Book Description
In this candid and witty autobiography, Nobel laureate Herbert A. Simon looks at his distinguished and varied career, continually asking himself whether (and how) what he learned as a scientist helps to explain other aspects of his life.
A brilliant polymath in an age of increasing specialization, Simon is one of those rare scholars whose work defines fields of inquiry. Crossing disciplinary lines in half a dozen fields, Simon's story encompasses an explosion in the information sciences, the transformation of psychology by the information-processing paradigm, and the use of computer simulation for modeling the behavior of highly complex systems.
Simon's theory of bounded rationality led to a Nobel Prize in economics, and his work on building machines that think -- based on the notion that human intelligence is the rule-governed manipulation of symbols -- laid conceptual foundations for the new cognitive science. Subsequently, contrasting metaphors of the maze (Simon's view) and of the mind (neural nets) have dominated the artificial intelligence debate.
There is also a warm account of his successful marriage and of an unconsummated love affair, letters to his children, columns, a short story, and political and personal intrigue in academe.

The Satisficing Animal in Our Bounded Rationality.......2007-07-11
Satisficing as in searching for "good enough" actions rather than the optimal ones is one of the many contributions Herbert Simon is most famous for, in addition to being one of the parents of Artificial Intelligence. Whether the topic is management decision making, economics, traveling, teaching, or computer programs, this Renaissance Man had a life that many or most would envy.
Herbert Simon is a true example to exemplify the benefits of multi-discipline efforts as one subject does not always know the answers. If anyone is interested in building their own latticework of mental models then the life of Mr. Simon is one to emulate. As this is not your average biography, expect to be challenged as the reading may take you to subjects that you are unaware of or have been exposed to. However, this is what makes the experience worth the trip as my many notes and earmarks attest to.
As his life was about scientific discovery to quote, "I have sketched the theory of scientific discovery to which my study of these problems has led me. It is not a theory of global rationality but one of human limited computation in the face of complexity". Yes, we live in an evermore complex world and I am glade I have some of Mr. Simon's mental models to guide me through it.
Another Great Reference.......2007-01-05
If you are a graduate student of management, this is must for you. Simon is an icon in the field of decision-making. Much of his work has inspired contiuned research in the field of decision-making. An extraordinary man with extraordinary vision.
Twentieth-Century Polymath.......2005-05-21
This intellectual autobiography is not just a chronology of the particulars of a great intellectual life. It is a wonderful opportunity to obtain a coherent overview of the views and contributions of one of the twentieth century's great thinkers. Simon - political scientist with his Ph.D. from University of Chicago, founder of the new and emerging area of artificial intelligence, cognitive psychologist, Cargegie-Mellon faculty member, Nobel laureate for economics (1978), and contributing philosopher of science - was no dilitante. This book, which is written is a very accessible style, reveals the integrity and evolution of his thinking, which can be extracted only with relative difficulty from his large and diverse literary corpus. It is also an inspiring book for any person with an active intellectual life in science or philosophy.

Renaissance Man of the 20th Century.......2003-07-19
The late Herbert Simon was a veritable renaissance man. His autobiography, "Models of My Life," discusses the single thread that underlined all of his intellectual conquests in artificial intelligence, sociology, cognitive science, psychology and economics. This one thread, animated by philosophical positivism and ripe scientific thirst, was his deep obsession with modeling and researching decision-theoretic behavior.
It's interesting to note that even though decision theory (how intelligent agents percieve and act upon choices amid various modalities) serves as the impetus for Simons work, he uses "Models" instead of "Model" in the book's title. This is no accident. For you see, beautifully fitting of his memoir, this book delves into how Simon's one passion was his "heuristic" in choosing which of many paths he could have taken througout his life. The upshot: Simon's own life emulated the heuristic search (in AI) that he helped invent! Consequently, this lead him all over the globe, from Wisconsin to UChicago to Berkeley to Carnegie Mellon to China.
This book is also about the times of Simon: the positivistic turn in social sciences, the scientific fermet of the 1950's, the cultural tumult of the 60's, the death of behaviorism and the rise of cognitivism -- all along, peppered with intrigue of the politics of academia. Although the writing can get quite dry at times, his book is highly recommended.
Learn the Why and How of a Distinguished Life.......2002-05-16
Herbert Simon's research contributes to human knowledge in many different areas, including economics, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and organizational behavior. In each of the mentioned areas, his contributions are ranked among the most important and influential that even a scientist who focuses solely in one area finds hard to achieve. The testimony is the top awards that the community in each discipline bestowed upon him--the Nobel prize is only one of which.
The secret of this interdisciplinary success is that he is, in his own word, a "monomaniac", studying only one thing--human decision process--for fifty years. The field of his own choosing is not bounded by usual academic disciplines, however, and he did study it from many different aspects, from the levels of individual cognition to organizational decisions, using tools as varied as mathematics, computer simulations, and human subjects.
This book detailed his own account of the various aspects of his life, personal and professional, in a sincere and direct prose. From the childhood that undoubtedly helped set the tone for his later accomplishments, the way he managed and nurtured new academic thoughts that later grown into full-fledged disciplines (artificial intelligence, cognitive science, and, less prominently, bounded rationality), to the philosophy of working and living including brief exposures to familial life, we can learn tremendously from hise xperience, decisions, and actions.
How could he achieve as much as he did? We can glean several lessons from his stories. He collaborated extensively. He learned a great deal from the outstanding individuals he respected. He had a love for truth and rigor in reasoning. An empiricist who firmly believed that any valid theory must be based on empirical facts, he did not hesitate to fight against widely held beliefs conflicting with facts. His work on bounded rationality which helped earn him the Nobel Prize is an outstanding case which his stubborn, and valid, arguments against mainstream theories brought a valuable alternative viewpoint to the world. Strong passion and the ability to break out of the mold and stand tall under storms are important characteristics exemplified by many past giants, including Galileo, Columbus, and Einstein.
Not just a normal autobiography, but the story of a distinguished life we all can learn from.
Book Description
Alfred Nobel had been called many names in his lifetime, but he was most hurt when he was referred to as a "merchant of death." The great inventor of dynamite was devastated to learn that he was regarded in such a negative manner. There were so many peaceful uses for his invention that he could not fathom why people claimed that his wealth came mainly from devising innovative ways "to mutilate and kill." Alfred did not want to be remembered like that! So in his will he ordered that his vast estate be invested and that the interest be awarded each year as prizes "to those persons who during the previous year have rendered the greatest services to mankind." This is the story of the moody and reclusive inventor and his great legacy, the Nobel Prize.
Book Description
The Nobel Prize, as founded in Alfred Nobel's will, was the first truly international prize. There is no other award with the same global scope and mission. The Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace, and the Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences (from 1969) have not only captured the most significant contributions to the progress of mankind, they also constitute distinct markers of the major trends in their respective areas. The main reason for the prestige of the Prize today is, however, the lasting importance of the names on the list of Laureates and their contributions to human development.
In celebration of the centennial of the Nobel Prize in 2001, this book offers a clear perspective on the development of human civilization over the past hundred years. The book serves to present the major trends and developments and also provide information about the life and philosophy of Alfred Nobel, the history of the Nobel Foundation, and the procedure for nominating and selecting Nobel Laureates.

A source of hope and valuable information for parents of children with eating disorders
This poignant and informative narrative relates how one mother rescued her daughter from the "experts" and treated the girl's life-threatening anorexia using a controversial approach. Known as the Maudsley Approach, this home-based, family-centered therapy, developed in Great Britain in the 1980s, has been receiving a lot of press here over the past few years. While it has been widely used in Europe for many years and is rapidly gaining acceptance among parents and within the pediatric and child psychiatric communities in the United States, until now, there were no popular books on the subject. Must-reading for parents of children with eating disorders, Eating with Your Anorexic is:
- The first popular book on an increasingly popular approach to curing eating disorders
- A source of practical information and guidance for parents of children with eating disorders
- An eloquent narrative filled with pathos that inspires, empowers, and informs

Saving kids' lives--and parents' sanity.......2007-03-01
One of the worst days of my life was the day my daughter was diagnosed with anorexia. And I'm convinced that all that saved her life, and my sanity, was stumbling across a copy of this book in our local library. I read the whole thing standing in front of the shelf, crying, and then went home with a new plan. Today, two years later, my daughter is healthy and happy and in full recovery (at least now). The information Laura Collins provides in this book is priceless--and it's not disseminated by the medical profession. For parents who are overwhelmed, grieving, and scared, this book is a lifeline and a lifesaver.
Speaks to a parent in ways we can help.......2006-06-30
Found this book very helpful as it took a different approach than the "parents backoff" approach. In our case, you could see a difference in our child almost immediately upon getting some food back in her system. The psychological work became much easier as she could think clearly. We didn't have the fighting etc and we didn't go to school with her to eat. We just used a modified version to get her started to renourish herself. Helped to have a guide that showed parents could help.
something to go on.......2005-06-20
If you are a parent of a child who suddenly spirals into anorexia, you will be shocked and scared, and immediately seek the "professional help" everyone recommends.
However, professionals know very little about what causes the disease. As far as treatment goes, the only thing research suggests can help is "refeeding." The lead researchers on this in the US are James Lock and Daniel LeGrange (whose book "How to Help your Teenager Beat Eating Disorders" I also recommend, as other reviewers do). They present a more scholarly, balanced review of the range of "causes" and "treatments" than this book does, but they conclude that the "Maudsley" family-centered refeeding method has the best success rate.
Collins' book is a personal memoir advocating a family-centered Maudsley method. I feel fortunate, as a parent of a 12-year-old who spiraled into full anorexia within a 3-week period, to have found a professional who introduced us to this approach right away, sparing us some of the agony Collins went through dealing with blame-based "traditional" approaches that left her daughter thinner and thinner.
I read everything I could find on the web, and understood how little is known about anorexia's causes, but that family-centered refeeding is the most promising treatment. Frantic to understand more about "refeeding" between sessions with our professional, I purchased Lock/LeGrange's "How to" book. The crucial information about HOW to refeed is relatively thin, so I turned to this book for more help with specifics on HOW to break the non-eating cycle. HOW do you get a child who thinks food is harming them to take more and more bites of it? Pages 85-92 are the crux, but they are still vaguer than I wished. The motto-principles on 169-173 are good guidelines. I guess we parents know our children best and must improvise on our instincts. Take this story and advice and try your best. If you are reading this, you are probably as desperate as we in figuring out how to help your starving child. This personal account is well worth the price of the common-sense, hands-on, and emotional support it offers in helping your child back to health.
I read it through in a sitting during and after an early "refeeding" meal, and it helped stabilize my resolve to stick it out. It gave me more detailed advice more quickly than I could get from our professional, and thus paid for its price many times over. And your child's health is priceless anyway. Don't delay--I hope it helps you, too.
PS 2 1/2 months later (I posted the above on June 20): Home refeeding has worked for us, and I am as strong an advocate as you will find. Laura Collins' website includes a bulletin board that was a *tremendous* help to me. Recently a mother responded to a post by someone at their wits' end with the following (Sept. 19, 2005):
'She was at her lowest wt in March of this yr [after 4 years of unsuccessful treatments], and I was utterly insane and giving up, and I declared one day "That's it. No more. I will not eat with her anymore, at home or out. I give up. I will never take her to a restaurant again, I will not watch her eating rituals at home, I will walk away from all of this."
Well, my older D heard me say this, and for Mother's Day she gave me a book entitled "Eating W/Your Anorexic." She didn't know at all what the book was about. It was just that the title fit with my declaring "I will not eat with her anymore!"
Laura's book said everything I believed should be the way to handle her ED, I read it in one sitting, and from that moment on I declared to her and anyone listening what I was going to do, refeed this beautiful child, no matter what.
It's 5 months later, Nxx started college this month, has gained all wt lost, and is thriving. Not only is she a healthy wt, but the monster that was in her soul is so very weak now. She's handling college, a breakup with her bf, and a roomate that's bulemic (!!!) with amazing surprising strength.'
Finally, I also recommend a very concise book that I refered again and again: "Eating Disorders: A Parents' Guide," by Rachel Bryant-Waugh and Bryan Lask. Especially for that fun "stage 2"!
Hope for families with very sick children.......2005-04-12
As the father of a child (age 12) who suffered from anorexia and was helped back to health through a family based approach I am grateful to Laura Collins for getting the word out about this relatively unknown, yet very effective, approach.
Frankly, I'm very surprised at the depth of feeling against the approach by some. One previous review said the book lacked "evidence". This is simply not true. The research, which is sited in the book, is clear. Statistically Maudsley has far better outcomes than the traditional approach used in the US. Of course, that's not to say that no one gets better without Maudsley, but the author never says that. Rather, it's a memoir type recounting of her families experiences. Many of those experiences were negative, though eventually the family found excellent doctors and therapists to help.
Far from rejecting a "professional approach" it seems to me for the book calls for MORE professional support. Parents with sick children should be aware that there are choices available. Increasingly, Maudsley is seen as the preferred treatment for young people with anorexia. Families with children going through this difficult illness would welcome competent, compassionate professional support for home refeeding.
I'd recommend this book to the parents of any young anorexic. The "Spotlight Review" states "Eating disorders never go away..." I don't believe this. We've lived the experience and there is hope. And hope is exactly what this book offers.
Informational.......2005-04-04
Eating With Your Anorexic offers hope to families dealing with this disease. The book offers different ways to help people with anorexia nervosa. The author, Laura Collins, bashes on the professional approach towards the disease, but that is only because it did not work for her daughter. I think the book is very well written and it offers guidance to those in this situation, but I do not think that there was enough evidence behind her accusations against doctors. Laura Collins provides the reader with day to day information on how she helped her daughter. She allows readers to realize there is more than one way to treat anorexia nervosa. At the same time, Collins degrades other treatments making it sound as if family based is the only way out. From my own personal experience, I know this is not the case. She should have backed up her accusations with substantial evidence. This would have made her book more believable and reliable in the long run.

World Class Contributors and Excellent Organization........2006-06-03
`Off Duty, The World's Greatest Chefs Cook at Home' is compiled from contributions of 47 extraordinary chefs and one superior culinary journalist, by prominent UK chef, David Nicholls in order to raise funds for `The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation', created to support research following chef Nicholls' son's paralyzing spinal injury about three years ago.
For starters, the subtitle is not exaggerating the claim of representing `the world's greatest chefs'. Not only is every single contributor a major culinary star, some such as Charlie Trotter, Thomas Keller, Alain Ducasse, Daniel Boulud, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten are certifiably among the very best chefs in the world, even more prominent if you are limited to the English speaking world. And, in spite of the self-interest of the target charity, I offer the notion that this is truly a better than typically deserving charity, as one of it's primary objectives may be support for stem cell research to treat spinal injuries, which can be done in the UK with no reservations, yet cannot be pursued unshackled by Government strictures in the United States. I'm particularly moved by the fact that American Thomas Keller and Englishman Gordon Ramsay both did heartfelt forewords to the book.
Each chef's recipes are prefaced by the same mini-interview, and when you take the 47 sets of answers together, you get a really insightful look into the psyche and profile of `the world class chef'. I was particularly tickled by the number of chefs who cite the mortar and pestle as their favorite kitchen tool. Watching two or three episodes of Jamie Oliver's TV shows should be enough to convince you that this tool is a seriously overlooked item in the average American kitchen. This part of the book alone is a world better than the similar squibs from the 11 culinary stars profiled in the similar `Food Network Favorites'.
Another major improvement over the Food Network volume is the fact that each chef offers three dishes that together comprise a very nice menu. My only caveat here is that I have strong suspicions that people like Keller, Trotter, and Boulud do NOT cook these dishes at home, except possibly to do some fancy entertaining. One clue is the prominence of high-end ingredients such as truffles, caviar, and foie gras in many of the recipes. And, I have seen some excellent `cooking at home' recipe books from the likes of Charlie Trotter and Wolfgang Puck, and they are a lot simpler (except for Jamie Oliver and Rodgers and Gray) than the dishes in this book.
Overall, I believe the recipes are quite good. Regardless of whether the chef is British or American, all units are given in both Imperial (spoons and cups and ounces and inches) and metric (liters and grams) units. The only caveat I could find with the recipes is the fact that the picture of the dish did not entirely fit the preparation, although the differences were small.
If what you want is true home cooking recipes, Melissa Clark's similar effort, `Chef, Interrupted' may be just a bit better; however, the great personal insights and the high level of contributor is not there.
This is not my favorite kind of cookbook, but of its type, it certainly sets the standard for others to follow.
Great Book, Great Cause.......2006-05-25
The "author", if you want to call him that I guess he would be more of a compiler, of this book created this book in order to help out his son. His I believe 19 year old son was injured in a swimming accident in Australia and is paralyzed David Nicholls created a non profit research organization to help find a cure so his son can walk again. I personally will be buying approximately 4-5 copies and mailing them to friends just to help the cause. Great recipies from some of the greatest chefs all over the world and a good reason, as if the recipies weren't enough, to buy the book.
A decent cook book and a good read.......2006-04-03
Most products designed to raise fund for a particular cause have little `real' value. These products are, at the most, tokens of appreciation for the supporters of the cause. So when I bought Off Duty, The World Greatest Chefs Cook at Home in support of the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, I didn't expect much out of it. It was going to be just another title in my cook book collection. To my pleasant surprise, this is a handsome book to look at with tons of color photographs - 201 photographs to be exact - most of which are of the finished dish, the rest are of the chefs themselves. This is an interesting read for those of you who are, besides your love of cooking, curious to what each chefs has to say, for it includes a short history and / or interview for everyone of the chefs featured in the book. But the best thing that this book has to offer is the many doable recipes for the home cook like myself. The book has 288 pages with roughly 150 recipes organized by chefs. I thoroughly enjoy this book, a decent cook book and a very good read. And one last thing, for those of you who still believe that British cuisine is nothing to talk about; this volume will change your mind. Highly recommended.
