Book Description

A truly unbelievable story of life, death, war and forgotten love. Air Force top gun Kyle Kendrick, a leader in the initial air strike of the Gulf War, returns to England and is assigned duty as the first American/NATO liaison at RAF Coltishall. After departing the RAF Winter Ball, Kyle is involved in an unsurvivable car accident. This is the true story of Kyle's battle to survive and to put his life back together once he overcomes the horrible damage to his body and amnesia. It is Jamie Morris' story, too, as the love of Kyle's life. For he does not remember who she is!

5 out of 5 stars YOU Got It Bad?! Try This Guy's Adventure.......2005-05-09

THE TURNED FIELD's main character, Air Force pilot and Gulf War hero, Kyle Kendrick loves flying A-10s and Jaguars. Then one night, something happens. How will he fly now? Author Kent Jacobs based THE TURNED FIELD on a true story, which he learned when he and his wife, Sallie, met a man with a tracheotomy scar. An M.D. with thirty years experience practicing, Jacobs asked him what happened. The answer floored the doctor. He asked if he could write the tale, and man agreed. Using narrative and flashback, Jacobs wove characters, plot, and description into a tale of vivid realism. For anybody who likes the theme of people against themselves, THE TURNED FIELD is an especially good read. It's also good for those who like complex interactions between characters, and psychological drama. THE TURNED FIELD is inspiring and thought provoking. What happened to Kyle Kendrick could happen to anyone--at any moment. Who would be tough enough to react to it as Kyle did? Jacobs' simple, direct style never bogs the reader down in details. Still, THE TURNED FILED is full of lots of stuff: emotion, love, rejection, Air force lore, adventure, and courage that make it hard to put down. It's a must for the reading list.

4 out of 5 stars The Turned Field.......2004-09-14

Kent Jacobs spins a magnificent tale based on the real-life experience of Kyle Hendrick, former U.S.ir Force Top Gun, now ststioned in the UK. After leaving the annual RAF winter ball, Kyle skids off the roadwayand has a horrendous accident that nearly takes his life. The ambulanc attendats assume he is dead and transport him to the ER in a body bag. However, he clings tenaciously to life although gravely injured withmultiple fractures, massive internal traumas, and brtain damage which leaves him with no memory. The author weaves a superb storydocumenting Kyle's indomitable will to live, and seems to get into the patient's mindas hje describes the physical pain and mental frustration and anguish as recovery begins to take place, albeit so slowly. The tale is filled with suspense and surprises on almost every page, making it difficult to set the book aside. Jacobs explores thepassions of love, hate ,betrayal and adultery, as well as the depressing effects of loving someone who no longer remembers or recognizes you. The suspense of the storydoes not let up until the very last wordsa of the final chapter, when the enigma surrounding Kyle's relationships with those surrounding him is finally resolved.
The book is a great read, and should be on everyones "mst read" list.

4 out of 5 stars Great real story.......2004-09-02

I thourghly enjoyed this powerfull well told story, mostly because it was real and because I,like most of us relish triumphant tales of love, survival, betrayal, and happy endings.
The story is about real people that we have all known;comrades, lovers, dedicated no nonsense professionals, super achievers, shallow decievers, and good people that get a second chance. Read it and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2006-10-04

I read this book last year after borrowing it from my local library and it was an extremely quick and entertaining read! If you love to hear about success stories, principles, and dealing with adversity; or just love to eat those mall-bound cookies, then this book is for you! I just wish she'd write another biography/memoir as I hear she's very good on the motivational speaking circuit and know that she has since divorced her husband, her kids are all grown up, and Mrs. Fields now has pre-packaged cookies in supermarkets. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, splendid for a mrs fields' fan.......2003-12-06

This book shows the life of mrs fields, it's exciting, with a humourus twist. See how a housewife become a rich lady with her first batch of cookies! Highly recommended.
This book shows that unexpectingly good luck that only a few could have. Good book for people who likes biography.

              Book Description

The life and teachings of Diogenes of Sinope, the Greek philosopher who gave rise to classical Cynicism, deserve careful consideration because of their relevance to contemporary ethical issues. The task of reconstructing the philosopher's life, however, is exceedingly difficult, because in his case, more than in those of other ancient philosophers, we must deal not only with the scarcity of reliable sources and testimonies, but also with the mountains of anecdotal and fictional accounts that are responsible for the creation of a veritable literary legend around the Cynic who once lived in a tub. This comprehensive study reconstructs his biography on the basis of classical and Arabic sources, identifies the main ideas and principles of his philosophy, and shows the application of his philosophical message for our contemporary world. It also includes an extensively annotated translation of Diogenes Laertius' Life of Diogenes of Sinope, which is our principal source of information about the philosopher.

              5 out of 5 stars Lucky Find!.......2003-05-21

This book is fabulous! Navia chronicles the life of Diogenes in an academic and professional manner, and effectively disputes many claims made by other philosopher historians, such as F. Sayre. If you are a fan of Diogenes the man and what he stood for, then you will definitely find this book edifying, but if you are not, then it is still an excellent learning experience.

5 out of 5 stars An important philosophy for our time........2001-01-27

I thoroughly recommend Diogenes of Sinope as essential reading for both Classical Greek scholars and those who simply wish to learn out more about the Cynics, their philosophy, and their way of life. Indeed, anyone who has overlooked this important philosophy. Scholarly in its approach, this book is yet compulsively readable. I was easily carried through the text which is generously peppered with fascinating anecdotes from the primary sources as well as Navia's own compelling interpretations. What better place to start an understanding of Cynicism than through its hero Diogenes.

In Chapter 4, Hegel's view that Cynicism contains little philosophy and no `system' is demolished. Navia presents the reader with a very comprehensive and systematised account of what Cynicism's philosophy is, and yet achieves this without undermining Cynicism's integrity, for instance by not leaving a trail of `truths' for some unscrupulous management theorist to claim as the latest quick fix for a failing company. At the end of this chapter, Cynicism emerges with its anti-scientific credentials intact, but also with much greater clarity about what Diogenes' brand of Cynicism stands FOR as well as what it opposes. I deliberately choose the present tense here, because what Navia demonstrates in these pages, is that (unlike the ideas of say Freud or Marx, who as one writer put it `were weighed down by the cultural baggage of their time'), Diogenes' view of the world is as fresh and relevant today as it was 2,300 years ago. The reader should be left in no doubt that Cynicism represents a very powerful philosophy, even if he or she is not inclined to share it.

Throughout the book I was impressed by passages that sent me off contemplating contemporary issues and debates, but I also appreciated the detail and minutia that conjured up vivid portraits of life at the time ~ Diogenes life in particular. The appendix of Diogenes Laertius' (not to be confused with Navia's own hero) original writings about Diogenes the Cynic is very helpful in supporting Navia's own text. What Navia has achieved cleverly in this book, is to strike a balance between producing an authoritative text which reinforces the `facts' available, while at the same time, acknowledging the myth-making that is essential for a real understanding of the Diogenes phenomenon.

It has become the norm of our fast-paced world to expect everything to happen instantaneously, and for us to become instantly aggravated when it doesn’t. The result is that we can feel frantic and rushed, stressed and unhappy nearly all the time. In The Power of Patience, M. J. Ryan teaches us how to slow the rush and reclaim the forgotten virtue of patience on a daily basis. She shows how doing so allows us to make better decisions and to feel better about ourselves every day.

As the creator of the bestselling books, Random Acts of Kindness and Attitudes of Gratitude, M.J. Ryan discovered that the classic virtues have enduring power to bring light and love into our lives. With The Power of Patience, she shares what she has learned about the gifts that this old-fashioned quality can bestow, the attitudes that foster a patient outlook, and the practical tools that help us to respond patiently in any given moment.

The Power of Patience calls on us to reclaim our time, our priorities, and our ability to respond to life with a firmly grounded sense of who we are. It is the best gift, we soon learn, that we can give ourselves.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.......2007-05-08

This book is perfect for someone who's learning to assert patience in their daily lives. First off, the chapters are short and to the point, which is perfect for the readers of this particular book. Secondly, each chapter deals with a different aspect of life and how patience plays a role. So, if you're dealing with a specific situation, it's most likely covered in this book. Lastly, the author doesn't preach to you. Instead, she speaks of her own struggles with losing her patience and how, even now, she slips up from time to time. I'm very glad I read it.

5 out of 5 stars Patience is good.......2006-02-25

I took my time reading this book. I found it very insightful and motivating. I do believe it has taught me to be more patient.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely good for leisure. Really helpful? Hard to tell.......2005-09-05

The following passage on page 1 precisely describes my mind:-

                Dear God,
I pray for patience. And I want it Right Now!
                - Oren Arnold

From the above, you can tell it's hard to satisfy an impatient reader like me. However, I must say that in the previous two days when I was reading the book here and there, during various means of transport, I did have better patience or tolerance towards queues, jostlers, neightbourhood annoyances etc etc., though I dont know whether the tranquilizing effect is for long or for short.

No matter what, I love reading it for the author's shrewd writing and clever use of excellent passages from others. I am sure you wont lose your patience for or whilst reading it. Certainly good food for thought. Below please find some of my favorite quotes for your reference.

Mary Jane Ryan's POWER OF PATIENCE puts it all into perspective. Through inspiring quotes, stories, and practical suggestions, she creates an insightful, personal and very useful journey for readers. I've had the book a week and have already read it twice (the combination of a house fire, huge loss and a very bad insurance company are making me a student of patience and perspective...thank goodness for this book!). POWER OF PATIENCE would also make a terrific gift.

Born in Japan and raised on Honolulu, Alan Wong is one of Hawaii's top chefs and a major influence in creating a unified and distinctive regional cuisine. Wong led the way in capturing the essential flavors and exceptional cultural diversity of his home, earning him a prestigious James Beard nomination for Best Regional Chef. In a unique triumph of East-West style, ALAN WONG'S NEW WAVE LUAU showcases Alan's signature blend of Pacific-Rim styles. His genre-bending fare combines Western culinary techniques with the flavors of China, Japan, Hawaii, and beyond—with tantalizing and innovative results. With delicacies such as Lobster Won-Ton Ravioli in a Curry Potato Sauce and Kona Mocha Brûlée, ALAN WONG'S NEW WAVE LUAU delivers these incredible indulgences to the home cook.

Alan Wong's New Wave Luau is a glamorous book full of color photos that convey the complexity of his lush and exciting cooking. It is also alive with Chef Wong's passion for his Asian heritage and that of the Hawaiian Islands, where his restaurant has three times been selected Best Restaurant of the Year by Honolulu magazine.

Chosen Best Regional Chef for the Pacific Northwest in 1996 by the James Beard Foundation, Wong is a master of multicultural cooking. Called Hawaiian Regional Cuisine, his dishes fuse local ingredients and traditions with foods and techniques from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Taking the succulent meat from whole Kalua Pig, pit-roasted luau style, he uses it in a risotto dotted with corn and crunchy water chestnuts, then enriched with truffle butter. He also features this smoky pork in nachos built on crunchy taro chips, topped with chile-spiked guacamole.

As you feast on the photos, it is almost possible to taste the artistic creations depicted, each one dense with contrasting flavors and textures. His Surf and Turf, for example, features grilled beef tenderloin and a Kona lobster tail wrapped around a scallop. They are served with a roasted potato topped with wasabi-spiked mashed potatoes. This potato sprouts leaves of tat soi, an Asian green, and spiraling antennae of fried linguini. Grilled marinated mushrooms and asparagus add to the plate, which is drizzled with a sauce combining cream, truffle butter, and soy vinaigrette. Then it is ringed with shining dots of basil oil and finished with a sprinkling of chives and diced tomato.

Lest this strenuous cooking intimidate you, it is easy to make Wong's Asian Guacamole flavored with ginger and sake, Five Spice Risotto rich with shiitake mushrooms, and Asian Ratatouille, unexpectedly enhanced with oyster sauce and sesame oil. Each adds immeasurably to a meal of grilled fish or store-bought roast chicken.

Anyone with an ice-cream maker must try the recipes for tropical Guava, Lychee-Ginger, and Mango Lime ice cream, and a quartet of memorably exotic, liquored sorbets. --Dana Jacobi

Sometimes there are cookbooks that you can taste and then there are the ones that prefer a more clinical approach to cooking . Alan Wong's New Wave Luau is a very good exposition of Pacific Rim Cuisine. This book along with Sam Choy and Roy Yamaguchi give the cook/reader a flavorful and expansive overview of what is the cuisine of the islands and the Pacific Rim. The recipes explore Hawaii's culinary influences and then creates a few influences of his own.
The book is not for beginners. For those who are interested in learning more about contemporary cuisine this is a great read. The ingredients can now be found in most international markets, and if not then with a little research you can find just about everything through an online retailer.
The recipes do work if you follow the directions. There is much to learn from New Wave Luau and all you have to do is read, study the photos, learn about how the flavors interact and then cook your way through them. It's a lot of fun.
I have had the book for several years now and still return to it every now and then for a few inspirations and guides when researching new foods that I am interested in. This is a book for the serious cook. And then, once you get past the hard stuff it is all fun and adventure, really. Hawaiian cuisine is a marvel of color, flavor and aroma. Of course seafood is king in any book of island recipes, and it should be. Alan Wong's New Wave Luau just jumps off of the page inviting the reader into the grocery store and the kitchen, and sometimes into the fishing boat.
What is New Wave Luau? Well, go to page 86 and cook the Steamed Opakapaka and Gingered Vegetables in Truffle Broth, and there you have it. Bringing Japan, Thailand, Hawaii and France together in one recipe without disturbing the wonderful quality and design of the food itself.

The cookbooks of the three great Hawaiian writer/chefs are excellent examples that we must live to eat, not eat to live.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in understanding what makes the foods of the 21st century so in love with life and flavor. What is more important to food than advancing ideas of unity to the table so that others may learn to do the same? Alan Wong's New Wave Luau along with the writings of Sam Choy and Roy Yamaguichi do just that.

1 out of 5 stars Coffee table book.......2004-05-01

I received this book as a gift. I found that it was not very practical. Ingredients I could not get. Instructions were too difficult. I'd recommend getting a different Hawaiian cook book.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty but not practical........2004-04-19

I actually purchased this book. The recipes are not practical if you do not live in Hawaii. Unless you are a chef, the directions are difficult to execute. He lists no alternative ingredients for mainlanders like myself.

If you want a picture book to stick on your coffee table, this might work. Otherwise I would rather pass. I will be selling this book on Amazon shortly.

2 out of 5 stars Very Hard to Replicate.......2003-12-03

Beautiful pictures, but the dishes were nearly impossible to replicate and some were overly arranged. Food as art. Some of the ingredients are unavailable or overly expensive. But the pictures in the book are fabulous!
