Product Description
Drafted into the Marine Corps, Tom Prater discovers the reality of the Vietnam War. His gung-ho ideas turn into a survival story.
Customer Reviews:
The Real Deal.......2007-01-07
Fiction can't come close to telling what Mr. Prater experienced. Having served my country in the US ARMY, it was easy to put myself into the story. I felt the anger, fear and frustration the author describes at every turn. The book is not about a gung ho super soldier who single handedly defeats the evil enemy...(that's fiction), it's about what war is really like and what effects it has on a human being.
Once a Marine, Always a Marine.......2002-10-05
What an outstanding book! It is full of non-stop action from an author who puts you in the battle zone with him. Mr. Prater is able to put you into these true to life battle scenes and lets the reader know what true war is about without the Hollywood gloss one is accustom to seeing.
This is certainly more a biopic that anyone who was concious during the Vietnam era will certainly be able to relate to. I found it hard to put the book down as Mr. Prater truly provides a unique look into the Marine Corps in a battle situation and a look at the training they recieve.
Whether you are interested in the book as a Vietnam era story, or as an account of a man who didn't let his patriotism end even through the worst tragedies, I recommend this book for every American.

Readable, informative, and handy.......2005-10-02
This is a good introduction to the life of Albert Einstein, beloved physicist and Time magazine Man of the 20th Century.
Biographies about Albert Einstein can be divided into two categories: those written before 1987 when his papers and voluminous correspondence were made public, and after when the peccadillos of his life became more widely known. Authors Karen C. Fox and Aries Keck treat us to more than a few of those peccadillos, including his offer to marry either his cousin Elsa Lowenthal or her daughter Ilse, remarking that he was in love with both women, but wanted to have a child with Ilse!
Einstein biographies can also be categorized according to what the biographer chooses to emphasize, Einstein's private life or his scientific accomplishments, or both. In this book you can choose by letter which part of Einstein's life you want to read about. The alphabetical entries begin with "Absentmindedness" and end with "Zionism." In between are such entries as "Cosmological Constant," "Einstein, Mileva Maric" (Einstein's first wife), "Jokes about Einstein," the "Michelson-Morley Experiment," "Princeton," "Twin Paradox," etc.. In all there are 114 entries, a Timeline, an Introduction, a Selected Bibliography, and an Index. The entries are like little self-contained essays. They are well-written, informative and without any kind of bias while revealing that Einstein is definitely a man worth writing about.
Here's an Einstein joke. Einstein's driver used to sit in the back of the lecture hall while Einstein lectured. He sat there so many times that he said he could probably give the lecture himself. One day Einstein took him up on the idea, and the driver gave a flawless lecture with Einstein watching from the back of the room. At the end there was a question, and the lecturer said that "...the answer to that question is so simple, I bet that even my driver, sitting up at the back could answer it." (p. 148)
Sometimes I like to compare Einstein to other great scientists much as some people compare baseball players. What are the greatest baseball players of all time? I won't hazard an opinion, but my three greatest scientists are Einstein, Newton and Darwin in no particular order. Certainly Einstein is the most celebrated. Reading this "biography" makes that clear.
I was struck with just how human the authors make Einstein appear with his very human failings as a father and a husband along with his nearly superhuman accomplishments as a physicist. I was especially struck with Einstein's stubborn streak. Even at the time of his death in 1955 he still did not fully accept quantum mechanics, being especially disenchanted with the notion of "entanglement," which he called "spooky action at a distance." This is somewhat ironic since Einstein, along with his good friend Niels Bohr (with whom he had many spirited, even heated, discussions), Max Born, Max Planck, Werner Heisenberg, and others were the architects of QM.
What makes this book so agreeable is how handy it is for dipping into and finding something out about Einstein and his work, and how gracefully and informatively it is written.
One last point. Fox and Keck do mention Einstein's famous disdain for socks. They speculate that he didn't like to wear them not merely because he didn't care about his appearance, "but possibly because they were physically uncomfortable." (p. 59) Maybe, but since I gotten older and have had time to think long and hard on this most interesting subject, I can report that the real reason that Einstein didn't like to wear socks is he didn't like to bend over and pull them on or push them off. If you've ever tried to put on a tight pair of socks, you know what I mean.
Bottom line: fun to read, nontechnical with just enough science for the layperson to appreciate.
Surprsingly entertaining and informative.......2004-10-21
At first glance, could there be a worse way to present the life and work of a deep and complex figure like Einstein than chopping him up into 300 pages of encyclopedia entries? Much to my surprise, this fresh approach to Einstein by science writers Karen Fox and Aries Keck really works. It helps that every entry is well researched and sparkingly written, but even the inevitable repetitions turn out to be helpful, often reinforcing an important idea or presenting it from a different angle. I read the book from beginning to end on a long airplane trip, and found it as enjoyable and engrossing as any book I've read recently.
Even though I've read many books about Einstein, and written a chapter about him in my book _Science Firsts_, I found quite a lot in _Einstein A to Z_ that was new to me. For example, I did not know that the German army was aware of the possibility of an atomic bomb as early as 1924, or how intensely Einstein was monitored by the FBI from 1932 on, or that Life magazine once labelled Einstein a Communist dupe or fellow traveller. I also thought the authors did a great job of tracing the evolution of Einstein's philosophical thoughts about science, from a very hard-nosed version of Mach's positivism (physics should deal only with observables) that guided his earliest work to a view that embraced the necessity of hypothesizing intangibles such as the gravitational field.
My only quibble with the authors was what I felt was their somewhat apologetic depiction of Einstein's lifelong battle against political repression wherever her encountered it. This was as central to Einstein as his science. He was outspoken in his battles against fascism and anti-Semitism in Germany, McCarthyism in the U.S., the nuclear arms race, and excessive nationalism wherever he saw it, including, as the authors point out, in Israel. His political views may or may not play well in America today, but they certainly don't need to be apologized for.
I don't think Einstein A to Z should be the only book about Einstein a person reads, but it certainly can hold its own with the more traditionally organized biographies. It's well worth reading.
Robert Adler, author of _Science Firsts: From the Creation of Science to the Science of Creation_; and _Medical Firsts: From Hippocrates to the Human Genome_.
I guess I AM the right audience. . . .......2004-07-31
I picked this up and was amazed when it was 3 hours later and I'd let everything else I was supposed to do in the afternoon slip by me. I'm NOT a scientist, so perhaps it's not aimed at people who already know a lot about Einstein, but it was just the perfect level for me. I liked the stories about his life interwoven with information about his theories. The format of the book -- it's made of lots of entries on subjects from his relationships with women to his work on the atom bomb -- really worked for me, and I'd love to see other biographies organized like this!
I guess I'm not the intended customer on this one. .......2004-07-29
I guess I'm not the intended customer on this one. It read like a stack of high school book reports and the writing style felt somewhat clichéd. The information is there though. Could easily be given a yellow "Einstein for Dummies" cover.
Accessible information for the non-scientist.......2004-07-28
This book is a great first-stop for students researching Einstein's life and works as well as those who want to gain some insight on Einstein but don't want to read a textbook. The book's easy-to-read sections teach you enough on that particular topic to feel satisfied by what you've learned or confident enough to take your research further with a more in-depth source. I really like books that can draw me into science by showing the human side of a scientist; for me, it makes complicated theories that much more accessible. I would even recommend this book to a book club. Whether you read it in its entirety or read just the sections of particular interest to you, the book could really open up a great discussion about one of the world's biggest science icons.

Wonderful set of books , but small sized.......2007-08-21
This set of books is a wonderful lot to add to a baby's library . Though some of the books may not be useful rightaway like the ones with poetry and about nature (my 10 month old wont sit for these), it will definitely be a very good lot for years to come.
The reason I gave 4 stars for this set is I expected it to be a big sized hardcover book, but they are small hardcover books. Wish these books were bigger so the pictures would be more elaborate for a baby to look at, also if it had been in the form of a board book, it would have been excellent.
But overall, for the price (I bought a used set of books from amazon) , it is well worth, but I see people bidding for this book set crazily on ebay, I don't think it is worth paying a $100 for these small sized ones.
The contents of some of the books in this set are repeated ones from other Baby Einstein series like "365 days of baby einstein", "Vangogh's world of color", "Art Masterpieces" .
Overall good book set if purchased from Amamzon's used books or if you get a good deal on ebay .

Book Description
John Stachel, the author of this collection of 37 published and unpublished articles on Albert Einstein, has written about Einstein and his work for over 40 years. Trained as a theoretical physicist specializing in the theory of relativity, he was chosen as the founding editor of
The Collected papers of Albert Einstein 25 years ago, and is currently Director of the Boston University Center for Einstein Studies.
Based on a detailed study of documentary evidence, much of which was newly discovered in the course of his work, Stachel debunks many of the old (and some new) myths about Einstein and offers novel insight into his life and work. Throughout the volume, a new, more human picture of Einstein is offered to replace the plaster saint of popular legend. In particular, a youthful Einstein emerges from the obscurity that previously shrouded his early years, and much new light is shed on the origins of the special and general theories of relativity. Also discussed in some detail are Einstein's troubled relationship with his first wife, his friendships with other physicists such as Eddington, Bose, and Pauli, and his Jewish identity.
The essays are grouped thematically into the following areas:
* The Human Side
* Editing the Einstein Papers
* Surveys of Einstein's Work
* Special Relativity
* General Relativity
* Quantum Theory
* Einstein and Other Scientists
* Book Reviews
Because the essays are independent of one another, readers will be able to dip into this collection to satisfy varying interests. It will be of particular interest to historians of 20th century science, working physicists, and students, as well as to the many members of the general reading public who continue to be fascinated by aspects of Einstein's life and work.
Customer Reviews:
Einstein for Today.......2007-03-09
In his book, professor Stachel imparts the reader an insight into both Einstein as a scientist and as a human being. Stachel's massive knowledge of and affection for his subject makes his book a worthy companion to the best accounts of Einstein's life and scientific contribution. In addition to being profound, what sets this book apart from others is not playing down the rebellious site of Einstein's personality. Passions of the injustice defiant Einstein shine through the pages of this outstanding work.

Not for Single Mothers by Choice.......2006-12-29
This book is good for some situations, but it is not appropriate for planned single parent families, i.e. through donor insemination or adoption. More specifically, it is designed for talking about why the man who fathered you is not here, not for talking about why I chose to start a family with you without a father.
Finally a book about my family.......2004-02-28
This is a wonderful book for those whose children's fathers are not in their life. This book will help you and your child talk about this issue, they will most likely have questions for you after you finish. Just be prepared to answer them. This book helps children realize that they are not the only one's around who do not have a daddy active in their lives.
my daughters favorite.......2002-04-25
If you are a single mom or dad raising your child alone this book will definitely be helpful for both of you.
It is my daughters favourite book for bed time reading. Written in such a simple manner it was easy for me to simultaniously translate and make it interesting in my language. It gave her a feeling that she is not the only kid living alone with mommy and gave her courage to ask more detailed questions while listening.
The sections for adults helped me more then all the other books written exclusively for single moms and dads.
If you are not certain, buy the book and will not regret it.
DO I HAVE A DADDY?.......2001-05-01
Jessica Reid English 385-4 Dr. Michelle Martin April 13, 2001 Critical Reflection # 3 Lindsay, Jeanne. Do I Have a Daddy? Buena Park, CA: Morning Glory Press, 2000. Tsujimoto, Aileen. "Where are the Mothers?" The Alan Review, Volume 25.1, (1997): 1-2. Do I Have a Daddy is an honest and sensitive story about the child of a single mother. While playing house, Erik is prompted by a questioning friend to ask his mother if he has a daddy. She tells him that he had a daddy in the beginning but that he left. She further explains that some parents get married and take care of their children together, but that she and Erik's father never married because they were so young. Erik's mother emphasizes how much she wanted him and how excited his daddy was when he was born. The story ends with the boy's mother reminding him of the important role his uncle and grandfather play in his life. The text is written in a positive and nurturing manner, and lets children know that there are many different types of family situations. An informative section for single parents on ways they can deal with this issue follows the story. In this day and age, many children are faced with the challenges of single parent families, and the book Do I Have a Daddy is a wonderful book for preschool age children to early school age children to cope with the situation better. The article by Tsujimoto, "Where are the Mothers" shows a relationship between children and their parents, not only fathers but mothers as well. It also stresses how important is to overcome the difficulties, and also how important it is to regain the ability to survive through difficult situations. Lindsay takes this idea to another level in the book Do I Have a Daddy. She emphasizes a tremendous question in a simple and relevant manner, which is easy for the preschool age child to understand. The use of big, bold words is easy and familiar to the young child who is just beginning to read. The illustrations are somewhat stiff and amateurish, but do an adequate job of visualizing the text for young children. Few topics are so difficult to discuss with children than the reality of a divorce, and yet more children face this problem than any other. Finding the right words to explain the changes in their world can never be easy, but the simple fact is the majority (over 50%) of children in the United States come from a family with at least one divorced parent. This book helps kids with absent, deceased, and unknown dads talk about and deal with this difficult situation. The story serves as a conversation starter and can be adapted to meet a child's specific needs. Parents learn the importance of being honest while allowing their children to retain a positive view of the absent parent. This book should have a place in libraries, counselors' offices, and social wor
A great book for single parents and their kids........2000-02-08
When his friend Jennifer taunts him with his not having a daddy, Erik goes to his mother and asks her why he doesn't have a father. Erik's mother explains the, like all children, Erik has a daddy but that she and his father never married. His father went away soon after Erik was born. But, she also tells him, "The important thing is I'm here for you." The presence of fatherless children is pervasive in our schools and communities. Do I Have A Daddy? is a sensitively portrayed story that young single parents and caregivers can use to help explain this critically important and emotionally laden issue with young boys and girls growing up with a never-married parent and the totally absent father. Do I Have A Daddy? is also available in hardcover.

Sonoma County's Jimtown Store, a country market that was dilapidated until it was bought and renovated by Carrie Brown and John Werner in 1987, now serves uniquely good food to locals and visitors alike. Brown and Werner's The Jimtown Store Cookbook, written with Michael McLaughlin, offers 130 of Jimtown's best recipes--robust yet sophisticated dishes that range from Pumpkin Chipotle Soup and Paella Salad with Seared Tuna and Shellfish to Maple-Glazed Meat Loaf and Duck and Olive Ragout with Buttered Noodles. The store also has committed itself to local food producers, and their products help define Jimtown's globe-spanning yet all-American cuisine. This is a truly accomplished blend, and readers will find a ready supply of tantalizing recipes for everyday and special-occasion eating.
Brown and Werner first spotted Jimtown on the Fourth of July, so it's only fitting that they've developed a mouthwatering barbecue repertoire, with many accompanying sauces, condiments, pickles, and relishes. These signature items include Romesco Sauce and Lupe's Tomatillo Salsa; a number of these are fitting accompaniments to dishes like Grilled Fish Tacos, Roast Pork Loin with Bacon and Rosemary, and Grilled Chicken Breasts with Herbed Honey Butter. Other Jimtown specialties include sandwiches like roast beef with horseradish sauce and desserts such as Bittersweet Chocolate Pinwheel Cake and Buttermilk Pie. With the purveyors' cooking tips and menus for entertaining, the book, like the store, rewards digging into. --Arthur Boehm
Book Description
One sunny summer day in 1987, Carrie Brown and John Werner happened on Jimtown, an abandoned country store in northern California. Founded more than 100 years earlier, the Jimtown Store had held fast to its original building and its old-fashioned charm. Enchanted by its possibilities, Carrie and John decided to turn Jimtown into a new kind of country store: a gathering place for people to share down-to-earth, honest food in a beautiful setting.
The new Jimtown quickly became a favorite, offering exceptional main courses, soups, salads, sandwiches, sweets, and breakfast goods, all made from fresh local produce. Now everyone can enjoy the dishes that have made Jimtown so popular, faithfully recorded by Michael McLaughlin, who collaborated on the legendary Silver Palate cookbooks. Each of the more than 135 recipes blends time-honored simplicity with updated flavors and a modern-day appreciation of quality ingredients. From sophisticated starters such as Crisp Grilled Dates with Manchego and Bacon to their famous Pan-Fried Petaluma Duck Burgers to such homey desserts as the delicious Buttermilk Pie, the recipes are all accessible and imaginative. Unencumbered by national boundaries, The Jimtown Store Cookbook offers a tasty bazaar of international food. Also included are cooking tips, menus for entertaining, and as a welcome bonus, colorful profiles of local vendors. So invite the Jimtown spirit into your home and enjoy the bounties of a very special country store.

My new favorite.......2002-08-20
This has quickly become the cookbook I turn to most often (and I have hundreds of them). Everything I've tried has been so flavorful and so easy to pull off. The roasted figs and Indian cashews are now a cocktail party staple (and I keep getting calls for the recipe). Same goes for the cheese and pecan crackers. The bourbon-marinaded steak has made me a much more frequent meat-eater. And just this past weekend I made the incredibly easy buttermilk pie, to much fanfare. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. It's OUTSTANDING.
Seasonal best--all year long........2002-05-09
From a small-town country store in the Northern California wine region, comes a great collection of recipes and entertaining ideas using a variety of seasonal products. Authors Carrie Brown and John Werner (with a wonderful assist from cookbook pro Michael McLaughlin) have compiled the very best of seasonal recipes and menu ideas used in the Jimtown Store and its catering business. The recipes are clear and easy to follow (though I wish that the publisher had worked harder to print the COMPLETE recipe on 1 or 2 facing pages--flipping the page in the middle of food prep is a real hassle!). Overall, though, it is a nicely written volume, which provides ideas for springtime suppers, autumn tailgate parties, Fourth of July barbecues, as well as holiday meals. There is an extensive chapter on salads of all sorts, plus another on sauces, condiments, and relishes, just to give us a few new twists on some old stand-by themes. There are some great weekend ideas in the chapter entitled Breakfast Baking. I've already made the maple-glazed meatloaf for dinner (leftovers make terrific sandwiches), and am now planning Grilled Steak with Backyard Bourbon Marinade as well as Apple-Buttermilk Slaw for some weekend lunch guests. Just in time for summer entertaining, this book is destined to become a year-round classic in my kitchen!
Jimtown takes the cake!.......2002-04-19
One of those unique cookbooks where you'll want to make every recipe, and where you'll actually be able to. Jimtown's style is unfussy, focused on flavor and experience. These recipes mix old and new, national and international cuisine with witty and informative writing. I'm busy working my way through making the recipes and haven't had a dud yet!
