Book Description

They invented slums. They invented child labor. They put Saddam Hussein in power. They burned Joan of Arc at the stake, and they enslaved the globe to get their tea fix. We're talking about England, of course, and the terrible evils they've set loose on the world. In The Evil Empire, American author Steven Grasse documents the 101 worst atrocities of Mother England everything from foxhunting to the invention of the concentration camp. With an irreverent mix of historical facts, smart commentary, and red-blooded American arrogance, Grasse offers a devastating critique of the country that gave us the machine gun, factory labor, and the metric system. Publishing just in time for the Queen's birthday (April 21), The Evil Empire is essential reading for true-blue Americans and others oppressed by the English throughout history.

I was very entertained by this book. My wife is British and also enjoyed it. Not that either one of us have anything at all against the country or the people, we just took it with a grain of salt and laughed. We both know it's not all true but does bring up some good points. I just wish the author would be a good enough sport to write an equivalent about the US, which also has a "not so peachy" history. I think it's humans in general that are flawed by nature, not a specific group of them. Ooooh! do Canada!

Yes, this is a polemic. Not "objective history".

I recently saw a book here in the bookstore called 100 Ways America is Ruining the World. There seem to be a spate of these books. Some are kind of amusing. By taking an extreme viewpoint, the author has engaged in a fun, interesting polemic against England in history. It is interesting that this book is against "England", and not "Britain", so I assume, the Scots and Welsh, and of course the Irish can get in on the "Pom-bashing".

The book is basically an attack on what Britain has done historically, all juxtaposed with funny cartoons.

Aside from the obvious things like driving on the left side of the road and eating baked beans for breakfast, I would like to see the following put into the Second Edition:

- The Irish Holocaust (1840s) in which the English basically tried to ethnically cleanse Ireland of Irish people. Leading to the 'Potato Famine'.

- Amritsar, in which a British army unit fired indescriminately into a crowd of unarmed protesters in India (also 1800s). The modern version of this is the "Paras" firing into unarmed crowds in Northern Ireland in 1972 ("Bloody Sunday").

- The fact that the British MI5 and MI6 have been able to monitor all domestic activities, and then arrest suspects (the IRA, etc.) and detain them without real charges, and even use "coercion" (i.e. torture) against them. This is exactly the kind of thing the Brits accuse the U.S. and Bush of doing. The only thing is, the Brits have been doing this for 40 years.

- Moral crusades: the campaign against fox hunting comes to mind. Animal activists have basically rid England of fox hunting. Result: the population of foxes in Britain has fallen drastically. Good job, animal rights people ! (someone once made the comment that an Englishman is someone who likes animals more than people). Add into the mix various environmental and 'animal rights' fanatics, who threaten people working in the biotech sector (in which animal testing is required sometimes to find cures for human disease and thus save lives). Some of them are just terrorists, really. Another example: the current campaign to wipe out private gun ownership in Britain. Result ?: gun crime is soaring in Britain.

- The entire "Looney Left". Stalinistic union bosses. MPs who travel to Iraq and smooch with Saddam, etc. BBC reporters covering Hezbollah (Iranian terrorist organization) and are wild with enthusiasm, as if it were their first pop music concert, etc. Fanatical leftwing anti-Semitism. Blaming the U.S. and Israel for all the world's ills.

- The "Beeb". The BBC is paid for by the taxpayer, and, I have mentioned, is basically a media source for the most hysterical anti-U.S. and anti-Israel viewpoints. All paid for by the British taxpayer. The entire farce about the BBC being "impartial". Total joke.

- "Lad Culture": the English gave us the modern cultural phenomenon of grown men drinking themselves to oblivion and then acting like 13-year olds. This is known as being a "lad". Maxim magazine, FHM, etc. all support this wonderful contribution to world culture.

- Drinking to oblivion. Most cultures drink. The modern English have perfected drinking at dangerous levels, and until the liver basically fails. Liver failure and cirrhosis are now not totally uncommon even in teenagers in Britain. Way to pace yourself, guys. The 11-o'clock "closing time" is alternately cited as the cause, or the solution to this.

- Hooliganism and "anti-social behavior". Seems to be an epidemic in Jolly Olde Englande. I read a letter recently to the "Economist" in which a guy from New York said that in New York, people go out to bars to have a good time. In London, he noticed a type of "seething violence" just under the surface, and every "lad" seemed to want to fight.

- "Londonistan": the British taxpayer basically pays for mosques and "community centers" for the "communities". Sometimes, this basically means, financially supporting Islamofascist terrorism, either directly, or indirectly. All the while, London has become a center for terrorism and jihad. The Americans, French and other nations complain. The English pat themselves on the back for being so morally "tolerant" and superior. This is extremely annoying (not to mention, dangerous). Note: This alone is reason to say that the English are ruining the world.

- Cricket (the game)
- Warm beer
-

"The Queen of England is the richest woman in the world. What exactly does she DO again ?"
- Kevin Klein, in "A Fish Called Wanda".

Do the people who have given this book a bad review realize that it is not an attempt at serious history? I found this book in the HUMOR section. The only humor that English people seem to understand is that which has to do with sex, toilets and Irish people. Speaking of Irish, the Elizabethan and later genocides are not included in this book. This is a fun book, buy it and have a laugh. Caution, there is some truth to be found here.

1 out of 5 stars What a sad little man he is..........2007-08-22

If you want to read any history or facts please don't bother with this rubbish.

It's obviously just been thrown together by some American pea-brain after he has trawled the internet for nonsense from anti-English "racists".

I fear that he has an inferiority complex. Why is he so rabbidly anti-English otherwise? Please don't lecture to us English, you certainly don't hold the moral highground!

Most of what he rants about in this book just doesn't stand up to historic criticism.

I suggest you buy a proper history book that gives both sides to history and throw this rubbish in the bin!

It's a pleasant binding, from a good independent imprint, but thank god my copy was given to me for free. Here's the author's description of himself from the back cover:

"Steven A. Grasse is a man of many talents. He is the founder and CEO of a large independent ad agency, owns several successful clothing and liquor brands, and has written and directed many independent films. This is his first book."

After that, the author can't help but embarrass himself. The three-color illustrations are delightful, and convey the desired piquancy the text simply isn't capable of. Sure, his stories are well-tread and full of half-truths, but that's the aura he's chosen. The problem is, when you call yourself a rebel, and push bland anecdotes as rebellious ideas, you've pretty much canceled yourself out. As an object, the book is pretty but vacant, and that seems to be exactly what the author aspires to.

This book by Hal-Leonard publishing is almost 100% accurate, here's how I know.

Recently I have developed an odd hobby, I've become a Morello-phile. I have spared no expense to try to collect every possible clue to helping me understand Morello's playing. I have collected live concert video footage, both commercial and bootleg, as well as bootleg audio recordings. I own the Shinko-Music transcription of this album, it contains many errors. I have also sought to collect every published interview and lesson with Morello. Of particular value is the lesson Morello gave in the June 1996 issue of Guitar World. Morello wrote a few lessons in Guitar World durring 2000, he also gave lessons in issues #81 and #113 of Total Guitar magazine. I own many other Morello interviews and articles.

If you study the video footage, interviews, and lessons you will see that the transcriptions by Hal-Leonard are 100% correct. I can only conclude that the transcribers used many of the sources listed above when transcribing.

    Book Description

This is the chilling chronicle of John Gilligan, Ireland's most ruthless godfather. Gilligan thought himself untouchable and above the law-until his gang crossed the line by executing crime reporter Veronica Guerin. The full measure of Gilligan's criminal activities is revealed through the retelling of his many petty crimes, his role in a new generation of thieves specializing in robbing warehouses and factories, his formation of a multimillion-dollar drug empire, and his rule over one of the most dangerous criminal organizations to emerge from the underworld. Also examined is the unprecedented effect Guerin's murder had on Irish society and how it led to the establishment of tighter controls over gang crime and, in particular, the Criminal Assets Bureau and the Witness Protection Program, which eventually led to the collapse of the Gilligan empire. Included are previously unpublished facts about the Gilligan crime organization and the murder.

    Book Description

Former CBS correspondent Richard Threlkeld, with his wife, Betsy Aaron, spent almost three years reporting from Moscow, going beyond the headlines to discover the drama of daily life at a moment of extraordinary change in one of the most fascinating parts of the world. In a series of colorful vignettes, you'll be whisked from the crime-ridden Wild, Wild East of Siberia to the glitzy casinos of Moscow and the world of Russia's new super-rich. You'll see what life is like in the rubble of Russia's breakaway province of Chechnya, whose people have sacrificed everything for independence. You'll meet the Kalish folk in the mountains of Azerbaijan, some of whom are more than 120 years old, and the Nenets of the Arctic, who still follow the reindeer herds in much the same fashion as America's Sioux and Cheyene followed the buffalo two centuries ago. You'll find yourself in the most fascinating place of all: behind the walls of the Kremlin the waning years of Boris Yeltsin's regime. As "Tsar Boris" plays musical chairs with his ministers, you'll be an eyewitness to the palace intrigues of Russia's new Rasputin, Boris Berezovsky, and his ally, Yeltin's ambitious and willful daughter, Tatyana. And you'll be introduced to the most interesting characters of all, the long-suffering, everyday citizens of this sprawling land; The Kuzbass coal minters who line up for cold cuts instead of a paycheck; the country schoolmarm who frets because her students are shivering and hungry; the voter in Zaaraisk who takes his little son with him into the voting booth to show him democracy at work, "so he'll know all about it when he grows up!" Threlkeld has drawn an engaging and tragicomic portrait of the West's old enemy. And he has made a case for making better friends with the former Evil Empire. As he writes, "At heart, this is a valentine!"

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Book.......2007-04-12

Richard Threlkeld's writing skills are outstanding, showing what an asset he was to CBS before he retired. The book is a book about the Russian people, how they are living, how they are dealing with the government and the changes in their country. Richard writes about living in Moscow, visiting villages where there were many people over 100 years old, the plight of the miners, and even ventures out to Cuba where he went to cover the Pope's visit. Although life in Russia at this time has many difficulties, Richard speaks of a people who are survivors, but want things to improve without the bloodshed that has accompanied changes in the past. The book was written about Richard's life there in the late 1990s, and I couldn't help but want to know about life there in the present and have hopes that these people will indeed develop a society where there is good medical care, education and employment opportunities.

5 out of 5 stars A Look Over the Shoulder.......2001-09-16

The word "former" appears many times in Threlkeld's book, but don't let that fool you. This book is as timely as any writen on Russian Republic. The author is smart and sensitive and what he saw in the late 1990's is indispensable to an understanding of Russia today. The Moscow Christmas described in chapter four, for example, is a brilliant account of a people who are revisiting old traditions after 70 years of Communist rule. The Russians are paying a terrible price for their mistakes, but one can see how these stoic and determined people will bring about the birth of a new Nation from the wreckage of the Soviet Union.

5 out of 5 stars Dispatches from the Former Evil Empire.......2001-05-31

Richard Threlkeld spent 25 years as a foreign correspondent, covering war and peace, triumph and tragedy for CBS and ABC. He was CBS's Man in Moscow from 1996 to 1999. His 43 "dispatches" paint a vivid picture of life and work in the former Soviet Union. He combines history, journalism and the best kind of travelogue in a memoir that entertains and educates. Threlkeld listens to the heartbeat of the nascent Russian democracy. He describes the voters in the old town of Zaraisk who bring their children to the polls, so they'll learn to vote when they grow up. His humor rivals P.J. O'Rourke's as he reads us the traffic signs in Moscow ("No turns between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. except for vehicles that are not trucks") and takes us to a restored hotel in Vladivostok ("There's a casino on the thrid floor but no drawers or closets in the rooms.") Whether he is reporting on the tax-free investments of the Russian Orthodox Church or the habits of Azerbaijani Talish centenarians, Threlkeld delivers the good news and the bad, the heartbreak and the hope of this enormous and amazing new Russia. His journalism is insightful, trustworthy and eminently readable.

        Book Description

David Foglesong tells the fascinating story of American efforts to liberate and remake Russia since the 1880s. He analyzes the involvement of journalists, political activists, propagandists, missionaries, diplomats, engineers, and others in this grand crusade, paying special attention to the influence of religious beliefs on Americans’ sense of duty to emancipate, convert, or reform Russia. He discusses the impact of popular debates about changing Russia on how Americans felt about the United States, showing how the belief that Russia was being remade in America's image reaffirmed faith in America's special virtue and historic mission and that opposition to the spread of American influence in Russia was characterized as evil from the late nineteenth century. While the main focus is on American thinking and action, the book also discusses the responses of Russian and Soviet governments, Russian Orthodox priests, and ordinary Russians to American propaganda campaigns, missionary work, and popular culture.

          Book Description

The Apocalypse depicts New Jerusalem as an alternative to Babylon and calls on the audience to make a choice between the two cities. The audience must "come out" of Babylon in order to "enter" into New Jerusalem.

One way in which the author structures the rhetorical contrast between the cities is to invoke an ethical "two-women" topos that was well known in the ancient world both from the Jewish wisdom tradition (Proverbs 1-9) and from the story of Heracles's choice (Xenephon's Memoribilia). The topos of the "two women" provided a franework for exhortation between two alternatives -- the "evil woman" who must be resisted, and the "good woman" whom the audience should follow.

Chapter 2 surveys the "two-women" topos and its use by a variety of ancient authors. Chapter 3 analyzes the prostitute of Rev. 17:1-4 as a stereotypical "evil woman" and the portrayal of Babylon as "evil woman" and evil empire. Chapter 4 focuses on the use of the "city lament" genre in various texts and Revelation 18's taunting of Babylon via laments and dirges. A final chapter studies New Jersualem as the "good woman" and as an alternative political economy to Rome.

Barbara R. Rossing is Assistant Professor of New Testament at Lutheran School of Theology, Chicago.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good woman versus bad woman.......2000-09-09

Rossing develops the theme that the whore of Babylon and the bride of Revelation represent two cites. The whore represents evil Babylon (the i.e.Roman empire), while the bride represents the New Jerusalem.

She traces the literary imagery of Revelation to the Old Testament and Greek and Roman wisdom traditions. In the wisdom tradition, the two woman motif (topos) invites the reader/hearer to choose between the good woman of wisdom and the bad woman of licentiousness. The reader of Revelation is also given a choice - choose the evil woman or choose the good woman.

This book does a very good job at discussing the good woman/bad woman theme of Revelation.

After reading this book, I definately choose New Jerusalem. down with the evil emprire of greed and injustice!

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most controversial issues of spirituality.......2002-01-09

A Rebel To His Last Breath provides the first biography of one Joseph McCabe, a former Catholic priest who became a champion of free thought and rationalism in the first half of the 20th century. Why chart the life of a man largely forgotten today? Because he tackled some of the most controversial issues of spirituality and social issues of modern times, and his efforts and writings continue to influence.

I was hungry for the info in this book! My daughter celebrates her first birthday next month and I was at a loss about what's next after nursing. You'll heartily appreciate all the nitty-gritty scientific data in these pages, but you're equally likely to indulge in the simple recipe suggestions and feel good doing it!

The Classic Book on Southern Cooking

First published in 1942, Cross Creek Cookery was compiled by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings at the request of readers who wanted to recreate the luscious meals described in Cross Creek -- her famous memoir of life in a Florida hamlet.

Lovers of old-fashioned, down-home cooking will treasure the recipes for Grits, Hush-Puppies, Florida Fried Fish, Orange Fluff, and Utterly Deadly Southern Pecan Pie. For more adventuresome palates, there are such unusual dishes as Minorcan Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Alligator-Tail Steak, Mayhaw Jelly, and Chef Huston's Cream of Peanut Soup.

Spiced with delightful anecdotes and lore, Cross Creek Cookery guides the reader through the rich culinary heritage of the deep tidal South with a loving regard for the rituals of cooking and eating. Anyone who longs for food -- and writing -- that warms the heart will find ample portions of both in this classic cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Rawlings Humor and Recipes.......2005-08-24

A great read... both for the recipes and for a large dose of Marjorie Rawlings' folksy humor. Loved it from cover to cover.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than a cookbook.......2005-08-23

A big fan of MKR, I stumbled over this little book at a booksale several years ago----it's paperback and coming apart from use, and the pure pleasure of reading Ms. Rawlings' commentary and recollections of living at Cross Creek. Her biscuit and hoe-cake recipes are worth the price, as they evoked memories of my grandmothers kitchen where it wasn't a meal without fresh, hot bread.
              Highly recommended---even if you're not a cook!

5 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Rawlings Fan, Cook or Not!.......2000-12-11

I've been a fan of Rawlings since I first read her as a teenager. Reading her biography many years ago, I learned of her pride in her cooking. I didn't even know she'd issued a cookbook until I came across this edition!

Upon reading the book I was immediately reminded of the "Alice B. Toklas" cookbook. The structure and literary emphasis are much the same. Thus, for the same reason, it's a joy to read even if one doesn't cook!

However, like "Toklas", the recipes are also a treasure. Many of the recipes contain ingredients too exotic for the average cook, but many more are easily prepared. This can also be a pleasurable and valuable resource for those, like me, who enjoy reading and preparing recipes from old cookbooks. Our eating styles have changed enormously in the nearly sixty years since Rawlings wrote this book.

If you are a fan of Rawlings, buy the book whether you ever plan to cook any of its recipes. Its reasonable cost is a further bonus!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic recipes of Southern cooking.......1999-05-09

As the other reviewer has mentioned, this is a collection of recipes, filled with anecdotes of central Florida life in the 1930s and 1940s. The recipes are fantastic and one wants to try all of them (although it may be difficult to prepare alligator-tail steak). And, what a pleasure it is to read a cookbook written by an accomplished author. You just keep picking it up.

5 out of 5 stars MKR "took more pride in her cooking than in her writing".......1997-08-01

It is evident from her cookbook that Marjorie tasted of nearly everything and learned to make delicious dishes out of some very odd things: Poke Weed (on toast), Pot Roast of Bear, Smother-Fried Squirrel, Gopher Stew, Coot Surprise, Jugged Rabbit, a host of Pilaus, and an infamous blackbird pie. Of course this book is not simply a culinary freak-show. There are dozens of recipes for desserts, seafood, meats-found-at-the-A&P, jams, and soups, featuring ingredients of which we are all familiar and unafraid. She was proud to share them and claimed each recipe was nothing short of first-rate. Included among these is her piece de resistance, Crab A La Newburg, and the best Strawberry Shortcake ever. Accompanied by anecdotes of Florida rural living in the 1930s and 1940s, this book is a delight and an excursion from a mundane kitchen
