Book Description

The enigmatic science of military intelligence is examined in this personal record, written by Brig.Gen. Oscar W. Koch, who served during World War II as chief of intelligence for General George S. Patton, Jr., one of the most colorful military leaders in American history. General Koch traces the growth and development of the infant science through detailed accounts of the intelligence role in some of the most celebrated battles of the war, and through his personal remembrances of Patton and his relationships with members of his intelligence staff. His story moves from the African campaign through Sicily, into France on D-Day and on to the Battle of the Bulge, pointing out how the work of the intelligence staff made the differences in the final reckoning. General Koch's book is more than a historical study, however. It is the exciting story of the operations behind the cloak and dagger illusions., 6" x 9"

5 out of 5 stars Patton's Effectiveness.......2006-01-05

G-2, Intelligence for Patton is an excellent look at a major factor in General Patton's legendary effectiveness as a military commander. General, then Colonel, Koch had a rare talant for gathering critical information, and Patton was wise enough to depend completely on his council.
The author, Robert Hays, in collaboration with General Koch, has written an interesting, comprehensive and important addition to WW2 literature. This book has, understandably, been required reading for any number of intelligence agency members, both here and abroad. I highly recommend this book to any WW2 buff and consider it essential for anyone interested in Patton.

5 out of 5 stars Must reading .......2005-11-19

Military historians universally acknowledge that Oscar Koch was the best intelligence brain of World War II. He was a major reason for Patton's brilliance as a commander, because Patton never made a move without consulting him. This highly readable book offers important insights into Koch's thinking and, perhaps more important, his personal relationship with Patton. It is a "must read" for anyone interested in Patton, military intelligence, or World War II in general. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, not bad at all.......2001-08-31

I found that this book was a bit to thin on details, but that it provided an excellent insite into World War Two battlefield intelligence planning. Certainly this is not a book for everyone, but for those in the field of intelligence (military or not), this is a good read.

2 out of 5 stars The Crucial Element.......2001-04-03

BG Koch's slim volume reveals the nuts and bolts of the day to day intelligence grind that led to many of Patton's key victories. In down to earth prose Koch explains how the intelligence section went about its job behind the scenes ensuring operational success for Patton's various WWII commands. This volume helps make clear that many of Patton's accomplishments can be attributed to his understanding of how to exercise his staff at its full potential. While perhaps somewhat dry for the general reader this work is particularly recommended for those interested in historical analysis of the military staff as well as the evolution of combat intelligence organizations and methods. It is also useful to Patton students for its insights into "Old Blood and Guts'" genius of command.

This is a must have for thoes who are interested in the final days of Siggy and how his life and mind deteriated towards the end.

4 out of 5 stars read the fine print...........2001-12-25

This "Diary" is actually a collection of scribblings found on Freud's desk after he died. The Diary itself sticks to the last ten years of Freud's life and consists of single phrases: "Doctor's Appointment"; "Editorial Committee Meeting," etc. which are then explained at length.

Given that, this is an interesting compilation sprinkled with intriguing images and photographs. I'd rate it a 5 if it weren't for the poor advertising.

5 out of 5 stars The life of Freud written by his own hands.......2001-01-25

The diary of Sigmund Freud is a great opportunity to learn more about the everyday life of the father of psychoanalysis written by his own hands. You get to know the man behind the genius. In fact, day after day Freud described his activities, big and little challenges and above all his terrible disease that affected him during his last years. It is a book packed with historical pictures that you are not likely to find anywhere else. I think people who like biographies can really appreciate this work as Freud took notes of what seemed important and very shortly described the events. Thanks to the Freud Museums curators each little note is well explained to give readers the opportunity to build up Freud's everyday life during his last ten year of his life. The book is also a rich source of historical information.

      Book Description

Kept by a Viennese schoolgirl from the ages of 11 to 14, this authentic diary first appeared in 1919. In a gently ironic tone, the book relates daily encounters and experiences as well as private conversations. Richly expressive, it chronicles the passage from childhood to puberty with an honesty that scandalized the anonymous author's contemporaries.

Dora asked me to-day how it was I knew all about these things, whether Hella had told me. I did not want to give Hella away, so I said quite casually: "Oh, one can read all about that in the encyclopedia." But Dora laughed and said: "You are quite on the wrong scent; you can't find a tenth of all those things in the encyclopedia, and what you do find is no good. In these matters it is absolutely no good depending on books." First of all she would not tell me any more, but after a time she told me a good deal, especially the names of certain parts, and about fertilisation, and about the microscopic baby which really comes from the husband, and not as Hella and I had thought, from the wife. And how one knows whether a woman is fruitful.

4 out of 5 stars She Touched My Heart.......2002-08-01

It's me, D. Green once again. I read this book, or in this case, this e-book, out of sheer curiosity; which is probably why youre looking at this review. This non-fiction book was like nothing I have read before...

It was written by a real girl who lived in Austria, pre-World War One Austria. As mentioned above, this diary is presented by the great Sigmund Freud. The diary starts off with a preface written by Freud in which he explains the reason why this particular diary is given to us; to follow the girl's personal development from a young girl into a young woman . That reason may sound a little strange, but keep in mind that not too long ago a lot of people thought that what Freud did was also a little strange.

Originally written in German, the translators did a good job of keeping the girl's writing style and syntax pretty close to the way it might have been . As I said, her story, Gretel's story, takes place in pre-World War One Austria, where there is still an Emperor, when America was still minding her own business, and hints of anti-Semitism where there and blatant at times but still under the old man's top hat. Besides all of those potential dormant volcano-like problems, the diary provided an interesting look into the Austrian culture of the early 1900s. As I was reading it, I could almost here the joyfully jolly like quartets and symphonies of J. Haydn playing in the background.

As I said before. the translators, I felt, did a good job of keeping the girl's writing style close to what the original probably was; which was pretty good and very engaging. The diary, written over four years, does what every diary does, in telling the reader what the writer feels and experiences. And boy does Gretel go through a lot of things and feel a lot of emotions. This description here may sound cut and dry, but that is where her diary excels to the point of excellence.

For her age she is a very good writer. From the beginning, where her story starts on the first year when she is ten, it is clear that she is quite handy with the pen; expressive and fluid, much more so then a lot of us were when we were ten. And us she gets older by the year, her descriptions become that much more expressive. Because of this, I really felt that I was apart of her conscience and one of her friends. If not that, then like an angel watching over her as she hang out with her best friend, Hella, as she and her family went an vacations in the Austrian countryside, and as she dealt with her feelings for the young men that she idolized- through the bad times and the good.

Though it was originally presented by Freud as a specimen to analyze and observe the development of a young female during the important years of personal growth, from a liberal arts perspective it is a work of art printed by the hand of a young artist.

Since this diary was written by a young girl, parents should give this book a look. Because this diary was written by a young girl from pre-World War One, students of culture and history should give this book a reading. On account of the fact that this diary was written by a young girl, who goes through the trials of life, students of life should take notice to this book. Heck, anyone whom has the opportunity to look at it, should do so...

On a quick note this book can be downloaded for no exchange of money (free) at the Project Gutenberg E-text website. I would like to give the website address but this one won't let me, so please highlight and use Yahoo.

Gretel's story is a very good one, rich in expression and emotionally moving, especially the ending. GOOD READING

The biggest fear about cancer, is the unknown. I attended a Q & A session at my college with the doctors and author of this book. These people are passionate about the subject matter. I bought this book for my mother-in-law, who is newly diagnosed with breast cancer after looking at it. She loved it, and her husband read it too. It provides real information that you need to know to know about cancer and treatment of cancer. It demystifies, explains things, and is a very reliable source of information. I think this is the first book that people should read if they or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer.

I read this book the night before my sister's first visit to her oncologist for treatment of lymphoma. Then I gave it to her.

It helps to make the incomprehensible a little easier to understand. The day of my sister's last radiation visit, she gave it to a mother of a 16-year-old brain cancer patient. She urged her to pass it on when she was finished with it.

I recently bought another copy of Chemo and Radiation for Dummies through Amazon for a friend whose daughter has ovarian cancer. She and her family were so appreciative.

I wish I had ordered this book prior to beginning my radiation treatment. This book, while repetitive in areas, leaves no stone unturned. Prepares you for the "worst" and gives great tips. Especially informative with the Port IV and other chemo/radiation nuaces. You can never go wrong with the Dummie Series of books! :)

                  5 out of 5 stars A big help after a scary diagnosis.......2006-11-07

Chemotherapy and Radiation for Dummies was the first resource I turned to after getting my cancer diagnosis, and it helped me quell the fear and begin to understand what was ahead of me. The book is well-organized so that you can pick and choose the chapters you need when you need them. As a breast cancer survivor, Patricia Corrigan writes with authority, compassion, and humor. The book told me what I needed to know about the chemo drugs I'd be taking and their side effects along with very practical information such as how to take care of my teeth during treatment. I continue to refer back to it when a new issue arises. I've recommended it to other patients and they've found it helpful, too.

This book is wonderful for those going through the challenges of chemotherapy and/or radiation. I purchased it for my mom----who is now in the middle of this experience herself. Wish I would have known about it months ago! My mom loves that it is written by two oncologists---for the medical info---and by an author (Patricia Corrigan)--who has personal experience with chemo and radiation herself. Mom also loves that it has an index to look up particular topics when needed. She later told me a couple tips about chemo that she learned from a Pat Corrigan. I thought she was talking about some friend of hers, but found out she was talking about the author---Patricia Corrigan---quoting from her book!! As if she was her close friend!! She was able to laugh about things that Patricia mentioned (the "fuzzy" thinking for one thing---that goes away after chemo is over!) Patricia's sense of humor and encouragement are really appreciated by my mom and I. What a gift this book is!

                  Book Description

There are more than the ceremonial four questions when it comes to the Passover Seder:

Author Zell Schulman puts your mind at ease with Let My People Eat! the first Passover Seder cookbook that not only takes you step-by-step through the Seder, but also features six Seder menus to suit your religious background, your diet, your budget, and your time. Maybe your husband is Jewish and you're not, and you don't know where to begin. Or perhaps you've recently decided to become more involved in the Jewish holidays and traditions and want to make this Seder special. Maybe some of your guests are vegetarian or watching their weight. You'll find the answers to all of your questions as well as delicious recipes in Let My People Eat! Zell takes you by the hand to help you plan your first Seder with lists, explanations, and sources for the ceremonial objects for the Seder, as well as necessities for the Passover pantry. She tells you the many ways you can prepare the Seder Plate and set your Seder table, including recipes and symbolic meanings for the traditional ceremonial foods. She even has a chapter on kosher wines and food pairings. Let My People Eat! really does make Passover Seders simple. Zell Schulman is the author of two books, a food editor and columnist for The American Israelite, and a columnist for The National Jewish Post & Opinion. She has been on several tv cooking segments throughout the country.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-03-30

I checked this book out of the library last year and again this year. It is such a great book. I had to buy it this year so I could have my own copy.

Like the other posters said, it is just beautiful.... and very easy!

                  5 out of 5 stars Passover help.......2002-03-18

This book has everything you need to make your sedar a success, from the basics to the more complicated. There is no pictures in the book of the items. I noticed some of the items need to be spiced up to taste, other wise there bland. For new or not so new jews, this book will be helpful in getting through the 8 breadless days.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Gefilte Fish.......2001-03-27

Zell Schulman should be commended for this fabulous Passover cookbook. With a beautiful layout, charming line illustrations (and a few color photographs), and clear text, she makes the idea of tackling a seder seem absolutely doable. Of particular note are the many "menus" she suggests, detailing recipes for multi-course meals. She has different suggestions for Ashkenazic, Sephardic, "off the shelf" (utilizing available kosher for passover products), vegetarian, healthful (low in fat but high in flavor), and an ecumenical potluck (acknowledging the fact that many other religious groups choose to observe the holiday that was the cause of the Last Supper of Jesus and his apostles). The ecumenical potluck has kosher suggestions but all the other menus are described in a kosher format (meat, pareve or dairy).

Since my husband and I are vegetarian, I was looking for something beyond the more "hippie" resources available for Jewish vegetarian cooking and this book has more than exceeded my expectations. (A note to others thinking of preparing some of the vegetarian dishes: Schulman does include chicken bouillon granules in some of her vegetarian recipes which would render the food NOT vegetarian by the majority of the veggie world - just use powdered vegetable soup granules instead.) She also has an entire extra chapter of other passover recipes so you can switch or substitute to your heart's content.

I think this volume would be especially appreciated by the first-time Seder host/hostess as Schulman gives you a diagram of what your seder table should look like, the various seder plate items and their meaning, and an excellent reference for kosher wines and liquors (I would also recommend kosher.org as an additional resource). This beautiful holiday will certainly be enhanced by anyone choosing to read and implement the suggestions of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about the Seder!.......2007-08-23

Excerpted from The Orange County Register
                  April 10, 2003
by Judy Bart Kancigor, author of Cooking Jewish: 532 Great Recipes from the Rabinowitz Family

Some good things deserve repeating. Zell Schulman's exhaustive Passover
guide, "Let My People Eat," is now in paperback, renamed "Passover Seders
Made Simple" (Wiley). It contains everything you ever wanted to know
or thought to ask about the Seder, the traditional meal that commemorates the deliverance of the Jews from slavery in Egypt.

Calling herself an "ecumenical Jewess" - "I'm a Reform Jew with an
Orthodox heart and a Conservative way of life," she said - Schulman offers
lists for everything from pantry supplies to prohibited foods to Passover
substitutions. She explains the significance of ceremonial items, gives
shopping resources, and offers six Seder menus as well as additional recipes for the eight-day celebration.

Even the novice need not be intimidated under Grandma Zell's encouraging
tutelage. "Don't push the panic button," she advised.

The recipes are keepers: Passover Pizza with a zucchini crust, Shiitake
Mushroom-Bell Pepper Matzo Kugel, Roast Lamb with Garlic Rosemary Sauce,
Chocolate Mousse Tort. All are delivered in her breezy style that reveals her upbeat outlook. "Life is a gift," Schulman told me. "You open the package, and you deal with it."

This carrot salad makes a delicious starter. "It's the best appetizer that you can use for the rest of the year too," she said.

ALLEGRIA COHEN'S CHIZU SALADA (CARROT SALAD)
                  2 lbs. peeled baby carrots
                  2 tsp. ground cumin
                  1/2 tsp. paprika
                  1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. dried red pepper flakes or ground red pepper
                  juice of 1 large lemon
                  2 TBS. olive oil
                  chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Place the carrots in a medium saucepan. Cover with cold water and cook over
medium heat until the tip of a knife can pierce them, about 15 minutes. Do
not overcook. Drain and let cool. In a small bowl, mix cumin, paprika, salt, red pepper flakes, lemon juice and olive oil together. Add this to the cooked carrots and gently coat them. Let cool for 20 minutes. Garnish with the parsley. These may be prepared up to 1 week before the Seder. Serve at room temperature. Makes 8 servings.

                  5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2004-05-08

I used this book to help me set the table as well as for the recipes inside. I couldn't have had my Seder without it.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of menus and ideas for Passover........2003-11-12

I had this book for a year or two before I really tried out the recipes one year. They are excellent!

Zell Shulman organizes her book into numerous Pesach menus, such as Ashkenazic, Sephardic, Health-Conscious, Easy to Prepare, and Ecumenical Potluck. There are grocery lists and timelines accompanying each menu and they really help to streamline the task of pulling together a Seder meal.

Even though the layout and organization was impressive, I wasn't sure I would find the recipes to be as good as promised. When I served the Sephardic menu, it was really good! Everyone devoured the food and it felt wonderful to present such a lavish meal that still allowed me to enjoy the holiday and my friends and family in a relaxed fashion.

One other plus: the author includes many additional recipes that help round out the eight day holiday. My reason for four stars: her "Easy to Prepare" seder scares me a little, although in fairness I haven't tried the recipes.
