Book Description
During his life, Booker T. Washington was among the most celebrated educators, authors, and statesmen of his day. He walked side by side with Frederick Douglass, Mark Twain, H. G. Wells, Theodore Roosevelt, and Andrew Carnegie. He was the first African American to dine with the president in the White House and the first to have tea with the queen of England. He was the first African American to receive honorary degrees from Harvard and Dartmouth, the first African American to be honored on a postage stamp, the first African American to be commemorated on a coin, the first African American to have a naval vessel named for him, and the first African American to have schools named after him.
To many African Americans today, Washington points the way toward prosperity and sophistication. Today his spiritual and economic wisdom is being reclaimed as a proven path of racial advance, and his ideas are again gaining currency among upwardly mobile African Americans. In this brief volume, Stephen Mansfield reviews the course of Washington's life and highlights those principles and practices that undergirded the great educator's ability to empower all people to be the best they can be.

An Amazing Man.......2007-05-02
This book is one of those rare gems that, if you're really fortunate, you come across from time to time. I received it as a gift from one of my mentors, Charlie Jones, who had, for some time now, been speaking of Booker T. Washington as one of his heroes. Having only a very surface knowledge of Mr. Washington - knowing that he was born a slave and went on to become founder of the famed Tuskegee Institute - he was a hero of mine, as well. After all, one could only imagine what he had to overcome to have achieved all he did.
However, after reading this book by Pastor Stephen Mansfield, the greatness of Mr. Washington simply came alive for me. He was a man of character, a man of faith, a dreamer and a doer; a man who moved mountains and moved hearts.
He had a plan - he had a dream - for taking his people from a horrible situation and helping them to move up and become successful in every way.
Unfortunately, as the author points out, he was fought every step along the way - often most by those he was trying to help and, in time, and long after he died in 1915, was disparaged by many as simply naïve, foolish, a misguided optimist, betrayer to his people.
Of course, none of this is true. Reading the story of Booker T. Washington in 2007 we can look back in hindsight and see that everything he taught - regarding the importance of character, thrift, knowledge, wisdom, forgiveness, love, persistence, delayed gratification, humility, etc. - is the way to build oneself, one's people and one's nation.
Only now is this man's wisdom and greatness beginning to once again be recognized and embraced. This book should be read by anyone and everyone looking to achieve greatness in their life. Read this book and you'll have the roadmap for doing so.
Booker T. Washington was a wonderful man; a hero. And the author, Pastor Mansfield, did a superb job in telling the story.
P.S. By the way, if you get an opportunity to read the booklet, "Character Building" by Booker T. Washington it will also be WELL worth your time. It's a reprinting of a number of his "Sunday Evening Talks" to his students and faculty members. The advice and wisdom that Mr. Washington shared is simply amazing.
Terrific.......2003-06-26
In another sterling volume of the Leaders in Action series, Stephen Mansfield here outlines the life and character of Booker T. Washington. In vivacious voice and moving magniloquence, Mansfield traces Washington's path from slavery to his founding of Tuskegee Institute. He shows the difficulties Washington surpassed in reaching his goals, and the principles that helped him make it. In the words of Washington, "Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succed." By this standard, Booker T. Washington was an astonishingly successful man.
Washington wrote his own autobiography, _Up From Slavery_, which must certainly not be neglected. But Mansfield's biography is also a criticial read because he includes facts that the autobiographer was too modest to mention, and he highlights wonderful aspects of Washington's character that humility prevented him from including. This biography doesn't contain the wonderful self-analysis and insight of Booker himself - but it does contain all the benefits of a third person account.
One thing I really appreciated about this book was its terrific analysis of slavery and inter-race reconciliation. Expounding Booker's opinion, Mansfield blames both whites and blacks for the problems that cropped up after the Civil War. Whites needed to repent of their brutal treatment of slaves and actually begin considering blacks more than mere animals; and blacks needed to repent of their spirit of bitterness toward their white enslavers, and begin working hard and leaving no excuse for disrespect of blacks. Too many books on reconciliation have practically advocated bitterness, hatred, and laziness when what is really needed is Washington's outlook of forgiveness and hard work. This book offers relief from such pride.
To wrap up, this is a great biography. Good history, good style, and good content. Buy it.
Outstanding biography of an outstanding Black American........2000-03-03
Then Darkness Fled is a celebration of the life of Booker T. Washinghton and tells of a man who dined with heads of state and became the first Afro-American to receive honorary degrees from Harvard and Dartmouth. Chapters survey both his achievements and his life in this lively coverage.
Book Description
Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002) was one of the greatest philosophers of our era. He was also at the center of some of the century's darkest, most complex historical events, for he chose to remain in his native Germany in the 1930s, neither supporting Hitler nor actively opposing him, but negotiating instead an "unpolitical" position that allowed him to continue his philosophical work. In this magisterial book, Jean Grondin appraises Gadamer's life and achievement. Drawing on countless interviews with Gadamer and his contemporaries, Gadamer's personal correspondence, and extensive archival research, Grondin traces Gadamer's life as an academician and the development of his ideas, placing them in the context of his times. He sheds light on the genesis and accomplishment of Gadamer's major opus, Truth and Method, the bible of modern-day hermeneutics. And he addresses the question of Gadamer's attitude and actions amid the catastrophe of Nazi Germany, painting a balanced portrait of a scholar who tried to preserve German culture and tradition in the face of an invasive menace.
Customer Reviews:
Truth And Tedium!.......2003-05-09
The author of this thick biography, Jean Grondin, has always been one of the most astute and informed commentators on the subject of philosophical hermeneutics.
Prospective readers need not be put off by this volume's bulk (478 pages) since almost 140 pages are devoted to scholarly apparatus which most of us will ignore. That leaves only 338 pages of actual text to read (plus a few pages of pictures to enjoy). In this era of bloated biographies, we can be thankful for Professor Grondin's restraint. The average intelligent reader will probably find herself skimming chapters 2 - 5 (Gadamer's ancestry and youth) and chapters 10 - 12 (academic politics in the mid-twentieth century) thereby shortening this book by an additional 115 pages. That leaves about 200 pages of interesting reading about Gadamer, Heidegger, Nazis, poets, Habermas, Derrida, Plato, phenomenology, human finitude, etc.
Not surprisingly, Professor Grondin does a fine job of sorting out the influences of others in the formation of Gadamer's conception of hermeneutics and in communicating the gist of his major work, TRUTH AND METHOD. Unfortunately, Grondin never gets around to telling us much about his subject's life-long enthusiasm for the arts (Why did Gadamer love Rilke's poetry? What visual artists was Gadamer excited about?).
In short, this is a good biography of an important twentieth century philosopher, but not a great one (for a great one order Ray Monk's WITTGENSTEIN : THE DUTY OF GENIUS).

Book Description
This brief text assists students in understanding Gadamer's philosophy and thinking so that they can more fully engage in useful, intelligent class dialogue and improve their understanding of course content. Part of the "Wadsworth Philosophers Series," (which will eventually consist of approximately 100 titles, each focusing on a single "thinker" from ancient times to the present), ON GADAMER is written by a philosopher deeply versed in the philosophy of this key thinker. Like other books in the series, this concise book offers sufficient insight into the thinking of a notable philosopher better enabling students to engage in the reading and to discuss the material in class and on paper.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2007-09-11
This book is among the best to be released to the general public about the many different types of Chi Kung training. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about internal cultivation and understanding a very rich part of traditional Chinese culture.
Best Qigong book in English Language.......2006-09-06
I train with Master Wen-Ching Wu and i have trained a little with Grandmaster Liang, and I have not been able to find ANY books that come close to surpassing the ones that they have written. Together they have an incredibly vast knowledge of martial arts and Qigong and share it quite willingly in their fantastic books and teachings.
Great Product and Transaction.......2006-07-10
This book is incredible. Stocked full of wisdom and useful information as promised. Perfect condition, and quickly shipped. Thank you to the seller.
Qigong Empowerment....a very good resource with the right knowledge.......2006-06-04
I bought `Qigong Empowerment' because, it "is the most unique and complete volume ever written in the English language on qigong" (quote from back cover). Other reviews tended to support this claim. So, I bought it and I am very glad I did. This book is an extensive compilation of many types of qigong exercises.
The book is good in the sense that it gives 1) a good introduction to Qigong, 2) some basics of meridians and TCM theory (with basic acupuncture charts in the appendix); 3) an encyclopedic amount of qigong exercises (medical, Daoist, Buddhist, healing, and wushu - some of which are rather hard to come by as others have already stated), and 4) some corrective methods in appendix B. This book is a great book for point three alone. By the way, some of the other reviews complain about the lack of warnings in this book. I agree that the warnings are lacking within the main text. But to be completely fair to the authors, they tell the reader in the introduction to be familiar with appendix B. A brief glance at appendix B should instill enough caution to follow instructions very precisely. The authors state that if one follows the instructions thoroughly, the practice is safe.
It is my opinion that this book is best suited for those who have an idea of personal qigong development (ie, knows the types and stages of practice and the goal of each stage). To be sure, the book is not devoid of information regarding stages and steps in qigong development, but the description is skeletal. This is fine because the authors cannot do everything in one book. For those without such background knowledge, you should consult "the Roots of Chinese Qigong" by Dr. Yang. The author discusses qigong theory in this book and the attentive reader will come out with a road map of personal qigong development. At this point, "Qigong Empowerment" and its myriads of exercises will be much more intelligible and the reader will be able to use "Qigong Empowerment" with a deeper understanding. Of course, all practice does not need to be put on hold for the beginner. Master Shou-Yu Liang provides guidance on what exercises to start for the first several months of practice. Go to Master Shou-Yu Liang's website and find the FEBRUARY/MARCH 2003 newsletter and look for "A Guideline to Beginning Qigong Training". This guideline is not presented as clearly in the book, so do consult the website. This will provide enough guidance for several months. Whilst building a solid foundation in these months, you can also read and digest the material in "Roots of Chinese Qigong".
For beginners or anyone else looking for something simpler but still very effective, I recommend Hunyuan Qigong (this is the core of my qigong practice). It has 12 exercises and all exercises can be done, and should be done, at all stages of progress. Hunyuan Qigong was developed in order to foster health and martial art ability (but not through hard qigong). By the way, I still recommend learning about theory. It will help you understand the `why' of this method as well.
To learn this form, I recommend two resources.
I) Hunyuan DVD by Chen Zhonghua - this resource gives basic instruction regarding the 12 exercises. (search for chen zhonghua's website on google as the DVD and book are not available on amazon),
II) "Hunyuan Qigong" by Feng Zhiqiang - this book will give more detailed information on each move. It is a very helpful addition to the DVD.
Anyway, there are my 2 cents.
By the way, I cannot benefit financially from anyone purchasing Chen Zhonghua's material. He is an excellent master. That is why I recommend his material.
WHAT?!.......2006-04-19
I bought this book for the buddhism section because of another review I read. I have to say I was very dissapointed. It contains almost nothing on buddhism, just a bunch of arbitrary forms and excercises with very little explanation on how this is supposed to increase your chi, and improve your metal clarity. I felt like i might as well be reading a book on voodoo. But what really put me off of this book was the section on Wushu qigong. I fail to understand the merrits of conditioning such parts of the anatomy as the solar plexis, throat, armpits, and yes, groin. Here is an excerpt;
p.256 Section 8, Groin Conditioning
Step 4. Pulling. Use both hands and grab a hold of the base of the penis, pull up and circle from right to left, 30-50 times; thenleft to right 30-50 times. Then pull forward and release 30-50 times. Next massage the dantion area until it is hot.
Step 5. Hitting with the edge of your palms and bamboo stick bundles...
I am not kidding. This is an actual excerpt. It then goes on to say that once you have conditioned your groin sufficiently you should start hitting your groin with a bamboo stick. Wow! Maybe they are not aware of the invention of the cup.
It could be that there is some information of real value in this book, but after reading this, and some of the other equally silly stuff, I couldn't see the point of wasting more time reading further.

Cooking Healthy With a Man in Mind.......2006-03-04
Joanna Lund has made my life so much easier with her delicious and healthy recipes. The recipes in this cookbook are easy to make and the ingredients won't break the bank. Another winner by this author!
Quick & Easy Cooking.......2006-01-14
I believe this is a great cookbook for several reasons:
(1) The ingredients are easy to find & I'm likely to have them on hand; (2) The recipes are usually easy to prepare; (3) It teaches how to eat healthy and make simple, healthy substitutes; (4) Most recipes produce excellent tasting, hearty meals my husband enjoys.
Great for weight watchers, too!.......2003-07-14
With the calories, fat and fiber listed, Joanna's books are great to use on the weight watchers program, especially when you are too busy to cook the gourmet, time consuming recipies from the weight watchers folks. I don't mind using canned foods to prepare great tasting meals! I can eat my fresh fruits and veggies elsewhere- I want something hearty when I sit down at the table for dinner!
Helpful...but pretty boring.......2002-09-25
OK - has basic meals...nothing too fancy or adventurous. I bought this new months ago and have yet to cook something from it...just too boring to bother with.
I'm not a fan of soupy, goopy, skillet food...and there appears to be lots of that in here.
Fat out of your diet with food that taste good........2002-08-08
I am a man who has many health conditions--heart problem and diabetic--that require me to reduce the fat in my diet. I have tried all sorts of diets and fads that have come along to assist me. None have worked in the long term. Most are two difficult and time consumming to prepare with portion control that is not suitable to satisfy a man. The recipes in this book are easy to prepare and use the things right off the grocery store shelf. They are satisfying and I don't crave fat things. Ms. Lund states in her book that the preparation of the meal should not take longer than it does to eat it. I could not agree more.
I am a walking testament that the simple to prepare and tasty recipes in this book--especially the desserts--greatly reduce the fat in your diet. A side affect of Ms. Lund's recipes is that reducing the fat is causing me to lose weight without having to eat portions that will only satisfy a mouse. I recommend her book highly.

Cook Book.......2007-09-14
I'm not too excited about this book. Most of the recipes in it are things I wouldn't want to eat....
***I love this book!!***.......2007-03-03
This is absolutely my favorite cookbook!! When I was trying to diet, I was always left feeling hungry and I hated doing without dessert. So of course my diets would fail.
I happened to see Joanna Lund's cooking program on tv and decided it was worth trying one of her books. My husband and I love every recipe I have tried!! The best part of all is I feel satisfied and full when I eat, and I have lost 9 lbs since buying this book 7 weeks ago. I have bought several more of her cookbooks recently and love them too. Joanna Lund cookbooks are the only ones I will use now. I highly recommend this book!!
for the picky teenagers.. lol.......2002-11-22
My mother bought this book a long while back, when I still lived at home. My brother and I both turned our noses up to most vegetables, among other things, so we generally ate alot of fast foods and convenience-type foods from the grocery.
Now that I am married and out of my mother's house, I've been experimenting with many different foods and cooking constantly. I recently called my mother to have her email me a recipe from this book that I had remembered her fixing when she first bought it. "Mexicalli Pie" :-D My mother was shocked that I actually remembered this, and my husband really enjoyed it when I made it.
I've since borrowed this book and have yet to fix anything that my husband and I didnt thoroughly enjoy.. and he was a more picky eater than both my brother AND myself! ;) I DEFINATELY reccomend this book for... well, anyone! Meals that actually TASTE GOOD, and can fool even us finicky eaters into eating healthy!
Great book.......2002-11-21
I first saw Joanna Lund on a morning show. The recipe was sooooooo simple and sounded so good that I thought I would try one of her books. Her husband is a truck driver and so is mine so I figured I couldn't lose. I was right. My husband loved the recipes that I tried. He liked them so well that I bought a different recipe book, the diabetic one. I tried these recipies on my father-in-law because he's diabetic and he loved them, as well as my children. Now when they ask what's for dinner, they ask me if I can make one of "the recipes". I even talked my sister-in-law and 2 cousins into buying the books. They think they are great also........
Real food for real people - don't tell them its healthy!.......2002-03-18
After my husband had a heart attack in October - we had to radically change our way of eating. I saw really fast that I had to come up with something other than chicken and broccoli! At a cardiac rehab education class, another wife mentioned she used the cookbooks by Joanna Lund. Having nothing but a hungry husband to lose, I ordered one and was pleasantly surprised that not only did she use ingredients that I have in my kitchen, the results were tasty, filling and did not look HEALTHY! ( A sure way to chase my husband out of the kitchen!) EAch recipe is broken down by calories, fat grams, sodium and most diet exchange program needs. Fantastic aid for anyone who is realigning their diets for any reason!
