"I want to be one just like him.".......2003-04-11
Fantastic! What a great read from a Bishop who can recognize a man of character and faith. Unlike most Episcopal bishops today who chase after the wind, Bishop Brown has written an interesting short tome on the greatest man produced by the 19th Century. Bishop Brown's intertwining of C.S. Lewis, Dorothy Sayers, and T.S. Elliot makes it all the more interesting. This book will bless you during devotional time.
The Christian beliefs of Robert E. Lee.......2001-09-30
A well-researched book on the religious beliefs of Robert E. Lee. A most instructive study on how these beliefs developed and impacted the man. The book is detailed on just what these beliefs were and how they were at the very core of who Robert E. Lee was.
I disagree with the honorable reader from redmond.......2000-12-17
The review written in a vain attempt to slash at the character of such a paragon of virtue is ridiculous and only shows the strength of Lee's character and the weakness of any who would care to even attempt such damage to it. Lee freed all his slaves by 1863 only because that was the time period set within his father-in-law's will, he would have preferred to release them earlier since he viewed slavery as a vile and impractical institution although he was not in favor of complete and immediate abolition, preferring gradual abolition for their "education as a race"-- in other words, to fit them with abilities worthy of employment and adequate pay once freed. The comment about protocol was ridiculous and incomprehensible. Lee specificially told his younger officers, who suggested that he lead the army into what would be a devastating round of "bushwhacking"- guerrilla warfare in the countryside, that he would not because the only honorable thing was to surrender to Grant, and thus saved the country from years of devastating warfare. To say that Lee prolonged the war, then, is pointless, for it was he who surrendered when davis, his superior, would have continued to fight. The quote which suggests bigorty and prejudice of Lee shall not even be repeated here due to the fact that it was a misinterpretation of his meaning. Lee, in fact, showed by personal example the best way to unite the country. He attended an Episcopalian church in which the congregation was white, until one day a black man entered the church and proceeded to the rail to take communion. there was a oause in the church, for no man dared sit beside this "colored" man- except Lee, who immediate took his seat beside the man and showed that he was in no way prejudiced.
Religious, but not very deep........2000-11-18
A thought-provoking book about one of the more interesting figures in U.S. history. However one might argue that his support of slavery, the needless misery and suffering caused by his refusal to call for an end to the war after his surrender when he admitted all was lost (basically a matter of protocol, due to loyalty to Jefferson Davis), his refusal to allow prisoner exchanges because of the Union's demand that black soldiers be included ('those species of property' as he put it) tempers the urge to consider him the "embodiment of all that is noble, beautiful, and worthy of emulation in the best of the Christian tradition." One would consider the Christian tradition a bit more enlightened. I also wish the author would have included the words Lee spoke when he shook hands with Ely Parker, one of Grant's aides, after the surrender papers were signed at Appomattox Courthouse: "I am glad to see one real American here." Parker responded, "We are all Americans."
The best short insight of this American giant.......2000-03-31
To try to understand Lee apart from his faith is folly. He embodies all that is noble, beautiful, and worthy of emulation in the best of the Christian tradition. His grace, his poise, his presence are all legendary. His strategic acumen is without peer in all of American history. All are grounded in his simple, profound and unshakeable faith in the wisdom and mercy of God. He has been characterized as enimatic by some historians. I believe he is laid bare in this study. Part history and part meditation no Lee admirer should be without this one.

If Pulitzer Prize-winning Nobel laureate Toni Morrison and her son Slade hope to reach children with their rhyming message of personal freedom and individuality, they may have missed the mark. But if even a few excessively controlling grownups learn to "let children be children," this big, colorful picture book might serve its purpose after all. Patty, Mickey, and Liza Sue live in a big brown box (locked from the inside) with all the amenities a modern child dreams of: TV, Barbie, pizza, Spice Girls T-shirts, beanbag chairs, and Pepsi. All this, but no liberty. They've been placed in this box because the adults in their lives believe "those kids can't handle their freedom." They have too much fun in school, sing when they should be studying, feed honey to the bees, and play handball where they shouldn't. Parents, neighbors, and teachers are uncomfortable with these irrepressible children, and hope to control them with strict boundaries. Meanwhile, the younger-yet-wiser children just want the freedom to become themselves: "Even sparrows scream/ And rabbits hop/ And beavers chew trees when they need 'em./ I don't mean to be rude: I want to be nice,/ But I'd like to hang on to my freedom."
Giselle Potter's lovely, childlike paintings create an atmosphere of naïve bewilderment, as the plaintive children wail, over and over, "If freedom is handled just your way/ Then it's not my freedom or free." Morrison's first foray into children's literature is a puzzling, thickly ironic book that asks more questions than it answers. Even as a celebration of the unfettered exuberance of children in the face of societal oppression, a lighter touch would have done wonders. (Click to see a sample spread. For Kids.. And Adults.......2007-04-05
Adults will delight in this children's book about individual freedoms and not being afraid to be yourself. Kids will love hearing it over and over.
Relative.......2007-01-22
I read this book out loud at Children's Hospital to my granddaughter who was barely a month old and showed her the illustrations as well and I think I loved it more than she did! I think it is a great learning tool without hitting anyone over the head about individual freedoms. Great childrens' book but a must read for adults, simple, easy to understand.
A wonderful book for children.......2007-01-08
My five year old daughter loves the message of individuality and freedom Morrison and her son convey in this beautiful story. Despite magazine reviews that insist this is a book for adults, children will love being told that it is ok to be themselves. I have also read this story to my classroom and the children always ask to hear it again.
It's OK to be different!.......2005-08-14
Critically-acclaimed and best-selling novelist/essayist Toni Morrison delves into children's literature with this book about three youngsters that don't quite "fit into the normalcy box", thus the trio must be placed in isolation because of their uniqueness. This separation doesn't seem to be threatening because the youngsters get to have some favorite items and receive visits from parents and others.
All in all, the book celebrates diversity and enables the reader to understand the importance of individuality and the frequent need for "freedom" and non-conformity.
Not for a little Kid.......2005-03-30
When I first picked up this book, it looked like a young children's book with a great concept for self control. But as I read it, the vocabulary didn't fit with the type of children the book was written for. The author tried to rhyme, but the words didn't work with each other. Also, the book was very repetitive. I don't suggest you read this to young kids because the message of "controlling freedom" was not portrayed the way kids understand. All in all, this book is meant for older children and adults who just enjoy picture books.
Customer Reviews:
One of my childhood favorites.......2004-07-09
I loved this book as a child, back when it first came out. I still remember many details from it. I loved the imagination-sparking fantastical elements and I really enjoyed how an ordinary but clever boy could still be a great success. That I still remember it fondly among all my other books speaks volumes.
The Big Jump stirs a child's imagination.......2001-05-29
The Big Jump by Benjamin Elkin is a great children's book. It has a good king and a bad king, but the bad king is not very bad. It has a magic wish sack, a wonderful dog, and a lot of other fun things packed into several different short stories. These are gentle stories that remind me of the way things were when I was a kid, and the way little kids' books should be. The stories are told with imagination and simplicity, and are wonderful to read. We've read it often to our little ones and it is a book that I recommend keeping forever.
Simply Enjoyable.......2000-03-31
A friend of mine said this was her favorite book as a child, and when I read it I found out why. While it is not flashy or geared towards "saving the world," as most children's books are today, in the old style of children's literature it is simple and enchanting. The characters are tastefully unique (I especially love the bizarre king) and the stories are . . . cute. While this book is not a "big jump" in the quality of the children's literary world, it is simply enjoyable.

Customer Reviews:
Robbie Kaplan Says It Well.......2005-11-16
Divorce. Scandal. Suicide. So many awkward times leave you speechless -- or worse fearing you'll say the wrong thing. Fortunately, Kaplan's kind yet no-nonsense book gives you the power to speak -- and help those you love when they're hurting. It's a must-read for tough times.
The Perfect Words.......2005-11-16
This book is a phenomenal guide to finding the perfect words when you want to provide support in the ideal way. As we all know, some situations require a careful approach, some people have delicate sensitivities, and some of life's trials are beyond our comprehension. Especially with loved ones often living so far away, your words may be all you can give. In professional settings where hugs are not appropriate or natural, it's so important to know what to say and how to say it. Robbie Kaplan's book provides the right words, in the perfect way, so that you can be the kind of friend or relative, supportive colleague or neighbor, that you want to be. Highly recommended for all, since the best thing we can do for the people we love is support them...and words are what stay with us the longest.
A Practical Tool.......2005-01-11
For someone working in the world of non-profits and charities, I found this book a helpful tool in dealing with many situations where you want to offer comfort to people who are facing difficult or challenging circumstances. The book offers helpful advice, examples and even sample letters for a wide variety of situations. Robbie Miller Kaplan uses her own experiences as well as consultations with many professionals to create a thoughtfull resource for anyone working in the helping professions.
A Great Resource!.......2005-01-09
Unfortunately, troubling times come up for people close to us all the time and when you least expect it. This is a great resource book to have for those unexpected occasions when you're caught off-guard and aren't sure how best to help your friend who is going through a difficult ordeal. It's scary to think that you might say or do the wrong thing when someone close to you is suffering, so this book gives that reassurance we're all looking for.
Brilliant.......2004-11-04
Robbie Miller Kaplan writes kindly about her personal ordeal in a way that is useful and informative to those of us who have not faced tragedy up close and personal. The book allows you to gather words and be prepared to communicate at times when words mandate great finesse. In addition to words the book facilitates what etiquette to exercise in delicate situations ranging across a multiple spectrum of possibilities to include terrorism. I feel this book is a must have and a keeper for sure.

Customer Reviews:
A Vague Textbook.......2000-11-01
The book has wealth of information for those absolutely new to Food and Beverage. Don't look for inside hints or for good restaurant or service systems for the professional, it's just not there. I ordered the book to improve my knowledge of the finer points of service, what I got instead was a rehash of basic techniques that have been better presented elsewhere. Disappointing for the price.
the professional's reference.......1999-05-24
There's not a whole lot to say about the English edition of the service textbook used by Swiss hotel management schools. Clear writing, decent maps/diagrams, illustrative photographs, and a conservative position are some of the features of this book that covers both dining room and banquet service.
Like the French edition ("Technologie du service"), the page layout design leaves a fair amount of blank space which results in a volume that's much larger than necessary. Still, this is a good reference for the F&B or catering manager to have on his/her bookshelf, to be supplanted with Conrad Tuor's compact "Aide-Memoire du Sommelier" (a.k.a., "Wine and Food Handbook").
Book Description
The essential guide to service skills and techniques that guarantee success

- Present the check and accept payment
- Respond to emergency situations, such as power outages and guest injury
- Use the computer system to support service
- Serve alcoholic beverages
Supplemented with helpful photos and drawings that illustrate everything from napkin folding to taking orders by computer, Restaurant Service Basics gives servers the knowledge and skills they need to satisfy customers, increase gratuities, and develop a faithful clientele that keeps coming back for more.
Customer Reviews:
What a Waste of Time!.......2007-08-02
I bought this book based on the editorial and customer review. Service basics is an overstatement. Do not buy this book unless you have never dined in a restaurant. It will not help you at all if you know anything about the business. The book is filled with helpful gems like "The course that is usually served first is the appetizer. The appetizer is a food item served before the meal..." Wow thanks! What's a Napkin? The computerized service system is at least 10 years behind industry standards and serving from the left with the left hand is not the way it is always done. Stick with the Culinary Arts Institutes "Remarkable Service" It is by far the best there is.
Great material on restaurant service basics!!.......2006-01-17
The book explains how a restaurant is operated thoroughly. The book has pictures to allow easy comprehension. The roles of the entire team from Owner to buss, they're all in there. Explains everyone's task and gives projects to practice on to get a first hand experience. I recommend this book to all business owners and managers. Great book even for waiter/waitress wanting to improve their service.
Book Description
EATiQuette's The Main Course on Table Service turns the tables on the "sell, sell, sell" approach to waitstaff training and puts the focus back where it belongs -- on personalized, professional service.
Sometimes "been there, done that" is a good thing -- especially when it comes to teaching table service. David Rothschild uses his own experienced during his decades in the business to help beginning servers learn the proper techniques while getting a taste of what it's like to be a part of the restaurant industry. His entertaining anecdotes also give experienced servers tips and hints on becoming more efficient and polished in their craft.
If you're considering restaurant service as a career, a temporary job or as a way to supplement your income (in the right place, you may make more per shift than what you're currently earning!) -- or if you're already waiting tables and want to freshen and broaden your skills -- this book is sure to become as indispensable a tool as your favorite order-taking pen or five-turn corkscrew.
Customer Reviews:
This is a great book!.......2005-10-11
I absolutely love this book! The author captures your interest in the first sentence. ANYONE who works in the industry should read it. If you are considering coming into this biz it's perfect because it tells you exactly what to expect.
Great reading for waiters and customers........2002-12-11
This book enlightened me to the world of waiting tables. It's a must for anyone in the restaurant business who waits on customers. Both waiters and customers as well will learn the insides of the restuarant serving business, with guidelines for service and tipping. Easy to read, this book is hard to put down. I recommend it heartily.

I happened on this book by chance and I must say it really is a great reference for anyone in the service business! It is concise and well layed out so you can easily find detailed information on wines, sauces, cocktails, cooking methods etc. The only problem is that there is that most items in the book are not explained in depth, but then again its a reference.
