A great American Soldier!.......2002-10-01
Triplet is eloquent, wrote vividly, and an unervingly visceral tongue for a writer. His acerbic tone and honesty was quite refreshing and even unsettling. His life experience is a tribute to the American race.
I just loved those goofy Filipino stories Triplet told. I have heard about the actions these Filipinos guerillas did back in WW2, but not what happened during their down times, or more importantly their civil life after the war. Here's a story of their lives from an American officer in charge.
A powerful, dramatic, first-hand look.......2001-10-11
In The Philippines And Okinawa: A Memoir, 1945-1948 is the third volume of the autobiography of Colonel William S. Triplet. It completes his personal story by recounting the American occupations after World War II. From overseeing the temporary burial of thirteen thousand U.S. servicemen to rounding up Japanese holdouts who refused to believe the war was ended, In The Philippines And Okinawa is a powerful, dramatic, first-hand look at the dawn of a new history arising from the horrors and heroism of World War II. A very highly recommended contribution to military history collections dedicated to the aftermath of the war in the Pacific.
Book Description
Werner Heisenberg's genius and his place at the forefront of modern physics are unquestioned. His decision to remain in Germany throughout the Third Reich and his role in Hitler's atomic bomb project are still topics of heated debate. UNCERTAINTY is David Cassidy's compelling portrait of this brilliant, ambitious, and controversial scientist. It is the definitive Heisenberg biography, as well as a striking evocation of the development of quantum physics, the rise of Nazism, and the dawn of the atomic age.
Customer Reviews:
Complete biography.......2004-12-31
As the reviews in at the backcover stated, the writer deals thoroughly and fairly with the controversies surrounding this great scientist. This book gives a good overview of the man himself, his science, and the times he lived through. It is one of those works of enormous scope, that will probably not be topped. Just like the Making of the Atomic bomb or other alike tour the force works, it makes me wonder how many letters, sources, and interviews must have been worked through to make the picture come alive.
This is the definitive work on Heisenberg, and it gives also the best explanation of how the quantum Copenhagen interpretation as well as the uncertainty principle work! So it is recommended for historians, for scientists, or people who have an interest in both. Very highly recommended!
Great stuff!!.......2004-11-05
"Uncertainty" is an outstanding piece of biographical and history of science writing. The only shortcomings of the book, in my view, are: 1) the short shrift it gives to WH's life and career post-WWII; and 2) its sometimes overly abstruse exposition of WH's science. Concerning this last point, Cassidy is clearly writing for an expert (or at least highly sophisticated lay) audience. Though I got the gist of much of the specialist detail in "Uncertainty", I would have appreciated and greatly profited from some more general discussion along the way. That said, Cassidy paints the science in sufficiently broad strokes that even the non-specialist can grasp (with some effort!) something of the beauty and complexity of quantum physics. I have always been fascinated with quantum physics. Having just finished "Uncertainty" I am all the more intent on brushing up my math and doing some serious study of the discipline. Books like "Uncertainty" inspire the quest for knowledge. Cassidy is to be commended.
WOW what a book - 5 stars*****.......2001-12-30
A must for everyone. I would like to express my gratitude to his wife Janet for her many years of encourangement. If it was not for her would this great book have been created? Thank you Janet for the awesome book ( and i almost forgot to the author David Cassidy)
A very serious book about a very serious matter.......2001-03-05
This book is not for the lighthearted. It is an excellent account of the life of Werner Heisenberg and of the strong nationalism that blinsided him to the situation in Nazi Germany. His brilliance as a first rate physicist notwithstanding, the book shows by example what happens to science when it becomes totally subservient to a totalitarian regime and shows the problems of regional politics overtaken by a ruthless dictator in the funding of science. The fine line that Heisenberg walked did not diminished his scientific accomplishment but did not excuse him from his participation in a scientific enterprise that could very well have changed the course of history had it been successful, a Nazi A-bomb. The book is also a lesson on the results of elitism in science and it shows how the Nazis cheated themselves from an even greater role in nuclear physics because of their policies.
Heisenberg is Great.......2000-12-31
This book is superb as a biography and as history of Quantum Mechanics. As you read the pages you grow together with Heisenberg in his daily life and his achievements in Physics. You start to understand how the Quantum Mechanics was founded, how trial and error methods eventually developed into such a fundemental theory. The book is very voluminious but if you have patient in reading it on each line you live the life of a great man. I found it very interesting that even though he is one of the great founders of the Quantum Physics, he had more vacations than me and enjojed the life better than me. It shows that to be a good scientist you just have to carry your brain and think while wandering in the country side. Isn't it great. Apparently he did not even know Matrix Theory until Bohr showed him. Every page is full with history, science and suprise. Story is so vivid that you can even visualise the streets of Munich or other German towns as you read the book. Grat book,a lot of pages in fine print but worth of it.

Great resource!.......2007-02-08
This is a great resource to have for travelling. I love the tabbed setup that makes it easy to get to the section I need. Obviously a lot of thought was put in to making the book (with an amazing amount of info.) as easy to use as possible.
It is obvious that a great deal of thought and experimentation has been put forth in the making of this valuable resource!
After being gf (and other things free) for 5 years, I appreciate the resource as it will make it far more possible for me to visit Italy (and other countries in my future) maintaining my health as much as possible along the way! Well done!
I have dining cards and they work quite well, but the next time I travel, I will be packing this book to take as well, without a doubt!

A Wonderful Resource For Dining Out Gluten Free.......2007-01-25
Eating when you're away from your own home is always a challenge when you are on a special diet.
In "Let's Eat Out!" Koeller and La France have put together an impressive amount of information to make life easier for travelers and people who just want to eat out with family and friends.
I found the book a bit difficult at first because there is just so much content to sort out. It's definitely not a book to digest in one sitting!
I soon realized it really is a combination of broad reference guide and quick reference "cheat sheets." Once that became clear, it was much easier to scan and use the table of contents and index to find specific information. You can choose to just use the quick guides or go to the more detailed explanations.
All in all, the authors cover a very broad topic in an orderly fashion that makes it easy to locate information for a variety of situations. They use 7 common cuisine types, from American Steak and Seafood to Thai, to analyze the issues a diner can expect to face. They offer comments on the ingredients, the way food is prepared and on likely sources of hidden cross contamination.
After you read a couple of these, you begin to see the patterns and it would not be so difficult to apply the same process to another type of food. As they point out, it's all about educating yourself and learning what questions to ask.
Poring through their food/menu analysis, I discovered to my dismay that the item I had been selecting from a fast food restaurant most likely contains hidden gluten that I would not have thought to question. I did wonder why I didn't feel good every time I ate there!
Not only does the book cover information about individual foods, styles of cuisine, and 10 common food allergens, it also provides specific information about travel including contact information for individual airlines and the special diets they provide, contact information for associations and organizations in many parts of the world and even some translation phrases.
I'd recommend "Let's Eat Out!" as a valuable reference book. It's especially useful for those who frequently eat out or travel and even better, those who'd like to eat out more but have hesitated to take the risk. It could open up a whole new world.
The authors deserve the recognition that their book received as a Benjamin Franklin award finalist for 2006 in the Health (Wellness/Nutrition) category.
For gluten intolerance and food sensitivities.......2007-01-20
"Let's Eat Out!" covers a very difficult topic, restaurant dining for people with food allergies and intolerances. For adults who should avoid top allergens due to mild to moderate food allergies and intolerances, this can be a very useful book. I have already referenced it a few times for some restaurant inspiration, outside of my usual Asian selections.
The book itself is stylishly laid out with color-coded chapters, strategically placed photographs, useful charts, and sample menus. It addresses ten of the most common food allergens: dairy, eggs, wheat, gluten (an intolerance), soy, peanuts, tree nuts, corn, fish, and shellfish.
It should be noted, that this book was written with celiac disease, multiple food "sensitivities", and gluten intolerance in mind. It may not be very appropriate for those who have life-threatening food allergies or severe intolerances. This is not to blame the authors. The various styles of food preparation combined with a high risk of cross-contamination in food service kitchens, make this a complicated area to address. Though, as one food allergy mom pointed out to me, the "Allergy-Free" title is a bit deceiving in this respect.
Also, for those who do have true food allergies, this book should not be used as a dining bible, but more as a suggestion based resource for further research and diligence. As someone who lives with a milk protein allergy, I unfortunately noted many errors with respect to the foods listed as "not containing the allergen." Guacamole (often made with sour cream), margarine (frequently contains lactose and/or milk protein), and sausages (many brands contain cheese) were just a few that caused me to raise the red flag. Your own questions and food label reading would still be required when utilizing this book.
Luckily, the authors do relay what questions to ask, and in many different languages. Kim Koeller has traveled extensively while living with multiple food allergies. This is well evidenced by the resources provided, including a multi-lingual phrase section and what seems to be a very useful airline guide. For those most interested in travel, the authors of "Let's Eat Out!" have also produced a "Multi-Lingual Phrase Passport" for food allergies that is pocket-sized. I thought this was a very handy little guide!
Let's Eat Out!.......2007-01-09
Basically, it says be suspicious of EVERYTHING. As a Celiac, I am already. This book did not help me and I was disappointed but I can see how it might help someone newly diagnosed. Being vigilant is the key.
Its OK...........2006-12-22
I was a little disapointed because many of the allergy graphs show gluten as possible, so that isn't much of a help, since that was already a given. I guess if you are looking for some where to START looking for gluten in your food, then this is a place to start. If you have been doing it for a while, then you really don't need this book....
Book Description
Hundreds of tasty, nutritious recipes and menus without wheat or gluten.
Who must avoid wheat? People with celiac disease, who are unable to tolerate wheat, and people with food allergies-all in all, an estimated 10 to 15 percent of Americans. Wheat and wheat products are present in some form in almost every processed food product-not just bread, cereal, pasta, and other flour-based products, but also such unexpected items as licorice, cream soups, sauces, condiments, and even some medicines. Managing to eat a healthful diet that completely eliminates this nearly ubiquitous grain can be a real challenge. Written by a leader in the field of cooking for people with food sensitivities, Wheat-Free Recipes makes it possible to enjoy all of your favorite foods without wheat or gluten, including breads, pancakes, waffles, muffins, biscuits, cookies, cakes, casseroles-even pizza.
Having a wheat sensitivity no longer means resigning yourself to dietary boredom or settling for foods with unhealthful levels of fat or salt in an attempt to make up for missing flavor. Dr. Fenster's recipes emphasize fresh, wholesome ingredients and simple, clear instructions that make for easy, fail-proof preparation of mouthwatering meals.

AWESOME INFO!!!.......2007-05-27
Wow, I feel like I have been living in the dark ages until I learned about all these wonderful methods and products to prepare gluten -free foods!!!
This info is a tremendous eye-opener!
Thank you so much and I hope to see more books on this topic!
Keep up the great work Carol Fenster! ...you ROCK!
PS: We would also love to see some healthier sweetening options presented, other than white sugar...
A cookbook with bread that feels, looks, & tastes like regular bread.......2007-03-23
As we have traveled the gluten-free cooking road we have found a lot of recipes that get rave reviews that I have decided are made by those who don't know what good food tastes like. This cookbook, however, has wonderful recipes for bread, brownies, etc. The sandwich bread is especially good, we add flax meal to it to add fiber. My children love it.
Best Gluten Free Cookbook I've Found!.......2007-03-07
This is the best gluten free cookbook I've found, and I've tried a number of them since I was diagnosed gluten intolerant 4 years ago. I had about given up thinking I'd ever enjoy bread the way I used to, but I have been truly amazed by every item I've made from Carol Fenster's book. Even my husband, who can eat wheat, loves these breads! I am a naturopathic doctor, and see many patients who are gluten intolerant; I recommend this book to all of them! If you are feeling overwhelmed by a restricted diet, this book will bring back the joy of eating! Try the French bread first; it's easy, quick and it will restore your faith. Note: I have always used the sorghum-corn flour blend, so that's what I base this review on.
Wheat-Free Recipes and Menus.......2007-01-10
This is an excellent book and easy to use. The flour mix recipes are easy and wonderful to use in the recipes. The cakes, breads and such are just as good the "Normal" breads. My kids even love them.
Great idea, bad follow thru.......2006-08-17
I was really looking forward to this book and thought the recipes sounded great and then I began to test them, several were so bad I just tossed in the garbage because I couldn't eat it. I found very few recipes I really liked. I am so upset because I only have one Gluten free cookbook and this was it.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Is this the best we can do?.......2004-12-06
Many of the recipes in this book are very good, but some are only ok. There are some problems with some of them - for example the crepe recipe: it's way too thick. Perhaps the crepe recipe and the pancake recipe were reversed? There have been other errors in the recipes that make me want a better wheat-free cookbook. Where is it?
This is my most-used cookbook.......2003-02-07
The recipes in this book are delicious and also well-written. Although there are recipes for many different types of food, my three favorites are for traditional "wheat-replacers": Spice Cake, Soup Dumplings, and Pizza Crust. I would agree with the other reviewer below that Dr. Fenster does tend to use too much sugar -- who puts sugar in pizza crust? But the recipes are very flexible, and I find if I change the amount of sugar, or add carrot shreddings to a cake, or cream cheese to a dumpling - the recipes still work great! I highly recommend this book, not only does it include a ton of gluten-free cooking advice, but also has non-dairy substitutes for every recipe. I also like that she writes, for example, "1 teaspoon GF vanilla" instead of simply "1 teaspoon vanilla." For the recently-diagnosed, this is a great reminder to check _all_ ingredients for gluten.
Delicious Dining is really true!!.......2002-01-09
Carol Fenster has given all of us that must eat wheat and gluten free such a gift! The time that it must have taken her to perfect such wonderful recipes is truly something not many have the time or talent to do. She has covered just about everything to make eating wheat and gluten free most delicious, indeed! Besides the delicious recipes she has included menus for Quick and Easy Dinners, Reduced Fat, Low Calorie Meals, Fish & Seafood Menus, Poultry Menus, Southwestern Menus and Meatless Meals. And there are more treasures in the back of this great cookbook that are so helpful such as Wheat Flour Equivalents, Substitutes, HIdden Sources of Wheat, Mail-Order Sources etc. If you need to eat wheat or gluten free this cookbook just must be a part of your life! I wouldn't know what to do wtihout it! It surely is a "must buy" cookbook!
Great buy for celiacs and those with gluten-intolerance!.......2001-07-24
This book is a great investment (and for those of us who live on gluten-free food, we all know how HARD it is to find anything for celiacs that's a bargain!)! It has over 200 recipies, but to be honest, there are a few that don't come out all that great. Still, a few out of 200 still makes this book a great investment!
This book is divided by section; Breads: yeast breads, quick breads and breakfast breads; Breakfast and Brunch: breads, meats, cereals, casseroles and other dishes; Pasta, Grains, Beans and Rice: pasta, grains, beans and rice; Desserts: cakes, bars and cookies, fruit desserts, puddings and custards, pies, miscellaneous; Soups: soups and soup components; Sauces and Salad Dressings: salad dressings, chutney and salsa, sauces for entrees or vegetables, dessert sauces and miscellaneous; Vegetables: potatoes and miscellaneous; Poultry: grilled chicken, stove-top chicken, and baked dishes; Fish and Seafood: fish and shellfish; Meats - Beef and Pork: beef, mixed meats, and pork & ham; Menus and finally, Appendices with valuable info like wheat flour equivalents and substitutes for wheat as a thickener.
My only major complaint (apart from that some of the recipies don't turn out half as well as they sound, but then again, that's to be expected on a gluten-free diet), is that unless you like Mexican / south-western food, about a quarter of these recipies are of no use to you. Before being diagnosed with celiac I used to get terrible indigestion (the author claims her only problem with wheat and gluten was a runny nose and stuffy sinuses). For anyone who is a celiac, and who has experienced the horrible side effects of simply eating food before a diagnosis is established, you probably want to AVOID foods that traditionally cause heartburn or gas or other symptoms similar to what I call a 'wheat-attack'. I'm sure plenty of people out there are able to handle Mexican / south-western food, but a huge number of celiacs are sensitive to all kinds of food, and kicking food up with peppers and spices and whatever else is great if your sinuses are blocked, but after having heartburn for months on end, you might not be too eager to start cooking up a big ol' pot of chilli!
Over all, it's still a good buy. I mean, even though I don't see many celiacs (espically soon after their diagnosis) cooking some of these things, it's a good book to have. You can make lots of things that are fairly "soft" on your tummy, and maybe after a little while (it's been almost 2 years since my diagnosis and I STILL won't touch a pot of chilli!) you can try some of these more spicy variations in the kitchen. If you're simply gluten-intolerant, or have sinus problems like the author, then this book is a great investment! If I weren't a celiac I'd definately give it 5 stars!
A wonderful guide to cooking without wheat or gluten..........2000-05-27
This book is chock-full of great recipes! There are over 200 recipes for everything from breads to pizza to desserts to sauces. There is a whole section devoted to menus, to help you plan a meal around the foods in the book. There are several wonderful appendices, including one on wheat flour equivalents, hidden sources of wheat, baking with dairy substitutes, and mail order sources for some of the more obscure ingredients used.
My only quibble with this book is that it does use a fair amount of sugar (although brown, rather than white) in some recipes, which is not as healthy as it might be. But the author has another book which addresses this issue: Special Diet Solutions - Healthy cooking without wheat, gluten, dairy, eggs, yeast or refined sugar.
All in all this is a marvelous book for anyone who is dealing with a wheat or glueten food allergy or sensitivity. Don't hesitate!

Monet's Palate - A Gastronomic View from the Gardens of Giverny
Get the first edition if you can.......2004-09-19
This book is an abreviated version of Entertaining in the French Style. This is its only fault. I bought the original edition out of curiosity since the recipes in the New Entertaining were so good. It turns out that some of the easier dishes in Entertaining were thrown out for the sake of brevity. These recipes are also very good and worthy of the attention of all lovers of the New entertaining. With Verge's recipes more is always merrier.
A wonderful Book!!.......2004-02-24
Not only does Verge offer some very easy to accomplish recipes, (I say easy, I am an experienced cook)) but he also offers wine suggestions which I really found helpful. The entire tone of this book is helpful, he will section off the book as to an entire meal, including wine and dessert. Mostly his style of eating the food, savoring the wine and dessert (all complimenting each other) makes it simple. Most of the ingredients are found by anyone who is proficient in the kitchen. He captures the spirit of enjoyment in fine dining...something Americans need desperately!!! We have lost the art of food.... that's why we are all shoveling fast food and horrible stuff from these "fusion chains" in. Viva la Roger!!!! Slow down, take pride in the food you have so beautifully created and sip your wine.
My most favorite recipe book.......2003-08-04
I bought this book some time ago and it is my favorite - notice that i have a lot of cooking books. Every recipe out of this book is well explained, easy to follow and turns out great. Every dish I tried out of this book was a success and earned many compliments by my guests who tried them.
I don't at all agree with the above reviewer re. Verge's ingredients. All ingredients are available at a normal well-equipped grocery store and we live in the Mid-West not in NY or CA...
But lets say you can't find one of the ingredients then just replace it with a similar item that tastes similar - it works fine. In sum, if you plan to bring a little more variety onto the table and your taste buds can handle more than the standard foods (pizza, hotdogs, hamburgers) then stick to this book. I hope I will not run out of Verge's recipes and am looking forward to add more of his cookbooks to my library.
A wonderful book.......2000-06-02
This is a wonderful cookbook that not only delivers wonderful recipes but looks good at the same time. Roger Verge is informative and entertaining as he walks you through numerous planned meals. I have tried many of the recipes in this book and found all of them to be excellent.
