Minuteman/Activist is the compelling chronicle of a remarkable man who served his country by promoting the general welfare throughout the twentieth century. Like Colin Powell, William McCullough was born to immigrant parents in the South Bronx. A high school dropout, he went on to be earn his college degree, summa cum laude. McCullough's inspirational life experiences are eloquently recreated in this richly textured memoir.

The author tells about growing up on the streets of the Bronx, getting into trouble, swimming in the Harlem and Hudson Rivers and playing sandlot baseball. When the fun ended and the Great Depression took over, Bill's sensitive description reflects an intimate picture of life in downtown Manhattan.

McCullough is the ultimate citizen and soldier. As a citizen, his diversified record of public safety service at city, state, federal and international levels provided the credentials which ultimately earned him national recognition as a foremost authority in the field of criminal justice. As a soldier, during a thirty-seven-year career, this minuteman responded to the call of his country on five occasions, for three wars, with eleven promotions from private to colonel. U.S. Military Government's duties from 1945 to 1948 are vividly described, as Lt. McCullough helped care for more than a million displaced persons and refugees in bomb-destroyed Germany.

Captain McCullough trained and supervised the faculty of the NYCPD Police Academy. He was a faculty member of several colleges and universities, as well as the Dale Carnegie Institute. As a consultant for New York, he lectured in many cities throughout the state. To enhance police professionalism, he founded Looseleaf Law Publications and produced twenty-eight titles. As the creator of the NYC Academy Playhouse, he wrote, produced, directed, and narrated thirty-one playlets which enjoyed a seven-year run in downtown Manhattan.

Contractor Bill has built five houses on the islands of Hilton Head, Callawassie and Montserrat. Outdoorsman Bill has performed singular feats in seven different sports. He and his wife Doris have a "life list" of over 500 species of birds sighted in the U.S. and Canada. This led activist Bill to prize the environment, and throughout his retirement, to oppose indiscriminate land development.

Whether describing experiences in wartime, thrills in sports, or any of the other events in his active existence, Colonel McCullough conveys a captivating exuberance to live life to its fullest extent possible.

Worth seeking out, warranting reprinting, this is a dense, substantial, but readible biography, less concerned with literary criticism than with the psychological dynamics and political realities of Tagore's creative life. Ultimately, it is about East and West, which is to say, about Tagore the globalist who sought integration of east and west, as contrasted with Gandhi, the nationalist. Tagore believed that the human condition was first of all cultural, Gandhi regarded it as first of all political. This is a comprehensive but penetrating study not only of Tagore, but of modern India.

Very Captivating ..........1997-07-09

One day I was visiting my friend, and he gave me this book to read. I always knew Tagore from my childhood, but this relevation was too captivating... I still wish I have the book wherever I see myriad flowers .... A must for a Tagore Fan.

Good book, some info you don't get from other books........2007-08-21

I used this book through both of my pregnancies. I really liked it, especially that it was specifically for us vegetarians. It's not expensive, so if you are a vegetarian and pregnant (or want to get pregnant) you can't go wrong with this book.

A little panicky, a little preachy, a little inaccurate and no help.......2007-08-05

I was really looking forward to this book as being a voice of insightful reason about what it means to be pregnant in a world that regards vegetarianism as a faze and therefore pregnancy as an opportunity to end that faze. In that sense the assessment of vegetarian diets for nutriets combined with meat eaters was somewhat helpful. But also a little tedious.
What made me really dislike this book though is that I sometimes found it a little panicky-- you must see you doctor immediately if a, b, or c happen when other books and sources are much quicker to reassure readers that lots of things happen in pregnancy and most are normal; this book could send a nervous mom-to-be in to repeated panics.
Secondly, it was a little preachy-- "vegans are the purest", notions like pregnant veggies are special because they are "bringing a new life into the world without taking a new life" came across as santimonious rather than helpful. For people who are already committed to vegetarian lifestyles, this is unneccessary. For people contemplating vegetarian lifestyles, this is condescending and rude.
Finally, there were some general scientific inaccuracies (not about vitamins or what to eat maybe) but the counting system for instance is just wrong. Month 1 is 4-8 weeks. Month 2 is 8-12 weeks. Which month is week 8 again? Inaccuracies like that suggest someone without much practical experience or intellecutal rigor.

I thought this book was interesting and informative, but not beyond the second chapter.

The second chapter on nutrition runs through detailed information about all the essential nutriants and general dietary guidlines. This is the best section of the book if you want to understand what to eat and why.

Unfortunately, the month-by-moth guide is greatly lacking in detail and information. I think there is too much general (and very unnecessary) commentaries, such as complications from eating fish or having a venereal disease. I'd rather have had more information about what exactly is happening with my body and my baby's, what foods are ideal for what stage in development.

So, if all you need is some (fairly comprehensive) information about nutrition and very general information about your pregnancy, this book should be fine. On the other hand, I've not seen a better book that deals with vegetarian pregnancy, particularly because the author is so reassuring about maintaining a vegetarian diet during pregnancy.

Great Reference!.......2006-12-18

As a vegetarian, I have many questions about what to eat while pregnant or trying to conceive. I feel that this book does an excellent job outlinging the main points of a vegetarian diet and pregnancy. In a simple question and answer format, the author clearly provided information for all my questions. I liked that it was straightforward and simply put without overdoing it on the herbal remedies like other books I have read. It is a good reference!

This publication provides a cursory overview of some of America's most popular commercial fish and seafoods. It's easy to read and a good quick reference for chefs and restauranteurs. Readers seeking more than a few paragraphs for each fish should look to a more comprehensive tome such as A.J. McClane's "Encyclopedia of Fish Cookery." The illustrations and charts are colorful yet provide little meaningful information. I recommend it to any novice cooks who seek to expand their knowledge of fish and seafood.

This book offers menu suggestions, craft ideas, decorations and party favors for children's parties. It is a great book that even the amateur can do and it's still entertaining. My son had the pirate party and it turned out great. We copied the pirate hat and made it from construction paper, and the suggested decorations were right on target. It only has 12 party suggestions but everything is included for those 12 parties.

You have everything you need: a party planner, cake recipes, food ideas, games and activites, party crafts, and even a shopping list.

This is definetly for the party planner impaired. 12 great parties, my only disappointment is that there were not more. Those 12 parties though, were complete, helpful and simple.

This book is a must have if you frequently find yourself lucky enough to enjoy Australian seafood. It features almost all of the commonly available species you are likely to find in a restaurant or a fishmonger.

This book enables you to plan your meals- it mentions eating qualities for each species, and oil contents so you can actually "get the good oil"! It also features latin names, habitats and similar species guides.

Recommended marketing names are also used which is essential for Australian exporters. It is recommend to the novice fish eater and the professional seafood exporter. You can also get this in a laminated version which I suppose you could safely take to sea with.

An unusual approach to a cookbook. Tells you how to catch it or buy it, clean it and cook it with humorous stories to bring it alive (the book not the seafood!) The book is delightfully illustrated by renowned artist Claude Howell giving this cookbook a different look. This cookbook is a must for your kitchen whether you are the cook or not. It is such a shame that it is no longer in print. It was my favorite gift for every newlywed couple I knew.
