Cattle Prod for Parents at War.......2005-05-28
I gave this book to my daughter in the second year of my divorce. Her eyes lit up as if she saw her face in the mirror
for the first time. Here was an experience she could relate to
and something that she finally might fix. Of the 185 points made I asked her to circle the ones that I wasn't doing right or was guilty of. We talked about those in detail. This book is a gift of hope to children of divorce everywhere, trapped in the roiling tide of their parents' creation.
Dear Mom and Dad, What kids of Divorce really want to say..........2001-10-22
This is one of the greatest tools to help your kids survive divorce. You can read the entire book in probably 20 minutes. When emotions are running wild and you're not thinking clearly, this book helps you see things through your childrens eyes. Helps you not say things or do things that you will regret later!
Buy two copies, one for each parent and agree that you will follow the 10 commandments! Good luck.
This book was a communication vehicle for all of us........2000-11-18
I will be entering a family of 3, father and two daughters. He has custody, the girls have visitation with their mother. The children are 6 and 9, and there are still a lot of issues they have, emotional and mental stress if you will. Confusion also. This book was given to the oldest daughter and we asked her to write down the points that she could relate to. It was like looking through a window into her soul. A lot of these issues dealt with feelings that she couldn't put into words herself and she is starting to see that she has the right to be a healthy child. And it helps that she doesn't have to say anything to either parent and hurt their feelings. The issues are taken with her to her counselor and discussed, and she is on a good path again. It has been amazing.
A book that both divorced parents and children should read!.......1999-05-12
I am a child of divorced parents, and I have two younger siblings that live with our mom. Even though I am an adult, I find myself in awkward situations when I visit my parents. I have often explained to my parents how these awkward situations affect me, but I stress how this is affecting my younger siblings. This book has clarified my ideas about the environment that my siblings and I should not have to accept. After reading this book, I immediately bought two extra copies and sent them to my mom and dad. Hopefully, since Gillian Rothchild is not only a professional, but also a parent, my parents will get the hint!
My ex and I actually agree-This book is a kids' life saver........1999-03-21
This is the first book I have read that has helped my ex and I learn to focus on our kids. We never realized, until we read this book, how destructive our behavior can be on our children. This book is the perfect divorced parenting book and has opened our eyes to the effects of both of our behaviors. We are trying our best every day to read and reread this book and make sure we improve our parenting skills and help our children lead different, but happier lives. This book is a wonderful eye-opener.

Joy Knows Introduction are not Always Easy.......2005-05-01
This is one of Joy Berry's "Survival Series for Kids" books and I have to confess that my son Devon and I like them all. I've had them in storage for years, way before Devon was a twinkle in my eye, or my gal Sara's, and I'm glad I saved them.
In this book Ms. Berry and illustrator Bartholomew, with your help, will teach your child a little bit about how to act around somebody new. Introductions aren't alway easy and what to say afterwards can be a bit tricky as well, even for big people. Yes, I have to admit I've learned a thing or two from this book myself. You child will learn how to ask and answer question, how to accept a gift graciously and so much more about how to get along with others. This is just one fine little book for your child to grow up with.
Though this book was written over twenty years ago, it still stands up. The excellent comic book type illustrations will keep your child interested as you read along with him or her. And for the life of me I don't know why these books are not easier to get. Joy Berry is good for children, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. If you can get a hold of her books and share them with your child, you'll both be better for it.

Midwest Book Review
Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel delicately mixes fiction and history to tell the story of an American air corpsman during World War II. His precious letters enhance a grand book deserving warm appreciation. People from my hometown will be as moved and fascinated as many Americans who will, no doubt, eagerly read it.

Customer Reviews:
Anthony Carlino.......2007-01-28
A beautifully written story, Dear Mom, Dad and Ethel shows us how, in the face of war's uncertainty, man naturally seeks to form and sustain relationships, and savors them all the more. A timely piece.
Technically Fiction but Mostly True.......2007-01-24
I am the surviving co-author of Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel: World War II through the Eyes of a Radio Man. Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel combines wartime letters, a love story, and six years of historical research. It is based on the experiences of my late father and co-author, Eli Ellison, who was an air corps radio truck operator in the 327th Fighter Control Squadron in Western Europe from 1943 to 1945.
A previously posted review, subsequently deleted for other reasons, indicated that the reviewer thought Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel was non-fiction. It's hard to see how she could have reached that conclusion. The cover image at the top of the main page clearly indicates that it is "a novel." A review posted by Midwest Book Review says that Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel "blends fiction and history." An endorsement by Belgian historian Jacques Wynants in the Editorial Reviews Section notes that Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel "mixes fiction and history." Finally, the word "Fiction" prominently appears on the back cover of Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel.
That being said, Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel is about 90 percent true. The wartime correspondence in Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel was transcribed from original V-mail letters written by my father to his parents and sister Ethel while he was overseas. Most of the remaining text is a synthesis of my father's strongest memories, library research, research of trusted historical websites, and considerable material provided by Mr. Wynants and other authorities. Additional sources and consultants are given due credit in the Preface. Over 35 pages of endnotes and references appear after the main text. In addition, there are nine pages of wartime photographs provided by my father, The Imperial War Museum in London, and Belgian sources. Two images of original V-mail letters in my father's handwriting, with army censor's stamp visible, are included in the book's photographic section.
Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel could not be told as non-fiction because there were some factual gaps in my father's memories, and we wanted to protect the anonymity of certain people. Some names, ranks, and/or physical descriptions were changed. However, the overwhelming majority of events depicted in Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel actually occurred.
The plot summary of Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel appears below. The real-life Eli Ellison was the model for the Don Quix character.
PLOT SUMMARY
On October 7, l942, Don Quix enlists in the Air Corps. He's slated to be an aerial gunner, but his flying dreams are shattered when he's caught AWOL with buddy Ken Jackson. Don manages to become a radio truck supervisor in a fighter control squadron while Ken goes to a demolition unit.
As an army engineer, Ken barely survives D-Day on Normandy's "Bloody Omaha." During a baseball game in a French forest, Don moves his head slightly, saving himself from a sniper's bullet.
Arriving in Verviers, Belgium in September 1944, Don and his fellow radio men endure frequent buzz bomb attacks. Due to a miscalculation in army strategy, they find themselves on the front lines during the Battle of the Bulge.
Don's reunion with Ken, now a tech sergeant with a bomb disposal outfit, is marred by tragedy, dampening Don's torrid love affair with beautiful seamstress Denise Vervier. Denise's husband, sent to a forced labor camp in 1940, is presumed dead. When he unexpectedly returns, Don and Denise face a heartbreaking choice.
Recommended, great read!.......2005-10-10
This book is a treasure. With the numbers of this generation (my parent's generation) dwindling before our eyes, the importance of books such as this which capture the mind set and feelings of this era cannot be over-emphasized. A special thank you to the author and to Mom, Dad and Ethel! Read it, you will not be disappointed!!!
Follows a would-be air gunner as his hopes are broken one by one.......2005-08-13
Dear Mom, Dad & Ethel: World War II through the Eyes of a Radio Man is a novel that blends fiction and history. Set during the deadly battles near the end of World War II, it follows a would-be air gunner as his hopes are broken one by one. When caught AWOL with a friend, his military ambitions are reduced to being a radio truck driver. In Belgium of 1944, he experiences tragedy, and falls in love with a beautiful seamstress whose husband was sent to a forced labor camp in 1940 and presumed dead - then unexpectedly returns alive, forcing a heartbreaking choice. A handful of black-and-white photographs enhance the vivid story, brought to realistic life through the memories of veteran and co-author Eli Ellison, and collaboratively enhanced with the skills of his son, attorney, reporter, and co-author Mark Stuart Ellison.

Customer Reviews:
This book covers it all.......2007-08-25
As the spouse of an internet-porn addict, this book explained exactly how I felt and helped me to understand how my spouse felt when he was trapped in the Net. The best part about this book is the explanation of how the difficult journey to freedom will be worth more than the temporary and ultimately devastating "high" that users are addicted to. It also shows users how this seemingly harmless pastime can lead users to become someone they don't know or never thought they could become-doing things that stand against their own moral standards. It is brilliant.
Excellent Resource.......2007-05-29
This is a great resource for people dealing with online sexual compulsive addictions. Whether its you or someone you love, this book helps navigate through the confusion associated with the addictive behaviors. Many books just touch on the subject, but this one really focuses solely on the topic. It covers everything from diagnosis to recovery. Patrick Carnes is a straight forward, no nonsense Dr. The book is well written and a fast read, no need for a PhD in order to understand it. Finally a book that offers hope and relief! I'm greatful to have found it.
Excellent information; not enough to fight addiction.......2007-03-09
This is a fantastic book that takes the reader into a detailed explanatation of what this addiction really is. Mr. Carnes explains the factors and processes that affect the addict by also giving examples of behavior and describing patient's stories. For those trying to get a more comprehensive understanding of the addiction as well as the issues that prevent an addict from freeing him or herself of it, this book is excellent.
Just one note of caution: As much as this book as well as others by the same author are great resources, they are not enough. As with every addiction, there is a "cleansing" process that must be followed, and should be guided under the supervision of an experienced professional. Also, people in this addiction should seek a support group, such as the SLAA.
Help With Online Pornography Addiction.......2007-01-21
This book is up-to-date on a topic that until more recently went unrecognized as problematic. It can be beneficial for professionals working with a client population that participates in a variety of compulsive or addictive online sexual behaviors and who would like to reduce or eliminate these compulsions and addictive behaviors. It can also be recommended to clients for their own use. It helps in determining if a problem exists with use of a screening test, how to set up healthy boundaries, and help with relapse prevention. It can be especially beneficial when paired with a workbook on breaking free of compulsive online sexual behaviors. This book, by reputable authors, provides information & help designed especially for this population and for professionals attempting to help.
Good book, terrible problem........2005-11-18
This is a very useful book if you have a problem, or even think you might, with regard to compulsively searching for and/or using internet porn, chat rooms, etc.
I would also like to mention, in light of the fact that one of the authors, David Delmonico,Ph.D., lives here in Pittsburgh, that there is an active SLAA (Sex & Love Addicts Anonymous) that can help individuals break this addiction and find a new, happier, healthier way of living. It can be contacted through http://www.wpa-slaa.org
Readers in other areas can contact Fellowship Wide Services at [...]
To everyone reading this now, I'd just like to leave with the thought that life CAN get better. And you don't have to try and change for the rest of your life. You only have to try to do better for today....

Book Description
As Internet usage has exploded in recent years, so has the prevalence of compulsive online sexual behavior-a problem first addressed five years ago by Patrick Carnes and coauthors of the breakthrough book, In The Shadows of the Net. Updated with the latest information, trends, and developments, the second edition equips readers with specific strategies for recognizing and changing compulsive sexual behaviors. Personal stories reveal how desperate life can become for online sex addicts-divorce, career loss, and financial ruin are common outcomes. More importantly the authors set forth a path for breaking free from compulsive online sexual behavior and sustaining lifelong recovery.
Book Description
Jane Austen wrote her novels in the midst of a large and sociable family. Brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, friends and acquaintances were always coming and going, which offered numerous occasions for convivial eating and drinking. One of Jane’s dearest friends, Martha Lloyd, lived with the family for many years and recorded in her “Household Book” over 100 recipes enjoyed by the Austens. A selection of this family fare, now thoroughly tested and modernized for today’s cooks, is recreated here, together with some of the more sophisticated dishes which Jane and her characters would have enjoyed at balls, picnics, and supper parties. A fascinating introduction describes Jane’s own interest in food, drawing upon both the novels and her letters, and explains the social conventions of shopping, eating, and entertaining in late Georgian and Regency England. The book is illustrated throughout with delightful contemporary line drawings, prints, and watercolours.
Authentic recipes, modernized for today’s cooks, include:
• Buttered Prawns
• Wine-Roasted Gammon and Pigeon Pie
• Broil’d Eggs
• White Soup and Salmagundy
• Pyramid Creams
• Martha’s Almond Cheesecakes
Customer Reviews:
Nice little introduction to Jane Austen's food and culture.......2005-11-12
This is a lovely and shortish introduction to cooking and culture of eating and entertaining for the late Georgian period when Austen was alive. I loved the fact that this was about cooking and eating rather than some of the less universally approachable subjects (letters, literary criticism). Maggie Black and Deidre Le Faye have both written Jane Austen style and culture type books before so both understand the period and are able to draw on a large resource of appropriate information.
The introduction is very much about how people ate - what was available, how it got to houses, and why this was so. There is some division by class (upper class, middle class and lower class are all discussed) but also the divisions by Geography - whether coastal with access to fresh fish, or inland - how food was transported, and even in terms of access to market towns. Even 5 miles away was almost impossible for those trying to get up a dinner from 'scratch' so to speak if someone was coming around.
The introduction also talks about the types of food and dishes which were eaten, and that the whole culture of dining was completely different. Not only were meal times different, but how they dined. The explanations are simple and there is good use of quoted material throughout, the diaries and letters of the time providing a strong and occassionally humourous voice.
Where possible leFaye and Black have used diaries and 'receipts' from Austen's friends and family and point out that in the days before recipe books were published these books of receipts would be handed down from mother to daughter and one family's speciality would be renowned - they were truly heirlooms.
The last section of the book is a collection of recipes - these are taken from books of reciepts. The original receipt is usually fairly interpretative, that is the measurements are not generally noted, nor how to put them together or cook them. So there has been experimentation and the recipe is re-written with the details put in. These essentail details would have been handed down in a practical manner, but in the days before temperature gauges you would have needed to rely on simple temperature variations, quick, moderate and slow oven to dictate just when to cook it.
Most of these recipes are actually very useable for today - they don't have many potted meats, but mostly roasted meats, cakes, egg dishes and still room crafts. There are some things we dont' see these days like Syllabub - which is quite tasty
There are other books of this kind around - Margeretta Ackworth's cookbook for instance, which is interesting too - but I would recommend this is a good modern cookbook and an interesting historical look at the culture of food in this period.
Fun and Entertaining!!.......2005-10-14
If you call yourself a Janeite then you must have this book! It is a great recipe book from the period with many that can be easily reproduced in your own kitchen! (How better to experience the times than to try to recreate a touch of it?) The commentary is interesting and useful and each author, I find, sheds some light on the life and times of Jane in a way that no one else has quite managed, and Ms. Black is no exception. I am just beginning my culinary jaunts using recipes from this book, and I have already highlighted a great deal of "Must tries". If you like cooking, experimenting in your kitchen, vintage recipes, or JA herself, you will truly appreciate this book!

(A Regency Romance)
A must for Jane Austen fans!.......2000-07-20
While this cookbook may not be exactly suited to the demands of every day dinner making, it does serve as a great lesson in early 19th century custom and way of life. The recipes it contains are fun as well as elegant, and many of them are taken right from the pages of EMMA, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and the rest of the Austen classics. Most of the ingredients are simple and relatively easy to find, and you'll find that making Mrs. Norris' Strawberry Creme Pudding is worth every effort. So, put on some Madrigal music, don a linen frock and your best English country accent and fall into the real world of Austen-- as only food can create it!

Book Description
One of the greatest writers of all time, Jane Austen drew upon her domestic culture to color her works. Food is central to her novels, just as it was to everyday life in Austen's England. And just as her fiction continues to captivate modern audiences, her world of breakfasts and banquets captures the imagination of contemporary readers. Many of her fans will enjoy recreating the meals she describes in her novels, while high school students will similarly gain greater appreciation for her works by learning about her food culture. Through more than 200 recipes, this book transports readers to Jane Austen's England and brings her world to contemporary kitchens. The book begins with some introductory chapters on cooking and eating in Austen's world. It then presents chapters on broad categories of food, such as beef and veal, seafood, pastries and sweets, and beverages. Each chapter includes extracts from Austen's works and from cookbooks of her period, accompanied by easy-to-follow modernized recipes. Some of these are for relatively common dishes, such as:
Roast Beef
Roast Pork Loin
Roast Chicken
Apple Pie
And more. Others are for more exotic meals, such as:
Fricasseed Tripe
Neat's Tongue
Fried Cowheel and Onion
Mutton Hash
