Book Description
When the SS Athenia was torpedoed and sunk during the first hours of World War II, James Goodson survived-and vowed to become an RAF pilot even though he was an American. This is his story, from the first day of the war to the last, of how he became one of history's leading fighter aces.
Customer Reviews:
A classic in aviation literature.......2007-09-02
"I've read aviation books for well over 30 years and when I read Goodson, was amazed by it. Before joining the USAF, Goodson piloted Spitfires in the RAF. While Goodson's narrative is chronologically ordered, he breaks off at points and discusses individual pilots with whom he's flown. Humor, terror and tragedy and finally redemption rolls off his pen as he pays tributes to his fallen comrades. Goodson's score of 32 kills puts him among the highest of Allied fighter pilots but as the Strafing King, his try at a Me163 rocket fighter sitting on an airfield brings an end to his career as a fighter pilot and the begining of his career as a kreige (PoW slang for prisoner of war). Only his wits keeps him alive since Goodson was to be shot by the Gestapo as a terror-fleiger. A masterful story teller, Goodson's book belongs on your shelf."
One of the best!.......2007-03-23
One of the best fighter pilot biographies ever written. Fast paced, touching, emotionally written but not corny.
They are all there: Gentile, Godfrey, Blakeslee, Clark, Beeson. The fighting sequences are breathtaking without looking exaggerated.
I recommend this one without doubts.
Tumult in the Clouds.......2006-11-20
This book is really another great book for all that love books about combat aviation! Major Goodson takes you on a journey from being on a torpedoed sinking ship, flying with the Eagle Squadron during the Battle of Britain, to flying with the 4th Fighter Group under the command of Colonel Don Blakeslee, then eventually ending after being shot down and becoming a POW.
Not only does this book portray the extraordinary life of Major James Goodson it also gives accounts of the bravest men he served with who are no longer with us today. He goes in to the greatest detail of these men from thier sense of humor, thier lucky clothing items they wore, and sadly how brave and how young they died. Read this book! You will not be disappointed.
Classic Stories Of the 4th Fighter Group .......2005-04-07
Maj. James "Goody" Goodson was one of the top American aces of WWII and served with two legendary outfits: the RAF's Eagle Squadron and, of course, the 4th Fighter Group in the USAAF. This book is more than just the story of Goodson's service in WWII. Each chapter focuses on one or more member of the 4th. It's basically a fighter pilots' hall of fame. Gentile, Godfrey, Blakeslee, Hofer and more. These are stories of incredible heroism, and heartbreaking loss. Goodson writes in a straight-forward, easy-to-read style, that effectively portrays life in a fighter squadron. He talks about the aircraft they flew, including the Spitfire, P-47 and their beloved P-51 Mustangs. One of my favorite stories that dealt with the bond these men had for their fellow pilots, tells of the group returning from a draining strafing mission. Some had to be literally lifted out of their cockpits. But when they were told that the Air, Sea Rescue team hadn't located one of their comrades who had ditched in the North Sea, they got back in their planes and went to look for him. It's too bad they can't make a film about these guys. Unfortunately, there are no actors alive today that could carry it off. If you enjoy books about WWII's air war, you'll like this one.

Superior memoir of WW2 in the air.......2003-08-23
James A. Goodson was one of the better aces in the USAAF in WW2, and shot down about 35 enemy planes in Europe 1941-4. He was himself shot down not long after Normandy, and spent the remaining days of the war in a POW camp. He recounts his experiences in the war, fighting the Luftwaffe in the air, but there are several differences between this book and others of its type.
For one thing, Goodson had a unique perspective on the war in Europe. He was on the Athenia, a passenger ship that was sunk on September 3rd 1939, and with typical mid-20th Century bravado swore vengeance against the evil men who had done this. Frankly, for this passage alone, it's a wonder no one has made this into a movie. He was rescued by a pair of teenage girls, both American, who were in their bras and panties and had to abandon ship like that. Anyway, he joined the RCAF, and wound up in one of the Eagle Squadrons just after the Battle of Britain. He served briefly with Stanford Tuck, and then with a succession of famous and not-so-famous aces during the next years, including Don Gentile and Don Blakeslee.
The real unusual thing about the book is its structure. Most memoirs are a recounting of a particular individual, and they tend to be very personal and somewhat opinionated, by their nature. Goodson's book isn't without opinions, but they're stated in such a way that you don't feel he has any animosity towards those who disagreed with him. Moreover, the heart of the book is a series of portraits of the men he served with, aces who aren't that well known and who didn't survive the war. These portraits are very well-done, enough so that you wonder why the author hasn't written a book before. The effect is quite good, and I would guess that the men involved would be grateful that someone finally noticed their sacrifice.
This is a very good book, and highly recommended.

Probably the best and most personal account of the air war........1999-01-26
This is one of my favorite personal accounts. Goodson, an America, joined the RAF in 1939 and flew Spitfires with the Eagle Squadron. When America entered the war, he was inducted in to the Army Air Corps and transotioned to P-47s. Later, he switched to P-51s and was shot down near the end of the war. In this book, he vivdly recounts air combat from nearly the entire war and pays homage to his comrades. What I liked best about Goodson's account was his humanity. He never glorifies what he did or boasts, even though he was one of the top American aces of the war. I get the impression that he intended the work simply as a tribute to those who fought.
A VERY PERSONAL HISTORY OF A PILOT AND HIS COMRADES.......1998-11-09
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE READ ABOUT WWII AVIATION .THE AUTHOR TELLS HIS PERSONAL STORY BUT IN A BROADER SCENARIO OF THE PEOPLE AROUND HIM AND THEIR PERSONALITIES .IT'S HAS IT'S HUMOROUS ANECDOTES BUT THE TOTAL PERSPECTIVE REFLECTS ON THE PILOTS OF HIS GROUP , THEIR FIGHTER PLANES ,AND THE TRAGEDY OF WAR .

Book Description
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, this book is an in-depth photographic portrait of their monumental work in aviation--and the world's reaction to the invention of flight. From their early experiments with gliders to the first flight of heavier-than-air aircraft, from their tours of European and American air shows to their development of a military aircraft, to the final installation of the Kitty Hawk Flyer at the Smithsonian Institution in 1948, this book celebrates an invention that changed the world.
Composed entirely of photographs of the brothers and their aircraft, as well as such memorabilia and souvenirs as vintage postcards, posters, stereopticon images, and toys, the images in this book are drawn from the most extensive Wright Brothers collection in private hands, which includes many examples by the Wright Brothers' personal photographer, William Preston Mayfield. Published here for the first time, this extraordinary collection will also be on view in an international traveling exhibition.

Excellent Pictures.......2004-11-01
FIrst book I read on Wright Brothers. Excellent pictures and good bood. Wish I could get some of these pictures in 5x7 glossy for the walls in my house, even "first flight". After reading the book, I went back looking at the pictures several times.
Book Description
Anyone suffering from this traumatic arthritic condition will fully appreciate the new edition of Getting Rid Of Gout. Included in the new sections are updated dietary guidelines, including current research on the role of diet in preventing gout, and a description of the new medications available for its treatment. Bryan Emmerson, a recognised authority on gout, argues that if control of the elevated concentrations of uric acid can be achieved through either diet or medication modifications, gout attacks will cease and there will be no further complications. He goes on to outline how effective prevention of gout requires sufferers to understand their condition, one that can be a result of both genetic and lifestyle factors. Written in an understandable and sympathetic manner with the aid of diagrams and cartoons, Getting Rid of Gout offers sensible advice and dispels the popular fallacies about the nature and causes of gout.
Customer Reviews:
Good reference - no magic bullets.......2007-07-09
This book gets fairly technical yet remains accessible to the non-medical specialist. Very comprehensive, good evaluation of the existing alternatives. Plus, enough description of what's understood of the mechanism of gout for you to evaluate new treatments.
Highly recommended for those who want to learn more about how to treat their gout and understand the advantages and disadvantages of each alternative.
Pass The Black Cherry Juice.......2003-01-22
I shouldn't be commenting on this, since I have not read the book. I don't know if I'm repeating information from the book, but as a Gout sufferer, I feel compelled to mention that black cherry juice or concentrate helped relieve the pain in my toe and ankle. Your mileage may vary, but Google it and there seems to be plenty of anecdotal evidence that it works.
One of those great small books. NOT snake oil........2002-07-10
This is an excellent concise but comprehensive book on the gout for the lay reader. It would be better not to have gout, but if you do need to manage it, this is the best book I've seen. The size, title and the photo on the cover gave me the impression that the book was likely to be simplistic and wrong. In fact, it strikes a good balance between readability and detail. It also turns out that Dr Emmerson has published quite a few papers on gout in serious peer reviewed journals.
GREAT BOOK - NEW GOUT SUFFERS MUST READ!.......2001-07-06
If you have gout then READ THIS BOOK ASAP - This is the only comprehensive guide to GOUT I could locate. Excellent reference if you want to understand all aspects and possible causes. I ask lots of questions and this book answered 99 percent of my concerns. Buy your doctor one also - I am new to this condition but now have a definitive plan of action to determine the cause and cure it - not just treat the symptoms. DR. Emmerson if you read these THANK YOU! My TOE wishes I would have found this book 9 months ago.
Sound words.......2001-04-03
This complaint has vexed me sorely for a full threemonth. Mr Shoesmith the chirurgeon has procured some foul liquor from a mountebank toothpuller at Bartley fair, which he vouchsafes will rid me of this abhorrent contagion if assiduously applied by means of a poultice. His advice put me in mind of the wise counsel of the Mahomedans "Never take succour from an envious man". I therefore threw myself upon the mercy and good grace of Messrs Emmerson and Emmer. In matters apothecary they are gentlemen of wit and learning, and though their counsel to abstain from port wine was burdensome indeed, follower of Bacchus that I am, I must report an abatement of my pains which will enable me to travel to Europe on the Lisbon packet later this year.

His expertise lends to a survey of the spices based on his world travels and in-depth knowledge of culinary history and lore.......2006-04-03
Tony Hill's Spice Lover's Guide To Herbs & Spices is an IACP Cookbook Award finalist and goes way beyond similar-named herb and spice guides. Tony Hill owns Seattle's World Merchants Spice, Herb & Teahouse: here his expertise lends to a survey of the spices based on his world travels and in-depth knowledge of culinary history and lore. Definitions of spice characteristics, color photos of spices and herbs, and recipes provide plenty of explanation on spice or herb characteristics and why they work in particular dishes. It's these extensive explanations which set Spice Lover's Guide To Herbs & Spices apart from all others.
a wealth of info!.......2006-03-07
As a chef I am always looking for info on the things we eat! I have been thrilled with all the facts, uses and descriptions packed into this book. Well organized from A to Z, with a listing of herbs and spices you will recognize as well as things new and different even to a well "seasoned" chef. I love the fact that along with the name, alternate names, origin, part of the plant used, and uses, Tony Hill gives a little story for each item. Sometimes he tells you how he came to discover the spice or maybe a story about the first time he tasted it. Overall a great read packed with a lot of facts!

A great way to give spicy food a try.......2006-11-14
Some people love it spicy, and others hate it. In fact, spicy food is not just about fire and heat. There is considerable flavor in those spicy ingredients, and introducing these flavors subtley is simply too frightening to many. The best part of this book is the heat rating (1 flame to 5 flame) for each recipe. If you don't think you like spicy food, try some of the 1 flame recipes and introduce yourself to some great cuisine. As your palate becomes more adventurous , you might try some of the hotter dishes. Start with Olive and Artichoke Tapenade, then serve Medallions of Pork with Flamed Cognac and Green Peppercorn Sauce. No one will pull the fire alarm, but they'll all wonder how you learned to cook with so much flavor. This book not only provides recipes from throughout the heat spectrum, but it also draws on the full expanse of international cuisines. You'll get all kinds of ideas that you might not come across in most cookbooks. Enjoy, this book is fun!
For spicy food lovers.......2006-09-12
Do you or someone you know love spicy foods? Ginger, horseradish, wasabi, chili peppers and mustard? This is the book for you. Lots of information including history of the foods. This is especially for people who are not afraid to try something different to cook and eat.
Another nice feature is a "recipe heat scale" using flames. One flame is mild, 2 is mild to medium, 3 is medium to hot, 4 is hot. Five is extremely hot for those who like to annihilate their taste buds (I call it the "scorched tongue policy").
My only complaint is there is no photos. I don't expect photos for all the recipes but some would be good to have. It's just a nice bonus.
Customer Reviews:
You get what you pay for..........2003-01-05
This is a small reference book, full of names, addresses & contact info for hot sauce vendors. But, don't expect an eye-popper, there's not much more to it than your local yellow pages. I bought this as a stocking stuffer for a hot sauce enthusiast, and wound up not giving it. Based on the photo, I expected a colorful book, full of pictures of hot sauce bottles, chilis, and what-not. There are no pictures, just listings. It has all the excitement of the local phone directory. The paper is newsprint-like, adding to the "yellow pages" tone of the book. It is very small in reality, pocketbook size, and thin. The content is not ~remotely~ exciting as I'd hoped.
But,,, if you're just looking for a small portable directory to find names & addresses for hot saucing, this little ... book could be handy.
.......
A Great Introduction to Hot Sauce.......2001-06-12
This is a fun book that categories hot sauce by region and gives a heat rating from 1 to 4 chilies. While the flavors and ingredients are included, and the rating system is generally accurate, this book would be more useful if it included a better comparison to well known hot sauces (such as Tabasco) and if the authors included a short list of sauces that would serve as an introduction to various regional hot sauces.
Fabulous book for the beginner or experienced collector.......1999-03-02
The book is a great starting point for someone who is interested in beginning a collection of hot sauce. There is a lot of information that is useful in helping someone who may not know where to look to start a collection. Some of the information however is out of date. For example I was searching for a particular hot sauce that was listed and the address of where to get it was a man's home address and he did not collect or have any of the hot sauce that he was referred to as having. There are not many of those mistakes and if someone is really looking for a particular sauce there is plenty of information and locations listed within the book to call or email for additional information or to have a brochure sent to you personnally. This book was given to me as a gift and it was how I was started in collecting hot sauce. Because of this book I have met many neat and interesting people as well as visited the sites and activities that are listed within.
