Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

    Book Description

Although Nelson dominates the naval history of the late eighteenth century, in many respects his achievements marked the culmination of a developing tactical tradition in the Royal Navy. The contribution of his predecessors has been neglected, however, largely because so few admirals have received proper modern study. Precursors of Nelson adjusts the record by providing a series of in-depth biographical essays of the most important figures of the period, each written by a well-known specialist in the field. Contributors include Peter le Fevre on Torrington, John B. Hattendorf on Rook and Shovell, Timothy Bean and Ann Coats on Leake, Chris Ware on Byng, David Aldridge on Norris, Daniel Baugh on Wager, Richard Harding on Vernon, Nicolas Rodger on Anson, Ruddock Mackay on Hawke, Kenneth Breen on Rodney, Roger Knight on Howe, Michael Duffy on Hood, Roger Morris on Barham, Pat Crimmin on St. Vincent, Andrew Lambert on Cornwallis, and Brian Lavery on Keith.

The extraordinary memoir of the man who spearheaded the rebuilding of the German navy after World War I-and ultimately ended up at odds with Hitler Erich Raeder joined the German Navy in 1894 and rose through its ranks to become commander in chief in 1935. In Grand Admiral he describes his forty-nine years in the navy, including the battle strategy that won him international fame during World War I and the tactical disagreements with Hitler that led to his final break with the Führer in early 1943. Though not a Nazi party member, Raeder was part of Hitler's war planning group, and Grand Admiral paints a vivid picture of what took place at Hitler's secret staff meetings before the invasions of Poland, Norway, and Russia. It also supplies previously undisclosed information about Operation Sea Lion, the proposed invasion of England.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting acount.......2004-12-21

Few remmember much about Germany's WWII Navy. Bismark and submarines come to mind. The fact that Hitler gave his power to Adiral Doenitz upon defeat is usually forgotten accept for WWII buffs and those fascinated by the Nazi elite. THis book delves into something more interesting, the rise and fall of Eric Raeder one time Grand Admiral of the German Fleet. He had served in the High seas fleet and suffered the years of decline during the 20s. Although in some ways a defense for his role in Nazism this book is nevertheless a very interesting look into the German navy, one arm of Nazism that was left to some extent untouched by the horrors of thuggish fascism. An interesting look at another side of WWII, from a branch often forgotten about.

3 out of 5 stars Not What You First Thought.......2003-04-06

Everything detailed in this book is an ex post facto defense to Raeder's Nuremberg sentencing. What began as a memoir on his early childhood and his enlistment in the navy quickly becomes what appears to be just an insider's description of the Imperial Navy, the aftermath of WWI and the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, the need for Germany to protect itself against France and Poland, and various other fronts which Raeder tediously presents before the reader. Toward the middle of the book and following to the back cover, Raeder continues to bring up Nuremberg, when you truly get the idea that this book was more an explanation than a history, more a document to counter the Allied perspective than a memoir, and more a tedious legal defense than an engaging history. As the Grand Admiral of the Navy, Raeder's perspective is significant to a comprehensive reading about the war, yet his effort falls in the same barrel as the inept rendition by Patton (War As I Knew It).

      4 out of 5 stars A Noble Defeat.......2001-07-25

This is perhaps one of the most interesting of the voluminous pantheon of memoirs published in the aftermath of World War II. Raeder was already an old man when WWII started, and a series of strategic and tactical mistakes made by both he and Hitler rendered even the most lethal Kreigsmarine units useless.

I like the "inside story" Adm. Raeder provides -- the petty jealousies of the German military leadership, the personal rivalry with Hermann Goering over the fate of naval aviation.

Perhaps the weakest element of this book is Raeder's biases and constant reassertion of his own honorable status. Still, that seems to be the only thing that drags this otherwise revealing work down. A must read for naval, especially battleship, enthusiasts.

                    Book Description

This twelfth and final volume of The Correspondence of William James concludes the series of William James's correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues that began with volume 4. The first three volumes were devoted to the letters exchanged between the brothers William and Henry James. Consisting of some 600 letters, with an additional 650 letters calendared, this final volume gives a complete accounting of James's known correspondence from April of 1908 to 21 August 1910, inclusive, the last letter having been written five days before James's death on 26 August 1910. The volume also accounts for undated letters, as well as letters located too late to be included in their proper chronological place in the preceding volumes. The correspondence takes place against a background of aging and illness. First came Henry's collapse in the spring of 1910, which led William and Alice to undertake their last voyage to Europe. Leaving wife and brother in England, William journeyed to Paris in hopes that a doctor there could ease the pain in his chest, and then to Bad-Nauheim. There, although the results from X rays and measurements of his blood gave him hope, his condition did not improve. William wandered around Europe, joined by his wife and brother, before boarding a steamer for Quebec. By then an invalid, unable on most days to make even simple entries in his diary, he traveled from Montreal to Chocorua, where he died in the arms of his wife.

Professionally there are three major events during this period in James's life. First was the delivery at Manchester College, Oxford, of the Hibbert Lectures on the present condition of philosophy, published in 1908 as A Pluralistic Universe. As was his habit, James sent numerous complimentary copies of his book and received many thoughtful responses, which provide a rare opportunity to see how differently diverse readers interpret the same book. Next came publication of The Meaning of Truth, which forced James to return to the defense of the pragmatic conception of truth. The third was his work on a textbook in metaphysics that was to become the posthumously published Some Problems of Philosophy.

Most of James's philosophical correspondents remain the same as in the previous volume: John Dewey, Henri Bergson, Francis Herbert Bradley, Ferdinand Canning Schiller, Charles Sanders Peirce, Ralph Barton Perry, William Pepperell Montague, Horace Meyer Kallen, Arthur Oncken Lovejoy, Charles Augustus Strong, and Dickinson Sergeant Miller. With the French philosopher Émile Boutroux and the German pragmatist Julius Goldstein there is more extensive correspondence in this volume than in the previous one. Author Rondalyn Varney Whitney, a pediatric occupational therapist, is the mother of Zac, a child who suffers from nonverbal learning disorder, or NLD. By definition, NLD is a neurological defect in children who are unable to recognize the nonverbal clues that make up 50 percent of communication. In Bridging the Gap, Whitney seamlessly weaves practical professional advice throughout the account of her passionate involvement with her son. She writes, "I believe that NLD, now thought to be as prevalent as dyslexia, is a difference and not a flaw." She also warns parents and teachers that kids with NLD are likely to be misdiagnosed as lazy or defiant, so she urges readers to consider both the strengths (high intelligence and advanced verbal skills and memory) and weaknesses (low visual, spatial, and motor skills and deficits in social communication) of these kids.

Whitney focuses on NLD as a unique learning style, rather than a disability, offering a brilliantly realized account of a day in the life of a child with NLD. Other chapters address specific problems, including finding the right school, telling your child about the diagnosis, teaching social skills, negotiating the maze of interventions, and caring for self and spouse. Each chapter balances vivid case examples with thoughtful strategies. This is an exceptional book--moving, hopeful, and grounded in the wisdom of a seasoned professional and the love of a mother for her unique child. --Barbara Mackoff

                    Book Description

Millions of children suffer from Nonverbal Learning Disorder, a neurological deficit that prevents them from understanding nonverbal cues like tone of voice and facial expression. Though they are exceptionally bright and extremely articulate, these children often have difficulty in social situations-and can become depressed, withdrawn, or anxious. In Bridging the Gap, Rondalyn Varney Whitney-a pediatric occupational therapist and the parent of a child with NLD-offers practical suggestions that will help parents put their child on the path to a happy, fulfilling life.

Absolutely fantastic. Written by the parent of an NLD child with wit and wisdom, very informative without being heavy, often humorous, but from this book I have gained much knowledge about NLD that I am using in my teaching as a special education teacher. I recommend this book to parents and professionals.

THis is an EXCELLENT book in content. It is written by a mother with a child with NVLD. It is not written with the school personnel in mind, but with the parents in mind and what the parents can do. She has very practical suggestions and gives examples of how these have worked with her child.

However - the book binding itself is very poor. It is a Perigee book published by the Berkley Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Putnam, Inc. On my first reading 5 clumps of pages came out of the binding, all at various parts of the book and despite my intense TLC after the first clump fell out. I am very disappointed. This was purchased as a NEW book, not used.

I have a child who has been newly diagnosed with Nonverbal Learning Disorder. Reading this book provided an incredible amount of clarity to a rather confusing constellation of issues that I, as a parent, am trying to decipher. I found its information helpful and will use it as a guide in choosing the right schools, therapies and parenting techniques. It also provides a very good descriptive of the disorder which can be provided to teachers, so that they have a succinct understanding of possible issues.

5 out of 5 stars Great Help for Parents of Kids with NLD.......2006-01-17

Bridging the Gap was a light at the end of a tunnel for me as a parent of a child recently diagnosed with NLD. Ms. Whitney paints a realistic but hopeful picture of the difficulties and gifts of raising kids with this very common yet misunderstood disorder, through the insight both personally and professionally that she offers. She writes proudly and candidly about her son Zachary and the highs and lows of her very personal journey through the amazing web of understanding NLD. This book saved my soul and it touched me in ways I never dreamed possible. You'll laugh through your tears and leave it with understanding and empowerment. A must read for parents.

                    3 out of 5 stars Some innacuracies..........2005-12-24

At various times in my life, I have been described as autistic, Elective mutism with autistic features (high-functioning autism did not exist when I was a child), Asperger's, and Non-Verbal Learning Disorder. Obviously, if one person can have all of these diagnoses, there is rather more crossover than the author is willing to admit, though my case is complicated by a traumatic brain injury which flipped my IQ scores when I was 8 (prior to 8, higher performance, after 8, higher verbal). "Coincidentally", it is after the head injury that I started being able to construct sentences on my own, instead of using delayed echolalia and reading off of a page. And Klin & Volkmar's research suggests that some 70% of children diagnosed Asperger's also meet the criteria for NLD. They have even suggested that the higher performance IQ be a criteria for HFA, and the higher verbal IQ be a criteria for Asperger's!
Apparently unlike the author, I know a lot of people on the autism spectrum and with Asperger's Syndrome (I help run a support group for adults on the spectrum, and work as a habilitative and respite care provider as well). NOT ALL OF US ARE VISUAL LEARNERS. I know several talented musicians who are decidedly on the autistic side who are auditory learners, and at least 2 people who are autistic who can pick up foreign languages like other people pick up hobbies (I'm not that good, but I read French, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Arabic, and speak Arabic and French semi-fluently).

The local Autism/Aspie support group accepts people with all of these diagnoses (as well as Right Hemisphere Learning Disorder), because the social disabilities are similar. And I know at least one person diagnosed NLD as a child who is definitely more of an Aspie!

DSI (Sensory Integration Dsyfunction) is common to all of these disorders as well. If your child is diagnosed with NLD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Right Hemisphere Learning Disorder, and does NOT have DSI, they probably have the wrong diagnosis. It is entirely possible to have a verbal IQ that is two standard deviations higher than a performance IQ, and not have a significant level of DSI or social disability, the two other major qualifiers for a diagnosis of NLD.

A lot of what was in the book was simply good advice for anyone with a special needs child. I currently have it out on loan to a parent whose son is diagnosed Autism, high-functioning.

And for anyone with a child with any of these diagnoses, the key to a succesful education is SOCIALIZATION. Push your child to learn as many social skills as young as possible, but do try not to overload him or her. I agree with the author that more than two therapies or a therapy and an aferschool activity per week is going to simply be overwhelming for most of us.

The recipes of chefs and other food profressionals are undoubtedly delicious, but dishes perfected over time are proven winners. This is the fare of Coastal Cooking, John Shields's collection of 125 recipes from the Atlantic, Pacific, Gulf Coasts, and Hawaii. Shields journeyed far and wide to retrieve recipes such as Bar Harbor Lobster Bisque, Seabolt Smokehouse Salmon Cakes, Leroy's Punta Gorda Shrimp Creole, and Herb-Roasted Rack of Oregon Lamb--food that reflects the rich gastronomic life of our water-skirting regions. His collection is wonderfully varied, saluting not only classic dishes, but unusual fare like Salinas Bibb Salad with Gorgonzola and Toasted Hazelnuts, Arroz con Pollo a la Cubano, and Mussels with Smoked Salmon and Cream--in short, a native American cuisine that's rarely been as originally or comprehensively compiled.

The book also includes bread formulas, such as Esalen Zucchini Poppyseed Bread and Old-fashioned Hushpuppies, and desserts like Cannon Beach Marionberry Cobbler and Choclate Velvet Cheesecake. In addition, Shields provides comprehensive ingredient info plus regional snapshots, as he calls them, of Tangier Island, Virginia, among other recipe sources. Recipe headnotes offer information about contributors, and color photos throughout illustrate dishes or depict regional scenes. --Arthur Boehm

                      Book Description

John Shields, author of Chesapeake Bay Cooking and host of the public television series Coastal Cooking in America with John Shields, traveled from Maine to Miami and Big Sur to Baja to bring back the best of America’s coastal cuisine. The recipes encompass much more than seafood and include all of the ingredients—meat, poultry, game, fruits and vegetables in abundance—that have made the coastal parts of America particularly rich in culinary traditions.

Come along with John Shields to a New England clambake (complete with instructions on how to make an authentic one on a beach), dig into Cheese and Garlic Grits with Shrimp and Tasso Gravy in Baton Rouge, sample Savannah She-Crab Soup, savor California Cobb Salad or Big Apple Clam Chowder, and finish off with a luscious Dulce de Leche Bread Pudding.

This treasury of the very best recipes from professional chefs and local folks alike will expand your culinary horizons. His voyage of discovery led John Shields to the heart of Miami, both Little Haiti and Little Havana, where he learned the secrets of Haitian-Style flounder from Miss Liliane Nerette Louis, a vibrant neighborhood personality, as well as the Arroz con Pollo a la Cubano from chef Tony Piedra at the renowned Versailles restaurant.

In Oregon, John visited Tillamook County, where the cows outnumber the people, and sampled their famous cheddar in Tillamook Cheddar Cheese and Lager Soup, then ventured north to Blake Island, across the bay from Seattle, where he took part in the native American tradition that celebrates the wild Pacific salmon with an annual roast. He re-creates the experience for home cooks with a planked salmon recipe from Portland’s acclaimed Wildwood restaurant. On the Louisiana bayou, he uncovered the trick to a proper Crawdaddy Boil, then hopped a plane to Hawaii, where he found a recipe for a succulent stew using oxtails or lamb shanks and just three other ingredients that has become a part of his personal repertoire. Along the way, he collected beloved recipes for hometown favorites across the country—Boston-Style Baked Beans, South of the Mason-Dixon Line Cornbread, Bayou Seafood Gumbo, and many, many more.

The companion volume to the television series, Coastal Cooking with John Shields will give you everything you need to bring the bountiful flavors found along America’s coastline into your own kitchen.

I loved Chesapeake Bay Cooking by this author and I adore Coastal Cooking. For anyone who has loved cooking on or by the beach, this book is a must have. It's strong in seafood recipes but there is so much more. The Firefly Farms Goat Cheese Cheescake is to die for! Can't wait for the companion show.
