    Book Description

First Pulse is illustrated with plates of paintings by Joy Garnett, a New York-based artist and Dr. Garnett's daughter, as well as with new microphotography in the final chapter, laying the groundwork for a general theory of "electrogenetics.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Garnett.......2007-06-12

Thank you, Dr. Garnett, for your many years of research, and for writing this magical account of those years. This book provides insight into cancer from the perspective of a researcher, rather than from the perspective of a doctor or patient - a perspective that offers a new vision of the disease. As a cancer survivor who has used the product created by Dr. Garnett, I believe it is well worth the time to read this book for anyone who has been touched by cancer.

3 out of 5 stars Story of a forty year search.......2004-06-22

First Pulse is the story of Dr. Garnett's forty-year search for a non toxic chemotherapy cure for cancer. The end result is his synthesis of Poly-MVA, which according to Ralph W. Moss, Ph.D. (noted alternative cancer treatment expert) will be undergoing clinical trials in India some time in 2004. While the animal results look very good and personal reports from cancer patients using Poly-MVA (especially for brain tumors, as Poly-MVA crosses the blood brain barrier) are very encouraging, the final verdict is by no means in.

Dr. Garnett's theories about cancer cells, especially his theory that they are essentially like embryonic cells that divide rapidly and are undifferentiated, are intriguing.

While Dr. Garnett is clearly a uniquely gifted and tireless researcher - testing over 20,000 compounds in forty years - the book is a bit premature as Poly-MVA is still an experimental compound. The book lacks focus and is more about his vision, philosophy and trials and tribulations than actual science.

Surprisingly, according to Dr. Moss, neither Dr. Garnett nor anyone else has published any peer reviewed journal articles on Poly-MVA. Given that the U.S. government funds alternative medicine research to the tune of about $100 million a year, this is perhaps evidence that the compound may not be living up to its initial promise.

None the less there is a chance that his unique approach to treating cancer will ultimately prove useful in the next two to ten years. His treatment protocol consists of utilizing non toxic palladium compounds to restore the electrical charge of the DNA molecules in cancer cells.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic Bullet?.......2001-05-16

Could this discovery be the magic bullet cancer research has been searchinf for? Quite possibly. All I have to say is that anyone who has had cancer has cancer, or has it and has been told not to expect much from conventional therapy simply must read this book and they check out the PolyMVA website. The long review up front at Amazon says it all but how the Doc arrived at this discovery is very interesting and not too far out scientifically to be understood by the mainstream.

5 out of 5 stars The Pulse of Life: Electrogenetics.......2000-06-24

today i finished the book First Pulse, A Personal Journey in Cancer Research, by Dr. Merrill Garnett, kindly sent to me from Joy Garnett, whose paintings inhabit the pages of the book, bringing the abstract microscopic world of cell research into visibility.

first, i must name my preconceptions of First Pulse, in what may be due to my own issues of mortality. upon receiving the book, i immediately looked at every of the book's numerous paintings by Joy Garnett. they are images at once ghostly and haunting, and beautiful and sublime, of various stages of cell growth and decay, in vibrant yet subdued colors, as if viewed through a microscope.

this visualization of various stages of cancerous growth and subsequent images of treatment in painted form has the quality of a Francis Bacon painting. the horror of Bacon's Study of Pope Innocent X or Figure with Meat, are somehow aestheticized within the scraping lines of paint which at once blur and etherealize the subject. these same streaking lines are present in Joy Garnett's paintings, and my first reaction was an association of cancer with this Baconian visualization of horror. but, the paintings somehow made the disturbing mystery of cancer into something tangible, aesthetic, and even neutral. somehow, the beautiful painted light which visualizes scientific exploration and understanding portrays that journey itself as an artistic venture.

the paintings illuminate the cancerous cell, and bring the science of an esoteric and highly specialized field of research into a public domain, where it should be.

i would not have thought this to be true, but after reading the words of Dr. Garnett alongside the painted images of his daughter, i am left with a sense of awe at what First Pulse could represent- a new model of treating cancerous cells, based on electrical knowledge.

Dr. Garnett took a different path for his research and experimentation. his dedication to understanding cancer centered around a belief that the model of killing off cancerous cells with toxic treatment was one model, and that there could be another model, based on the metabolism of energy in a cell. instead of destroying the cell, the treatment could restore the vitality of the cancerous cell.

Dr. Garnett's search was on for finding such a treatment...

only another electrochemical scientist could say what kind of personal journey it would be to have created and tested 30,000 chemical compounds in this search. but somehow, the quest for truth allows for such determination and belief. and it was the belief about this new 'electrogenetic' model of medicine which would ultimately prove rewarding.

Dr. Garnett knew intuitively that there was a vital "pulse" in the cell, which was absent when the cell died away. to explore this dimension was to explore the question of life itself: that is, what makes something alive. in the technical language of medicine, the conclusion centered around the concept of electron transfer, which is another specialized name for general electrical phenomenon that exists in between the microcosm and macrocosm of the universe.

in fact, this electronic interaction _is_ the First Pulse that Dr. Garnett believes constitutes life. that is, along with the structural information in a chain of molecules, say, making up DNA, is a flow of energy which keeps the cell, and thus the body, healthy. this pulse is a vibration, the result of a frequency of shaking molecules, a literal 'music of the spheres' to be heard by those listening to its signal.

ultimately, this electronic First Pulse is metabolic: ~the cell's food is electrical~ which in turn the DNA utilizes to create an electrical field. filling in a piece of the mysterious puzzle of electrical evolution, Dr. Garnett states: "The schematic is complete. The cell has its first pulse, which makes an active energy exchange between the internal and external... And this first pulse resonates with many other cells, and the packed cells carry on their pulsations with the environment. They resonate with each other and set each other off by inductive influence so that their pulses increase. And the tissue pulses appear, and the heart beats and the brain discharges and the muscles evolve. The organelles modulate and use this in contractile structures, converting the pulse to organic phosphates and other high-energy bonds. But the cell pulse is first and provides the raw electrical energy for all the physiologic pulses."

thus, the cosmologists belief that the universe evolved out of electromagnetic radiation and the birth of electrically charged particles, creating matter in the void, now, there is an electrical theory of life, constituted on the knowledge of electricity at the molecular level up to the human being. it is an important accomplishment for this field of electrical research, and specifically so for the medical field.

this is because Dr. Garnett's research work, grounded in the pragmatics of trial and error scientific (and artistic) experimentation, led to a treatment called the palladium complex (LAPd), based on this new electrogenetic understanding of cancer, restoring the cells energy instead of killing the cancerous cells off, as in traditional chemotherapy treatment. this unique approach to cancer treatment was the result of an investigation into corrosion engineering and the electrical properties of metals. in the end, Dr. Garnett's hard work and vision have produced a new model for cancer research, and the LAPd complex is in the testing stage, after having restored laboratory mice from full-blown cancer to full health.

in all, the work of Dr. Garnett, and the visualization of this miraculous revitalization of a cell's energy flow via the LAPd complex by his daughter Joy Garnett, is a victory for the fields of both the science and art of living. my congratulations go to them in their vital and public journey.

    5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Ideas.......2001-12-05

"What kind of activities are there for the Alzheimer's patient?" is a question that comes up often. I always recommend this book. Carmel describes all kind of activities: music, exercise, food preparation, crafts, gardening, solo activities, family games, and reminiscence. I especially like the chapter on reminiscence--with the life collage, memory book, memory box, and more. Activities are very important, as is explained in this book's introdution: "The more involved patients remain with the world around them, the more resourceful they become at finding ways to keep that world for slipping away."

5 out of 5 stars A goldmine of activity ideas.......2000-04-07

Thanks to this book, I have found dozens of creative ways to keep my mother (who is in the middle stages of Alzheimer's) involved and free from boredom. The activity ideas we found in this wonderful little book have improved my mother's quality of life tremendously and have made caring for her a lot easier and more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars This is an exceptionally helpful book.......1999-07-20

This excellent book provides dozens of ideas for keeping the person with Alzheimer's involved and stimulated. The focus is on using activities such as music, exercise and reminiscing to enhance quality of life. Family and professional caregivers can use these activities and many of the ideas outlined truly work wonders. This is undoubtedly the most useful book available on using activities with people with Alzheimer's.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of good stuff in here!.......2000-01-24

I bought this book because I absolutely love focaccia, but am forever spoiled by the ease of the bread machine. This book brings the two together beautifully! I made the Pesto Focaccia first, because I make my own pesto every summer and freeze it, and this was a great way to make use of it. It turned out really well, and it feels good to hear "Oh my gosh, this is great!" when you try something new! I can't wait to try some of the stuffed pizza recipes, they sound wonderful. The recipes are well written, instructions are clear, and there are a couple of very helpful sections in the beginning that go over equipment, ingredients and "Secrets for Success". There are also lots of hints throughout the book, in fact, there is one after almost every recipe. I also liked the fact that the book is spiral bound, yet hardcover. It lays flat for easy reference, which I found convenient. The only drawback is the lack of pictures. I am a sucker for a cookbook with LOTS of pictures, and I really missed them in this one.

The Rustic Sourdough Focacia is great (though I make it in a baking pan instead of a cookie sheet - it's just too loose and thin otherwise)! Add some camelized onions to the top to make it even better.

Focaccia is my favourite bread, and since I live in Italy I get to eat it as much as I want. But I wanted to try making it on my own, and this book really helped me.
The recipes here are amazing and they really work. They are easy and tasty (they do taste better than the ones I buy at my local bakery). Also the variety is great. The one I like the best is "Focaccia Andrea Doria" but they are all excellent. The book is also filled with beautiful photos. Enjoy it.

      Book Description

The Mediterranean is full of varied and diverse cuisines, but the one thing they all share is a basic reliance on bread. From Italian focaccia and French brioche to Lebanese tabouneh (sourdough pita) and Egyptian fiteer (flatbread), bread is the single most important staple in Mediterranean diets, and serves as the foundation for countless other savory dishes. In Savory Baking from the Mediterranean, Anissa Helou presents a collection of classic and favorite recipes that will provide home cooks with a broad overview of Mediterranean savory baking, from countless variations on flatbreads like pita, focaccia, and lavash, to raised breads such as French Bacon Bread, Greek Spinach and Olive Bread, and Italian Nut Bread. In addition, she offers recipes for a wide variety of pies, tarts, and savory pastries, such as calzones, empanadas, pizzas, and spanakopitta. Savory Baking from the Mediterranean is illustrated through out with 100 artful black and while photographs of landscapes, communities, and breads.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, though not what I expected.......2007-09-13

I'll be honest - I bought this book having never seen it, thinking it would be a book specifically about flatbreads and other specialty breads from the Mediterranean. I am interested in expanding my horizons into flatbreads and eastern breads, so this book looked like a good possibility in that regard. It does cover these, but it's not specifically about flatbreads.

Many tomes on bread emphasize travels and personal anecdotes. This is not the case with this book. There is a brief (14 pages) intro at the beginning that has some personal insights and thoughts, but that's almost all there is for personal reflections - immediately after the introduction, it plunges in to the formulas.

Each recipe has a description, but these descriptions tend to be brief and specific. There are occasional personal notes attached at these points, but the author does not consume a lot of effort in these write-ups. Instead, she gives a short bit of background or history regarding each formula before giving the formula itself.

There are some top-notch recipes in this book! I did get what I wanted in terms of flatbreads - there are mutiple recipes for focaccia, and all of them are very different in terms of the final result. Emphasis is on authenticity, and with each region there is a different "standard" - the author does a splendid job of pointing out the differences.

Where I am in uncharted waters, though, involves some of the recipes included that use meats and fish. The book includes several recipes that call for anchovies - I likely will never try those, simply because I prefer anchovies on the side. Regardless, some breads are an entire meal unto themselves, and this is in line with the traditions of the region.

Also included are multiple recipes for savory pies, containing vegetables and/or meats. This thought had not crossed my mind in terms of bread baking, and it has given me a new area to explore.

On a more abstract level, the writing style is approachable and clear. The page layout is also pleasant on the eyes. There are a few pictures contained within but they are black-and--white and do not dominate.

I was shopping for a specialty book on regional breads - just breads. What I got was an abstract geography lesson with some wonderful new ideas. Had I known that this book was a little more than just a bread book I am not so sure I would have purchased it, but I am very pleased with it regardless. If you're looking for a good introduction to Mediterranean breads that go beyond flatbreads, this is a good book worth your consideration.

4 out of 5 stars Reviewer from Lombardy, Italy.......2005-05-13

This book is a beauty and I've only begun to experiment with the recipes but I must say one thing - the book lacks detailed instructions for the average home baker. I don't know if this has anything to do with the book being translated from italian to english, but inexperienced bakers will be left feeling a bit perplexed by the 'spartan' instructions. The measurements are also in metric units instead of the standard U.S. cups and tablespoons.

Being that I have baking knowledge from working in bakeries and restaurants, my personal opinion of this book is that it's worth the 60 or 70 euros that my husband spent on purchasing it from the publisher. My only regret is that it was not the italian edition. I am tending to believe that perhaps some key steps in procedures may have been lost in the translation.
