Book Description
As the government of South Vietnam was collapsing and communist troops were closing in, American diplomat Francis Terry McNamara led more than 300 Americans, Vietnamese, and Filipinos down a tributary of the Mekong River to safety. This is his dramatic true account of leadership, courage, and commitment.
Customer Reviews:
Not Bad.......2006-08-14
This book peaked my curiosity because my brother was one of the marines stationed at this particular embassy in Vietnam. he's only mentioned in it twice by name but it was great learning about what the had to do to get out. Now my brother had never talked about it but recently mentioned it (briefly) at a family dinner and I did my own research. He did end up with a 22 year career and retired as a sgt major. some of the ook is really technical because its told by the ambassador but its a decent read.
A risky escape........2002-12-31
This is a detailed account of the U.S. consul's last months in Can Tho, South Vietnam and his risky escape by boat on the Mekong River in April 1975. As the collapse of Saigon was nearing and as the airlift of Americans and third country nationals from Can Tho never materialized, McNamara himself took charge of guiding more than 300 people to safety on military barges along the Mekong River. He was recognized for his bravery and given a medal in 1977.
The book was also a tribute to General Nguyen Khoa Nam, the IV Corps South Vietnamese commander who refused to be evacuated and remained at his post until the last minute. McNamara had known him for over a year as a brave and dedicated officer and a man of honor. General Nam and his deputy General Hung killed themselves instead of surrendering to the enemy a few days later.
This is an interesting perspective of an American's last weeks in South Vietnam, his dealings with the Americans, the Vietnamese, and the CIA.
A riveting book about a true story--reads like a movie!.......1999-06-14
During every great event there occurs little-known tales of heroism and sacrifice; Ambasador McNamara's book tells the story on one of them. The evacuation of the handful of American civilians and Marines of the U.S. Consulate General in Can Tho, along with their South Vietnamese employees and families, reads like a movie, and is all the more exciting for being true. Their story of sacrifice, heroism, betrayal, and tragedy was lost in the greater story of the simultaneous evacuation of Saigon, but one with a historical bent will see in McNamara's tale a reflection of Xenephon's Persian expedition. Don't start reading this one before bedtime, or you'll be up all night to finish it!
Positive and uplifting........1997-11-20
In a time of uncertainty, danger and demoralization, this is a story that shows that even in the midst of the end of the Vietnam war our few remaining Americans cared deeply about the people that they had supported. A story of heroism generally not recognized and long overdue in the telling.

Book Description
This biography of a first-century
C.E. holy man has become one of the most widely discussed literary works of later antiquity. With an engaging style, Philostratus portrays a charismatic teacher and religious reformer from Tyana in Cappadocia (modern central Turkey) who travels across the known world, from the Atlantic to the Ganges. His miracles, which include extraordinary cures and mysterious disappearances, together with his apparent triumph over death, caused pagans to make Apollonius a rival to Jesus of Nazareth.
In a new two-volume Loeb Classical Library edition of Philostratus's third-century work, Christopher Jones provides a freshly edited Greek text and a stylish translation with full explanatory notes. Apollonius of Tyana is by far the longest biography that survives from antiquity. Jones in his Introduction asks how far it is history and how far fiction, and discusses its survival from Late Antiquity to modern times.
Customer Reviews:
The archetype of the Good man in the classical world.......2006-02-27
_This is the definative, unabridged translation of Philostratus' _Life of Apollonius_ for your permanent library. The Jones translation was made from the Teuber text of C.L. Kayser.
_Philostratus completed this work in C.E. 220, while the historical Apollonius was generally thought to have left this world around C.E. 98. Apollonius is presented as an example of the ideal spiritual and good man in the classical world. In a Roman Empire ruled increasingly by force, violence, and greed, this Apollonius would be the ideal role model. Indeed, that is what you encounter in the books, example after example of Apollonius encountering worldly and wicked men and setting them straight. It is still rather inspiring, even though you realize that this Apollonius is probably a composite character of many philosophical and religious characters of the classical world. This is not to categorically state that there was no original, Pythagorean, named Apollonius that served as the original inspiration- it is just that we do not know how much of the original is still there.
_Apollonius was to be understood as the champion of traditional "pagan" cults and philosophy against the new religion of Christianity. Apollonius is shown to be tolerant to other religions and faiths- something that the new cult, even then, was not. Perhaps his very name reflected this tolerance and defense of the traditional. This is also no doubt why he visits India during his travels, for even in those days the Vedic tradition was seen as the "root" of all religious tradition.
_In any case, the account is still quite edifying in its depiction of what was considered the archetypical example of the good, just, and tolerant man in the late classical world.

Book Description
Philostratus's colorful biography of Apollonius of Tyana, recounting the sayings and miracles of a Pythagorean sage, incidentally provoked a long-lasting debate between pagans and Christians. This volume, which completes the new Loeb Classical Library edition of the Life of Apollonius of Tyana, provides historical context for that much discussed third-century portrayal of a charismatic religious teacher.
Here is a new translation of the surviving letters of Apollonius, augmented and illuminated by recent discoveries. These letters reveal Apollonius's personality and his religious and philosophical ideas. New for this edition is a selection of ancient reports about Apollonius from authors such as St. Jerome and St. Augustine.
Philostratus's biography was quickly caught up in the religious struggles that marked the rise of Christianity. An official in Diocletian's empire named Hierocles used it as ammunition in an anti-Christian polemic, initiating a controversy that lasted well into modern times. The reply by Eusebius, the fourth-century bishop of Caesarea, was originally included in editions of the Life of Apollonius in order to serve as a spiritual antidote and to provide cover for the publishers; today it is an essential chapter in the history of Philostratus's masterpiece.

Book Description
The Burial Shroud of "The Jesus Christ" was taken from Jerusalem to Edessa, Assyria, in about 50 CE by the disciple Thaddaeus. It remained in Edessa until 944 CE, when it was taken to Constantinople on the orders of Byzantine Emperor Romanus Lecapenus. Then in 1356 CE the Shroud was moved to France, where the Holy See was headquartered at Avignon during the 1300s. Finally in 1578, the Shroud was moved to Turin, Italy, where it has remained until the present day. This "holy relic" is currently on public display at St. John The Baptist Cathedral in Torino. The image on this Burial Shroud is that of Apollonius of Tyana, the "Mystery Man" of Christianity and "True Christ"!

Customer Reviews:
A book your doctor can learn from.......2002-09-06
As a hypoglycemic, I am trying to find out what I can do to keep my blood sugar level. Dr. Murray provides the reader with more suggestions than just eating right and exercising. The addition of supplements is very helpful. He also educates on the connection between hypoglycemia and diabetes. This is important for hypolycemics to know since it is very possible for this condition to turn into diabetes.
I highly recommend Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook, by Jeraldine Saunders and Harvey M. Ross in addition to this book.
Easy to read, clear and to the point!!!!.......2001-01-31
I have low blood sugar and throughout the past few years I have read many books on the subject of sugar. In fact tonight I was reading; The Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Program. As I was reading this book I was getting frustrated at how wordy the book was and how wordy the other books had been that I had read before. The book by Michael T. Murray is clear and to the point. It's an easy read but invaluable for the information it conveys. It is definitely my favorite book and I have been recommending and purchasing it for friends and family for years.
Should be Updated with more emphasis on Fibre content !.......1999-04-03
1996 is almost light years away from all the new nutrient info available today. I have both encyclopedias that Dr. Murray has authored, & they are more recently published than this book.
Information with details, research and guidance.......1998-11-05
Murry's book gives so much information on the subjects of diabetes and hypoglycemia. It was also nice to see the two together since they do have a relation. His guidelines are very detailed and easy to understand. This book has helped me and has given me more of the information that I have been searching for. I would definitely recommend this book.
Excellent book full of hard-to-find information !!.......1998-03-17
This book provides information that I've looked for, but never found, in other books on Diabetes. It gives a wealth of info on diet, vitamins/minerals, and general nutrition for diabetics. All references are footnoted, and most advice is accompanied with detailed medical explanations. Other books on diabetes seem to give a lot of advice, without explaining how the conclusions were reached, or what pertinent research was done. Not so with this book! It has been a BIG help in finding very important information, and being a great general guide to subjects that are critical to diabetic well-being!

Fabulous Feast for Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike!.......2005-01-26
This cookbook is by and far my favorite vegetarian book. My husband is a vegetarian but he hates beans. Finding a vegetarian cookbook whose recipes aren't nearly completely beans can be a challenge.
The emphasis on fresh foods, foods in season, and hearty recipes makes this cookbook an excellent investment. Just reading it makes your mouth water! If I had to have one vegetarian cookbook in my collection, this would be it, hands down.
Excellent, nutritional recipes that are great........1999-08-18
I cherish all of the books written by this author--there is only one that I do not have. He writes clearly and the recipes are easy to assemble and to follow. Because the ingredients used are fresh, the end result is delicious and hearty. All I can say is that the monks in this monastery eat VERY WELL!!!! They have a very talented Chef who obviously loves all aspects of his work and his vocation.
Make friends with owners of this cook book.......1999-02-23
One of my friends bought this book and has allowed me to sample his cooking ... I recommend buying or associating with someone who owns and uses this book!!! The recipies are very good and healthy.
A delight for the senses and the soul.......1998-06-02
Those of us who love to cook sometimes love to just curl up with a cookbook on a quiet night and READ. this book is wonderful for these times... it is infused with a sense of calm, joy, peace, a love of nature and simple pleasures. I love how the recipes are arranged according to season, so that the ingredients and richness of the meals are in sync with changing weather and ingredients throughout the year. and reading the section about fresh herbs made me run out to the local garden center to buy basil. best of all, there's not a bad recipe in the bunch. unlike many vegetarian cooks who seem to want to smother everyhthign with cumin and miso, Brother Victor is a master of simplicity. the recipes have one or two perfectly chosen herbs to bring out natural flavors, subtly and iwth restraint. i highly recommend this book!
