5 out of 5 stars Mine To Keep.......2004-01-27

Mine To Keep is an interesting story about the author's excursion through life. He writes in a way that keeps the reader wanting to continue and not put the book down. His pursuits into different areas of interest are very unique and the lessons he learned on the way are very helpful. The book tells how Edward Denari took advantage of every opportunity to get to the life he wanted. He is obviously a very talented person and through the book gives inspiration. He pretty much says work hard and go for it.

    Book Description

Helen Keller, Time Magazine's woman of the century, reveals her mystical side in this best-selling spiritual autobiography. Writing that her first reading of Emanuel Swedenborg at age fourteen gave her truths that were “to my faculties what light, color and music are to the eye and ear,” she explains how Swedenborg's works sustained her throughout her life.

This new edition includes a foreword by Dorothy Herrmann, author of the acclaimed Helen Keller: A Life, and a new chapter, “Epilogue: My Luminous Universe.”

Helen Keller was born June 27,1980 in Tuscumbia Alabama. Her father was an officer for the Confederate army and her mother was a wife. Keller wasn't born deaf and blind that started once she got older. She was about 14 months olds when she started the Perkins School for the Blind. As she grew older she moved to New York to attend Wright Humason School for the deaf. She went to Radcliff college in 1900 and graduated four years later. She died June 1, 1958 in Eastern Conneticut.

I have always been very impressed with the life of Helen Keller. The difficulties she overcame in life were phenomenal. This book, however, was not interesting to me in the least. I am sad to hear about how she moved away from her traditional Christian background and followed the false teachings of Swedenborg. The book is more about Swedenborg than it is about Helen. It is a strong promotion of Swedenborg's New Church. She claims that he had a special ability from God to find the truth in scripture. The problem is, he like all other cult founders, only takes portions of scripture and uses them out of context. He claimed to have special revelations that no one else ever did. Beware of anyone who makes such claims. According to the book, Helen was pretty silent on her beliefs for the last thirty eight years of her life. I hope she was silent out of her realization that Swedenborg is not master of the truth, but Jesus is the truth instead. I do not recommend you use your time reading this book. It can be spent much more wisely.

5 out of 5 stars Touching Story, Stunning Ideas.......2003-05-10

This book was not only touching because of Helen Keller's fascinating story, but also an uplifting reassurance that life is worth living. Her ideas, those from and about Emanuel Swedenborg, strike me as poingantly true. Helen Keller's unique perspective on the world adds an amazing depth and reality to this work. I absolutly reccomend it for anyone and everyone.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It made me look again at what I believe and see it more clearly. This is a great introduction to the ideas of Emanual Swedenborg and the New Church.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully informative, inspiring reading........2000-06-06

The newly revised and updated second edition of Helen Keller's autobiography originally published in 1927 includes a substantial foreword by Keller biographer Dorothy Herrmann. The deaf, dumb and blind Helen Keller (1880-1968) became an internationally known spokesperson for the blind. Her amazing story of being taught to communicate by Annie Sullivan is very well know. But what is not so well known Keller's faith in the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg whose spiritual vision gave her "the light in my darkness, the voice in my silence". Light In My Darkness is wonderfully informative and inspiring reading and this splendid edition will re-introduce a most remarkable woman to a whole new generation of readers.

I came across Emanuel Swedenborg's name while reading: "The Soul After Death: Contemporary "After-Death" Experiences in the Light of the Orthodox Teaching on the Afterlife by Fr. Seraphim Rose".The Soul After Death: Contemporary "After-Death" Experiences in the Light of the Orthodox Teaching on the Afterlife See my book review.

Swedenborg is one of the first writer's to write about dreams and visions and the afterlife. Dr. Carl Jung Memories, Dreams, Reflections was an avid reader of Swedenborg as were, Raplh Waldo Emerson , Elizabeth Browning and Emmanuel Kant.

Swedenborg spent the last 27 seven years of his life writing his spiritual journey. He is honest, articulate and unafraid to befriend the unconscious.

I am very grateful that Swendenborg's books have been translated to English, they are gems ready to be discovered.

    Book Description

Immanuel Kant's Dreams of a Spirit-Seer, on Emanuel Swedenborg, has mystified readers since its publication in 1766 during Swedenborg's lifetime. Its unusual style and content have led to two opposing interpretations. Most Kant scholars regard the work as a skeptical attack on Swedenborg's mysticism. Others, however, believe that Kant regarded Swedenborg as a serious philosopher and visionary, that Swedenborg had a powerful influence on Kant's mature critical philosophy, and that the book both reveals Kant's profound debt to Swedenborg and conceals that debt behind the mask of irony.

This unique edition includes translations of Kant's other writings on Swedenborg, as well as texts by other writers, illustrating the book's genesis and reception.

Dreams of a Spirit-Seer provides all the documents one needs to assess Kant's most mysterious work.

    5 out of 5 stars Kant's flip side.......2003-02-22

This book is supposed to be the funniest thing that Kant ever wrote, and I really wanted to swim through this book before I tried to figure out what I thought was so funny, but even treading water is a challenge when the current has such a fierce undertow, and the serious "First Part, Which is Dogmatic" demands some consideration, though it ends with the famous prudence which demands "that one make the pattern of one's projects appropriate to one's powers, and if one cannot reasonably attain the great, to restrict oneself to the mediocre." (p. 40). This collection of DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER and other writings from the Swedenborg Foundation Publishers, edited by Gregory R. Johnson, which puts everything that directly related to KANT ON SWEDENBORG into this book, allows a serious consideration of Johnson's view that self-defense was the essence of Kant's approach. Religious controversies had career consequences in those days, and Kant had to show he was laughing "because Swedenborg was a controversial figure. Rumors of interest in Swedenborg would have seriously jeopardized Kant's prospects for academic advancement. This is sufficient motive for him to write a book exculpating himself of the suspicion that he took Swedenborg seriously." (p. xvi). Johnson was writing a doctoral dissertation on Kant the first time he read DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER in 1994, and he cites it in the notes as his COMMENTARY, (Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America, 2001). The acknowledgments are dated January 2003 (p. xxvi) and I feel lucky that I received this book as soon as I did.

I have been thinking about this book for a long time before I wrote this review, since this is the work for which Kant wondered if he had gone too far in jest. My first surprise was that Kant himself (like Hegel, he avoids mentioning names) is not entirely clear about whom he meant to be writing until page 49: "I come now to my purpose, namely, to the writings of my hero." He called his preface "A Prospectus That Promises Very Little for the Project" (p. 3) and the final paragraph of his introduction attempted to make his readers share the situation which he found himself in. "Furthermore, a large work was purchased, and, what is worse still, was read, and such effort should not be wasted. From this originated the present treatise, which, as one flatters oneself, should leave the reader in a state of complete satisfaction, in which the principal part will not be understood, the other not believed, and the remainder laughed at." (p. 4). In general, I approve of the steps Kant took to show a more enlightened view than the journals of his day. The major contrast in Johnson's Introduction is with Johann August Ernesti, who denounced Swedenborg in 1760 as a heretic in his "New Theological Library." For attempting to find meanings in the early books of the Bible which were not obvious, Swedenborg was accused of "pervert[ing] the Sacred Scriptures by the pretense of an inner sense, is in the highest degree worthy of punishment." (p. xxiv). When someone in Wurttemberg published a book on Swedenborg, "at Ernesti's urging, the Wurttemberg government declared the book heretical, confiscated all copies, and even ordered private citizens to surrender their copies on pain of arrest." (p. xxv). When a professor of Theology at Tubingen "urged a more open-minded attitude toward Swedenborg[,] Ernesti responded with yet another scathing review, asserting that Clemm's defense of Oetinger and Swedenborg was an offense that would have been worthy of the death penalty in earlier times." (p. xxv). Kant shows how modern people could be much more philosophical about these things, and though those people are all dead, there is a nice justice in the number of people who are still reading Kant and Swedenborg, even if they hardly know anyone else who does.

The prime point in the Introduction by Johnson resides deep in personal philosophy, that professional philosophers might understand as, "that Kant's mature critical philosophy is best seen as a synthesis of Rousseauian and Swedenborgian elements (the influence of Leibniz and Hume being primarily upon Kant's elaboration of difficult technical questions once his basic vision was already in place). . . . although Kant's vision of the cosmos is more Swedenborgian than Rousseauian, it is Rousseau who provides the essentially pragmatic arguments that allow Kant to embrace the content of Swedenborg's visions but discard his enthusiasm." (p. xx).

The notes are helpful. Only a translator is likely to notice, "Here Kant embraces the idea of general as opposed to particular providence." (p. 161, n. 26). This is what makes Kant a philosopher, "the notion that God governs the universe by framing general laws. Particular providence is the notion that he governs the universe on a case-by-case basis." Swedenborg is so religious that he argues "general providence is meaningless without particular providence." There is more on this in Johnson's (as yet, unpublished) COMMENTARY. Kant [Part I, Second Chapter, Paragraph 3] was talking about connections in the immaterial world, the former connections, before getting trapped where "nothing hinders even the immaterial beings that affect one another through the mediation of matter from also standing in a special and constant association and as immaterial beings always exercising reciprocal influences on one another, so that their relationship mediated by matter is only contingent and rests upon particular divine provision, whereas the former is natural and indissoluble." (p. 16)

I would like to check another translation to see if this is even close to what anyone else would think. In 1992, David Walford and Ralf Meerbote had their translation published in Kant, THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY, 1755-1770. "Walford's translation is highly accurate and very readable. Indeed, it would be hard to justify a new translation of DREAMS at all were the Walford translation available in an inexpensive paperback edition." (p. xxiii). It soon might be, if that is what you would rather have.

5 out of 5 stars Kant accepted that our spirit conjoins two worlds........2002-12-10

This work is often described as Kant's most "mysterious". The mystery lies in the fact that here in this treatise the Great Professor of Metaphysics unreservedly admits in the existance of "immaterial natures in the world", i.e. spirits and a spirit world. There is nothing mysterious about this statement, it is just that modern readers refuse to accept it. I've never understood why this should be so hard for some, since Kant's System of critical idealism is perfectly consistent with this view. Kant claimed that we could never know the true nature of the world around us, the true causes of sensations. He always held that there is a real world that we can never accurately know. This real world corresponds with a "spirit world", or if you prefer, a platonic world of Ideals lieing outside of our human perception of time and space. Kant unmistakably states that "We should ... regard the human soul as being conjoined in its present life with two worlds at the same time...." Nothing could be more unambiguous, especially considering his references to the writings of Swedenborg.

I think that this book has been largely ignored because it is just too divergent from the rational empiracism of the modern scientific mind. The scienitfic materialist conveniently ignores the fundamental questions of material "reality" that Kant couldn't ignore. Furthermore, when the Prussian government banned this work it set into motion the series of events that culminated in the profound physical and spiritual disasters of the 20th cetury- and beyond.

It may yet be proven that the ideas in this forgotten book are far more "real" than the modern materialist concensus of reality....

      Book Description

Best known for his focus on the intuitive force within, Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) also anticipated major modern discoveries in mineralogy, psychology, and anatomy. In this succinct and readable collection, Stanley expertly brings the most significant writings from Swedenborg's oeuvre together, showing readers a man who created a hieroglyphic language, reimagined the Genesis story, influenced Blake, Balzac, Strindberg, and Yeats, and authored a number of anonymous works that put the Swedish clergy of his day on high alert. This is the fourth title in the Western Esoteric Masters Series from North Atlantic Books.

      Introduction by Brenda Wineapple

In 1845 Ralph Waldo Emerson began a series of lectures and writings in which he limned six figures who embodied the principles and aspirations of a still-young American republic. Emerson offers timeless meditations on the value of individual greatness, reconnecting readers with the everyday virtues of his “Representative Men”: Plato, in whose writings are contained “the culture of nations”; Emanuel Swedenborg, a “rich discoverer” who strove to unite the scientific and spiritual planes; Michel de Montaigne, “the frankest and honestest of all writers”; William Shakespeare, who “wrote the text of modern life”; Napoleon Bonaparte, who had the “virtues and vices” of common men writ large; and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who “in conversation, in calamity…finds new materials.”

This Modern Library Paperback Classic reflects the author’s corrections for an 1876 reprinting.

      1 out of 5 stars Emerson's 'great man'.......2006-02-20

Great men are those who inspire new great men into being. So Emerson understood in his seven portraits of human greatness. The poet Shakespeare and the philosopher Plato, the skeptic Montaigne and the mystic Swedenborg, the man of the world Napoleon and the writer Goethe.
Of great men he said,"Nature seems to exist for the excellent. The world is upheld by the veracity of good men: they make the earth wholesome. They who lived with them found life glad and nutritious..... We call our children and our lands by their names. Their names are wrought into the verbs of language, their works and effigies are in our houses, and every circumstance of the day recalls an anecdote of them."
It is interesting that of Emerson's great men two would certainly be in question today. Swedenborg does not have the followers in our day that he had in Emerson's. Napoleon today can be considered in these terms only if we are also willing to discuss the horrible aspect of conqueror- great- men and the millions of dead that come with the conquests.
Emerson a sublime argument for his conception of ' the great man', of the unique character who makes a gift to Mankind no one else has or can .

      2 out of 5 stars ripoff.......2002-08-21

this is one of my favorite Emerson works. It opens itself up to so much, talking about his theories of influence, precursing everything from queer theory and gender transitivity to Harold Bloom, and it is a poem, too. It's beautiful. It offers his thoughts on the most diverse materials, gets into the most detail on his Hindu readings, gets very brave in "Swedenborg." But ... for a 165-page book? Delbanco's intro is boring and useless. Don't even READ it before you read the book. It'll be like watching an educational video on yeast infections before watching a porno. The index is a kind of neat feature; it's cool to see how many men are mentioned how many times. For example, the most obvious 'omission' in the book, JESUS, is mentioned only 5 times in the book, but he lurks throughout in so many ways. I love the book, but think the edition is a huge ripoff. However, it is difficult to find all these essays in one volume without buying a "complete works" or something, and they are ALL good and work together as a complete 'book,' one essay building off the prior in subject and time, going from B.C. to the nineteenth century, from Plato to Napoleon and Goethe.

Merck Pharmaceuticals have edited a clear and comprehensive reference for older adults. Dr. Mark Beers begins with the age-old questions: when does a person become old and why does the body change? The remainder of this guide is divided into preventive and active care for self and others. The list of topics is a virtual everything you want to know about aging: nutritional needs, finding a doctor, understanding tests, surgery and rehabilitation, and long term care. More than one hundred specific medical conditions including fractures, constipation, tinnitus, dental disease, and dementia are explained and cross referenced with useful details. Although a clinical explanatory model prevails, non-traditional methods such as acupuncture and homeopathy receive honorable mention. The guide takes an unflinching look at sexuality, end of life decisions, and mistreatment of elderly adults. Other practical c! hapters are devoted to driving dilemmas and navigating the Byzantine financing of health care. This information is punctuated with essays from older adults--including a cheeky Max Sendak cartoon. The essays, along with charts, photos, and illustrations help to lessen the book's encyclopedic tone. Many older adults and the people who care for them will welcome the well-organized format and richly detailed information of this guide. --Barbara Mackoff

3 out of 5 stars Good coverage -- but a little dumbed down........2007-03-26

This seems to be an abridgment of all the material found in the Merck Manual home addition of relevance to aging or typical diseases of aging. It is missing some of the detail, and my guess is that there are better books for a more sophisticated older reader, including the Merck Manual itself. It is printed in relatively large type. There is an enormous quantity of common sensical repetition, such as the trope about "people tend to slow down a bit as they age". This mantra is repeated in one form or another every few pages.

It's one thing to return from a productive foray to the field or stream, but it's something else to know what to do with the bounty you've lugged back with you. Regardless of your culinary skills, Preparing Fish & Wild Game will beguile you into bringing sport to the kitchen as it painlessly turns cooking what you've caught into as exciting an experience as taking it was in the first place.

With more than 100 recipes for fish (Hot and Sour Bass Soup; Lemon-Cucumber Stuffed Trout), big game (Moose Meatballs with Cranberry Barbecue Sauce; Venison Satay with Spicy Peanut Sauce), small game (Sour Cream Rabbit with Herbs; Sherried Squirrel), and birds of all feathers (Sautéed Wood Duck with Balsamic-Date Sauce; Wild Turkey Picatta with Morels; Partridge and Hazelnut Salad), this beautifully illustrated cookbook targets a cuisine that's as adventurous as it is sophisticated. More importantly, it clearly details the techniques necessary both to create these feasts and to preserve what you can't immediately use.

From simple pan-frying, poaching, grilling, and baking to the complexities of whipping up the appropriate stocks and sauces, Preparing takes you by the hand and leads you through the mysteries. Its combination of step-by-step text and accompanying photos also shows--as well as tells--you how to smoke, can, make sausage, clean and store fish, age and dress game, and safely freeze the wild harvest. With a guide like this, the only limit on a fascinating and natural array of flavors will be determined by your facility in the field, or lack of it. --Jeff Silverman

4 out of 5 stars Preparing Fish and Wild Game--Review.......2007-01-26

This book is more than a cookbook. I could call it the bible on Wild Game preparation. Admittedly, not all forms of game common in North America is included. But the book does include the common forms of wild game, big game, and more improtantly, how to clean/dress the meat.

The cleaning/dressing of the meat is included in the back of the book. There are well detailed colour photographs to assist the novice with the steps. Once one has an idea on how to dress game or clean fish, the idea of hunting or fishing becomes more exciting. By properly preparing the meat from the get-go, one has greatly improved the possibility of a truly extraordinary meal preparation. For those who have not had the priveledge of a father or a loved one who could show one "the ropes" on dressing game or cleaning fish, this book is indispensible. For those who have had the priveledge, this book is a great refresher course. This book makes a great gift either way.

The book also includes techniques on how to clean Northern Pike and remove the "Y" bones. These bones are most troubling. Instructions are included for other fresh water fish including bullheads and catfish.

The recipes are first class and include delictable photographs. I have not tried all of the recipes, but just reading what one can do with fish and wild game makes one salivate.

Our grandparents and great grandparents may have eaten this way, but much of this experience has been lost through the generations. One cannot obtain most of these meats at the local grocery store, for instance. After obtaining one's Fish and/or Wild Game, one can have in mind the terrific recipe that he/she will try. This book is a book of fine cuisine, and is by no means "The Road Kill Grill". You even get the per-serving counts of calorie, protein, cholestrol, carbohydrate, etc., not to mention the "Exchanges".

My only problem that I found with this book is the cooking time/temperature for the Canada Goose recipe on Page 190. The 425 is just too high and the 35 minutes is too short. The meat was not done after 35 minutes, and when it was done, it was tough. It tasted great, however, with no "gamey" flavour. I plan to try 325F and 2 hours next time.

Because of this experience, I regret to give this book a "4". I still highly recommend "Preparing Fish and Wild Game" because it is extremely difficult to find such a wealth of knowledge in one place.

We've tried close to half of the recipes in this book, and they are always wonderful! We've never had a bad one. Our friends are always asking us for the fish and venison recipes.

Great resource for skinning and dressing game (especially great for beginners wh want to see photos of where to cut). All the recipes we have tried are excellant. My 12 year old son cooks from this book all the time! If you hunt, you need this!

5 out of 5 stars Wild Game Cooking Made Easier.......2001-01-26

My finance is an avid hunter of game and wild birds, but I'm a complete novice when it comes to cooking it. So I bought this book to help guide me. I think it's both an extraordinary cookbook and a topnotch reference guide, and should be a definite addition to any game cook's library. The photos are wonderful, the recipes are easy to follow, and there's a range of easy, intermediate, and difficult recipes to try. A wide range of game, wild birds, and fish are included, so there's usually a recipe for the type of food you have.
