    Book Description

Matthew B. Ridgway was a significant figure in United States history. He commanded the 82nd Airborne Division in the invasion in Europe; he succeeded MacArthur in Korea; he was the U.S. delegate to the United Nations; he served as Supreme Commander of the Far East and Supreme Commander in Europe. He was counselor to four presidents, helped found a university research center on national security, and was a powerful influence in national affairs for 40 years. Using Ridgway's personal papers, George Mitchell offers a unique and compelling view of this authentic American hero.

    3 out of 5 stars Decent review of a great soldier's life.......2007-07-12

I have to respectfully disagree with the previous reviewer's take on this book. While the book is choppy at times in the way that it is formatted, it is still a very good biography.

The previous reviewer stated that it was disappointing because it did not compare to Carlo D'Este's biography of George Patton ( A Genius for War). However I do not feel that this is a fair comparison. How many military biographies can compare to this classic?

I think that this book should be judged on its merits and in my opinion; the author does a good job of telling the life story of this great American General.

Each chapter is dedicated to a certain section of Ridgeway's life; Korea, Joint Chiefs of Staff, etc and while at times this does make the book seem choppy, it still is a pretty good book if you want to learn about Matthew Ridgeway.

One last note about the book, to his credit the author George C. Mitchell does manage to accomplish something very important when writing a biography. It left me wanting to know more about the subject and read more about Ridgeway's life.

I definitely recommend it if you are looking for a good introduction into Ridgeway's career and life.

2 out of 5 stars Well written but limited.......2006-01-06

First of all I can say that I am a great admirer of Matt Ridgeway. The book is overall exceptional well written but lacks the personal sense that Carlo D'Este put into Patton: Genius for War. It seemed that the author has a title for each chapter then expanded this based on topic. A chronological order to Ridgeway's history would have made the book more substantial.

      Book Description

General Matthew Ridgway is widely regarded as one of the most important military figures in American history. Ridgway is the riveting story of his life and career, from his childhood as a soldier's son to his extraordinary military triumphs. During World War II, General Ridgway created the legendary 82nd Airborne, introducing paratroopers into our military system. He personally led the daring predawn raid on Normandy by dropping behind enemy lines, and played an essential role in the Allied success on D-Day. In 1951, Ridgway took over our demoralized troops in South Korea and, within six weeks, had turned the tide of the war.

Ridgway's flawless commitment to his work continued after he retired from the military field. He was appointed Chief of Staff in 1955, the highest honor that could come to an army officer, and a post which Ridgway met with the same skill and intelligence that he brought to World War II and Korea. The general continued to play an important role in American government after he left office, arguing vehemently against our involvement in Vietnam and nuclear weapons development.

Ridgway tells the story of a hero who reshaped the American military and profoundly affected our century's history.

          Book Description

Detailing the life and legacy of one of America's highest profile military commanders, this biography looks at how Ridgway maintained his corporatist ideals through the critical days of World War II and the Cold War. The qualities that Ridgway honed on the battlefields of Europe and Korea were the same that he would draw upon in more politicized jobs as NATO commander and US Army Chief of Staff, and in retirement as the leading military critic of American intervention in Vietnam. The global scope of Ridgway's involvement, in wartime and peacetime, from Europe to Latin American to the Far East, provides a unique opportunity to examine the policy and ideological issues of the day. Early chapters chronicle Ridgway's younger life and early postings from West Point to China to Sandino's Nicaragua, and his participation in various campaigns during World War II, from Sicily to Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge and on into Germany. Later chapters cover his work as a military diplomat under President Truman, including his work on arms control and the Inter-American Cooperation Act. Soffer then examines Ridgway's key role in the Korean War and his ability as a theater commander, and then considers his actions under President Eisenhower and beyond, as well as Ridgway's active support for Ronald Reagan in the 1980s. This work will prove valuable to students of military history and the Cold War.

          Book Description

Written by the best-selling author and longtime editor of The Saturday Evening Post Clay Blair, this powerful study of Gen. Matthew B. Ridgway offers both a detailed account of the legendary general's illustrious World War II career and a comprehensive history of American airborne operations in Europe. Considered one of the Allies' brightest and most forceful commanders, the general fought in every major battle in the Mediterranean and Europe, and his 82nd and 101st airborne divisions came to be called the best in the U.S. Army. But the book makes clear that Ridgway had to justify his faith in airborne warfare because the first drop by the 82nd-during the invasion of Sicily when the pilots were still green and the equipment faulty-had been a fiasco.

Blair tells the story in gripping battlefield narrative to capture the experiences of the soldiers who served in these elite units at Salerno, Naples, Anzio, Normandy, and elsewhere. At the same time he provides a frank analysis of the development of the airborne techniques and of the attention given to the political-military-strategic issues that influenced their deployment. With Ridgway as its central figure, this dramatic account includes such other major players as George Marshall, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Mark Clark, and Bernard Montgomery, along with such future greats of American airborne warfare as James Gavin, Maxwell Taylor, and Tony McAuliffe. Densely packed with information, the book, first published in 1985, is widely acknowledged for its engagingly honest analysis of Ridgway and airborne operations in Europe.

          4 out of 5 stars A Good salute to the 82nd Airborne.......2005-06-20

If you want to read a fitting tribute the 82nd and the Officers of it, then here you go. It is a good solid read but like his other Book on US Submarines it concentrates way too much on the Officers Corp. As a former Enlisted Man it would of been nice to hear a little more about the other side of the house.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent history, but quite biased.......2003-08-28

Make no mistake, this book will give you an excellent history of General Ridgway and the 82nd Abn. I like it for that.

I have a few problems with this book though.
          1) Even though Ridgway was in command of the 18 Abn Corps, units that were not the 82nd or sucessfully supporting the 82nd were largely ignored. There are many pages of the defense of St. Vith. There is one paragraph on Bastogne. The accomplishments of the units that were not the 82nd or helping them are handled briefly, regardless of benefit to the overall mission.

          2) The author is decidedly pro- West Point. All officers are identified by their West Point class and who their classmates were. Non West Pointers are ignored unless they do something truly amazing. Enlisted men are completely ignored unless they earn a DSC or better (although he ignored a MOH winner in the 101st).

          3) He is almost completely uncritical of Ridgway. Mistakes are glossed over or blamed on someone else and acheivements are overly highlighted. I would not call this a balanced history.

These said, I would still recommend this book for it's detail. I would not recommend this book if you are going to use only one source for your research.

4 out of 5 stars Objective, rather than subjective history.......1998-10-13

Mr. Blair once again comes through in his in-depth analysis of the US Army Airborne during the Second World War. Especially illuminating is his exposure of LTC Reuben Tucker as THE outstanding wartime regimental commander of the not only the US Army, but of the entire US military. This book is plain and simply a good read. I recommend it to anyone who is serious about military history and battle command.

Called Doctor Mirabilis (Latin for "astounding teacher"), there doesn't seem to be an area of science or philosophy this amazing man did not explore. Here is a fine example of Bacon's esoteric thinking. A great read.

It's a lot easier for the layperson to tell when a fellow human is feeling poorly than it is to understand the inner workings of a cat. For one thing, people use words to tell you what hurts and when it started. And for another thing, we, as fellow people, have a little insight into what's healthy human behavior and what isn't. When the toddler cries and then vomits lunch, we sense something's not right, even if the child can't verbalize the problem. But when your cat brings up a hairball, does that mean she is ill? When your cat meows, it's hard to know if it means "Hey, pet me," or "I feel rotten."

To know when cats are acting oddly, you need to know what normal is. The Veterinarians' Guide to Your Cat's Symptoms starts off describing a healthy cat body, from skin, hair, eyes, ears, and teeth to the inner workings of the cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems. This picture of feline health is followed by a chapter on how to keep those systems healthy, with advice on choosing a veterinarian, plus vaccinations, spaying and neutering, nutrition, and litter boxes.

Part 2 does an excellent job of covering accidents, medical emergencies, and diseases that could threaten your cat. This section discusses broken bones, burns, and poisoning; conditions such as hypoglycemia, pneumonia, seizures, and pyometra; as well as infectious and parasitic diseases. For each, it tells you what to look for in your cat and when to dash off to the veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. There's a chapter on feline first aid, as well.

And if you suspect your kitty isn't up to snuff but aren't sure? Part 3 is where you can ensure that your cat's behavior is normal, with more than 130 common feline symptoms and flow charts explaining how to interpret them. Associated signs, possible conditions, and recommended actions are listed for each symptom. Perhaps your cat is showing signs of depressed appetite, with difficulty breathing and possibly coughing as well. These could be signs of cardiac disease, pneumonia, or even lung cancer, and a trip to the emergency clinic for x-rays is strongly suggested. On the other hand, maybe your cat is eating wool. The chart says this condition (termed Wool Eater, a form of compulsive behavior) is not unusual for Siamese cats, but could lead to vomiting or intestinal obstruction; the recommended action is to put the wool out of kitty's reach, and maybe see a veterinarian for behavior-modification medication. Symptoms such as depression and lethargy are treated in depth, as are diarrhea, gagging, lameness, nasal discharge, and various sorts of vomiting.

With appendices that list congenital defects and disorders, poisonous household products, and a glossary of veterinary medical terms, this is a remarkably useful reference for anyone who loves cats. --Stephanie Gold

                          Book Description

The experts reveal how to interpret and understand your cat's symptoms
and what steps to take to ensure its health.

This comprehensive and practical book is designed to assist cat owners in understanding their pets' bodies and health based on signs and symptoms of disease, and in determining the most common medical problems that might cause particular symptoms.
Adopting the "decision chart" format from popular symptom guides for human ailments, such as the American Medical Association's Guide to Your Family's Symptoms and Take Care of Yourself, five leading veterinarians have designed a user-friendly chart system that will guide a pet owner from noting the symptom and observing the cat's behavior to understanding the associated signs of an illness, the possible conditions, and the best steps to take. Filled with more than 150 charts in an easy-to-follow two-color format and medical drawings, The Veterinarians' Guide to Your Cat's Symptoms is the indispensable reference for cat owners. It not only considers the problems of sick and injured pets, but also addresses the needs of healthy animals. It has all the information a cat owner needs:

¸  What a healthy cat should look like
¸  Flow charts to the 200 most common symptoms
¸  Behavioral issues, such as spraying and clawing
¸  Emergency first aid, including transporting an injured cat
¸  A glossary of veterinary diagnostic tests and medical terms

With this unique combination of medical information and advice, plus an innovative chart system, The Veterinarians' Guide to Your Cat's Symptoms will ensure that your cat really does have nine lives.

4 out of 5 stars Basic Guide, Helpful for Quick Reference.......2006-03-27

I was pleased with the covering of information about normal cat behavior and normal cat functions--so as to better determine such with my own cats. However, the book is not comprehensive in its covering of abnormalites of feline health. I do like that it lists little icons next to various symptoms and diseases referring to the urgency of the situation. This book is a nice base covering of information to know about your cats in general, and for several problems that might arise over their life span.

This book really helped us out because we thought our cat was not only crazy, but also sick. Sick and crazy is a bad combo. Turned out she just had allergies and typical cat spaz behavior. The book goes in depth to let you know what is going on with your pet so you don't have to shell out the big bucks to a vet. If you do have to go to a vet for something you can help them pinpoint the problem much quicker if you have done some research using the book beforehand.
Worth the money if you own cats.

                          .
I read everything I could find at the local library concerning diagnosis of symptoms displayed by my cat. The technical books in the library were useless because of the plethora of technical terms that the average layman like me hasn't a clue on the meaning of. Also, the organization, or should I say lack of organization, of the other books made them tedious to follow. Many references and cross-references ad infinitum. I had to tease out answers to simple questions and, even then, didn't fully understand the points they were trying to make. I've had cats for most of my life and thought I was an expert, but I was stumped and worried about my little friend's symptomatic behavior. I needed help, and fast.

Five minutes with the guide to symptoms by Garvey, et al, answered my immediate question and led to a quick solution. The book is filled with well rendered drawings that illustrate and complement the text. The people who put this book together obviously know cats intimately and understand cat behavior. The writing is easy to understand and to the point. It also explains the "whys" behind the facts. The table at the back is both comprehensive and easy for the average reader to understand. This is a book to be USED, not just read.

No book is perfect but this one comes close and gave me what I needed. ....I'm totally satisfied with it.

This is exactly what we expected it to be: A very helpful listing of symptoms/signs your pet could be displaying and what to make of it.
One major drawback of the volume is a political one: We are happy to live in a country decidedly more civilized where the surgical removal of a cat's claws is simply illegal. We could have well done without any advice regarding this disgusting notion: I mean if you are fonder of your furniture than of a living (pet or no) animal, then please get more furniture, not more pets...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference. Contains much valuable information........1999-09-23

The unique chart form in the second half of this book provides cat ownerns with an invaluable quick reference when a cat is ailing. My cats, like most, often do not complain when they are not feeling well, and I must figure out what's wrong. This is an excellent, helpful guide.

The first atlas devoted entirely to New Zealand wines and wine-making. Visually stunning and authoritatively documented, this Atlas builds on the award-winning success of the author's prior tome which ran to five editions. As New Zealand wines rise to top international status in world competitions they are increasingly sought after in Europe and America. The curiosity and interest in learning more about these extraordinary wines intensifies. No other book or even group of books provides as much information and insight into this magnificent wine-growing nation, the terroir, the people and the end product. Each region is detailed with first-hand essays on the producers, vital statistics and tasting notes. An illustrated history of the wine industry, technical overview of the climate, soils and wine styles and thirty specially commissioned maps establishes this as the essential reference on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Everything You Could Want.......2003-09-03

There's not much more to say than that this is a fantastic treatment of its subject. The book is well laid out, fantastically researched, beautifully photographed and a joy to look at (let alone read!). It is little wonder this won the Montana Book Award - Cooper has meticously researched his subject.
The book starts off with an introduction (as they tend to do) then explores the fascinating history of viticulture in New Zealand before tracing the impact of New Zeland wine on the world market. We also get to explore the most commonly grown grape varieties in New Zealand and how they are characterised in New Zealand wines.
General information out of the way, Cooper then explores in detail the wine regions of New Zeland with fantastic maps, photographs and notes on individual wines and wineries.
The book is also indespersed with profiles of key players in the New Zealand wine industry and history.
To sum up - its a beautiful book and a must for anyone interested in the area. It is by far the most comprehenive treatment of New Zeland viticulture, and worthy of the accolades it receives.

The judges' commented that "the final decision on the winner of the Montana Medal was influenced by our collective view that the Wine Atlas of New Zealand could not possibly be improved upon - it is elegantly written, superbly designed and produced and its impact on the community has been considerable. Michael Cooper has written many superb books on wine in New Zealand - this is unquestionably his Magnum Opus."

My recent month-plus tour of wineries in Australia and New Zealand was greatly based upon the excellent research, reviews and contacts using this fine reference. As a budding wine writer, collector, and head of a local Enological Society in the Pacific Northwest,Halliday's Atlas has been the virtual bible enabling the design of both the tour and subsequent writing. As my primary interest was a focus upon pinot noirs, my tour began in Australia where I visited Halliday's own Coldstream Hills Vineyard. His work provide a roadmap enabling me to contact other prominent pinot noir producers in the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula-Main ridge, Stonier, Yering Station, Paringa Estates and others. While there, I also made contacts and was invited to a new release winetasting of New Zealand wines held in Melbourne. Quite amazingly, the first person I met was the great James, himself. It was fun and a privilege to share wine tasting experience and comments.
From there, the tour extended to the whole of New Zealand. Again the Atlas laid the groundwork for my visits, enabling me to meet most of New Zealand's greatest owners and winemakers, including John Buck at Te Mata,Kevin Judd at the famous Cloudy Bay,Neil McClallum at Dry River, Grant Taylor at Gibbston Valley and many others.Naturally, covering nine separate wine regions entailed tasting many other prime quality varietals in such warmer climes as Waiheke Island and Hawkes Bay with their magnificent cabernets and Bordeaux blends, plus gorgeous chardonneys, etc. In all cases, the Atlas gave regional and subregional data and exacting descriptions of "terrior" necessary to a serious study.Halliday is, in my book, a more comprehensive writer and reviewer of "new world" wines than even Jancis Robinson or Robert Parker. He also adds the direct insights of his winemaking in Australia and his pioneering of pinot noir developments "down under". His reputation as a critic is simply impeccable and his easily read writing style, while detailed, is at once comprehensive and comprehensible. It is a must read and essential reference for serious oenophiles and fellow wine tourists.
