Read the book, avoid the audio version.......2007-10-10
The material presented seems to be meticulously researched, and clearly and systematically presented. The problem is -on the audio CD edition- the sarcasm with which the lines are spoken. The sneering, cloying sarcasm is so intense, so pervasive, and so grating that it detracts from the narrative. Is it really necessary to emulate Anne Coulter's style?

Greg Palast is the modern day Thomas Paine. Believe me when I say that that is not overstatement. This is the book that got a man tazed by his vociferous opining over one single chapter - in fact, the very chapter that is what makes this book so important to understanding the hijacking of an entire country and its Constitution by the Bush crime machine.
The very fact that Palast has to go to another country to speak his truth tells you that we are in serious danger of losing the fourth estate altogether if we don't pay attention and do something about it.
I heard Palast on progressive radio and started my quest for the facts by reading his online pieces, and then buying this book. I only wish more Americans had listened much earlier and perhaps we could have avoided the fiasco that began with the hanging chad fiasco of 2001 when the Supreme Court appointed King George. That horrific event began the decent into constitutional chaos and the monumental abyss of lies, torture, rendering, the attack on human rights in our country and more.
I am so glad there is a Greg Palast. Just as glad as Bush cronies hate everything this man represents. "Armed Madhouse" is a welcome addition to my reference library and historic archives. Read and become enlightened!
Hostile Takeover.......2007-10-04
Greg Palast's Armed Madhouse documents the thesis of CW Mills' seminal 1956 book The Power Elite - that US politics is just a facade: A facade for a hostile corporate takeover of both governments and nations. Palast asserts and documents that the "war on terror" was conceived as an attempt to destroy OPEC, further impoverish the US middle class, and reap windfall corporate profits from rebuilding Iraq, whose "no-bid", cash cow rebuilding Palast calls "the biggest reconstruction project since the pyramids" [page 277]. Palast humorously remarks in passing that "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was originally dubbed Operation Iraqi Liberation ("O.I.L.") by White House spokesman Ari Fleischer.
"Conspiracy nuts think George Bush, from the moment he took office, had a secret plan to control Iraq's oil. They're wrong. Bush had two plans. Here they are: One crafted by the neoconservatives at the Pentagon, another fashioned by the State Department and Big Oil. This is the history of the secret cold war between these two power elites, which drives the hot war on the Tigris" [page 51].
"[This book] is about how they are taking these American rights away, stripping them off you one by one, from the Wage and Hour Law's 40-hour week to the Clayton Antitrust Law to the False Claims Act to the laws that keep your lights on and your pensions protected. Many are laws that you've probably never heard of, like the Public Utility Holding Company Act. But, take my word for it, you'll miss them when they're gone" [page 284].
Outstanding book.
Highly Informative, Disturbingly Insightful.......2007-10-01
Palast uncovers advanced economic plots to make the rich richer and the poor their servants. First he discusses the oil economy as it relates to big businesses and the political systems of those countries in power. Although there are those who completely dispel Palast's notion that oil is in seemingly infinite supply (and I don't mean right-wingers, either... do a google), I don't think if Palast is wrong on this count that it destroys his theories on how the oil industry operates and prospers. Other keep-the-rich rich schemes include the stealing of elections, something I've already studied and yet, was completely horrified to learn further extent to this phenomenon. Other notable topics include China, our lack-luster education system, and how the working class is held down. Well worth the listen, but have your brain turned on and focused. You can't be day dreaming and get what the author is saying because there are a lot of details given and he talks rather quickly.

This book is based on Soviet archival sources, most previously untapped by Western and Soviet and post-Soviet Russian historians, in addition to German material from the US National Archives. Using this material the author describes the harsh realities of partisan warfare and explains the changing fortunes of the Soviet partisan movement on the territory of north-western Russia occupied by the German Army Group North between 1941 and 1944.
The author argues that after the virtual annihilation of the partisan movement of 1941, during the period from spring 1942 to autumn 1943, despite improvements in partisan combat effectiveness, ruthless German anti-partisan policies, in combination with other measures described, prevented the partisan movement from achieving results hoped for by its leadership.
From the autumn of 1943 the prospect of a scorched earth policy in retreat by a German Army clearly on the run, in combination with the military development of the partisan movement and effective propaganda aimed at the civilian population and military collaborators, provided the foundations for increased partisan success.
The author concludes that despite not living up to contemporary expectations, or, for much of the war, to the claims of Soviet post-war accounts, the Soviet partisan movement was nonetheless, for the Soviet government, a cost effective means of hitting the German war machine in the context of the Soviet war effort as a whole and in particular the horrendous loss of life at the front.

The German-occupied Soviet Union suffered horribly during World War Two. Its population was subjected to the mass murder of Jews, politicals and other groups, to the ruthless exploitation of economic resources for the Nazi war effort, and to often extremely terroristic security measures in the name of "necessary" anti-partisan warfare. Alexander Hill's book seeks to explain the activities of both Soviet partisans and German occupiers in the occupation zone of the Army Group North Rear Area between 1941 and 1944. It is one of a growing array of studies of the complexities of life at the lower levels of Nazi occupied Europe, and makes an important contribution towards understanding the Soviet partisan war on the ground. It also benefits greatly from a range of heplful tables and maps, photographs, and a clear and engaging writing style.

Hill certainly does not play down the suffering which ruthless German anti-partisan measures inflicted, upon parties often entirely innocent of any anti-German activity. Actions such as mass reprisals and the shooting of partisan prisoners and "suspect elements" receive proper attention. But he does go against the widely held view that ruthless German terror methods were entirely unprovoked and simply drove the population into the
arms of the partisans. German anti-partisan measures in the Army Group North Rear Area, whilst often brutal, were frequently responding, in part at least, to the real fear and damage the partisans inflicted - against German supply, occupation administration, and morale. The partisans were after all wide-ranging, numerous, and, amongst both the civilian population and the swamps and forests that covered the region, difficult to detect. Moreover, harrowing though their human impact so often was, the threat of ruthless German reprisal measures did, for a long time at least, genuinely deter the region's population from aiding the partisans.

Hill challenges other accepted views in the predominant focus of the book, the partisans themselves. He does not participate in the eulogizing of the partisans which post-war Soviet historians so often engaged in. The partisans described here could sometimes be as ruthless as their German opponents in their efforts to dragoon the population into aiding their cause. Yet until early 1943, their hit-and-run attacks on supply routes, administrative centres, lone German sentries and other targets were never able to cause the levels of disruption the Soviet leadership had hoped
for. The partisans' ongoing supply and organizational problems saw to this. So too, even more importantly, did a lack of essential popular support from the occupied population. This was caused by the population's fear of German terror, greater in 1941 and 1942 than their fear of the partisans, and by its belief that the Germans might still win the war.

Nor, however, does Hill fully endorse the view that the partisans made no impact on the German war machine. From late 1943 onwards, they became an effective force, benefiting as they did from greater supply of men, training and equipment and, above all, from a new anti-German mood amongst the occupied population. This mood was fuelled by the population's now growing belief that Germany would lose the war, and by the now ever more excessively brutal and exploitative nature of German occupation policy. Nevertheless, even at this point partisan success was qualified at best. For in Hill's own words, "the damage done by partisans at this time was damage done to an opponent already critically wounded."

I read this when it first came out so I'm forced to paraphrase Mr. Broder, Pulitzer Prize winning political commentator, in that quote.
This is a fantastic book. A fascinating, unbiased, inside look at how the news is made. An extremely even keeled examination that is riveting from beginning to end. Personally I would strongly suggest it to any high-school government class, college level media class, and an absolute must for anybody that watches the news on TV or reads the paper.
Find out how politicians manipulate the news, about sound bites, false stories, newspaper owners, and just about everything and anything that deals with news and Mr. Broder does it in an entertaining way. Forget everything you know or think you know about how the news is made. David S. Broder calls it how he's seen it, from the front lines and "behind the front page".

Too bad this is out-of-print! Mr. Broder is not nearly as dry as he is in his newspaper columns in this book but just as insightful and non-partisan. He offers valuable inside criticism on the news media and also answers some common criticisms that he does not feel valued (like the claims of a "conservative" or "liberal" media). Very informative and well worth reading.

I highly recommend this book for the general interest reader.It contains a number of short,but informative,essays,each covering ,on average,2-10 pages.Each essay gives a short biography of an individual scholar who has made a relevant contribution to either theoretical or applied statistics or probability.The contribution is assessed and discussed.Those covered include Sir Ronald Fisher,de Finetti,Ramsey,Savage,Galton,Yule,Karl and Egon Pearson, Harold Jeffreys,and W. Lexis,to name just a few.Surprisingly,the contributions of John Maynard Keynes,George Boole and Benoit Mandelbrot to applied probability and statistics are not covered although each is briefly mentioned in essays covering others.Thus,for instance,Keynes is mentioned in the essay on Frank Ramsey,but no clue is provided the reader about Keynes's original contribution to probability,which was the first systematic exposition of an interval estimate approach to probability analysis based on the work of George Boole.Keynes's contribution is contained in chapters 5,10,15,17 and Part III of his 1921 masterpiece,A Treatise on Probability.Mandelbrot's work,demonstating that there is little,if any, support for the overwhelming use of the normal probability distribution in the study of price movements in financial,stock and commodity markets by financial analysts and economists,calls into question the entire foundation of financial theory that has been built upon the Capital Asset Pricing Model(CAPM)and the Black-Scholes equation.This reviewer feels that the editors could of at least devoted three pages to each of the above mentioned scholars.

I don't agree with the first person who reviewed this book. I found the information on cholesterol to be very helpful and most of recipes are very good. The book was recommended to me by a friend who said she makes some of the dishes when she has company and always receives compliments.
I bought a used copy of this book a couple years ago but noticed an updated version at the library. The new version has twice the recipes of the book I have so I just ordered a new one. Another plus -- my cholesterol dropped 16 points within a short period of time and I attribute it to the Goors' recipes.

This book gives the same facts and tips about lowering cholesterol that most other books have. Recipes are o.k. but mundane (which I guess would be good for people just starting to change their diets.)

I own a number of books on the topic and this is by far the best. It's a gift I give to all my friends who are serious about reducing their cholesterol. You'll find the recipes delicious and easy.

This is the best kitchen resource for pasta and vegetables! Look up the vegetables you have, and for each one, there are a bunch of great sauces to choose from. Plus he suggests substitutions or alterations. Once you've done some, you get the hang of how to mix and match to fit your pantry, or your harvest. Well-written, clear and complete... one of my most used cookbooks ever.

Outstanding book!! Simple and approachable. The most used cookbook in kitchen...Some recipes can be combined to add dimension and complexity. (Of course, as an omnivore, all recipes can be improved with a little pancetta, prosciutto or sausage, not to mention a splash of wine). Huge fan of Jack Bishop!
ps. why buy paperback? Esp. when the hardbacks are nicer and more durable...as well as cheaper!!

There are few cookbooks that are as universally useful as this one. While the subject matter (pasta sauces) is limited, the situations in which you can use these recipes is almost limitless. The book contains simple recipes that make me think that my mom was slacking when she fed us bottled sauce when I was a child. And you can find elegant recipes that use unusual ingredients in imaginative ways. Best of all, you'll love this book if you're a budget-constained novice (like my recent college-grad brother to whom I gave this book - many of the recipes are neither expensive nor difficult) or an accomplished cook, especially in Italian cooking, looking for new ways to prepare pasta. Regardless of your situation, you can find a good recipe in this book. Frankly, this book is indispensible if you want to cook interesting pasta. My copy is so stained from the many sauces that I've cooked that I have an extra "clean" copy that I'm saving for posterity.
I have cooked recipes from this book for my Italian colleagues who were universally impressed by the results. And, quite honestly, I'm not sure if my wife would have married me if I hadn't delved into this book. The first time that I cooked "Spicy mixed peppers with basil and parmesan" was an unqualified success.
This book contains over 100 great recipes for pasta sauces, but if you want suggestions for some specific ones (the type for which you'd bend a corner of a page if you were to give the book as a gift) try (page numbers refer to the hardback version):

A fabulous cookbook to be used again & again!.......2003-06-11
This is one of the very best cookbooks I have ever used! Out of 75+ cookbooks I own, this one gets used repeatedly. The sauces are delicious, and for the most part, very easy to prepare. The recipes are so simple to follow that I prepare most of the sauces from memory now, and it should take only 2 or 3 preparations before you can do these sauces by heart. With a few exceptions, the ingredients are all pretty commonplace. There is almost nothing in your garden that cannot be used in one of these sauces.
This is just a great cookbook in all respects!
