A TOUCHING PERSONAL INSIGHT INTO LIFE DURING THE WAR........1999-09-26
THE MORE I READ OF THIS BOOK, THE HARDER IT BECAME TO PUT IT DOWN. I FELT A PART OF THE WRITER'S EXPERIENCES, FRUSTRATIONS AND LONGINGS. READING A BOOK LIKE THIS PUTS ME INTO THE LIVES BEING DESCRIBED AND EXPOSES ME TO THE HEARTBREAK THEREIN. VERY TOUCHING AND ONE THAT I WILL READ AGAIN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE SUFFERINGS OF MARION AND AMANDA AND THEIR FAMILIES.
History from the mouth of a common soldier.......1999-01-03
This simple farmer who went to war wrote letters home to his wife and child describing what his daily routines were in the army, including the homesickness and heartaches. The daily truths he describes make it hard to idealize and glorify any war.
Great insight into hardships of war from a soldier's view........1999-01-02
If you want to know what it was like to be a soldier in the Civil War, read this book. It gives incredible insight into the day to day hardships that a soldier faced. It is an emotional journey that presents the pride of fighting for a cause and the heartaches of leaving ones family.
Letters to Amanda..........1998-12-24
My great-grandfather fought along-side Marion Hill Fitzpatrick as a member of the 49th Georgia, a sister regiment of Thomas' Brigade. This book gave me a very personal, heart-wrenching insight into not only what these men went through, but also the daily ordeals of surviving of their families back home. My thanks to the the folks who produced this wonderful work.
C. Bryan Smith
Excellent look at a soldier's life during the Civil War........1998-12-18
This book captures the feel of a soldier's life during the Civil War. The hardships and the heartaches of the war are made all too clear through the letters of this simple Georgia farmer to his beloved wife Amanda. A must read for any Civil War buff and an excellent slice of real history for anyone.

Lush, remarkable Pulitzer prize-winning volume..........2005-03-08
...continues the excellence of the series. Originally intended as the final book of the series, "The Story of Civilization", in ended up being the penultimate volume.
The Durants lucidly and eloquently summarize the philosophy, life and influence that Rousseau had on the 18th century and, indeed, continues to have to this very day. Rousseau may be regarded as the creator of the Left-wing sensibility. This may seem anachronistic and, in a sense, it is. Rousseau died before the French Revolution, which created the modern political division of Right and Left. Nevertheless, it is accurate to see him as the Fountainhead for relativism, communism, and the worship of feeling as opposed to reason (debased and emptied of all intellectual content this is now called building "self-esteem" by the modern leftist).
Rousseau created most of the modern ills of political fanaticism and airy, absurd idealism as the Durants so ably note.
The rest of the period is not neglected and vivid portraits are made of Frederick the Great, Catherine the Great, the Elder Pitt, Diderot, D'Holbach, Samuel Johnson and many, many others help this book to shine.
Awarded the Pulitzer Prize--which should have gone to the entire series as opposed to just this volume--this book gives the reader a complete (if necessarily synopsized) account of the End and Failure of the Enlightenment and how what Rousseau and Voltaire intended in their attacks on the social structure (Rousseau) and religion (Voltaire) lead to disastrous consequences in the French Revolution.
The writing sparkles with vivid wit, pith and lucid beauty. It is a book to be read for a lifetime and bequeathed to children. In an age where smarmy, intellectually empty, political fanaticism is attempting to erase the past in favor of the PC fantasies of the moment, the Durants offer a vivid account of the Truth. European civilization is presented here in all its glory and with all its warts. Slavery, religious fanaticism, exploitation and the horrors of the penal system and warfare are all presented here, in their proper place and in context. The modern academic community has attempted to destroy the ideal of context and balance. As long as these books are around, REAL history and historiography are available to anyone who simply opens a copy and reads it.

The Tenth Volume in The Story of Civilization!.......2004-09-02
In this, the tenth volume in the critically acclaimed series "The Story of Civilization," Dr. will & Ariel Durant have compiled a masterful dramatic exploration of the European climate and the events which paved the way for the French Revolution.
The reader will be exposed to a vivid recount of the acts of: Rousseau, who confessed his most embarassing sexual and emotional episodes. England and the rise of her overseas empire. Catherine The Great of Russia. Frederick The Great of Prussia. The German Enlightenment. Marie Antoinette. France's impotent and frustrated King Louis XVI. And much, much more including plates and maps.
Written to stand alone or within the series, the Durants have composed an unparalleled historical prose in smooth flowing narrative that is easy to read and understand by both professional and layperson alike. In short, this book is for everyone. I rate it as five stars. Bravo!

Book Description
Edgar Cayce left behind a legacy of psychic readings, two-thirds of which dealt with physical illnesses and what might be done to restore the body to health. Throughout his suggestions on ways to correct these conditions, Cayce spoke volumes about diet. He saw certain food combinations as helpful, some as harmful. His theme throughout the readings was keep the body and its functions balancedoften by using nutrition.
This book gives readers a useful and practical source of information regarding what constructive eating is all about. It is written especially for those who are interested in seeking out their life purpose, in maintaining health, and in overcoming illnesses.
Readers will learn the importance of stress, attitudes, emotions, beliefs, habits, prayer, and meditation, and how they affect the use of food by the body and the ultimate effect it has on general health.
The diet you need for full health is as unique as you are. This book will show you how to search creatively for the diet that will suit you best.
Customer Reviews:
edgar cayce on healing foods for the body, mind, and spirit.......2006-08-21
I found this book very inlightning it has improved my system over 50%, it is accurate and safe with all the information it gives the reader, I would recommend it to any one who is serious about healing their body, mind and spirit.
Not what I expected...But still glad I bought it..........2005-12-07
Very informative...the book is full of good advice and excellent information...but...I think the truth of the matter is...I just need my mom to keep cooking for me...I'm just way too lazy to read about it...then cook it...then eat it...argh!!!
This book is for spiritual guidance and NOT for learning facts about nutrition.......2005-10-19
If you are interested in how food fits in with your life's purpose, then this book might be for you. This book suggests that you should "be mindful more not of the body for the body's sake, but of the body that the temple of the living God may be the better channel for manifesting the spritual truths." Many foods are mentioned regarding their inclusion or exclusion in your diet, but you're expected to take it all on faith since the book does not reference any studies, scientific or otherwise. The book also recommends to avoid microwave ovens for cooking but mentions no reason! Conventional ovens are OK. It also suggests you never eat raw apples. Basically, it's a bunch of advice on how to eat and live without any scientific backing. If you want modern advice backed by science, then try something else like Superfoods RX.
Most thorough book on eating the best natural foods ever!.......2001-04-20
This is the most thorough and natural book on eating the best foods for health and healing that I've ever read; and I have read many of them. This is in no way a diet book for weight loss, but a book about eating naturally to prevent or cure whatever is bothering you/your system. It is simple to use--just look up your problem, and you will get a specific food to eat to combat it based on the Edgar Cayce readings(the health readings are well-documented and the cures proven effective as evidenced by the letters written back to Edgar Cayce from thankful and thrilled adults and children who were cured whose evidence can be found in other Cayce material). If you can find this book, buy it immediately. It is an excellent reference book for any library.

Amazon.com
Delia Smith is a British phenomenon. Offering confidence-inspiring cooking instruction on TV and in print--more than 11 million copies of her books have sold--she's a U.K. culinary superstar known to cause national product shortages when she plugs ingredients. Delia Smith's Summer Collection, the American edition of her British bestseller, offers more than 120 easy recipes plus menus for a wide range of hot-weather dishes. It also includes innovative suggestions for grilling, meat and vegetarian barbecue strategies, and a selection of formulas for fruit preserves, among other light-handed instruction. Smith's friendly, in-the-trenches-with-you volubility and her evident food savvy should make the book a happy addition to U.S. cookbook libraries.
Recognizing the trepidation with which Americans may approach British recipes, Smith asserts the fine taste of her formulas and her intention to proceed "with lively optimism." She needn't have worried. Recipes such as Roasted Tomato Soup with a Purée of Basil, Barbecued Sardines with Summer Herb Sauce, and Angel Hair Pasta with Thai Spiced Shrimp make for happy dining here. Especially noteworthy sweets include Summer Fruit Millefeuille, Lemon Meringue Ice Cream, and Compote of Fresh Figs in Muscat Wine with Vanilla Custard. Though Smith offers some "returned-to-you" American recipes that can't be said to advance the culinary argument, even these are well conceived, and who would reject her hot fudge sundae, blueberry and pecan muffins, or half-pounders (more than a quarter-pound improvement on our burger specialty). With 50 color photos of the food in all its glory, this large-format book is as easy to welcome as its popular author. --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:
Delia Rocks!.......2006-11-01
I've been using this cookbook for a few years and checked to see if she'd written anything new. The recipes are delicious. The cooking instruction is clear. She adds a special touch with her comments that make me feel that I have an expert guiding me in the kitchen. This American cook loves Delia Smith! My family, guests and neighbors love the recipes I prepare with this book and Delia's Winter Cookbook.

Buy this book! Sumptuously illustrated with some really mouthwatering recipes - try the Strawberry Granita for instance. Very good all round.
Delia - Oh why do you stay in England?.......2000-08-10
Delia, oh Delia. The woman who taught me how to make toast! (I was actually making it wrong all these years...) Delia is one of those television personalities who you really would like to have as a friend. Her books are extremely personable and can literally be read aloud - gives you that "Delia is in the house" feeling. The Summer and Winter Collections are Superb books. Also check out How to Cook One and Two. Excellent. Now, where can I buy the How to Cook video collection?
Wonderful!.......1998-09-05
You have to try the Roasted Peppers recipe - it's easy and I continually impress all dinner guests with the simple dish. The Chicken Basque is delicious and although the fresh fruit terrine needs 24 hours to finish, it tastes great, looks delicious and impresses everyone. It is my favourite cookbook!
This Cook Book Works!.......1997-11-21
If you are frustated by reading colourful and glossy recipes that turn out disasterous the delicious Delia is for you. Her recipes always work. Her UK television programme back room staff ensure that, as most if not all are demonstrated on TV, and even the most acknowledged cooks in the UK will tell you that it will, yes will, work the first time. My wife, a proffesional cook, makes no excuse for always having her volumes at hand for that sudden emergancy. Typical of the main stream of modern British cuisine in the mid 1990s, full of the feeling and flavours of that oh so elusive English Summer.
