4 out of 5 stars Some books are more true than others.......2003-02-21

Great read, if taken slightly tongue in cheek. Remember he was a spy and while he does much to reveal the inadequacies of the German military machine and extol that of the British, he was a man used to lying and deceiving. His view of 'truth' might just differ from yours and his whole account is best viewed sceptically. There is a lot that does not ring true. The coincidence of him being invited to the very party where the very man assigned to hunt for him is present. It makes good, exciting reading. Is it true? How could a man who was German pass himself off to establishment Englishmen as their fellow countryman and it not be noticed? His accent and use of English must have been exceptionally good. Americans could be fooled but the English? Highly unlikely. I think there is some truth in the book but he has, for artistic reasons done substantial embellishing. I agree with the other reviewer, it would make a great film or short TV series. Lots of uglier sides to life shown, high drama and comedy thrown in. We should seach for an historical perspective though to get a more rounded out picture of the man and what he really did. I would really recommend the book-I read it in a day and a half and was so sad when it finished. A very satisfying read, leaving you wanting more of the same.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE TOP TEN SPY MEMOIRS.......2002-10-28

This is a real gem of a book. It was recommended to me by a friend and the very next day I found a 1938 Penguin Edition staring out at me in the second-hand book store. For the 50cents it cost me, it was one of the best reads in my life.

Von Rintelen was a German Naval Officer in WWI and was one of those cobbled together in desperate times to work on espionage eassignments all over the world. Speaking either North American or British English, he could disguise himself effortlessly as a businessman interested in buying armaments for the western allies in New York. While America was still neutral Von Rintelen planted bombs on transports and munitions ships, disseminated false imformation, and even organised his own labour union (inviting US congressmen to speak at some of its conventions) all usually with the help of disgruntled Irish Americans wanting to help cripple the English war effort. All the while he established a string of false companies to buy and trade in NY.

The vignettes are incredible and worthy of a hollywood thriller. He ends up at a hotel party in Massachussets and finds out that the British Naval Attache assigned to look for him is attending the same party that night. Von Rintelen, decides right away to join the party and introduces himself to the British Attache as .... of all people... a British Naval Commander sent from London on special assignment to apprehend this Von Rintelen chap! (Really himself). Of course without instantaneous email or transfer of pictures over the wire, the British Attache has no idea that he is indeed talking with Von Rintelen (hillarious!), while Von Rentilin, over drinks, proceeds to draw out all the information British Naval Intelligence know on hilself.

He was eventually arrested in the Channel while on a Dutch Liner heading back to the country disguised as a Swiss National.

This is WWI and the ruthlessness of later wars is not present. His opponents are mainly honourable "genetlman" where he enjoys the commraderie of other English Officers whilst in confinement in England. His first glimpse of "democracy" happens when he is shipped back to the US as common spy (despite the fact that this may have been technically illegal under international law --- even at the time) and incarcerated in Atlanta until 1921. That he only got 4 years for espionage and sabotage is a interesting indication how far the US has come: in 1917, during wartime, they gave German Spies guilty of espionage & sabotage 4 years in jail. In 2002 the US is executing teenagers and the mentally handicaped for capital crimes -- progress?

His descriptions of Southern Jails is also interesting and his empathy with the criminals is an interesting refrain for this German gentleman.

A highly interesting and fast paced book that should be made into a movie.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant account of behind the scenes sabotage.......1998-12-09

Interesting story of Europe dragging America into war. The final chapter on his imprisonment until long after all other POWs were freed and the harshness of southern prisons.

5 out of 5 stars Biography of Author.......2007-09-18

Background

Von Rintelen came from a banking family in Germany and his father had strong connections in the American banking community. Captain Von Rintelen also spoke fluent English and had a considerable understanding of commerce. Due to this reasons his superiors in German Intelligence, during World War I, picked him for a dangerous and daring in the United States.

The Mission

He was ordered to sabotage American ships carrying clothing, food and munitions to the British and French. In the U.S. he contacted Franz von Papen (who later became Chancellor of Germany). Von Papen had being running an already conservatively successful operation in the States. He had backordered vast quantities of American war then did everything he could to tie up the production of the companies he did business with. Added to this he established a dummy corporation, Bridgeport Projectile. Through this company he bought up gunpowder which he then hoarded and destroyed. He then competed for munitions contracts which he failed to deliver on when won. Von Rintelen found this all too sedate for his liking. He intended on taking a more direct approach.

With the help of a German sympathising technician he began seeding the holds of American freighters with time-delayed incendiary devices. The idea was not to sink the ships nor endanger life but rather to `encourage' the crew to dump the munitions overboard in order to save the ship.

He took a leaf from von Papen's book when he set up a dummy corporation which obtained valuable munitions contracts from the Allies. Not only this prove successful in its aim but also provided him with a reasonable capital to maintain his operations. Taking advantage of his newfound position von Rintelen founded the Labour's National Peace Council. This was a trade union on the waterfront and was responsible for numerous strikes which further halted the Allies' war effort.

Exposed

One German who was not happy with von Rintelen's success was von Papen. He felt that he was over shadowed by his compatriot. He sent a telegram to Berlin accusing von Rintelen of being a liar and a loose canon. The telegram was picked up and deciphered by British Naval Intelligence. Some commentators argue that von Papen used a code that he knew had been broken by the British, he wanted von Rintelen out of the picture. As von Rintelen sailed back to Germany on a neutral Dutch ship he was captured at Southampton, England. He was interned there until sent to a federal penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, USA where he spent three years.

Epilogue

He returned to Germany in 1920 a forgotten man, blaming von Papen for his capture. Disillusioned he moved to England where he died in 1949.

        Book Description

Immanuel Kant's Dreams of a Spirit-Seer, on Emanuel Swedenborg, has mystified readers since its publication in 1766 during Swedenborg's lifetime. Its unusual style and content have led to two opposing interpretations. Most Kant scholars regard the work as a skeptical attack on Swedenborg's mysticism. Others, however, believe that Kant regarded Swedenborg as a serious philosopher and visionary, that Swedenborg had a powerful influence on Kant's mature critical philosophy, and that the book both reveals Kant's profound debt to Swedenborg and conceals that debt behind the mask of irony.

This unique edition includes translations of Kant's other writings on Swedenborg, as well as texts by other writers, illustrating the book's genesis and reception.

Dreams of a Spirit-Seer provides all the documents one needs to assess Kant's most mysterious work.

        5 out of 5 stars Kant's flip side.......2003-02-22

This book is supposed to be the funniest thing that Kant ever wrote, and I really wanted to swim through this book before I tried to figure out what I thought was so funny, but even treading water is a challenge when the current has such a fierce undertow, and the serious "First Part, Which is Dogmatic" demands some consideration, though it ends with the famous prudence which demands "that one make the pattern of one's projects appropriate to one's powers, and if one cannot reasonably attain the great, to restrict oneself to the mediocre." (p. 40). This collection of DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER and other writings from the Swedenborg Foundation Publishers, edited by Gregory R. Johnson, which puts everything that directly related to KANT ON SWEDENBORG into this book, allows a serious consideration of Johnson's view that self-defense was the essence of Kant's approach. Religious controversies had career consequences in those days, and Kant had to show he was laughing "because Swedenborg was a controversial figure. Rumors of interest in Swedenborg would have seriously jeopardized Kant's prospects for academic advancement. This is sufficient motive for him to write a book exculpating himself of the suspicion that he took Swedenborg seriously." (p. xvi). Johnson was writing a doctoral dissertation on Kant the first time he read DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER in 1994, and he cites it in the notes as his COMMENTARY, (Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America, 2001). The acknowledgments are dated January 2003 (p. xxvi) and I feel lucky that I received this book as soon as I did.

I have been thinking about this book for a long time before I wrote this review, since this is the work for which Kant wondered if he had gone too far in jest. My first surprise was that Kant himself (like Hegel, he avoids mentioning names) is not entirely clear about whom he meant to be writing until page 49: "I come now to my purpose, namely, to the writings of my hero." He called his preface "A Prospectus That Promises Very Little for the Project" (p. 3) and the final paragraph of his introduction attempted to make his readers share the situation which he found himself in. "Furthermore, a large work was purchased, and, what is worse still, was read, and such effort should not be wasted. From this originated the present treatise, which, as one flatters oneself, should leave the reader in a state of complete satisfaction, in which the principal part will not be understood, the other not believed, and the remainder laughed at." (p. 4). In general, I approve of the steps Kant took to show a more enlightened view than the journals of his day. The major contrast in Johnson's Introduction is with Johann August Ernesti, who denounced Swedenborg in 1760 as a heretic in his "New Theological Library." For attempting to find meanings in the early books of the Bible which were not obvious, Swedenborg was accused of "pervert[ing] the Sacred Scriptures by the pretense of an inner sense, is in the highest degree worthy of punishment." (p. xxiv). When someone in Wurttemberg published a book on Swedenborg, "at Ernesti's urging, the Wurttemberg government declared the book heretical, confiscated all copies, and even ordered private citizens to surrender their copies on pain of arrest." (p. xxv). When a professor of Theology at Tubingen "urged a more open-minded attitude toward Swedenborg[,] Ernesti responded with yet another scathing review, asserting that Clemm's defense of Oetinger and Swedenborg was an offense that would have been worthy of the death penalty in earlier times." (p. xxv). Kant shows how modern people could be much more philosophical about these things, and though those people are all dead, there is a nice justice in the number of people who are still reading Kant and Swedenborg, even if they hardly know anyone else who does.

The prime point in the Introduction by Johnson resides deep in personal philosophy, that professional philosophers might understand as, "that Kant's mature critical philosophy is best seen as a synthesis of Rousseauian and Swedenborgian elements (the influence of Leibniz and Hume being primarily upon Kant's elaboration of difficult technical questions once his basic vision was already in place). . . . although Kant's vision of the cosmos is more Swedenborgian than Rousseauian, it is Rousseau who provides the essentially pragmatic arguments that allow Kant to embrace the content of Swedenborg's visions but discard his enthusiasm." (p. xx).

The notes are helpful. Only a translator is likely to notice, "Here Kant embraces the idea of general as opposed to particular providence." (p. 161, n. 26). This is what makes Kant a philosopher, "the notion that God governs the universe by framing general laws. Particular providence is the notion that he governs the universe on a case-by-case basis." Swedenborg is so religious that he argues "general providence is meaningless without particular providence." There is more on this in Johnson's (as yet, unpublished) COMMENTARY. Kant [Part I, Second Chapter, Paragraph 3] was talking about connections in the immaterial world, the former connections, before getting trapped where "nothing hinders even the immaterial beings that affect one another through the mediation of matter from also standing in a special and constant association and as immaterial beings always exercising reciprocal influences on one another, so that their relationship mediated by matter is only contingent and rests upon particular divine provision, whereas the former is natural and indissoluble." (p. 16)

I would like to check another translation to see if this is even close to what anyone else would think. In 1992, David Walford and Ralf Meerbote had their translation published in Kant, THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY, 1755-1770. "Walford's translation is highly accurate and very readable. Indeed, it would be hard to justify a new translation of DREAMS at all were the Walford translation available in an inexpensive paperback edition." (p. xxiii). It soon might be, if that is what you would rather have.

5 out of 5 stars Kant accepted that our spirit conjoins two worlds........2002-12-10

This work is often described as Kant's most "mysterious". The mystery lies in the fact that here in this treatise the Great Professor of Metaphysics unreservedly admits in the existance of "immaterial natures in the world", i.e. spirits and a spirit world. There is nothing mysterious about this statement, it is just that modern readers refuse to accept it. I've never understood why this should be so hard for some, since Kant's System of critical idealism is perfectly consistent with this view. Kant claimed that we could never know the true nature of the world around us, the true causes of sensations. He always held that there is a real world that we can never accurately know. This real world corresponds with a "spirit world", or if you prefer, a platonic world of Ideals lieing outside of our human perception of time and space. Kant unmistakably states that "We should ... regard the human soul as being conjoined in its present life with two worlds at the same time...." Nothing could be more unambiguous, especially considering his references to the writings of Swedenborg.

I think that this book has been largely ignored because it is just too divergent from the rational empiracism of the modern scientific mind. The scienitfic materialist conveniently ignores the fundamental questions of material "reality" that Kant couldn't ignore. Furthermore, when the Prussian government banned this work it set into motion the series of events that culminated in the profound physical and spiritual disasters of the 20th cetury- and beyond.

It may yet be proven that the ideas in this forgotten book are far more "real" than the modern materialist concensus of reality....

From the wife of the late Dr. Robert Atkins, here is an inventive cookbook that will allow low carb devotees to keep the faith without cutting down the fat. Grounded in the carb counting, fat allowing formula that launched millions of dieters, Veronica Atkins has designed a book "to make doing Atkins a permanent part of your life."

Following a refresher course on the four phases of Atkins, she includes 250 easy to follow recipes and cooking tips geared for people close to their weight goals, in which she underlines the essentials of low carb ingredients and preparation (substitute wheat for white, splenda for sugar, nuts for breadcrumbs, cream or broth for flour). Gathered into three main sections ("day by day", "on the weekend", and "party and holiday menus"), recipes range from family dinners, brownbag lunches and snacks to brunch dishes and camping treats. Singles "tired of dividing recipes by four" will also enjoy the "cooking for one" section, and those who fear the holiday temptations will find inspiration to stay on track in such creative fares as Atkins-friendly Thanksgiving side dishes, low carb Xmas eggnog, Zucchini Hanukkah latkes, Superbowl pomegranate guacamole, Oscar Night chocolate martinis and a dozen uses for leftover matzo.

Readers may be distracted from the simplicity and freshness of the recipes by a few zany suggestions (alphabetizing spices to save time) and the marketing of the Atkins brand products in the many recipes that use Atkins mixes, pastas and flavorings. Yet the book's creative approach will assure the faithful that a low carb diet can be a moveable feast. --Barbara Mackoff

3 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Source for a Beneficial Lifestyle .......2007-09-24

It's too bad and unfortunate that Dr. Atkins has passed. With his widow compiling and publishing this cookbook, it keeps his memory and his beneficial lifestyle alive. The book is informative, easy to read and easy to navigate.

2 out of 5 stars Very limited application.......2006-06-19

Granted - even in the introduction (which I instruct any reader to read thoroughly), Veronica Atkins mentions that this cookbook is intended mostly for those at 'maintenance' level, where only 'healthy' eating (rather than weight loss) is the goal. Were someone not seeking to lose weight, or at any rate no substantial amount, the main dish recipes could be useful - they could find that they no longer needed snacks and the like because they had sufficient protein not to be ravenous. But most of the recipes are useless for low carb dieters who either actually want to lose weight or do not want to regain weight they have lost on the Atkins programme.

A few main dish recipes and side dishes are valuable, but most of the items in this cookbook are of little value. I doubt too many people are worried about relatively low carb Halloween drinks, for example. There are other dishes which anyone wishing to lose weight on a low carb programme would never touch, such as pasta.

I found it rather annoying. Robert Atkins was a true pioneer in the nutritional field, and now the very approach which many dieters found to be a godsend is being sacrificed for this new 'healthy nutritional approach not aimed at weight loss.' The recipes too often are a blatant advertisement for Atkins products - none of which are necessary to following the diet at all. I imagine this book was intended to attract a new market, or to satisfy those who want to think that Atkins dieters are increasing their intake of grains, but I found it largely useless.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing offering from a usually trusted source.......2005-04-25

Don't get me wrong: I love Atkins and I'm a low carber myself. But I don't know what they were thinking when they put this cookbook together. Oh wait, I do know: they were thinking that total carb count is all that matters. Anyone who really understands low carb knows that it isn't just the total number of carbs you consume: where those carbs come from matters at least as much. So I was surprised to see recipes in this book calling for ingredients most low carbers wouldn't dream of touching on a regular basis. There also seemed to be an over-reliance on Atkins products, and overall, it looked too much like someone took a regular cookbook and just substituted artificial sweeteners for sugar and Atkins bake mix for flour and thought the recipes would fly. Not only did I make the decision not to buy this book, I didn't even like it enough to check it out of the library after reading through it. I hope the next Atkins book is closer to the mark.

5 out of 5 stars Every Recipe is a Winner!.......2005-01-13

I received this cookbook for Christmas 2004 and have already made a half dozen or so recipes - every single one was thoroughly enjoyed by my non-low carbing husband! I figure that Veronica Atkins has been eating low carb longer than just about anyone - she has a lot of great recipes to share! If you want to make low carb living your way of life, you will want to have this cookbook on your shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Practical.......2004-11-05

You don't have to be on the Atkins Diet to use and enjoy this book. This low-carb cookbook offers over 250 recipes designed to let you indulge in gourmet type dining, with minimal carbs. The book is a compilation of popular low-carb recipes from the Akins Center, and is written by the wife of the late Dr. Robert Atkins. It is printed on glossy paper, which is great for use in a kitchen environment, and many of the recipes are complemented by full-page color photos of recipe presentations. It's a beautiful book, that you can also use as a coffee table book, but its practical recipes makes it more than just decoration.

The book includes 100s of tips for low-carb dieting, and each recipe includes detailed nutritional statistics. The recipes are divided into sections for 30-minute meals, tight budgets, bag lunches, snack, and desserts. About half of the book is dedicated to recipes for specific holidays and seasons. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Tasting and Healthy!.......2003-01-19

This book has great recipes for wholegrain breads. If you're looking for recipes that avoid white flour and have healthy wholegrains instead, this is the book for you.

For the most part, it is also low sugar, which is why I purchased it. There are a few recipes with honey and molasses, though. My husband has raved about all the breads I've made from this book. It gives recipes for 1 and 1 1/2 pound loaves.

5 out of 5 stars Good for baking with whole grains.......2002-07-24

This is a great book for anyone who owns a bread machine and wants to make different types of whole grain breads. I have found many whole grain baking bread books, but none that were specically targeted for the bread machine. This book is made specifically for bread machine bakers, which is great. She explains all the different types of flours, grains, etc. This is very helpful to learn how to make appropriate subsitutions, etc. I really like this book and am looking forward to consuming a wide variety of whole grain breads!

5 out of 5 stars Best healthy bread machine book yet!.......2002-06-10

I am thoroughly pleased with the recipes I have found in this book. Every one I have tried has turned out beautifully. It is almost impossible to find good spelt flour recipes, particularly for the bread machine and this book instructs how to use spelt flour to make most baked goods. If you are looking to bake healthy bread or just to expand your baking experiences, I recommend "Smart Bread Machine Recipes" thumbs up to the professional as well as the everyday home cook as there is a little something here for every baker to learn!

            4 out of 5 stars Good Bread.......2002-04-09

I have made 3 of the bread recipes so far and the bread has turned out very good. I would recommend this bood for anyone looking for low fat bread recipes, there are several that require alot of manual work outside the bread machine.

5 out of 5 stars Tasty and Healthy across the board.......2000-02-03

This book consists of all whole grain bread machine recipes. The first part goes into detail about all the components necessary to create healthy breads/rolls, etc. in the bread machine. All ingredients are described in an easy to read manner. There are recipes using "ordinary" whole wheat flours. Then there are the recipes using the more exotic flours, such as spelt and kamut. While some of these flours are expensive and sometimes hard to find, I have tried many of the recipes and have never been disappointed. I have purchased the book many times for friends and recommend it highly as a means to increase fiber and grains in products that are very tasty and are created from this easy to understand recipe book.
