Book Description

On an early morning in the fall of 1942, Kemp McLaughlin's group set out for a raid on a French target. Immediately after dropping its bombs, McLaughlin's plane was hit. A huge fire burned a four-foot hole in his wing, his waist gunner bailed out, his radio operator was wounded, the plane lost all oxygen, and his pilot put on a parachute and sat on the escape hatch, waiting for the plane to explode. And this was only McLaughlin's first sortie.

McLaughlin went on to pilot the mission command plane on the second raid against Schweinfurt, the largest air raid in history, which resulted in the destruction of 70 percent of German ball bearing production capability. McLaughlin also participated in the bombing of heavy water installations in Norway, returning to Scotland with one engine burning and Messerschmitts in unrelenting pursuit. An especially long flight once left him out of fuel and over neutral Ireland, where he crash-landed with four generals on board, including the Commander of American Forces in the European Theater of Operations.

The Mighty Eighth in WWII also includes the stories of pilots who were downed in France and Holland. They traveled under the cover of night through the countryside, evading the Nazis who had seen their planes go down. The pilots found citizens willing to help and hide them, and they made their way through the underground networks of Europe in an effort to get back to England.

As a group leader, McLaughlin was responsible for the planning and execution of air raids, forced to follow the directives of senior (and sometimes less informed) officers. His position as one of the managers of the massive sky trains allows him to provide unique insights into the work of maintenance and armament crews, preflight briefings, and off-duty activities of the airmen. No other memoir of World War II reveals so much about both the actual bombing runs against Nazi Germany and the management of personnel and material that made those airborne armadas possible.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!.......2006-09-11

I totally disagree with the "Reader" who posted a very negative review about this book. As the author of over 1,000 magazine articles and eight books -- the last two about flying -- and a former U.S.Navy fighter pilot, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I tip my hat to Brig.Gen.J.Kemp McLaughlin for doing such a fine job in detailing his WWII experiences. I particularly like the detailed index, the short chapters, the easy reading of non-complex sentences, and the use of common words. His recall of names and places, and his personal comments about specific people, made you feel like you were in his place, living the frightening and stressful skies in combat on some of the most dangerous B-17 missions... Furthermore, this is a good example of a book that can be written without the use of crude or vulgar language. I've tried to locate the author to call him, but have not been able to find his e-mail or phone number. General, if you read this, please call me at (818)346-7024 (Los Angeles area). My call sign, by the way, is "Crash"; I earned it!

5 out of 5 stars Truly America's Greatest Generation.......2001-08-16

The General's accounts of what young men experienced during the war are awe-inspiring. To think of the sacrifices that were made in the skies above Europe in the early days of the war makes one wonder if today's young Americans could do the same.

For those that are aviation buffs, the book goes into detail about the logistics involved and the archaic and rudementary navigational aides of time and the virtual absense of air traffic control. It is truly a miracle that several hundred bombers could take off and get into formation and proceed to the target by primarily using pyrotechnics.

A must read!

2 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2000-12-30

J. Kemp, Brig. Gen., USAFR McLaughlin's experiences in WWII were truly epic; however, the lack of detail in his written account and his modesty in revealing his contributions and bravery during the AIR Bombing Campaign over Europe understates and limits the reader's ability to better comprehend the conflict. I would rate this book as "One Star" for older readers, but I think younger readers (7th, 8th and 9th Grade) may find the book a helpful primer. If you are a serious reader of WWII History avoid this book.

Product Description

The true story revealed through encrypted messages within the whole works of Shakespeare far exceeds the drama, comedy, tragedy, intrigue, betrayal, false identity and heroism of the actual plays! A real cipher wheel exists today and the author has painstakingly decoded the works of Shakespeare and compared them to known historic events to create a poignant and tragic tale that ends on a note of triumphant. Illustrations and code wheels included so the reader can do it themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read........2007-10-20

Don't bother reading this book if you still believe that Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare. It would be just too much information. But if you want to find out more about Francis Bacon and his 'pens' then this book is a goldmine of background and reasons why. Very readable. Dovetails nicely into Alfred Dodd's work on the same subject.

5 out of 5 stars One has to admire the persistence and minute attention to detail........2007-06-04

Scholar of mysticism Virginia M. Fellows presents The Shakespeare Code, a one-of-a-kind revelation of hidden codes concealed in the works of Shakespeare and other writers of his time. Exposing amazing and scandalous stories, such as the hidden marriage of Elizabeth the "Virgin Queen", tales of murder and scandal, corruption, and the true-life story of code-devisor Francis Bacon, The Shakespeare Code is at once both shocking and intriguing. An amazing compendium of ciphers and methodologies applied to classic literature, from bi-formed alphabets to Dr. Owen's cipher to Ignatius Donnelly's cipher and more; regardless of whether one agrees with all the author's conclusions, one has to admire the persistence and minute attention to detail.

5 out of 5 stars Reviewed by Amy Lignor.......2007-05-31

This book explores the story of Sir Francis Bacon, the (alleged) son of Queen Elizabeth I, The Virgin Queen. A cipher wheel exists today that was used to painstakingly decode the works of Williams Shakespeare and find, within the folds of literary genius, the story of an ignored heir to the Tudor throne.

There are many adjectives I could use here, dear reader. Exciting, intriguing, beguiling - but I think I will stick with...fantastic! You will be amazed by the little known fact, (at least to most), that there are two societies (which are still in operation today) called the Stratfordians (who believe that William Shakespeare is definitely who he said he was and the much beloved writer of, well, any time period); and a group called the Baconians, who truly believe (and, in this reader's opinion) has offered a ton of information that states the case that Sir Francis Bacon was the real Shakespeare, who simply hired old Will to be the "mask" that hid Bacon's works from the Queen. Much like the Montagues and Capulets, these "families" are still battling for the real truth.

Bacon was a member, if not the originator, of a secret society of `pens'; writers who used Athena, the goddess of Athens, as their representative. The goddess of Athens, by the way, was known as the Spear-Shaker (hmm).

There is an extremely well-thought out and, fantastically presented, case for Francis Bacon, here. And, I must say, I believe that Virginia Fellows and the Baconians have a valid point. This book shows the cipher that was discovered in Shakespeare's works that make it not only real and of great historical value, but, most importantly, believable that the fiery Queen Elizabeth was at one time produced on the written page as Lady Macbeth and Cleopatra. Francis Bacon, being only one of Queen Elizabeth's unrecognized offspring, buried the "real" story in the words of `Shakespeare' so that he would not be brought before his volatile mother, accused of treason, and lose his head at the Tower of London.

Perfect, mesmerizing, deliciously fun, this book is for anyone interested in history, codes, science, literature, conspiracies - pretty much anything. This is not akin to another familiar, best-selling `Code'. It is quite real, and a work of pure genius. Let the debate begin!

4 out of 5 stars The Bard merely a mask for the true writer of literature's finest words - Francis Bacon.......2007-05-04

Reviewed by Amelia Bibb for Reader Views (4/07)

Virginia M. Fellows executes beautifully the telling of what some might call only a theory and others argue a fact. William Shakespeare had neither the upbringing nor true talent to have written literature's finest works; moreover, the true identity of the author of our beloved works is none other than Francis Bacon.

Bacon, labeled a poet by writers such as Shelley, has left this revelation and the story of his true identity in the very text of sonnets and plays. Two hundred years pass, and several parties take over the painstaking tasks of creating the Word Cypher, constructing the wheel that extracts the code, and then transcribing each passage to unlock the Shakespeare Code.

Now here's where it gets really interesting. According to the findings, the Code reveals...or depending on how you understand your history, confirms the theory that Francis Bacon is the illegitimate son of Queen Elizabeth, The Virgin Queen. I can see why she wouldn't want that bit of information flying about.

I enjoyed the walk through history, and I especially enjoyed the feeling of being a part of the "big secret." "The Shakespeare Code" gives the reader a sense of feeling or thought that they've joined a secret society of learned people who challenge the mainstream ideals of history and literature. Just because your 7th Grade Lit teacher says so, doesn't make it truth! It's a thought-provoking book, and I have already recommended it to several friends.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating! Worth the $10 investment.......2006-08-07

As someone who's always had an inkling that there's more to this idea of "Shakespeare" than meets the eye, it's enlightening and encouraging to get the details. Written in a way that really keeps you wanting to read, without even deviating from the facts -it's impressively done. I thought The DaVinci Code was good but this is way better. One of those cases where the truth is more interesting than the fiction.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone.

    Book Description

For years, a popular debate has been raging about whether Shakespeare was really the author of the many plays and poems published under his name. Doubters argue that Shakespeare could not have accomplished such a great feat, pointing instead to other well-known figures. Richard Ramsbotham offers a completely different perspective by reexamining the available evidence and by introducing unexplored aspects of Rudolf Steiner's spiritual-scientific research. The author discusses Shakespeare's life as an actor, mysteries of the debate such as the enigmatic Psalm 46, and the persistent question of Francis Bacon's connection with Shakespeare.

Recently, a movement has been gaining ground that sees Bacon himself as the covert writer of the great works attributed to Shakespeare. Not content with this radical claim, that movement also wishes to place Bacon on the primary pedestal of British civilization, as a kind of patron saint of the modern scientific age. The author provides substantial confirmation of a definite connection between Shakespeare and Bacon, but one that radically challenges the conclusions of the Baconian movement. The author also opens remarkable new perspectives on King James I and his connections not only with Shakespeare and Bacon but also with Jakob Böhme, Rudolf II, Rosicrucianism, Freemasonry, and the original Globe Theatre.

Published 400 years after the Hampton Court Conference of 1604, Who Wrote Bacon? offers a timely contribution to these themes, and shows how they remain critically important to our understanding of the twenty-first century.

Thief. Informer. Double-dealer. Pimp. Will Shadwell may not be the most moral of men, but to gentleman spy Henry Gresham, he is invaluable. In the reign of King James I, a man must know his enemies to survive, and Shadwell is one of Gresham's best sources. Then Shadwell is brutally murdered. Before Gresham is able to establish why, he is summoned by the man he fears most: Robert Cecil, the King's Machiavellian Chief Secretary. Cecil wants Gresham to investigate Sir Francis Bacon's private life, but when Gresham begins his inquiries, he uncovers a plot so audacious it is scarcely believable, involving a conspiring clutch of Catholic lords and a trail of gunpowder underneath the Houses of Parliament.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating historical novelization.......2003-03-01

Robert Cecil, Chief Secretary to King James I, sees Papal intrigue under every rock. However, he especially feels the opportunity is perfect to consolidate support for His Highness against the growing espionage presence of the Catholic enemies, Spain and France.

While the foreign spies agitate the oppressed English Catholics, Robert seeks proof of sexual depravity against his most dangerous foe Sir Francis Bacon. He assigns Henry Gresham to obtain the evidence that will fry Bacon. He quickly learns how the agitators inadvertently strengthen the position of their greatest oppressor Robert with their anti-James plots, notably a scheme to blow up Parliament and replace the Scot with a Catholic on the throne. Keeping his own confidence, Henry soon realizes that the diabolical Cecil hired the leaders, Guy Fawkes and Thomas Percy, with an apparent double cross in mind to "earn" the favor of the King. Already in danger due to his secret Catholic beliefs, Henry wonders what to do with what he learned because Cecil will gladly string him up along with the other "traitors".

THE DESPERATE REMEDY: HENRY GRESHAM AND THE GUNPOWDER PLOT is a fascinating novelization of a critical moment in English history that vividly provides the audience with a deep look at surviving the civil religious squabbles that engulfed the English throne in 1605. The story line is cleverly devised so that the history with real people is interwoven into a superbly written espionage plot. Fans of historical tales including romance readers though there is no love story will immensely appreciate Martin Stephen's delightful retelling of the Gunpowder Plot.

This book is an easy read. I read it in a few hours. One side of the page has facts and tips, the other has poetry writen by the authors. I didn't care for the poetry, but if you are feeling loss and questioning yourself, there are definite words of hope & wisdom. Like life, not everything is going to apply to you necessarily, but there is something in it for everyone. I found it comforting to know that the things I am thinking and feeling are put in words, so that I can better understand the process and know that I am on the road to healing. I have found myself picking up this book again and again and finding insight. This is a book to keep in your personal library or to pass on to friends & family or anyone going through a break up.

4 out of 5 stars one partner in relationship left.......2007-08-29

This book is more about how to continue after one partner in a relationship left. It has very little to say about how to cope when one partner dies. I did find a few ideas in it. Can be read in an hour or less.

                  5 out of 5 stars My Family's Bible.......2007-08-23

This book came into my life when I was just a teenager. A family friend gave it to me and since then it has been passed around all the women in my life. It is straight forward and honest and over the year I find myself returning to it during my most difficult times. Today the book has been dog-heared and and holds notes and letters from the various women who I have passed it on to. It is our family's Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Great little book........2007-08-10

This is a classic. It helped me many years ago survive the death of a friend. It helps others when their relationships hit the rocks. I gave it as a gift to someone dear to me. The wisdom is still true today.

I bought this book first in 1979 after the death of my spouse. I read it many times, allowing myself to cry and grieve. I found it so helpful, I have loaned it out to many other widows and purchased it for several more. If purchasing for someone else, wait a few months and then present it as a possible help to them.

No matter what type of loss one experiences, this small book is a great help. I was glad to find it (as a used copy) at Amazon since it seems to be out of print. I hope it will be reprinted.

It helped me a great deal and I have bought several as gifts for someone going through a loss.

The Art of Saying Goodbye by Dr. Arthur Samuels was a tremendous help during the days and weeks after the death of my wife. I was especially impressed with the meditation techniques and the guidance Dr. Samuels provided. He says in order to survive the trauma of losing a loved one, you need to learn to love yourself all over again. I would recommend this book to anyone.
