Book Description

The extraordinary life of Captain Charles N. Bamforth spanned most of the twentieth century, beginning with his childhood at the turn of the century and continuing through his retirement and death during the Cold War era. During his sixty years at sea, Captain Bamforth experienced the Depression, two World Wars, and a number of troublesome labor disputes. Through it all, he also had to navigate loneliness, confusion, and marriage to both his family and the sea. His story is told in meticulous detail and with refreshing honesty.

Captain Bamforth's handwritten diaries, logs, and personal letters all have been carefully compiled by his sons, Charles and Richard, and reveal as much about the hard-working, unassuming courage of the captain as they do about the turbulent times during which he lived.

4 out of 5 stars A Giant Imprint of the 19th Century.......2003-08-19

"Iron Jay" is classic American stuff; a great reading experience and absolutely absorbing from a social/historical perspective. Truly a working man's autobiography, the story sustains a tension that makes it intriguingly essential reading. Captain Bamforth's spirit is extraordinary -- chaotic and poetically tender in one quick flash. At one point you're in love with the man, idealist and poet; the next moment he looms up at you in patriarchal horror.

I wish everyone would get their own copy. I gave up waiting for those who borrowed mine to part with it so I bought a second copy that I will NOT loan out. It is a must for my library of favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A Rewarding Read.......2002-10-02

As the Skipper's granddaughter, I dutifully picked up this book... and then found myself turning pages late into the night!

Throughout the book, Captain Bamforth's voice comes through as authentically human and intensely engaged in the world around him, revealing an honest naivete, an unflappable work ethic, a remarkable sense of satisfaction in the rich details of his travels, and the challenges that his chosen life at sea imposed on his family and home life.

Some have said that my grandfather's stories are the stuff of legend. Keeping his crew alive for six days after his ship was torpedoed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean certainly falls in that category. At the same time, I think what's fascinating is the day-to-day perseverance of a very ordinary man, grappling with and embracing his understanding of right and wrong, of loyalty and betrayal, of life and peril in the 20th century. It is this testament of a hard-working man that, through its sincerity, becomes extraordinary and perhaps legendary.

4 out of 5 stars Iron Jaw: A Skipper Tells His Story.......2002-09-02

An enjoyable and informative book. The narrative gives insight into the many aspects of being a sea captain far beyond the mere steering of a ship.

3 out of 5 stars Great info, hard reading.......2003-02-18

The information in this book is excellent but it is very difficult to follow on account of it's age/scientific language. But it doesn't make the information any less valid. If you are new to the concept that the germ-theory is flawed, I would recommend an easier reading book first (maybe a couple). "Food is your best medicine" would be a good one to start with. But if you are up to it, this book has great info on Pasteur and Bechamp. The author does seem a little biased (or alot), but I don't blame them. :)

    Book Description

This volume contains new editions of two books which have been available only sporadically in the decades since their publication. R.Pearson's "Pasteur: Plagiarist, Imposter" was originally published in 1942, and is a succinct introduction to both Louis Pasteur and Antoine Bechamp, and the reasons behind the troubled relationship that they shared for their entire working lives. Whereas Pearson's work is a valuable introduction to an often complex topic, it is Ethel Douglas Hume's expansive and well-documented "Bechamp or Pasteur? A Lost Chapter in the History of Biology" which provides the main body of evidence. It covers the main points of contention between Bechamp and Pasteur in depth sufficient to satisfy any degree of scientific or historical scrutiny, and it contains, wherever possible, detailed references to the source material and supporting evidence. Virtually no claim in Ms Hume's book is undocumented. The reader will soon discern that neither Mr Pearson nor Ms Hume could ever be called fans of Pasteur or his 'science'. They both declare their intentions openly; that they wish to contribute to the undoing of a massive medical and scientific fraud. "Nothing is lost, nothing is created ... all is transformed. Nothing is the prey of death. All is the prey of life." -- Antoine Bechamp

      Book Description

Whether to admire more the man or his method, the life or work, is left for the reader to decide. Among the researches that have made the name of Louis Pasteur a household word, three are of the first importance: a knowledge of the true nature of the processes in fermentation; a knowledge of the chief maladies which have scourged man and animals; a knowledge of the measures by which either the body may be protected against these diseases, or the poison neutralized when once within the body.

                Book Description

In The Private Science of Louis Pasteur, Gerald Geison has written a controversial biography that finally penetrates the secrecy that has surrounded much of this legendary scientist's laboratory work. Geison uses Pasteur's laboratory notebooks, made available only recently, and his published papers to present a rich and full account of some of the most famous episodes in the history of science and their darker sides--for example, Pasteur's rush to develop the rabies vaccine and the human risks his haste entailed. The discrepancies between the public record and the "private science" of Louis Pasteur tell us as much about the man as they do about the highly competitive and political world he learned to master.

Although experimental ingenuity served Pasteur well, he also owed much of his success to the polemical virtuosity and political savvy that won him unprecedented financial support from the French state during the late nineteenth century. But a close look at his greatest achievements raises ethical issues. In the case of Pasteur's widely publicized anthrax vaccine, Geison reveals its initial defects and how Pasteur, in order to avoid embarrassment, secretly incorporated a rival colleague's findings to make his version of the vaccine work. Pasteur's premature decision to apply his rabies treatment to his first animal-bite victims raises even deeper questions and must be understood not only in terms of the ethics of human experimentation and scientific method, but also in light of Pasteur's shift from a biological theory of immunity to a chemical theory--similar to ones he had often disparaged when advanced by his competitors.

Through his vivid reconstruction of the professional rivalries as well as the national adulation that surrounded Pasteur, Geison places him in his wider cultural context. In giving Pasteur the close scrutiny his fame and achievements deserve, Geison's book offers compelling reading for anyone interested in the social and ethical dimensions of science.

4 out of 5 stars The Private Science of Louis Pasteur Review.......2006-04-16

Gerald Geison's The Private Science of Louis Pasteur is an excellent and comprehensive biography that effectively delves into the life of one of the worlds greatest and most influential scientists. The book outlines and discusses Pasteur's life and work in an organized manner, starting in a more biographical sense and then discussing the development and implications of each of Pasteur's most important discoveries, including optical isomers, experiments disproving spontaneous generation, the anthrax vaccine, and the rabies vaccine. The book also includes a section explaining Pasteur's legacy in its closing pages. The Private Science of Louis Pasteur also discusses the differences between Pasteur's discoveries in his published papers and those recorded in his private laboratory notebooks. The information in the book concerning the procedures Pasteur used in his experiments is fascinating, albeit hard to understand at times. The book penetrates the secrecy of Pasteur's laboratory work, using Pasteur's personal notebooks, made available only recently. It outlines some of the most important events in scientific history, including the development of the rabies and anthrax vaccines. Louis Pasteur is one of the most influential and important scientists of all time. For this reason, everyone should learn about him and his discoveries, and a great way of doing this is exploring this book.

An excellent examination of a poorly understood disorder. Few of us are able to distinguish between compulsive behavior and criminal acts. However, Dr.s Grant and Kim clearly show that people who suffer from compulsive urges are struggling with behavior they cannot control. This book is a comprehensive review of every aspect of the compulsive behaviors associated with uncontrollable urges to gamble, shop, steal, and have sex. Both those suffering from uncontrollable urges and their family and friends will benefit from the authors explanations of how to identify a compulsive disorder, possible causes and treatments, and resources for finding help. This was the first book I've found that focuses on the patient's own stories. Throughout the book I was struck by the authors' deep compassion for their patients and join their call to all doctors to familiarize themselves with the characteristics and current treatments for compulsive disorders. Just as many people have benefitted from the treatments described in this book, I am hopeful that a friend of mine will also regain health and happiness by reading this book. It may even save her life. This study also has important implications for the examination of other compulsive disorders and how we may be able to help many others take back control of their lives.

I have been searching for help my entire life. Having had lifelong problems with impulse control I have problems with relationships and even trouble with authorities occaisionally. No one would take me seriously labling me as weak or of low moral character. Having heard Dr Grant on television and radio speaking wih such empathy for Winona Ryder I new he could help me. I bought his book the instant it came out. I was imediately able to apply his techniques to my own life. I really feel I have taken control of my life for the first time. The book is so well written, full of keen insight and examples drawn from Dr Grant's clinical practice. It is about time someone took my problems seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Great food, low-fat or otherwise.......2002-10-28

There aren't a lot of "cooking for two" books out there that have really good recipes. This is an exception. Every one of the breads is fantastic, and only makes enough for 1 meal, so the bread is always fresh. We don't need to watch our weight or salt intake, but I use this book so much because the food just tastes so good!

5 out of 5 stars Cooking Light for Two Results in Easy Weight Loss.......2001-06-01

There are too few "light cooking" books designed for just two people, and this is one of the best yet with a wide variety of recipes using fresh herbs and minimal oil. We make extensive use of this book weekly and are pleased with an easy, and permanent, weight loss while eating gourmet food. We would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys great food while losing weight.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, Quick and Very Tasty.......2000-04-28

I just started cooking religiously when I got married, and I never realized how many recipes from very expensive cookbooks could be so undesirable. But.... Not this time! This book is fantastic! The recipes are easy to prepare, with ingredients that are easy to find, and although the food is low-fat, it is delicious. Now, I'm on ........ to find more cookbooks by the same author(s). Buy "Light Cooking"; it will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars A couple's guide to delicious food in dieters' portions........1999-11-19

This cookbook offers recipes for sumptuous meals using what you'd never believe to be low-fat ingredients. The portions are designed to leave zero left-overs so there's no midnight temptation in the fridge. My partner and I have lost weight on these meals without being cheated of the joy of eating.

5 out of 5 stars The easiest and tastiest cokbook I've yet to come across........1999-08-11

I just started cooking not to long ago and I have been trying out lots and lots of cookbooks. I love eating healthy, low-fat foods and this book is absolutely wonderful. So far I have not had one bad meal using any of these recipes, and can not wait to try out more of them. It has a wide variety of entrees, side dishes, soups, salads, and wonderful desserts. I am usually only cooking for one or two but all of the recipes can be doubled easily and taste just as great. If you want to experience great low-fat cooking you can not pass up this book.

                    4 out of 5 stars A cute set for any food-loving pair.......2005-05-08

This set includes a book with recipes from various inns and restaurants in North America (Canada, Bermuda, United States). That might just inspire a romantic getaway since you'll feel like you know these inns after making their dishes. An index with contact information for each contributing inn is located in the back of the book.

The music is classical and well-chosen to be suitable background sound for couple cooking. Each piece is performed by the San Francisco String Quartet, which was founded by Sharon O'Connor herself back in 1975. Listeners will enjoy well-known classical tunes with this selection.

Each recipe feels like a romantic dinner just by reading it. The ingredients are straight-forward items you'd find in nearly any grocery market, but the steps to make those ingredients into a real meal will take more effort than your usual Hamburger Helper. It will be worth the work. The most important part of the cooking process is that you and your better half will be together, enjoying the music and recipes together.

I'll admit, I'm one of those people who relishes in spending just as much time preparing a meal as devouring it. Not everyone feels that way though, even if you are cooking alongside the one you love accompanied by gentle classical music. Overall, this is a darling idea and a well-designed set. I think it is a uniquely thoughtful wedding gift and a sweet present that encourages more "quality" time in the kitchen with the one you love.

I gave this set four out of five stars because as nice as this set is, it does take a leap of faith to try recipes from a book marketed on its romantic appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Dinners for Two.......2002-04-04

This cookbook and CD offer a wonderful way to bring romance into the home. I found the recipes to be completely accessible and fun to make. The music is lovely and soothing. The perfect duo to use for romatic occasions!

                    3 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2001-01-12

The CD of classical music is great, but the recipies are a little high-scale for the average cook and not very practical for the average couple. However, if you enjoy gourmet cooking, this is the book for you.
