1914. The biography of Lord Lister, whose work affected man's relation to sickness and disease more fundamentally than the work of any other philosophic physician devoted to these problems. He was far more than a great surgeon: he was far more the founder of modern surgery.

Not for the Beginner.......2005-03-31
This book is written for the writer who has solid writing skills (description, dialog, tone, etc.) and a solid idea or set of ideas but can't decide how to convey those ideas. In other words, you have a solid feel for the characters, and you know at least your major plot turns, but you have specific, underlying ideas you want to convey, and you're not sure how to effectively express them. Essentially, it's for the author who's trying to write more than a basic thriller or other escapist novel (and he gives some solid recommendations for writers working on those types of stories, as well).
Tobias consistently reminds us that everything in a story should support the theme, and 'everything' covers a lot of ground, so he looks at theme as it affects a wide variety of story elements. He clearly states that some types of stories emphasize certain elements and other types emphsize others. In essence, he is giving guidelines for writers to plan their writing and organize a story based on the elements most common to a particular theme.
One reviewer was upset that Tobias states there are only five major themes. Actually, Tobias says the pattern of a story will usually take one of five forms, based on the theme of the story. In another book (20 Master Plots), he points out that Aristotle believed there were only two plots, forza and forda, while Tobias describes twenty (I highly recommend that book, as well). Tobias isn't trying to stick every writer in a box, he's trying to help them take the shortest possible path toward writing the story they want to write.
This isn't the book to go to when you're learning how to write. Try Damon Knight's Creating Short Fiction or Rust Hills' Writing In General and the Shoft Story In Particular. This is the book you go to when you have something to say, when you finally find a story and characters that are important to you, and you want to make sure you do them justice.
Don't say I didn't warn you.......2005-02-02
This book is subtitled how to build a strong narrative structure. In fact, the book is not about structure at all. It is about pattern-a different thing. And even the discussion of pattern is a mishmash: "Pattern in Strategy, Pattern of Audience, Pattern in Structure, Pattern in Plot, Pattern in Action, Pattern in Character, Pattern in Thought, Pattern in Place, Patterns in Style." (This is the table of contents.) The statements in each chapter are equally vague: "Strategy is both map and journey." You understand that? Perhaps as inspiration or as communication by osmosis this book might be useful. But what results will you obtain? There's the risk.
The discussion of theme follows--if you'll forgive the expression--the same pattern. "Theme is...the central concern around which a story is structured." (p. 97) It is your "inertial guidance system." It is a "viable, working pattern." There are exactly five types of theme (no more and no less): theme as plot, theme as emotion effect, theme as style, theme as character, theme as idea. Got it? Good. This book is for you. But if you're saying, "Huh? Say what?", then you'd better find some book that knows what it's talking about well enough to say it clearly.
Quality overview of narrative structure.......2004-09-25
I have to take exception with the two previous reviewers who claim "Theme and Strategy" is merely okay. Although the book is geared to beginners (like most in this series), it nonetheless unfolds the critical aspects of structure, which will help any aspiring writer take their work to a new level. The mastery of narrative structure is perhaps the most crucial element to any work of narrative fiction, therefore the better a writer understands it the better prepared that writer will be to turn out a quality product. This book, and others like "Story", help get us there.
Tobias' writing is lucid, which allows him to communicate some fairly esotric subject matter with necessary clarity. He synthesizes complex ideas into easily understood chunks without sacrificing depth. This makes it easy, then, for the new writer to take the plunge into a richer universe where theory blends well with practical application. Not an easy task as many books either fly into the ether of pretensious literary theory or the muck of over-simplified formula. Tobias straddles the line precariously, but still manages to maintain his balance and focus.
Frankly, those looking for a step by step guide to plotting a story should reconsider the writing path, because writing fiction is a quirky blend of craft and talent. And while talent will only take you so far, the same is true of craft. Tobias, however, will help bridge that gap if you're ready to take the journey.
Theme and Strategy is required reading for those writers looking to master their craft, but not for those looking for cookbook solutions. It makes an excellent contribution to this fine series.
His other book is better..........2003-07-31
This book is ok.
It talks from a top-down viewpoint instead of getting into the nitty-gritty of plotting.
A very large portion of the book is in Tobias sharing pieces of literature as examples to support his ideas/story analysis. This was good and bad. Good because it seemed to give credibility to what he was saying but Bad because if you remove the examples he could have presented all his points on two or three pages.
He touches briefly (even with an appendix in the back) on the 36 different plot types. Interesting thing is fours years later he writes a more detailed book entitled, 20 Master Plots. What happened to the other 16? His second book is better in my opinion when it comes to planning what type of story you want to write from a theme/strategy point of view.
I would recommend the Marshall Plan of Novel Writing or The Weekend Novelist if you want a very structured, detailed approach to plotting. Use the Tobias books for overall concept but don't think you can use it to help you create a major plot piece. This is a great book for beginners, but I'd check your local library before dishing out the bucks for this hardback.
Good for beginner writers.......2001-11-07
I got this book in a local library. It has the basic ideas for beginner writers, who have absolutely no idea of how to do it. It talks about strategies of writing and what you should do before and while writing your book. The explanations are very long, and sometimes it seems that Ronald Tobias was just trying to write more pages. Although the book is divided into many parts, I rarely saw any difference between any of them. They seem to say few ideas over and over in different words with different examples. In other words, if you want some light reading, 100% guarantee that you'll get what he's saying, you're a beginner, and you have enough free time, read this book. Otherwise, don't. I'm sure I can write everything he wrote in 20 pages.

Handy Manual for Runners of All Levels.......2006-05-20
Regardless of your running level, this concise collection of essays addresses many issues and will surely provide useful information and inspiration from which the runner can pick and choose. Interesting and informative, it will reinforce or realign your current regimen with clarity and effective advice.
Great Information.......2006-03-22
I learned several new stretches and ways to add a little bit more efficiency to my running style. Very Helpful
Read the chapters - pick and choose what you think is important.......2006-02-01
This is not a traditional training book like Daniels or Coe and Martin, nor is it one of the scores of "Explain Everything About Running to the Beginner" books out there. Instead, it focuses on the aspects of training with which even experienced runners may be unfamiliar. For example, it discusses lifting weights, stretching, dietary concerns, etc. in addition to topics directly related to running such as peaking for a race, improving leg speed, addressing long-term aerobic development, multi-pace training, etc.
This is a valuable book because even if you know a lot about running, you will probably find something new in here. Keep in mind what many of the authors say must be taken with a grain of salt. The jury is still out on whether lower-body exercises and form drills will make you a better distance runner, for example. If you tried to do all the supplementary training discussed in this book, you would probably be working out three hours a day at least. You'll have to try different things and decide for yourself if they are helping your running or just wasting your time and energy. But hey, if you're like most serious runners, you're willing to try almost anything if it will keep you healthy and make you faster. So check the book out for yourself.
It's All Here.......2005-05-24
In Run Strong 13 writers, with expertise and experience as coaches, trainers, exercise physiologists, physical therapists and runners (four Olympians among them) contribute 12 chapters covering all the topics essential to achieving success in middle-and long-distance running.
As a runner who has been competing for over 30 years, and as a certified running coach for 17 of those years, I believe that in order to be the best runner you can be, you should incorporate a number of other factors in your training besides running farther and faster. Once you understand the importance of efficient running mechanics, both for injury prevention and enhanced performance (well presented by several of the authors), you are prepared to include the activities that lead to the neuromuscular coordination that good form requires: core-strength; running-specific strength; balance; and dynamic flexibility through the full running range of motion. You are willing to learn as much as you can about fueling your body, allowing it ro recover from training and racing, and maintaining it should injury or illness strike.
Run Strong covers all of these essentials, and does so in manner easily accessible to the non-scientist. It includes a generous supply of photos illustrating key strength and stretch moves, tables summarizing recommendations, and sidebars adding interesting highlights. The editor has done a good job of cross-referencing chapters when the authors mention areas covered in another chapter. And yet the chapters can stand alone, so that the busy runner/reader can pick one topic here, another there, and come away with useful suggestions to be tried in the next workout or program design.
As a long-time coach, I have many how-to running books on my shelves, not to mention all the running fiction, biographies, autobiographies and combinations thereof. Run Strong will definitely find a place on the shelf nearest my workplace.

Book Description
Nellie Letitia mcClung (1873-1951) is recognized as a key figure in Canadian history as well as Canadian literature. Her two-volume autobiography provides a remarkable and very readable account of a truly extraordinary life. McClung is best known for her involvement in the 1929 "Person's Case," in which the British Privy council ruled in favour of an appeal by the "Famous Five" against the judgement of the Supreme Court of Canada tht women did not qualify legally as persons. McClung had, however, been a high profile figure, as a suffragist, politician, and writer, in Canadian politics and literature for many years and remained so well into the 1940s. Her autobiography provides unique insight into Canadian public affairs in the first half of the twentieth centure. Equally interesting ae McClung's accounts of her early days as a child, teacher, and young wife and mother. with her fine eye for detail, she makes the Canada of her time come vividly alive for readers.
Originally published in two volumes, McClung's autobiographies found a wide audience from their first publication in 1935 and 1945. They have never before been available in a single volume. For this re-issue Veronica Strong-Boag and Michelle Lynn rosa have written a substantial introduction and added explanatory notes that illuminate the woman and the historical context for modern readers.

Product Description
As a Christian mom, I have had only one personal goal for my children. I want to pass the faith along to my children. Personally I don't really care if they ultimately imitate my lifestyle or repeat my life experiences in areas outside of my faith. I am not intent on reproducing myself in them. My goal in mothering has been to help them to the place where God could reproduce Himself in them. I wanted to pass my faith along to them. As a mom I certainly was not perfect. That was not my goal. My goal was to be blameless before them. That is, I would keep short sin accounts with my boys. When I sinned against them, I determined I would quickly confess, repent and ask their forgiveness. It is especially humiliating to ask a two-year old to forgive something you said in haste but I wanted to walk blamelessly before them. As much as I knew to do, I made sure there was nothing left undone between us. I wanted to run well. I wanted to finish strong with my sons, having handed down the faith to them through instruction, exhortation and example.
Obviously, our children have to decide for themselves if they will take the baton of faith and run their own race but there is much we can do to help them desire to taste and see the goodness of the Lord. Beloved runner, in the race of mothering we are not competing against one another. We each must run our own race while competing against the demands and distractions of the world, the flesh and the devil. We must fix our eyes on Jesus and run well. We must unpack the baggage of the past and leave it on the bench or we will never finish strong. We must refuse to carry any besetting sin lest it weigh us down and slow our stride. We must untangle ourselves from the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life lest these lusts trip us up and prevent us from making forward progress. We have to lay aside the guilt of the past, the pressures of the present and the fear of the unknown future and run. We must run well. We must finish strong. As we run we want to hand down the baton of our faith to the next generation without stumbling or fumbling the hand-off.
Join Jean Stockdale for a look into God's Word for timeless truths on handing down your faith to toddlers and teens. Having completed the task of raising and releasing two sons into the adult world, she has turned her attention to raising up the next generation of godly moms. As you work through this interactive workbook, she will gladly stand in the grandstands of your life and cheer you on towards the finish line! It is her momma's heart's desire to see you run well and finish strong.
Customer Reviews:
Incredible!!.......2007-10-08
Jean Stockdale has truly changed my life and the way that I mother my two girls. She has so much wisdom and provides so much insight on how to raise Godly children. She is also very practical on how to handle such things as sibling rivalry, discipline, and releasing your children one day to go into the real world. I have learned so much from her. I recommend this book VERY much. You will be blessed.
Highly Recommend.......2007-10-07
Jean Stockdale is such a Godly example of what a mom should be. I love how Jean incorporates her own life experiences as a mom as well as God's word to teach. I recommend this to any mom or expectant mom. It is very insightful and uplifting.
Life Changing!.......2007-10-04
The author's sense of humor from her own experiences as a mom mixed with truths from God's Word make it an easy read. She shows how relevant and applicable the Word is to our every day lives as moms. She teaches how important it is to be a student of God's Word and how to pass that on to your "built-in disciples". Even those times you feel exhausted as a mother, she shows you how to run your race well and to finish strong. Excellent study! Would highly recommend to all moms!!!
LOVED IT!.......2007-10-03
I absolutely LOVED this Bible Study! What an encouragement for busy moms to give it all they've got for the sake of their children. I love the author's honesty about women's issues and transparency about her own life. I highly recommend it!

Nice book on Balsamic Vinegar.......2006-05-02
This review is written from the perspective of someone that has been studying cooking for 25 years, and concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years. I have more than 100 cookbooks on Italian cooking and have traveled to Italy many times. I am a tough critic on Italian cookbooks.
This book is subdivided as follows:
Introduction
Openers
Side Dishes
Pasta
Main Dishes
Finishes
Basics
Resources
The introduction is a history of the making of Balsamico. It explains the guidelines under which the product must be produced to be labeled as Balsamico.
If you love Balsamic vinegar, you will love the recipes in this book. I am always looking for new ways to use Balsamic, which is why I purchased this book. The recipes in this book will be very familiar to those that know a lot about Italian cooking. Some of them differ from the originals by the addition of the Balsamico.
My criticism of the book is that it is too short. The recipes that are included are very good. But, there are just not enough recipes included in this book. I don't think that 47 recipes is an adequate number for a book. I would give this book a rating of 5 stars for the complete picture of the production of Balsamic. Due to the small number of recipes that section only warrants 3 stars. The overall score for this book, in my opinion, is 4 stars.
Balsamico! Molto bene!.......2002-04-30
I have always enjoyed the tartness balsamic vinegar added to salad greens, but not until I had it on strawberries at my girlfriend's house was my interested peaked to explore new taste/cooking adventures with it.
Recently I was having lunch in a small italian pizzeria in Portland and this book was displayed. The cover screams pick me up and peruse. I knew I had to have it. The explanation of the making of this wonderful essence is educational, the photography is crisp and inviting, but the recipes are the real treasures! Bravisimo!
Excellent recipes and history of balsamic vinegar.......2001-04-01
I received this cookbook as a gift and am very happy I did. The recipes are not only tasty but fun to make and truly unique. I never gave balsamic vinegar the credit it deserves to be so diverse and capable of so many flavors. From balsamic salad dressings, to using this wonderful vinegar in entrees such as chicken and fish, to even including it in desserts, you will be happy you have this cooking companion. This is the first cookbook that my friends typically flip through while in my kitchen. It's not only excellent for ideas and recipes, but also gives you a 5 page history on the vinegar which will really help you to appreciate it. Balsamic vinegar is about $3.00 for a good size bottle and is found in almost all grocery stores, yet, I don't believe that until you have cooked with it, as these recipes will show you how, will you be able to truly know what this vinegar is capable of doing to your taste buds! Balsamic vinegar can be tart and exciting uncooked - simply add some to your favorite olive oil and use it to dip bread or vegetables in and it can be sweet and rich if boiled for 5 minutes - which will reduce it to a dark syrup consistency. Trust me, any cook worth their salt needs this handy little guide to take them into the world of Balsamico!
