Book Description

George A. Forsyth took a determined stand against Sioux and Cheyenne Indians at the Battle of Beech Island in 1868 and in the process transformed this minor frontier skirmish into a legendary symbol of the American West. This engagement helped mold popular conception of Indian warfare and provided Forsyth with the reputation of being an intrepid Indian fighter like George Custer and Buffalo Bill. Although this image of Forsyth is not necessarily incorrect, it is certainly incomplete.
Forsyth began his military career with the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861. Like many other officers who would subsequently gain distinction in the Indian campaign of the West, he learned the art of warfare in the great battles of the Civil War. His ascendancy through the ranks paralleled the rise of the Union cavalry as an effective combat arm during the war, and his education as a cavalryman came under the watchful eye of Phil Sheridan, one of America's most compelling soldiers. The Forsyth-Sheridan relationship began on the Virginia battlefields and continued until 1881.
During this long period George Forsyth was one of Sheridan's most trusted aides, serving as the general's eyes and ears in countless military missions that took him from the banks of the Yellowstone to the sacred Black Hills and from the bayous of Reconstruction Louisiana to the palaces of Europe and Asia. Forsyth's varied military career was truly reflective of the army's role in the second half of the nineteenth century.
In addition to serving as an instrument of government Indian policy, the army carried out other important missions designed to foster internal development in the United States. These activities included exploring and mapping the remnants of the uncharted West: escorting railroad survey and construction crews and building forts along the major lines of commerce. As a staff officer, George Forsyth played an important part in all of these activities and more. Therefore, while this biography chronicles the life and military career of a remarkable soldier, it also provides fresh insight into the role that the United States Army played during the post-Civil War period.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting biography of a career soldier.......2005-12-18

Although George A. Forsyth participated in 88 engagements as a soldier in the Civil War and later was in many fights with the Indians on the Plains, it was for one encounter with the Cheyenne and Sioux that he is remembered: the Battle of Beecher Island, where he and a small force held off 750 besieging Indians on a small island in the Arickaree Fork of the Republican River in present-day Colorado for six days before help arrived. David Dixon relates this famous battle in full detail, but he also tells us the rest of Forsyth's life, which is pretty full and interesting.

Forsyth was born in 1837 in Pennsylvania and entered the army in the spring of 1861. He rose in rank from private to brigadier general in various cavalry units in the Civil War before being made chief of staff for Gen. Philip Sheridan.

After the war Forsyth was put in charge of an operation against the Cheyenne. It was in September 1868 that he had his famous fight on Beecher Island (named after Lt. Frederick Beecher who was killed there by the Indians). Forsyth was wounded three times. One strategic outcome of the action on Beecher Island was that Sheridan from this time on would utilize only large-scale campaigns against the Indians (Forsyth had been in charge of a small ranger-like force).

Once again on Sheridan's staff, Forsyth was on the 1874 Custer expedition to the Black Hills, during which he kept a diary that was later published. In 1875-76 he was sent by Washington on an inspection tour of various armies in Europe and Asia. In the 1880s he was in the southwest campaigning against the Apaches and commanded Ft. Huachuca, AZ. It was here that Forsyth was court-martialed on money mismanagement charges, found guilty, and formally reprimanded. In 1890 he retired from the army. He authored two books which were published in 1900 and died in Rockport, MA, in 1915.

Dixon is an excellent writer, scholarly but not dry and overly academic. He is obviously impressed with Forsyth's accomplishments, but not to the point of hero-worship. He relates his subject's story in detail, but keeps it interesting. The chapter on the Beecher Island fight unfolds dramatically in Dixon's hands. Those who are interested in army life in the Old West will find much to like about his biography of the "hero of Beecher Island."

4 out of 5 stars Appealing to the scholar and the casual reader... .......2005-01-11

The "hero" in the title of David Dixon's Hero of Beecher Island is George A. Forsyth, an Army officer and Renaissance man who, Zelig-like, seemed to be involved with every matter of import in turn of the century America. Friend of Custer and Bill Cody, enabler of railroad expansion, renowned Indian fighter, shaper of US Army Policy, explorer of Yellowstone, world traveler, enforcer of Reconstruction, and popular author, Dixon paints a picture of a Da Vinci with a Sharps rifle.
There is much information contained within the book about the changing face of the US Army in which Forsyth served and later commanded. Dixon carefully details Forsyth's military experience. We begin to get a sense of what changes were going on in the Army during Forsyth's life. The evolution of the calvary under Forsyth's mentor Phil Sheridan is documented in chapter three "You Have Got A Bully Fight on Hand" (52). Dixon continues delving into this military biographia in chapter four, "I'll Shoot Down Any Man" (61). Although this chapter is mostly about the tense struggle of Beecher Island, the centerpiece of the book, it's what leads Forsyth to Beecher Island that stands as most interesting. Dixon brings out the idea that the railroad and the military were hand in glove in the old West, providing a late twentieth century reader to reflect on similarities between this paradigm of the Old West and the military-industrial complex of the Cold War era. Dixon infers a similar parallel at the beginning of chapter six, "The Armies of Asia and Europe" with the quote that the U.S. Army was, ". . . comparatively unknown, least appreciated, persistently misunderstood, and, for political effect, frequently misrepresented and occasionally even recklessly maligned in our national legislative hall" (122). The parallels to today's military are unmistakable.
In "I'll Shoot Down Any Man," Dixon relates the battle of Beecher Island well, describing Forstyth as an incredibly brave, capable, and stoic commander; the glue that kept his Army irregulars together under withering Indian attack. It's a story as old as the Greeks, but Dixon handles its retelling with a light touch, drawing the reader into the tension filled atmosphere.
Related in chapter eight,"To the Scandal of the Service" (168), Forsyth's fall from grace, brought about by shady business deals, is jarring. Forsyth's character needed to be more fully rounded out before the introduction of his court martial. Up to this chapter, there had been no mention of possible improperties. Indeed, Forsyth had seemed squeaky clean, a devoted father, husband and officer. Worse, there's no discussion of how prevalent economic speculation was in the time period. Questions arise. Was it primarily a military crime? Was it a civilian problem as well? How was it seen in the "elite social classes"(169) that Army officers traveled in as second-class citizens? Dixon attempts to make the claim that Forsyth's head wound, sustained in the Beecher Island battle, had caused an insanity that made him mismanage his money. It seems odd, however, that the only way that this "madness" manifested itself was through bad business sense. Although Dixon writes, ". . . there is little doubt that Forsyth was. . . seriously afflicted with some mental disorder. . ." (186), from the evidence presented, the only mental disorder applicable seems to be greed and poor business sense.
Readers of Beecher Island are expected to have a good knowledge of turn of the century world history before picking up the book. Educated readers will be rewarded. Dixon tells a lucid story that is gripping at points and presented in a traditionally tragic style. Forsyth is portrayed as a great hero whose hubris eventually brings him low. However, a non-historian audience is bound to have problems. The book lacks contextualization of what was going on elsewhere in the world while Forsyth was shaping American culture. There's no sense of connectedness outside the biography, no asides that explain how Forsyth's opinion of the calvary compare to that of the calvary's place in the First World War. There's no sense of contradiction that a man helping to work for racial equality for Blacks in Reconstruction-era Louisiana could also help devise the Army's genocidal Indian policy. Dixon tosses around phrases like "The Burnt-Over District" (99) without defining them for the casual reader. He also has a tendency to not completely explain issues. In the chapter entitled, "The Armies of Asia and Europe," he mentions that Forsyth said that the Japanese army was 20 years ahead of anything in America but fails to explain why Forsyth thought so. (128) And finally, there's not enough convincing evidence to allow madness to explain the shoddy business speculation that brings Forsyth to end his life in shame. True, the book is a biography not a sociological study, but a man who was such a turn stone in such a far-reaching, influential part of American culture like the Old West, needs to be explored further for the non-professional historian.
Dixon accomplishes what he sets out to do in the title: explicating the life and military career of an important man. Perhaps with a different title, signifying a different focus, the book would have appealed to a wider audience. All of Forsyth's exploits are summed up in the words of an unidentified member of Forsyth's Yellowstone expedition. After Forsyth foolhardily attempted to ford a raging river and had to be pulled from it, someone said, "The colonel must have had a charmed life" (140). It is this charmed life, mated with Dixon's attention to detail and capable writing that could produce a Forsyth book that would appeal to both historian and casual reader alike.

If you think that cursing is the nation's foulest and most undiagnosed bad habit, and that it creates an unfavorable business image and is disparaging to relationships, then Cuss Control is right up your alley. Author James V. O'Connor, who runs a public relations firm, decided to write Cuss Control after appearing on Oprah Winfrey's television show. O'Connor was being quoted in various places at the time for proclaiming, as president of the Cuss Control Academy, that certain swear words were about to become commonplace as a result of Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky, and Viagra. When Oprah herself said that she wished she could stop swearing, O'Connor decided to turn his anti-cussing crusade into a book. Part of his complaint is about foul language, but O'Connor also makes a case for the role of cursing in the dumbing-down of language. He argues that in using profanity, the speaker is usually just being lazy, avoiding having to choose more descriptive words to express himself. Cursing, O'Connor writes, "does little to convey our real message or the fact that our education continued beyond fifth grade."

So, how do we reach this promised land where everyone sounds educated and no one swears? O'Connor suggests two paths: choose G-rated words, or--and this is his preference--recognize that the real remedy is to change your attitude. If you must subscribe to one or the other approach, it's tempting to recommend an attitude change over a vocabulary transformation, at least based on some of the suggestions here, which include ditching four-letter words in favor of "Dangnabit!" "Criminey!" "Curses!" "Gadzooks!" and "Nerts!" There's also a suggestion to create your own curse words. ("That's a bunch of Bolshevik." "You fudrucker." "I don't give a wick.") Regardless of your path to a cleaner vocabulary, Cuss Control is a decent read that doesn't take itself too seriously. After all, where else can you find chapter titles like "Cut the Shit, Now and Forever" and "The F Word: Stop Me Before I Say It Again." --John Russell

    Book Description

Finally--the cure for the common curse!

Faced with an epidemic of profanity, our country is in need of practical suggestions for breaking a habit that has ordinary citizens contributing to the decline of civility and good manners. It's not always easy to resist the urge to cuss, but foul language creates an unfavorable image, is damaging to relationships, and goes hand-in-hand with a negative attitude.

Now, James V. O'Connor--founder of the Cuss Control Academy--offers the first book to explain why we swear and how we can learn to hold our tongues. Cuss Control doesn't call for the total elimination of swearing, just for its confinement to situations where extreme emotion (think hammer, think thumb) or poetic license (think Rhett Butler's "Frankly, my dear. . .") demand it. His program for easing us off the gutter-talk highway involves alternative "potent phrases" for classic curses, including the F-word; ways to communicate clearly rather than use lazy language; and tips on adjusting your attitude and abolishing obscenities.

Packed with practical exercises and tips, as well as thoughtful reflection on how we've worked ourselves up into such a state of affairs, Cuss Control is a refreshing celebration of the joys of a civil tongue.

    4 out of 5 stars darn good.......2004-04-05

I was in the bookstore yesterday and the title of this book caught my eye. My first thought was "Why the @*!# should I control my cursing? That's when it struck me that my language has gotten a bit um...colorful lately and I bought the book. I'm happy to say that it's entertaining, clever and it makes it's case. Will it make me curb my salty tounge in the future? Well, for a little while anyway, yes.

5 out of 5 stars Ought to required reading for junior high!.......2003-01-19

Ooh, this book made me cringe. I recognized myself more times than I cared to. I bought this book for the specific reason to help me curb my cursing and not only did it curb it, it has pretty much eliminated it.

Mr. O'Connor does an excellent job keeping the reader's attention. I appreciated his explanation of the two types of cursing: causal and casual. I have been able to eliminate casual cursing from my vocabulary and for the most part do very well with causal cursing even to the point of hopping around shouting 'shoot, shoot, shoot' when I stumped my toe recently.

I wish this book were required reading in public schools. My son's junior high is rife with colorful language. I know his language must have been just as bad as everyone elses. I had him and his buddy read through the book, and even through faked shocked giggles at the list of 'dirty' words the book got the point across to them and I've noticed that their language has cleaned up. I've even seen a dramatic decreases in the "Oh Gods" and "Gods" they say. They both said the book made a point of letting them know how ignorant they looked when their language was peppered with foul words. No, I didn't get them to read all the book but enough to make a difference.

Who am I? Well, suprisingly enough, a middle class college educated housewife with a strong religious backing who had found her language filled with the 'f' word and the cursing habit seemed ingrained and hard to break. Until I read Mr. O'Connor's book. Cringe, cringe, cringe....but it was worth the squirming hard look at myself to break this habit. I have been relatively curse free now for three months. The lessons learned in this book are not easily forgotten!

5 out of 5 stars Jiminy Christmas, this is a gosh darn stinking good book!.......2001-02-16

I first learned about this book when I saw the author (and two imposters) on the game show "To Tell the Truth". One of the panelists, comedienne Paula Poundstone (besides picking the wrong guy as the REAL James V. O'Connor), seemed to have a problem with the very idea of people encouraging others and themselves to clean up their language. After all, she curses and even allows her children to curse. Well, Paula, I think even you might enjoy this book if you actually read it. Far from advocating censorship, this book can be a valuable help to those who want to curb something that is as much a bad habit as smoking. Plus it is very entertaining, even hilarious in some places.

O'Connor is assuredly no stick-in-the-mud. There are probably more bad words used in this book than in 95% of the books out there, but they are there to make a point. When you read how these words are used, you can see how ridiculous they really sound. Plus, he gives many ideas for word substitutes, but he goes beyond that. Differentiating between "casual" and "causal" cursing, he suggests that it is easier to get rid of casual swearing. As for the causal, he attempts to attack it at the root, which is often anger and frustration, and points out that an attitude change is what is needed. If nothing else, this book makes you more aware of your use of language and how it affects you at work, at home, and, yes, in traffic. I know a guy who read this book and his cursing was curbed almost immediately because he was more aware and alert to it. (What, do you think I'm talking about myself? Hey, someone who knows me might be reading this right now, so keep your doggoned mouth shut!)

5 out of 5 stars shockingly thought provoking.......2000-11-15

I bought this book because it received high ratings in one of my magazines: sort of half as a joke and half because I did feel like I was cussing too much.

This book was hilarious and not at all preachy. He used humor very effectively for deterring cussing. He's right, when you think about what you are ACTUALLY, literally saying...a lot of cuss phrases sound really stupid.

The personal narratives were also really effective. Not only did you see how this kind of negativity hurt others but sometimes...when you actually see the cussing in print it's embarrassing. What I am saying is, when you read it you realize that you may be being a little irrational.

A great book...a humorous look at working towards a behavior change. Good fun.

    5 out of 5 stars A surprisingly entertaining read.......2000-06-23

A surprisingly entertaining read with a lession for all of us.If you want to clean up your mouth-or clean up your act-I strongly recommend Mr. O'Connor's highly original book.

Not getting any? Stuck in a dead-end job? Poverty got you by the balls? Do the few lovers you find turn out to be psychotic? Does it seem as if a sadistic "higher-power" is working your last nerve? E.K. Willey, the American Zen poet, knows all about such things. Through 12 years of almost consistent despair, he exploits and studies the absurdity of circumstance, and yet somehow finds the humor of it all. Put simply, this is the story of a young man's quest for complete spiritual awakening on a planet seemingly devoid of it. It's a story of loneliness, homelessness, beer, friends, scoundrels, psychedelics, lust, involuntary sexual deprivation, philosophy, art, Zen, and a mystical muse by the name of Shokya Candalla.

Amazing how what can often be the most important and gives us the best lessons can be considered to be the mundane-this book immortalizes the everyday and its lessons that too many of us take for granted. This book speaks-it's real, it's honest and that is a hell of a statememt.
              Highly recommended.

              5 out of 5 stars It's Got Everything!.......2001-03-30

Poverty, living on the streets, drug use, alcoholism, sex, laughter, poetry, a disposable god, a muse called Shokya Candalla -- this book has everything! E.K. Willey's prose is a new and bright light in the world of writing. No matter the tragic self-contradictory world he exploits, his humor is indeed its saving grace. If you don't mind a little cussing here and there, and a little dose of vulgarity mixed in with your common sense, then I implore you to read this book. If you're lucky enough to have friends, you'll be imploring them to do the same.

5 out of 5 stars IN PRAISE OF CUSS!.......2001-02-04

I have literally been in search of this book for years, and didn't even realize this till I was halfway through it. I've studied self-help books, religions, Yoga, acupressure, herbs and all sorts of means to improve my life, but when I read CUSS!, it came clear to me that my efforts were far too forced; that my very efforts to reach the goal were precisely what kept me from it. That goal being, simply, peace. But CUSS! is not just one of the greatest self-help books in disguise, it's a magnificent story to boot. Written in American slang, E.K. Willey takes us to the streets of America, as well as the mountains, canyons, caves, and deserts. A 12 year search for God, or at least a girlfriend. A crash course on American Zen, Shokya Candalla style, whom he considers to be his "true self". Throw one disposable god in for good measure - called the goc (the god of circumstance) - and now you have one of the most original books on the market today. I'm praying to God right now that this E.K. Willey is with us for many years, because if he is, methinks we're all in for a big surprise.

              5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-02-24

I think the book is excellent for anyone interested in personal fitness, regardless of whether or not they have joined or will join the marine corp. The stretches, explanations, and workouts seem to be carefully reviewed by professional physiologists and excercise scientists, but I dont know if that is really the case. the nutritional information is solid. It gives insights into boot camp and the marines life.

5 out of 5 stars Solid workout book........2006-01-31

I liked this book. To complement what other reviewers wrote, the book has actual day by day schedule of Marine boot camp pt exersices. It highlights the difference between OCS at Quantico and Parris Island/San Diego recruit training. In addition to daily 16 it has workout schemes for different time schedules. The photos were useful, as many would concentrate on a particular machine or exersice and show it from various viewpoints.

              4 out of 5 stars It's got some uses.......2006-01-13

The 16-day workout plan and the exercise tutorials are good. A lot of the book has no use to the average home user. Unless you have access to a military training ground. It does highlight some of the stuff you will do in boot camp.

              5 out of 5 stars I wish i looked like that.......2004-12-22

But im only 14 so i havent fully developed yet, so i have hope that with this i will not stunt my growth and still get tough muscles. I also lift weights so if i update this , i might be wrong...

1 out of 5 stars a very thin and generalized guide to USMC fitness.......2004-09-26

I was really expecting to get more out of this book. First of all, I find the Daily 16 to be an excellent workout. I had visible results after the first few days. The rest of the book, however, is too thin.

Outside the Daily 16, the book really was not helpful. It has sections on recruit training and on OCS, but they are mostly photographs with little information. Most pages have a giant photograph and only one paragraph of text. The recruit and OCS sections merely focus on certain points of training and do not give a comprehensive overview that you would expect out of a full-size book. The writing style is also juvenile and simplistic, almost on a child's level. In summary, the boot camp and OCS sections (more than half of the book) are nothing new to anyone who has perused the official USMC website.

The nutrition section was a major disappointment. All it does is provide basic nutritional information that anyone who took Health in high school already knows. The advice is very general, with obvious points such as "drink a lot of water" and "not all fats are bad" being common. Some example meals and diet advice that is not common knowledge would have made this section worth including. As is, it's a half-hearted attempt to fill pages.

The title of this book is "The Marine Corps Workout." Of its 200-plus pages, only about 80 pages (the majority of which are oversized photos) are dedicated to the workout itself. The sections on recruit and officer training do not count, because no attempt is made in those sections to show the reader how to do those exercises. They are merely pictures of recruits in training for entertainment's sake. The rest of the book is just filler to make it worth selling for ten bucks.

I think most of the people who rate this book highly are rating it merely on the basis of the Daily 16. I give the workout itself five stars, but the Daily 16 routine is freely accessible on the Internet and not worth buying a book for. Just google "daily 16" and see what I mean. Outside of the workout, this is the kind of book you'd pick up off the library shelf, flip through for about 15 seconds, and put back. You do not need to buy this disappointing book.

4 out of 5 stars Got to have it!.......2003-08-20

I bought this cookbook when we visited Edisto Island last Thanksgiving. I was using it one weekend when my daughter-in-law was visiting, and she started looking through it. She wanted to copy some of the recipes, but I loaned it to her instead. She enjoyed using it so much, I didn't have the heart to take it back, so now I'm getting another for myself. Lots of wonderful, good southern cookin' recipes. Ya gotta have it!
