An excellent read!.......1998-07-27
So many books have been written about the adventures of military pilots that you'd think that only commissioned officers flew. Actually, there were and are many non-commissioned flyers as well. These enlisted gunners, radio operators, navigators, flight engineers, and technicians...who were sent into the air right out of high school...had many interesting stories to tell too. Until recently, their adventures have been largely ignored. Thanks to authors like Jack Sauter, however, the story of the enlisted military aircrewman is finally seeing light of day. Sauter was a Navy enlisted man who flew as a radar operator on Douglas Skyraiders around the time of the Korean War. It is so refreshing for this modern day naval aircrewman to read an aviation book written from the long-suffering enlisted man's perspective, instead of from from the typical 'pampered' officer's perspective. Its a great book and I highly reccommend it to all my brother aircrewmen. White hats off! to Jack Sauter!

Purchasing this book is as necessary as the Incarnation!!.......2006-05-18
Sr. Ingham does a spectacular job presenting an introduction of one of the greatest (and too often misunderstood) medieval philosopher and theologian. This survey of the thought and work of one of the great Franciscan scholars is really as entertaining as it is enlightening. This is wonderfully written and proves to be the best introduction to Scotus that I have found currently in print.
If you read this book and still want more I would recommend Ingham's "The Philosophical Vision of John Duns Scotus."
In the meantime - Buy this book and enjoy reading it!
A doctor for our time.......2005-10-11
Scotus for Dunces opens one of history's greatest minds to readers of the 21st century. Being a lover of Gerard Manley Hopkins and a Franciscan friar, I had sooner or later to go in search of John Duns Scotus. How many times could I come across references to haecceitas, and his teachings on the Incarnation, Immaculate Conception, and the Trinity, before I finally asked, "Who is this man?" I was fortunate to discover Dr. Ingham's book, singular in its clarity, at the very moment when I wanted to meet the Subtle Doctor. I was doubly fortunate in that it has only recently appeared.
Scotus died too young to write the Summa which might have clarified his teachings, and few non-specialists have the time or energy to wade through his dense writings. When I asked older friars about him, they could cite no book, but only the classes they attended many years ago.
Dr. Ingham simplifies our reading of the Subtle Doctor by clearly stating what John Duns Scotus taught, without his endless - and always respectful - expositions of those positions with which he disagreed. She especially demonstrates the Franciscan spirit of John Dun Scotus, his optimism, gratitude, reverence, love of beauty, and joy.
Scotus was more than a thinker about God, he was a lover of God. When many Christians insist upon the righteousness of God; ignoring the Son of God's obedient humility and tender vulnerability; it is good to peer into the mind of John Duns Scotus. He looks at God through the human eyes of Jesus and says with Saint Francis, "You are Good, all Good, supreme Good..." His God is happy; always and endlessly happy; and endlessly pleased with Jesus who claims every man, woman and child as his own beloved. Given his daily practice of Franciscan prayer, Scotus cannot imagine a vengeful or spiteful God. No one can make God unhappy, not even Adam and Eve.
Scotus and Dr. Ingham also demonstrate the desperate need we have for clear thinking about existence; that is, ontology. If the promises of science, technology, and the Enlightenment are unraveling under the impact of Christian, Jewish, and Muslim fundamentalism; if technologically sophisticated children are being taught how to solve problems rather than how to think about problems; we should return immediately to the classroom of this philosopher-theologian. We must learn again how to do both philosophy and theology.
Too many people think science has replaced philosophy when science is only one type of philosophy. They cannot compare one system of thought with another, and think that thinkers of old were only primitive. Scotus speaks clearly to the thoughtful, reveals beauty to the troubled, and offers hope to those who suffer. He assures us of what the saints have always taught us, "All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well." (Julian of Norwich)
To study philosophy is to meet mano a mano with the greatest minds in human history. This book is for people who love to think. I am half-way through my first reading of it and looking forward to my second.

The Franciscan William of Ockham was an English medieval philosopher, theologian, and political theorist. Ockham is important not only in the history of philosophy and theology, but also in the development of early modern science and of modern notions of property rights and church-state relations. This volume offers a full discussion of all significant aspects of Ockham's thought: logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics and natural philosophy, epistemology, ethics, action theory, political thought and theology. It is the first study of Ockham in any language to make full use of the new critical editions of his works, and to consider recent discoveries concerning his life, education, and influences.

The finest history of philosophy ever written.......2000-08-11
Warning: this history of philosophy is neither for the faint-of-heart, nor the faint-of-mind! Frederick Copleston's monumental 9-volume history of western philosophy has never been equalled, nor is it ever likely to be. The life's work of this Jesuit scholar, the history is remarkable both for its breadth and its open partiality: Copleston believes in Thomas Aquinas, and in any issue that Aquinas made a decision on, he makes his bias clear, and then goes on to explain the opposing point of view fairly and honestly. This volume of the late middle ages and early renaissance concerns itself largely with Ockham and Suarez, with a smattering of philosophers between. I would have liked larger sections on Machiavelli and Francis Bacon, but those are easily available elsewhere. Because Copleston started with the Greeks in his first volume, and then obviously read all the primary and secondary texts for that and each succeeding volume, he brings a breadth of context to the history that still amazes me. For anyone seriously interested in philosophy, all nine volumes are to be acquired as soon as possible. It doesn't get much better than this.
Book Description
This book makes available for the first time an English translation of William Ockham's work on Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, which contains his theory of scientific demonstration and philosophy of science. John Lee Longeway also includes an extensive commentary and a detailed history of the intellectual background to Ockham's work in the Latin Middle Ages.
Longeway puts Ockham into context by providing a scholarly account of the reception and study of the Posterior Analytics in the Latin Middle Ages, with a detailed discussion of Robert Grosseteste, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and Giles of Rome. In a series of appendices, Longeway includes shorter translations of some important related work by Giles of Rome and John of Cornwall.

Provides deep context for Ockham's Science & Razor.......2007-03-16
Demonstration and Scientific Knowledge in William of Ockham: A Translation of Summa Logicae III-II: De Syllogismo Demonstrativo, and Selections from the Prologue to the Ordinatio by John Lee Longeway (University of Notre Dame Press) makes available for the first time an English translation of William of Ockham's work on Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, which contains his theory of scientific demonstration and philosophy of science. John Lee Longeway also includes an extensive commentary and a detailed history of the intellectual background to Ockham's work. He puts Ockham into context by providing a scholarly account of the reception and study of the Posterior Analytics in the Latin Middle Ages, with a detailed discussion of Robert Grosseteste, Albert the Great, Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and Giles of Rome. In a series of appendices, Longeway includes shorter translations of some important related work by Giles of Rome and John of Cornwall.
In his introductory discussion, Longeway examines the exact character of the highest sort of demonstration (demonstratio potissima), the relations of the empirical sciences to mathematics, natural causation and the manner in which natural laws come to be known, the possibility of natural knowledge, our knowledge of God, and the relation of theology to the other sciences. Longeway discusses the way in which scientific epistemology and theory of demonstration corresponds to the metaphysical position of its interpreter, in particular to the Neoplatonism of Grosseteste, the radical Aristotelianism of Giles of Rome and Albert the Great, the more moderate Aristotelianism of Aquinas, and the nominalistic empiricism of Ockham. Throughout the book, Longeway makes a case for Ockham's importance as the founder of empiricism in the West.
Demonstration and Scientific Knowledge in William of Ockham will interest philosophers and historians of science and logic, as well as those who study medieval philosophy or early modern philosophy.
The medievalist needs no convincing that William of Ockham (ca. 1285-1347) is worthy of study. At one time Ockham's views might have been regarded as a clever but uninstructed sign of the decay of Scholastic discourse, but, with the work of such scholars as Philotheus Boehner, Ernest Moody, and Marilyn McCord Adams, those days are now receding into the past. Nonetheless, outside the small circle of students of medieval philosophy and logic, a translation of Ockham's work on the theory of demonstration, even combined with a broader study of its Scholastic background, may seem to require some justification.
This is unfortunate, for contemporary philosophers should find Ockham a fascinating figure. He is the founder of European empiricism. Like Locke and Hume, he relied on the logical analysis of language to ground a rejection of Platonic metaphysics, and he found the source of all our concepts and knowledge of the natural world in our experience of particulars. Moreover, he avoided that error of Early Modern empiricism that now seems most objectionable: the attempt to construct our public world from purely subjective experience. Ockham is a direct realist, relying on the causal relation between concept and object to establish the concept's reference. In his view, what makes belief cognition is the right causal relation between the knower and what is known, not the possession of a sufficient justification for one's belief. Indeed, the accusation of skepticism brought against him, and the skeptical bent of some of his later followers, arises from a typical justificationist misapprehension of his response to skepticism, for Ockham manages without the implausible claim that we can ever have a subjective guarantee that any of our beliefs about the natural world is infallible.'
Ockham's theory of scientific demonstration, the subject of the texts translated and discussed here, presents his conclusions in philosophy of science. In their discussion of demonstration, Ockham and his predecessors approached some of the most fundamental problems of a scientific empiricism, both ancient and modern. How are concepts of natural things formed on the basis of sensory experience? What is the relationship between the notions of everyday people, from which a scientist necessarily begins his research, and the more sophisticated scientific conceptions of these things-- can we and the scientist even be said to be speaking of the same things? How are causal principles rooted in the real natures of things, and how is it possible to know them? How does functionality occur in the natural world? What is the nature and function of scientific knowledge, and how is it related to knowledge of a more ordinary sort? All these questions are dealt with from the standpoint of a scientific realism rooted in the conviction that scientific explanation captures the causal structure of reality.'
But the texts translated here are not only philosophical documents. They depend on, and purport to interpret, Aristotle's Posterior Analytics, and they should be of considerable interest to the modern interpreter of Aristotle. Ockham focuses on a problem that has recently come to the fore in the literature on the Posterior Analytics --how does one demonstrate an attribute of a subject?
Book Description
In this work Ockham proposes a theory of simple predication, which he then uses in explicating the truth conditions of progressively more complicated kinds of propositions. His discussion includes what he takes to be the correct semantic treatment of quantified propositions, past tense and future tense propositions, and modal propositions, all of which are receiving much attention from contemporary philosophers. He also illustrates the use of exponential analysis to deal with propositions that prove troublesome in both semantic theory and other disciplines, such as metaphysics, physics, and theology. This type of analysis plays an essential role in his substantive philosophical and theological works, and in many cases then can hardly be understood without a prior acquaintance with this section of the Summa.

Excellent Translation of a difficult work.......2000-08-18
This is a translation of Ockham's work titled the "Summa Logicae" (Part II). The translators are Alfred J. Freddoso (who also translated the "Concordia" by Luis de Molina) and Henry Schuurman. Much of what Ockham is dealing with in this particular work is the philosophy of language and logic. Ockham discusses the truth conditions of propositions (indicative sentences). He begins at the best place, with the most simple or basic propositions and works his way to the more complicated propositions. Past tense and future tensed propositions are dealt with as well as modal propositions. This book is not basic reading. In fact, if you do not have a background in logic you will labor through this text. However, if you do have a background in the study of logic then you will probably enjoy this book. Some of the table of contents are "On the Classification of Propositions," "What is Required for the Truth of an Indefinite Proposition and of a Particular Proposition," "On Universal Propositions," "On Past Tense and Future Tense Propositions," How to Find Out When a Proposition, One of Whose Extremes is an Oblique Case, is True or False," "On Conditional Propositions, " "On Conjunctive Propositions," "On Hypothetical Propositions and Their Properties," etc. Moreover, the book contains a very helpful introduction by Freddoso which helps to identify and explain what Ockham is dealing with in this work. This is a much needed translation of a Philosopher whose works are not translated into English like they should be.
Book Description
William of Ockham (c. 1285-c. 1387) was the most eminent theologian and philosopher of his day, a Franciscan friar who came to believe that the Avignonese papacy of John XXII had set out to destroy the religious ideal on which his order was based: the complete poverty of Christ and the Apostles. A Short Discourse on Tyrannical Government is an attack on the claims of the medieval Church, specifically the papacy, to universal spiritual and secular power. Written at the time of the emergence of the European nation-states, Ockham's work issued a direct hard-hitting challenge to the claims of limitless papal power. The text is accompanied by a full bibliography, a chronology and an introduction setting his work in its intellectual and historical context.
Book Description
There have been huge advances in our ability to diagnose autism and in the development of effective interventions that can change children's lives. In this extraordinary book, Lynn Kern Koegel, a leading clinician, researcher, and cofounder of the renowned Autism Research Center at the University of California at Santa Barbara, combines her cutting-edge expertise with the everyday perspectives of Claire LaZebnik, a writer whose experience with a son with autism provides a rare window into the disorder. Together, they draw on the highly effective pivotal response approach developed at the center to provide concrete ways of improving the symptoms of autism and the emotional struggles that surround it, while reminding readers never to lose sight of the humor that lurks in the disability's quirkiness or the importance of enjoying your child. From the shock of diagnosis to the step-by-step work with verbal communication, social interaction, self- stimulation, meltdowns, fears, and more, the answers are here-in a book that is as warm and nurturing as it is authoritative.

An Excellent Buy.......2007-09-26
There are books on autism that I recommend that parents and heathcare professionals read. This is one book that I recommend that they don't just read but buy and keep it for future references.
There is such a wealth of info on autism here. If you can only afford to buy one book on autism. Let this be the one.
The authors take a highly optimistic view of treating autism. However, they make no bones about the fact that the treatment process is long, tedious and can even be painful. The first chapter deals with diagnosis and dealing with the initial shock.
From the second chapter onwards, the authors get down to earth with managing the autistic child. They go down to every detail on how to encourage communication. Start from the very simple and basic. Turn sounds into words. Reward, reinforce ...
Next, it's down to breaking the self-stimulating or injury cycle. Introduce replacement behaviour. The authors go into the dos and don'ts for breaking repetitive actions. Why punishment doesn't work for them. There is also a very practical FAQ section that deals with the common concerns and problems faced by parents and care providers.
The following chapters deal with imparting social skills, providing education and family support. There is so much useful info that it's impossible to finish, let alone digest in one reading. Buy this book and keep referring to it as you manage autistic children and see them grow up.
Gives you hope.......2007-09-25
My son was diagnosed with ASD at 2. I read many books and this was my favorite. It was clear, easy to read and most of all it gives you techniques on how to help your child overcome. It gave me hope when I was facing his diagnosis.
Very positive and encouraging!.......2007-06-01
Although I have not purchased this book, I have read a copy that I borrowed from a library.
While the author of this book doesn't guarantee that autistic kids will improve suddenly as soon as their cargivers start giving them the help they need, she talks about how much they can progress eventually if their caregivers give them all the help they need. I really like books that tell us about how much autistic people can progress eventually if they are given every chance to progress as much as they can, and that also give examples of those who have made great progress already, as a result of being given every chance to progress as much as they can. In fact, I really like all books that offer solutions to major problems and/or better alternatives to the status quo!
Treasure Trove of Information.......2007-05-13
This book can be a great addition to the library of people with children who have been diagonosed with autism. It is definately a book with shows a ray of light at the end of what seems to be a dark never ending tunnel.
Renewed Hope.......2007-05-07
I liked this book. After reading a book that smashed all my dreams for my son I read this Overcoming Autism and it renewed my hope for a better future for my son. It's an easy read, light hearted and positive uplifting book

A Classic for any Cookbook Collection.......2006-12-14
I have had this cookbook since it was first published and I still find that it is one of the cookbooks that I reach for most often. Beautiful photography. I don't hesitate to try a new recipe on company as I've never had a failure. I consider it to be a "Classic".
Best cookbook in my collection.......2006-02-21
This is one of those cookbooks that you can pick up hours before a dinner party, open it to any page, make the dish and have rave reviews. There are VERY few dishes in here that aren't good.
This is an older cookbook, but definitely worth looking into adding to your collection!
A Genuine Gem!.......2005-01-16
Beyond Parsley is one cookbook I always have nearby -- and I have many, many cookbooks. I am renowned among my family members and friends for e-mailing special recipes -- and many have come from this special gem. I have too many favorites in the book to list but if I had to select just ONE, I would choose Cossack Cheese. That one is a WINNER in every respect, and has gained the love of people around the US to whom I have sent the recipe. D. Ray Fuller Jr., Dallas, Texas
The one cook book you must have!.......2003-07-15
We would go hungry without this book! This is the cook book we use far and away more than any other. We have even started some family holiday traditions from the recipes i.e. the green beans with pears - amazing! You never have to worry about making a recipe because they are all fantastic. It is a regular gift from us and we have been told many times it's the receivers new favorite cook book as well. Buy it, it is any cook's must have!
Delicious recipes, beautifully presented.......2000-12-06
This is probably my all-time favorite cookbook (and I have many, many cookbooks). The recipes range from simple to prepare meals for a busy weeknight to elegant meals for entertaining guests or clients. My family's favorites are the Chicken Romano (very easy, very elegant) and the Mizzou Barbecue Sauce. I whipped up an extra-large batch of the BBQ sauce last year and gave it with my grandma's brisket recipe to our friends and neighbors. They raved about how good it was (and well it should be given that Kansas City is famous for having some of the world's finest barbecue). The cookbook also has inventive and tasty vegetable, dessert and pasta recipes, as well as a brunch section which I use every year for a Christmas brunch. I highly recommend this book. If you love to cook, you will not be disappointed.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful cookbook.......2004-12-18
I've had this cookbook for several years and I think it's terrific. I haven't made a recipe from it that disappointed me.
The recipes are not difficult to make, so anyone should be able to cook from this book. The food turns out a bit sophisticated. You could easily use some of these recipes for a dinner party.
Two of the recipes I really enjoyed from this book were Mustard Ginger Pork Chops and Minestrone. The pork chops were wonderful - you basically add a simple marinade (pretty easy to do!). The minestrone is wonderful! It is probably my favorite soup ever. It uses ham to give it a smoky flavor, then you add a number of veggies and pasta to it, and top it off with cilantro and parmesan cheese. This is a great soup to make at the beginning of the week and have it for lunch every day for the rest of the week. I've made this soup so many times and I've even tried to freeze it (although I wouldn't recommend that). This is also a good soup to fix ahead of time if you're going to have guests. Add a salad and some bread and you have quite a nice lunch.
Besides the recipes, the photography in this book is amazing. It's quite different than other cookbooks. I would have to consider the photos as "art" because they are of the quality of framed photographic art. I keep thinking of taking this book off of my cookbook shelf and using it as a "coffee table book" because it is so beautiful.
Overall, I would recommend this cookbook to almost anyone. The recipes are simple but elegant and the pictures make the book a joy just to look through.
My most marked up cookbook.......2001-12-20
This book will hardly fit back on the shelf: Yellow post-it notes hang from its margins, nearly a pad-ful so far, each marking a high-taste recipe. I've only had the book a year, but it has fast become a favorite.
Above and Beyond Parsley is just that.......1997-10-25
I have prepared many of the recipes from this book and have found all I have tried to be wonderful. They are easy to follow, and the collection of recipes is diverse and appeals to the most discriminating of tastes. This book also provides visuals on the art of artistic meal presentation. Of the cookbooks that I own, I know if a meal is prepared from this book all will be happy, especially me!
