Captivating.......2007-09-12
Like volume one, this book is captivating from start to end. I was worried after reading volume one, volume two would be a disappointment, but it wasn't. I LOVED all the stories in this collection. They are so well written, and they flow so well, you can't put the book down. Another great book.

Outstanding!.......2007-09-12
This book intrigued me so much that it led me to read all of this author's books. She has a knack of putting reality and human feelings into supremely erotic stories. I'm waiting for the next book.

Book Description
A Corporal Once is an account of four years, two months, twenty-five days and five and a half hours of military service written to preserve for those coming after him details of his wartime experiences -- in contrast to the almost complete lack of information about the military service of the father and the two grandfathers who preceded him.
Most of his service was with the famous 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion -- .the first USA paratroop organization to go into action as the leading element in the invasion of North Africa where they jumped to seize vital airports near Oran, Algeria and Youks les Bains in Tunisa. Later, to disrupt German traffic and the flow of supplies to the enemy's front, the battalion made parachute drops behind enemy lines during the successful Allied landings at Salerno, Italy.
The battalion was committed as infantry in the mountains south of Rome to secure the left flank of the advancing 45th Division Again, as infantry it led. the assault landings at Anzio where the Author was seriously enough wounded so as to terminate active duty with the paratroops. Mr Inglesby was awarded the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Purple Heart.

A Good First Hand Account.......2002-04-07
I wish all vet's would write a similar book. A first hand account of the personal recollections of wartime service of the average enlisted man, a paratrooper no less! You'll find a lot of great little gems in here you might not get in a traditional history. It only suffers from a lack of photos and additional background on the Heroes that the men of the 509th were. Well worth the price, you wont be able to put it down untill your done.
A wonderful book.......2001-05-19
With this memorable memoir of World War Two, it was as if I was really there. I highly recomend this book for children of veterans, and for our honored veterans themselves. Leo C Inglesby has a way for words and I hope that he will share his gift with the public in an exciting sequel. Read this book!!!
Will there be a sequel?.......2001-04-24
The fellows who fought in the early days of WWII as this nation built up it's great military strength, when the odds were even between us and the enemy, are the great American heros of this century. I cannot imagine what the author and the others in his battalion must have been thinking aboard their C47s as they were winging towards North Africa, in advance of the invasion force, to be the first American troops to fight and be bloodied by the enemy. I found the story about the botched parachute drop on Avelino to be very interesting, what goes through a paratroopers head when he realizes after he lands that he has no idea where he is, he can find only one other guy from his outfit, and he must make it back to his lines wherever they might be. The author relates it much like a Boy Scout hike in the country and sprinkles in a little Sgt. York American hero in as well -- capturing a couple of Germans along the way. Mr. Inglesby relates his story with charm and dry wit, I was very sad when I finished his book, I enjoyed it very much and hope that he will write more. I wholeheartedly recommend the book to all.
A compelling story of one man at war.......2001-04-19
Of the variety of WWII books I have read, this one stands out. For a real insight into what it was like -- read this book.
A pleasant surprise.......2001-03-26
When I first saw that this was a WWII memoir, I had my doubts. As a baby boomer, I had grown up with stories about the war, and loads of people who thought "they could write a book about it." Only writing a book takes more than good stories. So when I read an excerpt of "A Corporal Once," I was pleasantly surprised, and decided to order it.
Inglesby's style is simple and concise. There is no great drama. There are no bloody battle scenes, nothing to tell us that "war is hell," except for the dedication, written in memory of a fallen friend he obviously still thinks about some 60 years later. It's a simple memoir of one man's experiences during WW II. It contains lots of humor, and little of the cliche.
I strongly recommend this book not just to those interested in the war, but to anyone who enjoys a well-written memoir.

Book Description
Wholesome and delicious recipes for cooking in harmony with nature.
Rooted in centuries-old principles, the macrobiotic diet consists of simple yet highly nutritious foods such as whole grains, vegetables, and beans, selected and prepared in harmony with the seasons. From lightly sautéed spring greens and refreshing summer salads, to harvest vegetables and hearty winter stews, this cookbook provides hundreds of easy-to-follow and flavorful recipes for complete and balanced macrobiotic meals. A combination of great taste and whole foods, this is traditional macrobiotic cooking at its best.
Customer Reviews:
Vegan cuisine is not macrobiotic cuisine.......2007-07-14
This cookbook's well-organized menus and recipes specific to each of the 4 seasons in a temperate climate zone is very helpful, but the book's title is misleading. The word macrobiotic is used in the book title, however all of the book's recipes are vegan. A little history is recounted here: During the first decade of macrobiotics in the USA, all the macro cookbooks featured a moderate use of fish and fish products. Fish products played an especially important part of soup recipes, such as miso soup. The alteration of traditional macrobiotic recipes in this cookbook to excise fish means that the authentic macrobiotic diet is actually not being represented here, and the fact that this cookbook does not discuss that omission makes it even more out of balance with mainstream macrobiotic thinking.
Eating in rhythm with life.......2006-12-08
This is a wonderful resource for everyday, practical meals to feed family and friends as well as nourish your own soul. Great recipes and menu-planning. A great complement to Practically Macrobiotic.
Macro for the Undecided.......2006-05-06
During the 1960's, Michio and Aveline Kushi popularized macrobiotics in the States, and this practical, well-written book is a good introduction. I chose this as a present, after browsing through Amazon.com for a book that combined recipes and macrobiotic concepts. As I discovered later, the balance of easily prepared recipe and basic macrobiotic concepts reflects the balance that "macro" devotees achieve through their diet. The gift recipient, Buree-Kan Kobayashi (name used with permission) confirmed that Aveline Kushi's book I chose wisely. Although Buree doesn't strictly adhere to a macrobiotic diet (he's more of a California vegan/macro/fish/almonds guy), my friend commands a basic understanding of macrobiotic concepts and principles.
One of the concepts most familiar to Westerners is the balance of yin (roughly: "hot") and yang ("cool") energies, and that's why Kushi organizes her recipes around the seasons. At the risk (read: probability) of oversimplifying, here's an example of this principle: One should eat yang foods (more raw foods, such as roots and fruit, de-emphasizing salt--a yin food) in the summer to balance the heat, and yin foods (cooked foods, often with more spice) in the winter. The book covers the transitional Autumn and Spring months as well.
Whether or not you accept these and other concepts, the book presents excellent, healthy dishes emphasizing fresh, nutritional, unprocessed foods. The recipes are generally easy to prepare, but not "dumbed down." Most ingredients can be bought at a local supermarket (especially one that emphasizes natural foods, like "Whole Foods"), but proximity to a health food or Asian store will be helpful. The flavors attainable without using meat or dairy products (your basic vegan diet) will stagger the taste buds of the uninitiated.
The simple but imaginative recipes will satisfy adventurous appetites. Satisfying staples include seitan (wheat gluten), tempeh (a cultured soy originally from Indonesia), tubers, and different grains. The list of keywords in Amazon.com's book description above hints at other foods that may be new to you; "exotic" as they may sound, these healthy foods represent the ordinary diet of millions. I think it was wise not to present cures and prescriptive herbs; the flavorful recipes are sufficient reason to incorporate some degree of macrobiotics into your cooking. If one really takes to this cuisine and wishes to explore more macrobiotic theory and praxis applied to nutrition and medicine, one can explore a more technically oriented text. Recommended for those ready to take a bite.
Fantastic.......2005-09-16
As a newcomer to macrobiotics, I absolutely loved this book and have used it every day since I bought it. It outlines easy, quick basic recipes that anyone can make - most of which involve few basic ingredients.
Everything down to how to make basic brown rice is in here. I am so blessed I happened to get this book in the beginning. After now having read some of the other macrobiotic books, I realize I might have been frustrated by the foreign ingredients and complicated recipes and been turned off from macrobiotics otherwise.
One thing I did when I bought this book (as I was just slowly learning macro foods and starting to introduce them to my cupboards) is sift through the book and start noting common themes of ingredients. After identifying and buying some of the "base" products identified, I was able to make several different recipes. These recipes make up my diet today and every day.
I would recommend this book to anyone, especially beginners like me.
Great everyday guide.......2002-05-15
This is a very practical book that gives recipes for a realistic macrobiotic regime, linked to the seasons. When you follow this diet, you feel very good.
The book lacks a discussion, however, about how to fine-tune the diet to signs or symptoms you may experience in your body or mindset. I think anyone seriously following a macrobiotic diet should use this book in conjunction with The Self Healing Cookbook by Kristina Turner. Together they give you a full picture of herbal dietary therapy and how it can be utilized on a daily basis. Together they give you enough useful recipes to keep yourself happy and your tastebuds from getting bored.

Good condition, arrived quickly.......2007-02-21
Arrived on time and was in good condition. Great grilling book.
Fantastic flavors.......2002-08-20
I have tried many recipes from this book - all are great. The barbecue sauces and marinades are delicious. You can't lose with these receipes.
A decent overview of a diverse field.......2001-05-29
Ok ok. I like this book. It's not the sexiest cookbook I've used. It's not particularly fancy. But it has good fundamentals: Tons of recipies divided into useful categories. The suggestions are seldom simple, however. I often find similar and simpler ideas after looking here first. HOWEVER, when push comes to shove, I know I can turn here for a cookout solution if I want one.
Unfortunately, no pictures. I like pictures.
Three stars. Well, ok, four stars.
Perfect for amateurs and experts alike!.......1999-07-16
This book was amazing. I appreciated the number of recipies in this book, as well as the quality. I will be trying new things on the grill for a long time!
easy and unique recipes.......1998-10-06
This simple but unique cookbook offers readers an opportunity to go beyond simple barbeque chicken and hamburgers. A highlight recipe is a tequila fajita which is easy, spicy and delicious utilizing ingredients you have on your shelf today. This cookbook is excellent for the novice cook as well as the expert. Good to use throughout the year.
