Lotsa action and good artist!.......2006-01-17
I think this is completely Jimenez illustrated trade. It is thin but it has pace other books missed. Lotsa violence, unnecesarry, though...
Sexcellent!.......2005-10-12
This is a very interesting graphic novel. While slightly thinner than the other trade paperbacks published of The Invisibles, this one packs just as much punch. The artwork, as usual, is STUNNING. Verdict: Difficult to put down.
A 14 year old's review.......2005-07-19
I recently attended Comic-con in San Diego, and bought all of the Invisibles books. I have read three so far. Say you want a revolution, Apocalipstick (which was incredibly confusing yet good), and Bloody Hell in america. I made the mistake of putting the books in the wrong order, So I've actually read books 1,2, and 4. I'm currently on page 105 of Entropy in the U.K.
Aside from that, this book shows great art, great thought provoking writing, and really starts to show character development and action. This book kicks off the more action oriented section of the Invisibles, which in some ways, I find kind of refreshing to the previous confusing misleading storylines (Of course, I did love the first books, "darling").
One great quality of this book is the development of my personal favorite character, Ragged Robin. Robin becomes the leader of the Invisibles, sporting a new leather costume (as opposed to her civilian clothing), and showing that she has potential to be a leader with her quick thinking and psychic abilities.
Grant Morrison is an absolutely brilliant writer, and the art really compliments his wonderful scripts. I look forward to finishing Entropy in the U.K., and reading all of the other Invisibles books....
Frighteningly good........2005-04-12
Morrison is arguably the best comics scribe around today, and thus far Invisibles is probably (still) his masterpiece.
Bloody Hell In America continues in the same vein as the previous story arcs, though this chapter is far more violent and "action packed" than anything we've seen before (as the title implies). These stories were of course written squarely in the Tarantino Era. In the midst of some blood-soaked & carnage-filled pages, even King Mob tells Jolly Roger that he is "beginning to question the already dubious morality of [his] actions". To call the violence "gratuitous" is missing the point.
And I wouldn't call this a good jumping-on point. If you're going to read Invisibles, start at the beginning.
The Invisibles, Book 4: Bloody Hell in America.......2005-03-16
After the release of issue #25 of the Invisibles (collected in Book 3: "Entropy in the UK"), DC/Vertigo halted publication of the series for a few months. During this hiatus, creator/writer Grant Morrison revised his approach to the series. Deciding that the previous volume had been "British" and that the new one would be "American," Morrison abandoned the methodical pace of Volume 1 and filled Volume 2 with nonstop action, sex, and ultraviolence. Some say this new approach was a "watered down" version of the Invisibles, but I say that's hogwash. The stories collected in this book are the cream of the crop, and fulfill all of the promise of the very first issues of the series.
Book 4 collects the first four issues of Volume 2, and the change is immediately noticeable. First and foremost is the return of artist supreme Phil Jimenez. Last seen in Book 3's "Entropy in the UK" arc, Jimenez is probably my favorite artist who ever worked on the series. His art is detailed, clean, precise, and beautifully rendered; everything you could ask for, really. Morrison scored a huge coup when he brought Jimenez on board as the regular artist, something the series never had before. Therefore, there are no drops in artwork quality in this collection, as there were in the previous three trade paperbacks.
Picking up a year after the events at the end of Book 3, Book 4 opens with the Invisibles (King Mob, Dane, Ragged Robin, Lord Fanny, Boy) recouping in upstate New York, residing in the colossal mansion of millionaire Invisible Mason Lang. Lang is an interesting character, a neurotic Bruce Wayne-type who obsesses over the "hidden meanings" of mainstream films. The events depicted at the end of Book 3 nearly killed our favorite Invisibles cell, but now King Mob thinks the team is ready for more action.
Sure enough, Jolly Roger shows up, looking for help. Roger, a lesbian commando who's as deadly as King Mob, is the leader of her own Invisibles cell, and she's the only one who survived an assault on a high-level military base in Arizona. Those expecting "Area 51" shenanigans with little gray aliens will be surprised, because Roger's cell wasn't searching for extraterrestrial life: they were after the cure for AIDS. The government has the cure, has had it for decades, and now Roger wants King Mob's cell to re-infiltrate the base with her and make off with it.
What follows is enough gory action, cross-dimensional warring, masturbation-induced spells, mind control, kinky sex, and redneck-baiting to satisfy even the most jaded of readers. Did I mention the gore? King Mob goes on a kill spree in this book; Morrison claimed he was approaching this "new look" for the Invisibles like a big-budget Hollywood action movie, and he delivers. But beyond the mayhem, there's also some great character development, particularly for Ragged Robin, previously a blank slate. Here we learn that there's more to her than meets the eye: born in 1988 (the story takes place in 1996), Robin is definitely not an 8 year-old, but she offers no answer to this riddle.
There are only two drawbacks to "Bloody Hell in America." One: DC/Vertigo failed to include the last page of issue #4 in the collection. This missing page isn't integral to book; instead, it introduces Takashi, a Japanese scientist who comes to the fore in Book 5, and who has just figured out how to travel in time. Still, it would've been nice to have that page in here.
And the second drawback: Book 4 is rather short. Previous and later paperback collections are much larger, collecting more issues. This book only features 4 issues; this is because DC published it early in Volume 2's run, to capitalize on the title's new look and feel. But that's only a minor drawback; Book 4 makes up for in slam-bang action and thought-provoking ideas what it lacks in size.

Book Description
This book provides a comprehensive look at the air war over Europe during the climactic year of World War II, combining firsthand experience with expert analysis. The centerpiece of the work is a mission-by-mission diary of 1st Lieutenant Richard R. Ayesh, bombadier on a B-17 Flying Fortress, who flew with the 100th Bombardment Group, 13th Combat Wing of the 8th Air Force-the legendary "Bloody 100th." He was a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Croix de Guerre, Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters, and numerous other medals.
This book follows Ayeth's progress from his youth during the Great Depression in Wichita, Kansas, a city which at the time was rapidly becoming the air capital of the nation, to his arrival in England as a Lieutenant in a bomber crew assigned to assault the Third Reich.
Once in Europe, the author provides a comprehensive look at the principles of American daylight strategic bombing, while relaying to the reader the overall military situation on the ground and in the air over Europe just after D-Day. This work is uniquely self-contained and covers all aspects of the Air War in a clear, concise, yet non-technical manner. Topics include photo-reconnaisance, munitions and bomb types, combatant aircraft characteristics, fighter tactics, bomber tactics, bomber formations, strategic target selection, combatant and defensive radars, counter-measures (and counter-counter measures), logistics, ground crews, and air scouts. The author, interweaving his analysis with the urgent firsthand diary of a participant in the Bloody 100th, describes the air war in full fashion, in the process revealing a number of insights. Throughout 35 combat missions, the unaltered combat diary of Lt. Ayesh is presented mission-by-mission, punctuated by tragedy and unbelievable heroism, with explanations and commentary on the significance of the events and actions described en route. The result is one of the most frank and exciting works on the air war over Europe to date.
There is no varnishing of words in this book, either through the diary or the analysis that accompanies it. Instead, after the gallant Lt. Ayesh is followed on his perilous return home in U-boat infested waters, the book assesses the effectiveness of US strategic daylight bombing in crippling and ultimately paralyzing the Nazi war machine. Finally, the complex moral issues raised by area bombing, city bombing and the controversies surrounding them are explored, all with 21st century implications.

Good book for teenagers!.......2000-05-15
The military services spend tens of millions of dollars on advertising to attract young people to their ranks. Supported by school guidance counselors as a prime career option the system enlists hundreds of thousands of low income teens. What happens next? Read this book to understand why such a high proportion of our nation's homeless and mentally ill are veterans. This pocket sized paperback is based on a larger hardcover version called Hell, Healing and Resistance.
Profoundly disturbing.......2000-04-15
This book gave me great insight into the trauma to people's lives as a result of war and the war machine. It is profoundly written and the subject is sensitively handled. I'm sure not everyone will agree with the author's view point, but it sure helped me to have better understanding for the war veterans I come in contact with.

Book Description
The challenge was to train a security force for the Volta River Authority in Ghana. This account tells how Roy Bishop, ill prepared and poorly equipped, came to terms with this adventure, and how the people and the land affected him and gradually changed his knowledge of himself and life. The story illustrates the challenges, trials and amusing incidents throughout the author's stay in Ghana-situations or incidents which today, in the time of the mobile phone, could not have happened, but did in 1986. For those interested in Africa and the activity of private contract men working in this Dark Continent, the story will surely be fascinating. Magic Ju Ju, the poverty of the people, the savagery of some, the loyalty and the friendship of others, make up this collection of tales within the story. This was a lesson in life.

Big Business = Nasty Business.......2006-06-05
I originally pre ordered this book for about $40 and the order got cancelled by mistake - Now its over $100. Unless the book is now 2 1/2 times better, have I got a business plan for any X-Angels, Hell's Angels or wanna-be with a story to snitch. But I think I'll skip this particular over priced self justifying expose.
A good book .......2005-06-23
Peter Paradis the author of this book at the writing of this book was about 35 years of age and spent half his life dealing drugs. At the age of 18 and from a broken home he decides to go with a friend and try living on his own in the process he finds himself hanging out in pool hall where he comes upon the idea to start dealing after seeing other drug dealer setup shop there. As he prospers in the drug trade he hooks up with some guys that lead him to a motorcycle club called the rock machine they being one of the gangs in montreal
It seems kind of ironic that they are called a motorcyle club because for most of the book he explains that being a member of the Rock Machine did not mean that you even had to have a harley as in most motorcycle gangs, also unlike most that are also leather clad the rock machine members had sweaters with their colors and insignia.
The goes from a hangaround to full patch to the point that was really running alot of the gang activity in montreal. It covers alot of the war that was and is going on between the Hells Angels and their associates and the Rock Machine and their associates over the drug trade. The war as described by the author has claimed alot of lives on both sides and by means that they have held nothing back even planning to use some bazookas. I f you followed the news years back occasionally it would be on national news even though it was in Canada.
But as years go and body count rises and along with the stress and the fact he even gets shot 4 times on a attempted hit on his life things begin to change for the author especially in his time of need althoughs he was there for are not there in return when he is looking at a long prison stint. This leads to him becoming a informant which is interesting because his brother was still a full patch when he did so there was a brother on bothsides. He does goes on to explain how they develop a friendship with the Bandidos who eventually absorb them one of the attraction of course was the haterd of the hells angels.
If you red for example Under& Alone then you will probably like this book if you can find it is definitely a fast and interesting read.

Book Description
In 1969, Jon Beckwith and his colleagues succeeded in isolating a gene from the chromosome of a living organism. Announcing this startling achievement at a press conference, Beckwith took the opportunity to issue a public warning about the dangers of genetic engineering. Jon Beckwith's book, the story of a scientific life on the front line, traces one remarkable man's dual commitment to scientific research and social responsibility over the course of a career spanning most of the postwar history of genetics and molecular biology.
A thoroughly engrossing memoir that recounts Beckwith's halting steps toward scientific triumphs--among them, the discovery of the genetic element that turns genes on--as well as his emergence as a world-class political activist, Making Genes, Making Waves is also a compelling history of the major controversies in genetics over the last thirty years. Presenting the science in easily understandable terms, Beckwith describes the dramatic changes that transformed biology between the late 1950s and our day, the growth of the radical science movement in the 1970s, and the personalities involved throughout. He brings to light the differing styles of scientists as well as the different ways in which science is presented within the scientific community and to the public at large. Ranging from the travails of Robert Oppenheimer and the atomic bomb to the Human Genome Project and recent "Science Wars," Beckwith's book provides a sweeping view of science and its social context in the latter half of the twentieth century.

Interesting Reading.......2002-09-06
An intelligent, clearly written book by Harvard microbiologist and social activist Jon Beckwith. He describes his eventful life in science and activism, and makes some interesting points about the nature of science: "the actual practice of science is a human endeavor with the flaws and virtues of any human activity." He emphasizes the importance of ethics in science, and says that scientists and non-scientists must work together for science to help mankind, and not be used unwisely. I knew Beckwith years ago when I lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and wish him well with the book.
Book Description
It happens in an instantsquealing breaks, a ladder that gives way, a pool cue swung in a moment of ragebut the affects of a blunt-force trauma to the head can last a lifetime. One of the more common injuries that can affect cognitive function, mild traumatic brain injury, or MTBI, affects more that half a million Americans each year, and research suggests that as many as 6.5 million Americans are living with the effects of MTBI. For the first time ever, this book assembles facts about MTBI together with a research-based program that readers can use to overcome the disadvantages of traumatic brain injury.
The book addresses the emotional issues that often accompany MTBI, especially anxiety and depression. Readers learn basic self-help strategies to counteract problems that may be caused by the injury. The later chapters discuss the four major domains of cognitive function and ways in which individuals can challenge their limitations and repair specific brain functions. The book concludes with an exploration of the various potential long-term affects of MTBI and the outside resources available to assist readers.
Customer Reviews:
Useful but needs help with guided approach.......2007-06-28
Needs more structural work to assist those with varying degrees of disability. More on "how to use this book" would be useful. For brain injury patients, these is no such thing as giving too much direction, ezpecially for those with minimal tolerance for books and written material. I did not find it possible to attack page 4, for example, and move streadily forward from there. Some sections were beond my limit of understanding and patience. It was sometimes difficult to see why the workbook tackled certain topics.
The workbook approach opens the door to a new type of thinking aboutthe issues that is not available in other publcations today and that is the true value of this book.
The TBI Bible If you have a loved one with TBI you will need this book!.......2006-06-21
We got the book shortly after our son's head injury and have not put it down since. The book has sections on every aspect of head injury and guides you through the process of recovery. The exercises were a little challenging but eventually manageable. If you have a loved one with a head injury this book is a must.
Hope and Healing.......2005-03-29
This book is a great resource for family, friends, caregivers, and patients suffering from mild traumatic brain injury. The easy to read text helps the reader focus on the causes and effects of brain injury. It offers a positive, comprehensive, realistic approach to repairing and coping with physical, mental and emotional effects of brain injury. A self-help section is available and allows the patient the opportunity to be involved in his own recovery. I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking hope and or healing from mild traumatic brain injury.
Must Have.......2005-03-24
If your dealing with anyone in your life with a brain injury, this book is for you. It helped us understand what was going on and the exercises were a good tool to help in the recovery process. I am so thankfully I found this book. And would highly recommend it to everyone.
It's so nice to know..........2005-02-17
I would just like to say that it's so nice to know that there is more information on brain injuries out there. Not many people know anything about brain injury and even when you try to explain it to someone, they think you're making it up. I felt like this book got into my head and knew exactly what was going on with me. I highly recommend this wonderful book for someone with a brain injury but for people who know someone with brain injury.

Los Barrios Family Cookbook.......2007-04-06
I like this cookbook very much. I look forward to use it in the future.
Yum Yum Give Me Some & Make it Tasty Healthy.......2007-04-04
I love this restuarant and it's always packed Monday thru Friday, I was living in Alexandria Virginia when the book came out being a San Antonian I had to get it little did I know it would change the traditional family way of making Texican (Texas Style Mexican Food). I now and will always cherish this book substitutes cabbage for tradition lettuce that is a very healthy twist and thats just one of many examples of the healthy twists in this book. If you are a vegan this book could really help you put some pazzaz in your food with some simple substitutions. One of my favorite dishes in the restuarant is Green Enchiladas made with tomatillos and that great recipe is in here just wish my cooking skills were up to the task. I would definetly give this as a gift. San Antonio is not all about the RiverWalk take some time out of the downtown area when visiting and do what the natives do eat at Los Barrios.
Excellent if its what you're looking for..........2006-07-03
I was looking for a cookbook that dealt in the basics (I had never prepared a poblano pepper for roasting before), but that also had some interesting dishes. I have never been to the restaurant so I didn't have anything to compare my results to ( not that I should anyway) and I wanted something that had a good feel to it.
Overall, I am impressed with the book for someone like myself, new to cooking actual meals, and have already created homemade corn tortillas, pico de gallo, eggs mexicana and the chicken breasts in creamy poblano sauce. My family seems pleased with the results (my tortillas were a bit thick), and I'm going to continue to use the book until I outgrow it (it may be a while).
If you are a more experienced cook, especially in Mexican or Tex-Mex dishes, then this may be a little simple for you, but if you are fairly new to the cuisine then please consider it.
Have you made nachos as a family meal but not your own pico de gallo? Then this is your book.
A Waste of Money.......2006-03-23
Robb Walsh's book is so much better! This does just seem to have been an attempt to capitalize on this family's moment in the limellight. Very dissapointing, unfortunately.
Some background info helps..........2006-01-19
There's a reason why this is a Tex-mex cookbook from San Antonio, and not "authentic mexican cuisine" from Guadalajara. Tex-mex combines some of the great meals you can get south of the border with American ingredients (such as American & velveeta). Let's face it, these products melt better. So I'd stay away from this cookbook if you're looking for Mexican food instead of Tex-mex.
Also, one should keep in mind that it's not the authors back in the kitchen, and that the food has to be prepared back there to feed the hundreds of people that go through the restaurants everyday. So this will be a factor when you go to fix this in your kitchen. If you want food from Los Barrios, I'd say to go to one of the restaurants. But if you want help creating your own, the cookbook is a great place to start!
Oh, and if you like the Chimichurri, ask anyone at either of the restaurants and they'll tell you it's a secret family recipe. (But if you really want a recipe for Chimichurri, search online. That's how my aunt got her recipe.)
