Book Description
The Young Ones is a collection of stories from the wartime experiences of some of the American airmen who served in Europe and the Pacific during WW II.
The stories are narrated by the airmen or submitted by relatives, and recount missions over enemy territory, encounters with enemy fighters, struggles to control battle damaged planes, crash landings, and bail out from exploding planes, often leaving behind dead and wounded buddies.
Many airmen who survived these experiences were captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs. They were often brutally treated by their captors.
However, some airmen managed to evade captivity and escaped. Some were on the run for months throughout Europe, some hiding for almost a year until war's end.
Thousands of POWs in Germany were on the forced marches in the beginning of 1945, the Death Marches. Their suffering on these marches is painfully retold on some of these pages.
These are the stories of some American airmen who served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II, most of them only 19 or 20 years of age. These are the stories of The Young Ones.

Keep History Alive!!!.......2004-01-02
"The Young Ones"by Erik Dyreborg
The Young Ones is filled with some of the most exciting and memorable notes of escapes during WW II. The stamina and courage of these young men is almost unbelieveable. The exploitskeep you virtually on the edge of your seat throughout the entire read.
I makes you proud to know that this caliber of young men represented our nation ... So very young and heroic.
It is a well coordinated documentation of the exploits of young AMericans who risked so much and have been unable to share their experiences to any great extent.
Thanks to Erik Dyreborg for keeping their experiences alive and thus enabling others to share in an relatively unexplored area of WW II.
Sincerely,
Lois Eveland
The Young Ones reviewed by Frank J. Finklang.......2003-10-24
Erik, the author, presented an opportunity to those who survived the ravages of war with a way to be a part of his compendium of experiences of the Air War of WWII. I feel that by drawing on these individual segments of history that for the most part, were not widely disseminated or documented, he has provided the public a glimpse of what is a patch quilt of the happenings of that era. Those contributing their experiences dug deep in their memories of events that most had been stifling for years to avoid reliving the pain they and their fellow crew members experienced in combat. This book reflects only the stories of the few who wished to honor comrades who couldn't or wouldn't share their role in the fatal game called war. Many have died or will soon die without describing what they found out in their first hand experiences during a terrible time in history when millions of people died, some good, some bad, in the name of patriotism or loyalty to their country's cause. A common thread throughout this book is seen in what some call Luck, and how seconds separated the losers and survivors in the Air War. I believe the primary goal of the author is to show the need for an alternative to war as a means of solving the world's problems. Another important goal is to stimulate those readers who have important contributions yet to be documented, to understand that unless they share their experiences, thery will be lost forever at their death. (See page 319 for my story).

Real Stories.......2003-09-27
The Young Ones is a very interesting but a sobering read. These individual experiences truly make you realize the sacrifices our airmen made during WWII. Surely, in most cases, to remember and relay those harrowing days was difficult for the veteran. I feel much gratitude toward these men for their service to our country and also for having their stories recorded for history.
The impact the years in the service had on these men is evident by the details they were able to recall and describe. The recording of these experiences was made many years after WWII.
This truly is a classic collection of some very brave and courageous young Americans.

The Young Ones is not really a book. As you start to read the stories you feel almost immediately that you are having a conversation with the individuals while learning about their experiences and quickly seeing that the price of freedom comes high. This book crosses generation lines and offers inspriation to the young and old alike.
The spoken language has been put on the pages and makes reading fun, interesting and relaxing. You do not want to put the book down. The size and scope of the book really is the story of WW11 Avaition.
This book belongs in schools and libraries. Teenagers, especially should be exposed to the book and learn the lessons passed on by many brave young fliers.

First-hand accounts of World War II experiences that should never be forgotten. This book does a fine job of preserving an important part of history for future generations. Well done!

Book Description
During the phony war, the young Sartre made use of his spare time to make a series of notes on philosophy, literature, politics, history and autobiography which anticipate the themes of his later masterpieces, and often surpass them in literary verve and directness.

A wonderfully human side of an ostensibly brainy guy.......2001-02-08
The main title of this book can be a little misleading, for the entries date from 1939-40, before the war in France really heated up. Sartre saw no action during this period (he was in his early 30s), but he WAS in military service on the front during the "phony war." Mostly, he had a lot of time to think and write.
Sartre worked on some of the foundations for _Being and Nothingness_ and existential theory in general, so there's some of that here, but this is a marvelously HUMAN document. As well as the sort of intellectual blasts one expects from him (Flaubert's _A Sentimental Education_ is deemed to be "clumsy, disagreeable ... utterly idiotic"), Sartre writes of his insecurities ("In relation to Gauguin, Van Gogh and Rimbaud, I have a distinct inferiority complex because they managed to destroy themselves"; "It's true, I'm not authentic. With everything that I feel, before actually feeling it I know that I'm feeling it ... I fool people: I look like a sensitive person but I'm barren ... I am nothing but pride and lucidity").
There's a lot about his love of women and burning desire for beauty -- to be IN something beautiful; and his total failure at friendships with men, save for what he termed women-men ("an extremely rare species, standing out from the rest thanks to their physical charm or sometimes beauty, and to a host of inner riches which the common run of men know nothing of ... I'm a woman-man myself, I think, for all my ugliness").
Sometimes he is flip, sounding more like he's trying out aphorisms for size ("I would condemn someone definitively for a linguistic mannerism, but not because I'd seen him murder his mother"), and sometimes simple and sincere ("A day begun with a breakfast is a lucky day"). Above all, he broods on the nature of freedom and authenticity. This is a much more accessible work than much of his fiction or polished essays.

Breaking Free From Emotional Eating.......2007-05-08
As a serial dieter, I was skeptical of anything claiming to help me "break free" from this millstone around my neck. But as I read the book I began to see what a novel approach Ms. Roth has outlined. It is clear, well-defined and, I think, do-able in the long run. It is not a fast fix and I cannot yet testify to its effectiveness, but I am hopeful and look forward to the soul searching and self-discovery that lies ahead. If nothing else, it has calmed me down, taken away a large part of my dispair, and given me a glimpse of possible freedom from my addiction.
Body/mind balance.......2007-04-01
The author shares her battle with emotional overeating and outlines some principles and helpful exercises to help you achieve good body/mind balance.
A good book but is just Compulsive Eating retitled.......2007-01-29
It's a good book but I didn't realise until it arrived from Amazon that I already had the book. The original was released as Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating. This is Breaking Free from Emotional Eating.
I have to confess to feeling slightly cheated having bought the same book twice!!! I've given it 4 stars because it's a good book but I was pretty frustrated to receive a book I'd already read
This book has saved my life!.......2006-07-10
I have had problems with emotional eating/binge eating on and off for over 15 years. Geneen Roth shares her struggle with emotional eating and as you are reading you feel as if you are not alone. That many other people share your struggle and there is help. This book is based on her work shops with exercises but mainly deep reading that really gets you to re-set how you think about yourself. I have and I do recommend this book.
one of the best.......2006-01-26
If you are interested in mindful eating, this is a great book. It was suggested to me from a woman I know who 'recovered' from an ED over 8 years ago, and this (and, actually, all of Geneen's books - check out 'why weight') was the number one thing she suggested I read.
Customer Reviews:
best of it's kind.......2005-02-05
In my opinion, this is the best book ever written on this subject. Geneen Roth's personal struggle with compulsive eating is heartfelt. The other personal stories are very helpful also. She covers so many areas that at first glance you would not consider to be tied in with compulsive eating. I read this book when it first came out and lost weight easily. After my last pregnancy, I again began to struggle with my weight. I used Weight Watchers to get most of it off, but then hit a plateau. It was then that I discovered that I was still eating compulsively, only I was eating healthier foods. I am now back with Geneen's books and feel like I'm back on the wagon. This book makes you reflect on all the issues you have experienced with your weight. She does it empathetically, but also with a touch of humor. I hope this book will touch others the way it has touched me.
A GODSEND.......2004-01-23
When I finally faced the horrible reality that I suffered from compulsive binge eating, and went to a psychiatrist who specialized in teenage eating disorders, the first thing she had me do was read this book. Thank God for her advice. I know now the hundreds of diet books I had read before were such garbage- and that they contributed to my eating disorder by telling me what I could and couldnt eat-and when-to the point that I was never eating what I really wanted, and when I did, I felt so guilty that I just shoved food as fast as I could in my mouth, figuring I would "start fresh" the next day. This cycle of binge eating and restrictive dieting is what geenen roth helps you overcome in this book, by giving the sound advice that if you eat only when actually hungry ( and if you were like me and didnt know when that was anymore, she tells you how to work towards knowing) and stop when you are full, and eat foods you actually enjoy, that you will control your weight in a non-obsessive way. I have spent so much money on so many ridiculous diet books that I know look back on with regret, but this book is one I will always treasure for helping me get through a truly awful period and finally helping me to see the light and shed myself of a terrible habit once and for all.
Good.......2003-05-22
This book is good for the compulsive eater. However, there seemed to be just a little emotional detachment, making it slightly harder to pull someone into it. Granted, a compulsive eater may have a hard time with ANY book of this type, but there was just a little missing. Still, this is one of the best books on this subject, so this book should definitely be read for that reason.
A Wonderfully Encouraging Book!.......2003-05-11
I read this book as part of an Overeater's Anonymous list of good reading material. If you are struggling with self-esteem and need support and encouragement then this book will amaze you and get you on the right path. Geneen Roth is very gentle and her own struggles have shaped her writing beautifully.
After 13 years of binging....I stopped completely!.......2002-12-03
...so simple, so brilliant, and so effective. For all those who suffer from this compulsion, that few can understand, and that comes with so much pain, loneliness, shame and agony....please consider this book. It's hard to believe you can ever stop binging....but you can and go on to enjoy eating whatever you want....because you'll never want to binge again! With the help of this book, I kicked the habit 15 years ago and I've never had a problem since. Never. Good luck everyone!

Book Description
People from all walks of life give in to temptations and adopt patterns of secrecy and shame. David Eckman reveals how appetites can dominate the lives of men and women, and addictions to sex, pornography, food, chemicals, and even work can take hold. This is a much–needed Christian look at fighting addiction that should be in every church and home.
With research support and biblical principles, Eckman shares
- why unhealthy appetites take root in people
- how to trade shame for a new identity in Christ
- why commitment to prayer, confession, and growth protects us
Readers will discover how to break the pattern of out–of–control desires and extend grace, not judgment, to those facing such struggles.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful and Biblical.......2007-09-10
Dr. Eckman does a wonderful job of uncovering what is happening under the surface when it comes to all types of addiction. This book is not only helpful for those facing battles with drugs or alcohol...it would be a helpful read for anyone facing any type of addiction. He points to the family background and its long term effects and simple processes and patterns within addiction. He points people to a new understanding of what it means to be a child of God and find our security and meaning through our Creator. It's well worth the price and time to read. I highly recommend it.
A good tablespoon of truth.......2007-01-05
Great book, truthful insights...but can we trust David Eckman's own Biblical Translations of the Bible?

Very good book but not for everybody.......2005-12-03
I thought this book was a wonderful addition to the huge arsenal of books written to help those struggling with compulsive eating and weight control issues. And, from a clinical standpoint, her ideas really do work. I will be recommending it to my patients who follow the Christian faith journey.
For the record, the book is written for the Christian niche, which is very sizeable market worldwide. It seems that her faith-based approach is offensive to some as reflected in the other reviews; and, because her faith approach differs from theirs, they clearly don't appreciate what Dr. Mintle is saying in her helpful book.
Interestingly, their response to their not understanding is to react in an angry manner. Maybe it would be more helpful to consider taking the pathway of acceptance and tolerance rather than hatred and rejection. And, perhaps these negative attitudes are saying something about what might be keeping them trapped in their own weight issues?
The truth can set you free, but it might have to hurt a little bit first.
Oh Jesus! .......2005-09-26
If you want to exchange the worship of food for the worship of Jesus, then this is your dream book. The chapters are full of specially composed prayers deemed suitable for compulsive overeaters, together with Biblical examples of the values of eating. Be warned that in the introduction you are going to come across the following paragraph, which sets the tone of the book. I quote:
"Food does not have to rule your life...Self-control is possible when the Holy Spirit lives within you...It comes as you surrender your life to God, walk in His ways and allow His Spirit to direct you. As the Spirit leads you, He will renew your mind, take control of your emotions and bring your will into obedience."
So this is where I've been going wrong. If giving yourself over to Jesus works for you then I'm truly glad. I'm afraid this book just made me head for the chocolates -yes, naturally, the whole box!
Absolutely nothing to do with science, medicine, or even common sense.......2005-07-26
This book gives general information on overeating, tells you why the bible says it's a sin, and then says the only way to get better is to accept Jesus Christ as your savior and listen to worship CDs when you feel like eating.

Recipes, remedies, and folk wisdom steep in the magic of this delightful guide to choosing, brewing, and enjoying the benefits of herbal teas.
Customer Reviews:
A fun little book, hits all the key points.......2003-11-28
This is a neat little book. It starts out with hisory of tea, some definitions, etc. Then there are recipes - good ones too. Some ingredients have been a little hard for me to find (like elder flowers). Then there are specific descriptions with neat folk lore of 10 different herbs (chamomile, fennel, ginger, hyssop, lavender, lemon balm, licorice, peppermint, rosemary). Fir the bakerm there are some recipes on different cookies, scones etc to go with your tea. Then there are recipes for medicinal teas (coughs, fatigue, fever, etc). I also like how there are little side bars on almost ever other page with a nice quote about tea or the differnt herbs. Really a special little book. Definitely recommend it for the tea enthusiast.
Very practical and useful book for herbal tea novices.......1998-11-04
I thoroughly enjoy this book and have re-read it several times to memorize recipes. It opened my senses to the enjoyment of herbal teas. I could easily find the herbs I needed to make most of the teas in this book. The tea time treats look scrumptious as well. The medicinal teas have been beneficial and the folk wisdom enlightening. I only wish this book was longer!
