An invaulable, informative contribution to Civil War studies.......2000-07-04
Quest For A Star is a collection of the Civil War letters and diary entries of Colonel Francis T. Sherman of the 88th Illinois, ably edited and with commentary by Knight Aldrich, Sherman's great-grandson. Thanks to his father's political influence, Sherman won an officers commission and commanded a brigade for much of his early service. He saw action at Perryville, Stones River, Missionary Ridge, and other battlefields. He was captured near Atlanta and endured three months in a Confederate prison before being released in a prisoner exchange. During the last months of the war, he served with General Philip Sheridan in the Appomattox campaign. His letters to his father and his diary entries reveal vivid descriptions of wartime experiences, insights into the volatile politics of the times, criticism of the incompetence of superior officers (especially General Don Carlos Buell), and more. Aldrich's commentaries give Sherman's observations an historical perspective, and draws upon his years as a professor of psychiatry and family medicine to offer fascinating speculation about inner conflicts that may have served to fuel Sherman's ambitions and political beliefs. Quest For A Star is an invaluable and much appreciated contribution to the growing body of Civil War era biographical literature.

Book Description
This fifth and final volume completes the critical edition of the letters of French philosopher Claude Adrien Helvétius (1715-1771), author of the controversial De l'Esprit (1758), and of his wife, née Anne Catherine de Ligniville (1722-1800), who ran her own salon in Auteuil after her husband's death. The essential component in this last volume is the detailed index - an indispensable instrument for researchers who wish to make full use of the correspondence. The volume also includes four new letters discovered since the appearance of the first four volumes, errata, additions and modifications to the critical apparatus, the text of letters excluded from the edition proper, genealogies of the families of Helvétius and his wife, and a chronological list of all letters mentioned in the edition.
The previous volumes of this edition have enjoyed international acclaim. "All students of the French Enlightenment will be deeply indebted to D.W. Smith and his team for this superbly conceived and organized collaborative achievement. When complete the Toronto Helvétius will rank among the truly outstanding examples of twentieth-century editorial and bibliographical scholarship." (David Williams, French Studies)

Customer Reviews:
Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes -- Or Less!.......2007-03-10
I purchased this book for my daughter who was dealing with gestational diabetes. The recipes are simple, delicious and healthy. This book should be on every busy cook's shelf and used by anyone who wants to eat a healthy diet even if they don't have diabetes.
Simple and Quick.......2001-10-24
My husband was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes last year. It was a shock and I went crazy buying cookbooks on Amazon to help me deal with his new dietary requirements.
This cookbook is awesome. I've been working my way through it and have found the recipes simple (not a huge laundry list of ingredients) and sophisticated. On occasion they need a little salt (haven't come across a recipe that asks for salt yet!).
My husband has been very pleased with everything I've done out of this one and always asks - what's next? Can we try something new out of that 30 minute book?
Buy it - for the price - it's totally worth it.
(by the way, there is nothing exotic about pumpkin seeds, peanut oil and oyster sauce - unless you live in a cave).
Disappointed..........2000-07-30
Unless you live in town or a city, can afford to purchase countless ingredients in Miss Webb's recipes from alternate sources such as health food stores or expensive grocery stores, don't count on finding many of these ingredients in your average run-of-the-mill grocery store in a small town. These meals may take little time to prepare, but if you're not in a higher income-bracket and you have a family to feed, you probably won't like this book.
Easy healthy cooking ideas.......2000-01-22
This book is true to its title. I loved that it listed some main "healthy" staples at the beginning of the book that everyone should have on hand. I also really liked the easy meal ideas at the beginning of the book for those nights you need recipes that will use whatever you have on hand in your cabinets. Some of the main recipes were a little more complicated than I had hoped. Still, overall this was an excellant choice and I know that I will use it for years to come.
A kitchen staple.......2000-01-20
This is a terrific cookbook to have handy, whether you're cooking for yourself, a whole family, or even for friends for a casual dinner. The recipes aren't fancy, but they put things together in a way you might not think to do otherwise, or give directions for something you've been wanting to try but haven't because the recipes you've found in other cookbooks have been too complicated. So far, I've found that if I make a recipe from this book once, it quickly becomes a recipe that I fix regularly, because it's quick and I often have all of the ingredients in my pantry already -- and even when I don't, a quick trip to the convenience store or supermarket is all that's needed, because the recipes don't call for obscure items that require hunting down in specialty stores. Even if no one in your home/family has diabetes, this is a great, basic recipe book to have around for those nights when you're feeling less than inspired to come up with something new on your own.

More Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes--Or Less!.......2003-08-23
I got this book from the library and like it so much, I'm ordering one for myself. [A couple of weeks ago, I accidently ordered the first one, and it has its merits too, so I'm not disappointed. The first book (same title except for the word "More") has a section on tips at the beginning of the book and 5 meal menus at the end of the book.]
I love the recipes in this book, particularly the grilling recipes--I use a family size Foreman grill. Most of the recipes call for ingredients that I usually keep on hand, and the ones I have tried are very tasty.
One caveat: Check the carbohydrate count before you decide to use a recipe. Many of the desserts in particular are too high in carbohydrates for diabetics. (Most recipes are pretty good in the fat and sodium levels.)
I wish these books had more complete menus like the 5 in the first book. (This book has no menus.)
Mainly for families.......2001-07-08
Shortly after being diagnosed as a diabetic, I ordered several cookbooks including both this book and its predecessor. The recipes in both books seem to be wonderful and quick. However, we have not used either book very much because almost all recipes are for 6 or more servings. We are two people; they just don't work for us. More menus also would be helpful, especially to the newly diagnosed. Only one book (the first one) has menus, and they are mainly for entertaining.
More Diabetic Meals in 30 Minutes- or Less!.......2000-05-09
The wide variety of recipes for the Diabetic, and the health conscious takes the meal preparer from dips, through main course and dessert. All the exchanges are readable on the recipe page as well as preparation time. With this one book, I use all the different recipes, they can be presented so well, no one at my dinner table knows I am a Diabetic cooking for a Diabetic, rather that I cook tasty meals we all enjoy. Thank you

Delicious Easy To Prepare Food - Even My Boyfriend Likes It!.......2000-02-04
I happened upon this book and thought I'd give it a shot. That was a year ago and I still use it a few times a week. The food is normal and delicious! My boyfriend loved almost everything I made from this book because it's stuff you would normally make. There are a few new things you will probably want to try, but also, if you have a favorite meal such as chicken cacciatore, beef stroganoff, or cheesecake this book has the recipe and shows you how to make it healthful and still delicious. I use the weight watchers points system and had no trouble converting recipes. It also gives exchange, fat and calorie values for dieters who use a different program. I highly recommend it! It's worth it!

When Sarah Ferguson first burst upon the world's consciousness as the soon-to-be wife of Great Britain's Prince Andrew, she was redheaded, freckled, and most definitely full-figured. Several years later, the red hair and the freckles remain, but the husband and the weight have both been shed, leaving the Duchess of York a slimmed-down single mom with a new career as, among other things, a spokesperson for Weight Watchers. In Dining with the Duchess, the author doesn't give any marital advice, but she does share her favorite low-fat recipes from the Weight Watchers program--everything from a simple weeknight meal to a festive holiday occasion. Menus range from the hearty warmth of a Tuscan dinner featuring Warm White Bean Salad, Lemon Chicken, Spicy Polenta, and Bittersweet Fruit to a holiday buffet that includes Provençal Beef Tenderloin, Risotto di Pavia, and Blueberry Zabaglione, among other delights. There are menus for birthdays and for New Year's Eve, for a night spent at home in front of the TV and for a follow-up to a day spent skiing. Each menu is introduced by the Duchess with an anecdote from her personal life. Dining with the Duchess lets you eat like royalty without getting Henry VIII's waistline.

Customer Reviews:
Fine Dining, but Difficult........2002-03-02
This book is really nice and it lets you dine divinely, but the level of difficulty is pretty high. A lot of the entrees aren't something that you would fix your family on a regular Tuesday night, but they are nice menus for a dinner party or a romantic evening! Afterall, there is a reason that she is the "Duchess"!
I LOVE This book and I don't even have to count calories!.......2001-02-15
I'm one of those lucky few that doesn't have a problem with calories, so I can pretty much eat whatever I want. Even so, I like to eat healthy and absolutely LOVE this cookbook. Everything I have made has been outstanding. Take it from someone who can eat the full-leaded stuff...this cookbook is outstanding and rivals any full-fat book out there. You won't be disappointed.
Red hair and red hot.......1999-02-04
Dining With the Duchess : Making Every Day Meals a Special Occasion delivers on its promise. This delightful book not only gives readers an enormous amount of simple yet creative, low-fat recipes, it also provides us with wonderful tidbits from her personal life. And in the process, it makes any old Monday night a special occasion.
Sarah Mountbatten-Windsor York comes across as honest, down-to-earth and very funny. Royal-bashers should put their clubs away; this book is ripe with fantastic meal suggestions and real humanity. Yet aside from the heart-healthy (and mouth happy) recipes, the real joy of this book is when The Duchess gets personal, giving us humorous and sometimes moving snippets from her life.
This is an unusual cookbook. Not because it's authored by royalty, but because it's authored by a high-spirited, beautiful and talented woman who is fearless in the pursuit of herself. You just KNOW this woman is a wonderful mother and her two beautiful daughters will grow up to become strong, independent women with not only a royal title, but a sense of humor and a sense of self.
The Duchess' last book, My Story, was a fascinating and shamelessly honest confessional work, on a par with Anne Sexton and Sylvia Plath.
My wish is that The Duchess writes another book, perhaps a novel.
Anybody who has ever struggled with self-image issues, calorie problems or depression should read this fabulous cookbook. It's a must for people who eat.
An overall wonderful cookbook.......1998-11-29
As a Weight Watchers member, entertaining has been one of my biggest challenges. Many of my tried and true recipes are ones that I am no longer comfortable serving - brie en croute, hot artichoke dip, stuffed sausage bread. This book has been a lifesaver! I have literally found something for every occasion in this gem. I've yet to find a child that didn't love the Honey-Dipped Crunchy Chicken Nuggets or an adult who couldn't believe that the various appetizers were not high in fat or calories. Not only are the Paremsan Cheese Straws delicious, but they are a snap to make.
The photos are beautiful and the layout and design of this book is really wonderful. The recipes are collected into menus and each contains not only the points per serving but also a tip about the recipe.
Please, Sarah, write another cookbook!
Wonderful recipes and beautiful photos!.......1998-04-03
I am really enjoying this cookbook! The recipes are modern and very chic, without being too fancy. Sarah's commentaries are light, and the
thematic organization of recipes ("Saturday Night with a Movie," "Midday Respite") is very fun.
The colorful photos are great, and the tips at the end of each recipe are useful. This book would be great for anyone interested in low-fat, delicious cuisine that doesn't skimp on flavor. As a Weight Watchers member, I appreciate the modern format and current recipes in this book.
It's a winner!
