Book Description
In 1941, Mary Matsuda Gruenewald was a teenage girl who, like other Americans, reacted with horror to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Yet soon she and her family were among 110,000 innocent people imprisoned by the U.S. government because of their Japanese ancestry. In this eloquent memoir, she describes both the day-to-day and the dramatic turning points of this profound injustice: what is was like to face an indefinite sentence in crowded, primitive camps; the struggle for survival and dignity; and the strength gained from learning what she was capable of and could do to sustain her family. It is at once a coming-of-age story with interest for young readers, an engaging narrative on a topic still not widely known, and a timely warning for the present era of terrorism. Complete with period photos, the book also brings readers up to the present, including the author's celebration of the National Japanese American Memorial dedication in 2000.

Powerful and Personal.......2007-07-13
I loved this book. As a Sansei, 3rd generation Japanese in America, I learned so much from reading this book. Both of my parents were interned during the war, but in all these years, they've only shared bits and pieces or vague generalities of their own experiences. Reading Mary Matsuda's vivid and detailed account of her own experience gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding of this traumatic, stressful period, along with a better understanding of basic Japanese customs and beliefs that have guided my own life. It has been a powerful step towards better understanding my own family's history, and I so appreciate that this story was shared by the author. It was beautifully written. I highly recommend this book to all.
Looking Like the Enemy: My Story of Imprisonment in Japanese American Internment Camps.......2007-06-14
A must. Extremely readable. Should be required reading for Junior or High School students. Evokes a sense of what it felt like to be Japanese during that infamous time.
Eye Opening.......2007-02-14
My family was also sent to internment camps, actually some of the same ones as this author. We came from the same beloved Vashon. Being a child of a parental figure who came from that era and having had aunts and uncles, grandparents and great grandparents who had lived that experience but never spoken of it, this book has opened my eyes and helped me understand the severity of it all. I can understand now the turmoil emotionally and physically that they under went. I cried with this author. For even today, in this wide spread nation, I can still see the ripples of underlying current made from this time period and the choices made by our leaders. This is a wonderful book. You'll learn something, and if you don't, you should ask yourself some hard questions.
Strongly recommended to all Americans.......2007-01-28
Even if one is aware of the internment of the American Japanese, I doubt that most people can form any real idea of what it was like without reading a personal chronicle like this. It is difficult to express how painful it is to read, and I already knew the basic story. Sure, now we know that it didn't turn into a second Holocaust, but the people in the camps didn't have that comforting foreknowledge. One needs to be reminded that although the intense portions of a tragedy may be long over with, the ramifications for the people who suffered through it can last all their lives, even for those who didn't lose everything that they had owned before the catastrophe.
Jeanne Wakatusi Houston also wrote a classic memoir: Farewell to Manzanar, and it is well worth reading both of the books for the similarities and differences between the two experience. Houston was perhaps 8 or 10 years younger than Mary Matsuda, and her family dynamics were quite different, so they really complement one another. Being older, Mary Matsuda had to confront personally and directly issues that Jeanne Wakatusi Houston didn't, although of course her family members did. JWH tells us more about her life after the camps; MMG ends her books in 1945, with only an afterword summarizing the later lives of the Matsudas.
I found the book very vivid. I could easily imagine how I would feel having to destroy so much family history, even being afraid to keep a set of dolls lest it add fuel to the anti-Japanese fervor. And I feel that I have some inkling of what it was like to live for years under constant strain, not knowing what would come next, or if it would ever end. I was close to crying at points, which is unusual for me. The Matsudas lived on Vashon Island in the Puget Sound, which should make the book all the more interesting to fans of Guterson's Snow Falling on Cedars.
The book includes a bibliography, a glossary and numerous black-and-white photographs of the Matsudas and the camps.
Brings back old memories.......2006-07-05
Although I have never met the author, I did know her brother Yonichi. I also know his 4 daughters. This book brought back memories of my time in the relocation camp in Minidoka, ID.

Book Description
Excerpts from nine of the most widely read Gulag books. In addition to providing a ghastly record of Communist terror, the Critchlows also explain why Western readers developed such deep mistrust of peaceful coexistence with any Communist nation. The Critchlows have rendered a signal service to scholarship by providing attention, access, and background to this historically important literature. --John Earl Haynes
Customer Reviews:
The Collection of Personal Tales.......2005-06-05
This book fills the gap that the Gulag Series is missing...The Personal Views..Much of the books on the gulag are scholarly estimates and observations, without the first hand eyewitness to the events. This book is created from exceprts from little heard of books about the Gulag published throughout its history, from the Time of The Great purge up To the Time when cold war tensions were "Loosening Up", when in fact the same hard conditions persisted...
The books writing quality as a whole is very good, the book is intresting and intriging to read, and also conveys deep details and vivid descriptions of the Gulag...Very much recommended to all readers.
FABULOUS BUT PAINFUL HISTORY.......2002-09-26
"Enemies of the State" provides a riveting look into the slave-labor prisons of the Communist world during several decades of the 20th century. It brings history alive to a whole new generation of Americans who may be only vaguely aware of the oppression, torture and viciousness imposed on their countrymen by totalitarian leaders like Stalin, Mao, and Castro. The book contains 10 first-person accounts by people who spent years wrongfully imprisoned in slave-labor camps. Very much like the first-person accounts of Jews held in German concentration camps during the Holocaust, "Enemies of the State" also includes historical background and explanations of the political themes of the times. The book is factual and compelling for anyone over the age of 12. It is a great resource for high school or college students, and teachers and college professors. The general public will also find this book to be fascinating reading, although it is not for anyone with a weak stomach. The tortures and degradations described in the book are beyond imagination, but they are real and are presented in painful and vivid detail. Anyone with a love of history, however, will find this book to be an important addition to their library. I highly recommend it for youths and adults, and I especially encourage home schoolers to consider including this book in their studies.

In the Presence of Mine Enemies: An American Chaplain in Ww II German Prison Camps
Eugene L. Daniel

Customer Reviews:
A Heroic Captivity.......2000-09-28
"The privilege of a lifetime" is what the author thought about the opportunity to minister to American prisoners of war. Chaplain Eugene L. Daniel Jr. began his 27 month odyssey as a German prisoner in a manner that was, perhaps, unique in the annals of WWII. While his comrades in the 34th Division evacuated a doomed hilltop position by stealth of night, the Chaplain stayed behind, waiting for dawn. He stayed behind so he could get medical assistance for two wounded German prisoners. The prisoners would never have made it back to an Allied field hospital, and they surely would have perished had they been left behind. Their one hope was delivery to the nearest German medical station. Chaplain Daniel's "surrender" saved the lives of the wounded soldiers, and this singular act of humanity was a fitting beginning to Daniel's years of ministry to his fellow POWs. "In The Presence of Mine Enemies" is a story of a heroic captivity. From the rugged mountains of Tunisia, to the frozen Silesian Plain, Chaplain Daniel buoyed the spirits of his comrades by sharing the scriptures and holding fast to his faith. In his first message to fellow inmates at Stalag Luft III, Daniel wrote: "It is my dominant prayer that together, we may learn more of the grace and love of our heavenly Father." Of the tens of thousands of American servicemen captured during World War II, not one was prepared for captivity. Some thought about death, many imagined being wounded, and most all dreamed about returning to their loved ones unhurt. But no man was prepared for the abject humiliation of becoming a prisoner of war. Many Americans were already wounded at the time of their capture, and there were little or no medical resources to attend to their wounds. For all, hunger and malnutrition were a grim fact of life. Allied officers fared slightly better than enlisted men, in their segregated camps. For that reason, Lieutenant Daniel requested his German captors to transfer him to an enlisted men's prison camp, so that he could minister to those in the greatest need. And so, Eugene Daniel shared the same starvation diet as the enlisted prisoners. Near the war's end, when the Germans desperately marched their captives over a frozen Europe, trying to dodge the advancing Russians, Daniel was reduced 115 pounds. But throughout his ordeal, he continued to serve to his fellow prisoners a steadfast diet of hope and grace. Even some of his captors fell under the influence of Daniel's spiritual light, and more than one German prison guard formed a bond of lifelong Christian fellowship with the American Chaplain. This extraordinary story is told with humor, humility, and elegantly simple prose. "In The Presence of Mine Enemies" deserves special honors in our inspirational literature. It will surely lead the reader to better understand the mysterious promise of the 23rd Psalm.

Practical Advice and Inspiration for On-the-Job Success.......2007-10-04
What I love about "Making ADD Work" is that Blythe Grossberg gets to the heart of the issues facing ADDers in the workplace. She doesn't waste too much time explaining ADD, but rather dives deeply into the lives and work habits of adults with ADD who have successfully learned to cope with their challenges and utilize their strengths.
Dr. Grossberg focuses on the three key areas that are most helpful for adults with ADD: improving work skills, finding the right career path, and getting support. Additionally, the book is packed with inspirational stories and expert advice. I highly recommend it to all my clients!
-Jennifer Koretsky, author of Odd One Out: The Maverick's Guide to Adult ADD
Step by step.......2006-12-11
Among all books on autism or ADD
I've ever read, this book best fits
my feelings.
There are several aspects imformative
how to live a social life with ADD.
On the other hand, contents whole
reffers to a couple of cases from
employees at workplace to CEOs or
founders.
This shows, I think, the author intend
to let us, ADDers, know how we are going
on. Step by step is essential.
I wish Dr.Grossberg to write down a new
one on ADD based upon brain science
viewpoints.
Much ado about nothing.......2006-09-15
There is very little of substance to this book with regard to concrete suggestions on strategies a person can use to work with ADD as an adult - especially in the work place; lots of "stories." There is great emphasis about enlisting the help of family, friends, coworkers. People with ADD just want to work with it; they don't want their world to be involved in it. A very disappointing missive.
Excellent resource!.......2005-09-08
Dr. Grossberg has provided the reader with a wonderfully clear and concise picture of the issues that exist in the workplace, with AD/HD. She has highlighted the challenges, and offered insightful solutions. This is a great addition to the workplace arena, with AD/HD.
Great book for Adults with ADD who need some guidance with the workplace.......2005-09-07
As an ADD Coach and somebody is very active in the online ADD/ADHD community I get a lot people asking me to recommend good books about Adult ADD and the Workplace.I was very happy when I found the book Making ADD Work : On-the-Job Strategies for Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder by Blythe Grossberg. I think it's the best book that I have read about ADD and the Workplace. The book has a very "ADD Friendly" set up which makes it easy for people with Attention Deficit Disorder to read. It has some great tips and strategies too. As an ADD Coach I was also very impressed with the section in the book about ADD Coaching.

My favorite cookbook.......2006-11-14
I purchased this cookbook in a gift store in Ocean City, MD on one of our family vacations about 5 years ago. I had many cookbooks before it and many more cookbooks since. Out of them all, this is my hands down favorite. Every recipe that I have made from it is delicious. When relatives and friends like something I make enough to ask where I got the recipe, it is usually from this cookbook. I have actually bought it as a gift for my mom, my mother-in-law and all my close friends. Thank you Junior League of Annapolis for the best cookbook ever!
Best gift ever!.......2005-10-31
I am from Southern Maryland, and I received this gift for my wedding shower and it is wonderful. You really can't go wrong with any of the dishes. An easy crowd favorite is the Strawberry salad, they just rave on and on about it! I have given this book many times as a gift since, because of the great recipes and especially since it represents Maryland!
Just about the best Junior League Cookbook I Own!.......2002-06-07
As a Chesapeake girl tranplanted to Southern California, I just love this cookbook! Each recipe in the book takes me back to the authentic southern cooking I enjoyed in my native Maryland/Virginia family homes!
The recipies are clear, rated for difficulty, sophisticated, yet destined to become family favorites! And each has a fabulous sense of style that will mark you as a fabulous hostess!
Don't tell my friends in the Junior Leage of Pasadena, but this cookbook is right up there in excellence with ours, and Lord knows, ours are just fabulous!
I absolutely love this cookbook! It is superb!
excellent, I recommend it hightly.......2000-09-07
I haven't made a bad recipe yet. I love the rating of each recipe and the little reviews. Several of my neighbors have purchased it after trying some of the dishes.
Best cookbook in my collection.......1998-12-24
I'm never afraid to try new recipes from Of Tide & Thyme. Everything I have prepared from this cookbook has been excellent. At a recent holiday cocktail party, I prepared the Chafing Dish Crab Dip, and everyone rated it as the BEST they had ever had. I also prepared the Broccoli Cheese Dip, which was not only pretty, but also WONDERFUL!!! One of my favorite recipes is for the Marinated Pork Tenderloins. The marinade is fantastic and gives it such a great flavor. I cook my tenderloins on the grill rather than in the oven. We prepare this quite a bit for tailgating at VA TECH--GO HOKIES!!! This truly is the best cookbook in my collection and I have at least 50 to 75 cookbooks!!!
