.
By the mid-point of the book, units of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division are steaming for the beaches. The battle for all 5 sectors of the beach are pretty interesting and filled with moments of courage and bravado, as men struggle up the sand and rush machinegun nests and bunkers.
There are several sections detailing German response and the opinions of the commanders of the 716th Infantry, the 21st Panzer, and other units facing the Canadians. These were interesting but I would have liked more detail.
There are also interviews with veterans who actually fought there as well as information from government archives. The only thing I found lacking in this book that I had enjoyed in Zuehlke's Ortona book was the anecdotes and quirky little stories that punctuated that volume.
It should be noted that this book only details the events leading up to and the day of June 6th. The following battles for Caen and the Falaise Gap are not part of this book. All in all, it kept me interested and I found it hard to put down.

The End of all Diseases.......2006-06-26
To much conspiracy to be beleivable. However, it is a fiction so it does not have to be believable. Not very well written in my opinion.
This book is not what you think.......2006-04-10
By the cover you would never know it is a ( VERY Poor) piece of fiction, written as if an adolescent was given a high school assignment and was just passed an article about Royal Rife the day before. I'd say someone owes me 10 bucks, but that old adage of a fool and his money soon being parted, keeps running through my mind.
I felt cheated.......2004-09-20
I am not very happy I purchased this book. In fact I felt cheated of my money. Looking at the front and back cover of the book, you would expect to find something more serious than a paperback fiction story. I was expecting some serious analysis of Mr.Rife's life and his ground-breaking work; what I ended up with is a third-rate story purporting to be a thriller.
The first chapter is good, though the autor digresses into the story of Mt.Rife's father-in-law, and how he became a local tycoon, but then comes back on track. The third chapter starts a protracted description of Mr.Rife's apparatus, extending from p.20 through p.38, most of which would make little sense to many people: you really don't want to go through that unless you happen to be good in physics.
I think by mixing fact and fiction, the author has seriously undermined the veracity of Mr.Rife and his excellent research. I mean, where in the book does one draw the line between fact and fantasy?
I would definitely not recommend this book to anybody, since it fails both as investigative medical journalism as well as a good story.
Separating Fact from Fiction.......2003-12-31
This book would have scored better had it an introduction that stated the objective of the book. The first section, about Rife, we know is true. After that it becomes muddled as whether or not the other characters in the book truly exist at all (or ever did). If the remaining chapters are completely fiction, based loosely on facts, or "only the names were changed...," then it would have been better, and a lot less confusing, if the author had informed us. Perhaps there was a clue somewhere, but if so, I missed it. I'd STILL like to know.
The End of All Diseases.......2003-12-18
This book should be a movie. The author does what no one has done before, he found a way to dramatize and emphasize the importance of what happened and the significance of the conspiracy against Rife and his methods. It is not the usual recapping of the Rife machine but rather deals more with the ramifications to everyone who has suffered, perhaps needlessly, from a disease that was cured in the 1930's but not allowed to be used.

Real Yoga.......2005-03-31
Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow is an excellent book that captures all of the components of yoga.
There are clear instructions and excellent photos for the postures, suggested routines for all levels, tips on nutrition, and guidelines for meditation.
My favorite feature of the book is the openness with which it is written. Doug encourages the yogi to be creative with their practice and offers modifications and sequencing to boot.
Check out his DVD of the same title; it helped me really understand the flow of the practice by watching his demonstrations.
a complete yoga how-to book.......2004-02-17
Doug Swenson's Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow is for you if you are interested in starting a home practice or if you are wanting to incorporate yoga into more aspects of your life. Part II offers detailed, yet easy to follow instructions for asana practice, and covers sequencing and linking the asanas with vinyasas. The vinyasas give the routine its unique flavor, since Swenson connects one asana to another through tai chi-type movements that work with the energy of the natural environment. The book encourages creativity, giving the yogi choices of asanas from which to choose in designing a safe practice. I loved Part III the most, though, for its discussion on meditation, diet, cross-training, and bringing yoga into your daily life. In a very non-judgmental manner, Swenson describes how to progress to a diet plan that is healthy and life-sustaining. I expect to refer back to the book for years to come.
Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow.......2004-02-16
A+ for Dougs new book, "Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow." This book is a great book for any Yogi. I love the way Doug flows in and out of asanas. And in this book, he shows you how. He also has alot of information on diet and nutrition, which many yoga books don't. His book is filled with so much information. I am co-director of Seaside Yoga, and I strongly recommend this book to all of our students that come to our studio. It has something for everybody and for every level.
good stuff.......2004-02-15
Mastering The Secrets is a great read covering everything from poses to nutrition and lifestyle. Pretty easy and user friendly languaging and helpful pictures to boot. Dougs style has a very natural and invigorating flow which I liken to yoga meets tai-chi. I would highly recommend the book to any level of practicioner! Much like learning from Doug in person, the book has a very knowledgable yet layed back and often humerous style. Enjoy!
Engaging Book.......2004-02-13
Mastering the Secrets of Yoga Flow is an excellent book on a truly unique form of yoga personally developed by Doug Swenson. Doug's Sadhana Yoga is one of the most graceful and naturally flowing I have seen. Doug's experience with tai chi is very much evident, with beautifully flowing vinyasas concentrated on the movement of energy. Using the power of the breath and the strength and energy of nature he literally seems to flow like water. The book eagerly covers both soft and hard flowing asana and includes modifications and instructions with props, making it ideal for both beginners and those looking for a more sophisticated and meditative yoga style. Doug provides not only complete routines for beginner and advanced students, but includes in-depth sections on meditation, discussing breath, visual and sound exercises; nutrition; and life beyond the mat. I found the chapter on nutrition and the advocating of a raw food diet especially interesting. With our current culture of Atkins obsession, Doug's discussion of the importance of protein and carbohydrates in a balanced diet was refreshing. The chapter discusses a healthy attitude toward food, and includes meal plans for three levels of dieters. Mastering the Secrets is a wonderful book with a fabulous holistic approach to yoga. I highly recommend it not only for great instruction but for purely magical inspiration.
