Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great introductory book to high tech business issues.......2000-01-19

I read this book for my high tech tax class in law school, and unlike most of my required reading, this book was absolutely fabulous. It provides an introduction to a wide range of issues facing high tech business, ranging from lawsuits to taxation to R&D. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out in high tech business, regardless of in what capacity.

5 out of 5 stars Daryl Hatano, Vice President, Semiconductor Industry Assn........1999-04-03

Cliff Jernigan has played an active role in shaping the government policies that contributed to the success of the U.S. semiconductor industry - now America's largest manufacturing sector. In "Beyond High Tech Survival" Mr. Jernigan offers practical advice in a highly readable primer on finding the opportunities from, and avoiding the pitfalls of, industry-government interactions. This book is THE source of information on the public policy impacts on high tech manufacturing, marketing, R&D, and investments. It is a must read for anyone with a stake in industry-government relations -- which is everyone, from corporate executives to political science students, and from local planning commissioners to members of Congress.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice on the P&L impact of government policy.......1999-02-11

Many companies, particularly in the high tech sector, don't appreciate how important government policy can be to their profits. These companies are frequently surprised when new government rules change the competitive landscape. Worse yet, they never realize they missed out on potential profits that could have been achieved by taking advantage of government programs that their taxes helped fund. Cliff Jernigan's book, Beyond High Tech Survival, sets out the risks and opportunities that can be achieved from government policies and programs. Ways to reduce taxes, take advantage of government incentives and open foreign markets, are just some of the possible opportunities assessed. Advice on avoiding pitfalls, such as piracy of intellectual property, legal problems from violating export control or sexual harassment laws, and frivolous security lawsuits, is clearly set out. Beyond High Tech Survival is an easy read and jargon free, and well indexed to help the busy executive find what is needed. Jernigan has had long experience in tax, trade and legal issues, and this practical book will be a good reference source for busy executives.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended for policy makers and CEOs........1999-02-06

Jernigan has compiled a highly readable agenda for both public policy makers and corporate executives . Public policy left unattended can adversely affect corporate profits and the wise executive pays attention to Federal, state, and local issues just as they pay attention to research and development, production, and marketing.

He covers the obvious issues of tax policy, and international trade but also addresses the emerging issues of shareholder lawsuits and intellectual property rights. This comprehensive book covers over 30 significant policies and is a great check list of how government actions effect businesses today.

I recommend this book for the public policy maker who needs an up to date primer on the issues facing high-tech companies. I also recommend this book for corporate executives who can recite every step in how to build a 450 mhz chip but pale at the idea of entering the political arena.

Jernigan makes the case that the savvy executive gets involved.

5 out of 5 stars Author's coverage of business challenge in a global economy........1999-01-27

Cliff Jernigan is a long-time member of Tax Executives Institute, and in his book, he does what TEI members do best: He shares his insights and experiences. His review of the major challenges faced by high-tech companies and other businesses is comprehensive and comprehensible. From the research tax credit to the alternative minimum tax, from capital gains to the independent contractor issue, Cliff does an excellent job of presenting complicated topics in a clear and concise way. I found the coverage of overseas operations and plant site location to be both interesting and informative. Whether you are a tax executive, a member of senior management, or a government official, this book provides much grist for mill.

      Book Description

Trade secrets are valuable. Executives know that, but do they also know how easily they can be stolen? Marketing expert Michael Budden thinks not. The departure of unhappy employees, sabotage by current employees, or simply the carelessness of managers unmindful of the risks or unaware of the protection available to them can be hazardous to the security of essential corporate information. Now, however, there is the Uniform Trade Secrets Act. Prevalent in most states with enactment in others almost certain, the Act offers the protection executives need providing they have taken reasonable steps on their own before seeking redress under its provisions. In this readable text, Budden explains the law, how it works, and what executives must do to avail themselves of it. He includes revealing case studies for further guidance and to aid executives in their corporate strategic planning. An essential resource for people with management responsibilities in almost all organizations, and a useful quick refresher for their legal advisers. Losses to organizations through trade secret misappropriations cost billions of dollars annually. No industry is immune. Trade secrets take many forms; recipes, formulas, customer lists, market research results, proprietary processes, and product development secrets are a few examples. Under the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, however, companies that have created plans and procedures to guard against such losses before they occur can now seek injunctive relief and collect monetary awards for damages. Dr. Budden introduces readers to the Act and the jurisdictions that have adopted it, and then explains what executives must do to create the necessary precondition of establishing a climate of confidentiality, including the use of non-compete covenants, and nondisclosure and noncompetition contracts. He goes on to lay out the sort of information that must be protected and how to appraise its value and the nature of its secrecy. Following up with advice on developing a plan of action to protect trade secrets, he concludes with a thoughtful discussion of the legal avenues and alternatives that executives can take and an outline of all the trade secrets protections the Act makes available.

                    Description:
This study investigates the relation between discretionary accounting choices and executive compensation in Japanese firms. The results show that the use of discretionary accruals increases executive compensation. The analyses also show that firm managers receiving no bonus adopt income-decreasing accruals and extraordinary items. In particular, evidence shows that negative extraordinary items are strongly associated with no bonus payment. Finally, the research indicates that the association between discretionary accruals and executive bonus varies depending upon the circumstances of the firm. This study contributes to the literature on earnings management from an international comparative perspective since most previous studies on earnings management and executive compensation have focused on U.S. firms.

Writer Buronson found a hit with his bloody, postapocalyptic action-adventure Fist of the North Star. Artist Ryoichi Ikegami has seen success with realistic, gritty books like Crying Freeman. But together they achieved their greatest heights with the masterful Japanese comics novel Sanctuary. Now they have teamed for a second series, and by the look of the first volume, the intense depictions of crime, corruption, and mystery are back. Mayo is a cool, disinterested killer for hire, but the real reason he charges only $5 for a hit is a secret. It seems that teenage prostitute Shion has a secret too--one that even she doesn't know. Now that that Mayo has screwed over the local crime syndicate by taking pity on Shion and her mother, they are both on the run from the criminals, a murderous cop, and their own secrets. --Jim Pascoe

3 out of 5 stars If you like first, buy all five; * * * and a half stars !!!.......2007-01-03

This is another crime/noir manga limited series, published as five books story in English.

                    CONTRA:
Lot of violence, lot of unnecesary bizzare stuff, not for children.

                    PRO
Not AS violent as Crying Freeman :) Good ink work. Story evolves into something more than gang wars/vendetta stuff. Series is neither too short nor too long.

                    C'mon, get all 5 books!

                    5 out of 5 stars I'm impressed!.......2005-12-29

Sex, violence, spectacular artwork, and a pleasantly dark storyline. I've read Vol. 1 and anticipating for my Vol. 2 to arrive. This is the best manga I have yet to set my eyes upon. I love how the assassin, Mayo, only charges five dollars per kill because "that's all we're worth." May not be suitable for the faint of heart and/or easilly offended.

3 out of 5 stars Trying to love it ... trying........2005-02-08

The story is thick, the drawings are fantastic... but there are a whole lot of drawings of women (and men) with their legs splayed and substances on their chins... I'm on Part Two of this series, and I don't think I'll be buying the third. I'm trying really hard to accept the sexual violence as part of the story, but it goes farther than just that... It seems to be the artist's fetish, but it is not mine, and I'm not a fan of seeing the same disturbing image every single chapter or more.

5 out of 5 stars Strain is a Must Have for any Fumimura and Ikegami fans.......2000-01-07

Strain is a story of a hitman named Mayo who's fee to kill is only $5. He takes in a young stray girl who he's hired to kill and protects her from mob hitmen who want her dead because of her family ties, which she was no clue of. The girl is tied into Mayo's past more than he thinks. The young girl is actually his brother's daughter, leader of a large company and part of a crime syndicate. Now Mayo has to go back to a past that he'd left for good and protect his new found niece and finally confront his brother, who to him believes Mayo is dead. I'll tell you why but you have to buy the book. If you want to read any of Fumimura and Ikegami's other graphic novels, Crying Freeman and Sanctuary are real MUST HAVES to start you off. I promise you, if you buy Strain, you won't put it down.

                    Book Description

This book has grown out of a need to teach fundamental, practical aspects of structural geology to undergraduate and postgraduate students in the earth sciences and they have written to provide a basic text at undergraduate university level. We have tried to assemble a comprehensive account of such basic techniques as could be the foundation of a practical and theoretical course in the analysis of tectonic structures, stress and strain. Volume 1 covers the principles of deformation, and Volume 2 applies these principles specifically to the analysis of folds and fractures.

                                Book Description

In many cases the failure of components can be described as an extension of flaws. These flaws are usually described as two-dimensional cracks with a sharp tip in which case fracture mechanics can be applied to describe the crack growth behavior. For the assessment of cracked components and for their lifetime prediction, knowledge of stress intensity factors under complex stress situations is essential.

This book describes methods for the calculation of weight functions, a powerful tool for calculating stress intensity factors and, thus, an aid in assessing cracked components and predicting their lifetime. Results are given for one-dimensional (through-the-thickness) cracks and for two-dimensional cracks. While stress intensity factors for many situations can be found in handbooks, such solutions cover only specific loading situations. The method using weight functions allows the stress intensity factor to be calculated for any given geometry.

In addition to a discussion of methods for calculation, the book illustrates application of the methods through the use of examples. An appendix contains some detailed derivations and shows the extension of one of the procedures.

5 out of 5 stars Rules of thumb in codified form.......2007-08-14

This is a fun reference book containing several hundred rules-of-thumb in a reasonable, usable format. The rules are separated into twenty topic categories arranged along the margins. You can spend hours flipping back and forth exploring the different categories. I learned a lot from exploring this book. Did you know you can use a paper match as a feeler gauge for setting ignition points in an old car? Did you know that you need to have 100 albums in your record collection to effectively avoid getting bored by repetition? Did you know you should never trust a calm dog because they're the ones most likely to bite you?
