Book Description
Based on the findings in recently released archive papers and letters, as well as extensive library and historical resources, Alan Axelrod offers a compelling profile of the remarkable leadership discipline of a general often called a "military CEO." In fascinating detail, Axelrod reveals that Ike was more than a great military leader; he was also a great executive who could—and did—write a reassuring letter to the mother of a solider one moment and make decisions impacting millions of lives the next.
Follow Ike's path as Supreme Commander from the invasion of North Africa to victory in Europe and learn the lessons of great leadership along the way, including:
- The nature of leadership
- Managing detail without sacrificing the “big picture”
- Ensuring follow-through to execution
- Building a team
- Converting conflict into common cause
- Getting the facts and making plans
- Mentoring, motivating, and inspiring

Great for CEOs of CEOs and those who want to improve their written communication, but so so for the rest. .......2007-07-20
I rated "Patton on Leadership" by the same author a four star with the title "Great on Patton "and" Leadership." I had expected this to be of the same good quality. Sorry that I had been a little bit disappointed. Dont know whether it's the difference of the two characters that Eisenhower is one of decision making and Patton is one of action taking, or the author had deliberately based his new book primiarily on the correspondence written by Eisenhower, or simply the author had overdone it (there are 232 lessons), I found this not interesting and over stretched. I still can remember some good leadership stories I read from "Patton on Leadership." All I can recall from this is that Eisenhower possessed very strong political skills who strived to strike the balance right and use correct tone and words all the time. Great for CEOs of CEOs and those who want to improve their written communication, but so so for the rest.

The real IKE.......2007-06-27
Stephen Ambrose has written some of the best WW@ history ever and this is no exception. Here we see the REAL general Eisenhower, the doubts along with the confidence, the heartaches along with the triumph. For a rare glimpse of the higest levels of command in the most important moment in the twentieth century, this is it.
I Like Ike.......2006-12-14
This is one of Stephen Ambrose's first efforts after working with Dwight Eisenhower on Eisenhower's personal papers (The Supreme Commander first published in 1970). It is obvious that he was still very much infatuated by Ike's persona at this point in time. As such The Supreme Commander can tell almost as much about Stephen Ambrose as it does Dwight Eisenhower. As other reviewers noted, the criticism of Eisenhower's Hurtgen Forest campaign, the army's replacement policy, and the segregated army of WWII that appears in Ambrose's later work, Citizen Soldier, is missing in The Supreme Commander. Thus one can track Ambrose's maturing as a historian with the passage of time.
Still, even this early offering by Ambrose has his unique narrative style and helps to much to explain how a newly minted brigadier general on December 7, 1941 bypasses many more senior general officers to become a five star general of the army, and the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces, Europe by June 6, 1944. There were many general officers that had a better grasp of tactics, e.g. Patton or perhaps strategy, Alexander or Bradley but none had the understanding and patience that Eisenhower had in building and maintaining coalition forces in a prolonged conflict. He gathered able officers from all nationalities and supported the combined effort not national ambitions. This often frustrated other American generals such as George Patton but it was the course to take. He often supported and backed his commanders even other were calling for the heads - again see Patton. Eisenhower knew who he needed for ultimate victory and insisted upon having their services.
Eisenhower wasn't perfect. He made mistakes such as the deployment of forces that led to the debacle at the Kasserine Pass in North Africa, and his over confidence in December 1944 that the Germans were through and could no longer launch a major offensive. However, he learned from his mistakes and attempted to profit from them. For example turning the early diaster of the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 into an opportunity in January 1945 to squash what remained of the German Wehrmacht in the West.
All in all, a good but not perfect early effort by Stephen Ambrose and an enlightening one as it shows how he develops into one America's favorite historians of 20th century events.
Ike in WWII.......2000-08-05
Ambrose edited the Eisenhower Papers project for many years and finally turned his talents on writing a military biography of Ike. The Ike opus is infinitely superior to Ambrose's earlier biography on Henry Halleck and his research and knowledge about his subject is obvious throughout.
The only "criticism" I have is that Ambrose is blatantly biased in Ike's favor and makes no bones about it. The first words in his introduction are, 'Dwight Eisenhower was a great and a good man," which is undoubtedly true, but a biographer should take more pains to disguise their own feelings. There is very little criticism of Ike in Ambrose's work, which borders on the hagiography. Perhaps a bit more of Harry Truman's invective towards Eisenhower could have infused these pages.
Still, Ambrose is a wonderful writer and his works are always fun to read and informative. This is an excellent look at Eisenhower in World War II, even if it is a completely uncritical examination.
another fine effort from Stephen Ambrose.......2000-04-05
I was not aware of the fine writing of Ambrose until I read "Citizen Soldiers" and in "Supreme Commander" he does yet another job of putting the reader right there besides Ike as he learns, commands and most importantly earns the trust of all who comes in contact with him.
Many of Ike's compatriots questions his skills as a soldier but all are certainly of his positive human skills at bonding a diverse group to attain the goal of defeating the enemy, in this Ambrose describes well. And from this experience at war time an outstanding president is groomed. I think Ambroses' "Eisenhower: A soldier and President" will have to be my next purchase.
One point I'm a bit disappointed is the fact that Ambrose does not spend much time dealing with Ike's rols in the debacle of Hurtgen Forest, the problems with Repple Depple, and the problems with the problems caused by Segragation in the Army, several of the areas that Ambrose had detailed discussions on in "Citizen Soldiers". But all in all, an excellent read.
A Brillant Overview of Eisenhower's Leadership.......2000-03-30
Stephen Ambrose skillfully tells how Eisenhower developed into one of the greatest military leaders in history. Eisenhower was able to lead the Allies to victory WWII because of his ablitiy to keep the alliance together. Eisenhower understood that the only way to achieve success was to build a consensus among differing viewpoints on how to conduct the war. He had to understand British strategies, goals, traditions, and hardships and meld them together with American objectives. He realized that the British have all ready been punished thru years of war, where as the Americans had justed entered the war and had not endured the hardships in the degree in which Britain had. Eisnehower was faced with many strong-willed military and political figures like Roosevelt, Churchill, Montgomery, Bradley, de Gaulle, and Patton, each of whom had their own views on how to conduct the war. Eisenhower was able to work with this men, which was no small feat. It is diffcult to see how another person would be able to lead such a diverse group of people.

Book Description
"In the making of Allied Force Headquarters into a truly single Allied inter-service headquarters, Eisenhower started on a task that was to continue throughout the war--and beyond. Its fulfillment was perhaps more than any other his special contribution to the practice of war." Because he did not actually command troops in battle, Eisenhower has occasionally been underestimated by military writers. The Eisenhower volume in the classic "Military Commanders" series clearly demonstrates that his organization of the Allied effort in Europe owed nothing to the practices followed in World War I and represented a decisive breakthrough in the conduct of war, particularly in coalition warfare. Ike was a military manager without equal, who also had the ability to inspire confidence and loyalty among his subordinates of all nationalities. Eisenhower is most closely associated with the military principle of "Unity of Command," and his doctrines are more relevant today than ever, in the world of coalition armies and high-tech battlefields. General Sixsmith's comprehensive description of Eisenhower's World War II actions makes for particularly interesting comparisons with the lessons forgotten in Vietnam and re-applied in the Persian Gulf.

Solid concise look at Ike the military commander.......2006-11-13
"Eisenhower: A Military Commander" by E.K.G. Sixsmith is a compact (221 pp) and informative story of the military career of Dwight D. Eisenhower through the end of the Second World War. While short in length Sixsmith's book does not lack for vital and important information and considerable insight. Sixsmith presents a fair and relatively unbiased picture of Ike as a military leader, leaving generally behind any potential nationalistic bias' he may have brought to the project given his British birth and citizenship. It is unfortunate that so many books written about Eisenhower's command have been provincial in their approach (biased either from an American or British view point). Fortunately for the reader Sixsmith presents an evenly balanced, yet critical look at Ike's command capabilities and performance. There are a number of quite good books out there dedicated to Eisenhower and his military career, many of them much longer in text, but few utilize those extra words with significantly more impact than Sixsmith's work. Take for example, Carlos D'Este's "Eisenhower: A Soldier's Life" - while it clocks in at nearly 900 pages, it provides little beyond Sixsmith's book in terms of presentation and analysis of Ike's military strengths and weaknesses, his achievements and failures. What a book like D'Este's does do is provide more insight into Eisenhower the man: how was his family history connected to his command style? How did his personal relationships influence his approach to military decisions? How did his training in the pre-war period affect his command style? These types of questions are not really addressed in Sixsmith's book, rather he limits his discussions to questions of Ike's training and actions as a commander of Allied forces. This reviewer found little of command substance per se left out of Sixsmith's 200 odd pages relative to what is present in D'Este's 900 pages.
"Eisenhower: A Military Commander" is highly recommended as a primmer for anyone interested in Ike's military career as relates to the Second World War. Many other books provide considerable extra material as relates to Ike the man and his personality, but Sixsmith's is one of note in terms of pure military interest. 4 stars.
The administrative qualities of the Supreme Allied Commander.......2003-07-15
Overall there are several good books about Dwight Eisenhower. The author who is British paints the administrative qualities of Eisenhower and how his contributions contributed to the Victory in Europe. Eisenhower was impartial with all the forces under his command-whether they are American, British, Canadian, or French.
Sixsmith details the plans to invade North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France. With the people under his command, it is a wonder how he managed to get consensus on the goals and push the team toward victory. Sixsmith does a wonderful job of detailing all of these conflicts with the various generals and Churchill, Roosevelt, and DeGalle. Eisenhower really was a superior administrative genius and his abilities were as good or better than George Marshall. It was great we had Eisenhower on our side during WWII.
This was a short read which detailed the military aspects of Dwight Eisenhower. For more detail on his early life or later political life, one has to read elsewhere--perhaps Ambrose.

Book Description
An amazing story of an ordinary man blessed with the uncanny ability to heal others with his mind.
Matthew Manning first shot to fame with the publication of The Link, which told the story of the poltergeist activity that had centered on him since his early teens. Manning took part in a series of experiments in Toronto which confirmed his psychokinetic ability. At age 19, he found himself in demand all over the world demonstrating his uncanny abilities to disrupt electrical systems, "break" machines and produce automatic writing in languages he could not speak.
In 1977 Manning discovered his true calling-healing. In a series of amazing scientific experiments in San Antonio, Texas, he demonstrated that he was able to influence biological systems by slowing down the death of blood cells and dramatically influencing cervical cancer cells. These remarkable results convinced him that his abilities could be used to help people. For Manning, however, healing is not about effecting miracle cures, it is about using positive energy which we all have the potential to generate. The heavy spiritual overtones of his gift proved burdensome, too, with many people expecting him to be more than a mere mortal. After a lengthy encounter with alcohol, drugs and self-doubt, Manning recovered his personal equilibrium. In teaching others to reach out, he discovered his own salvation. He believes that health and well-being are inextricably bound up with the way we live our lives at a fundamental level. This belief has driven him to try to bring healing to as many people as possible and to publicize its benefits at every opportunity.
One Foot in the Stars is Matthew Manning's personal account of how he has dealt with the many challenges in his life.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but I was a little disappointed...........2002-05-18
I really wanted to like this book, and it was interesting because of the subject matter, but I felt it got bogged down in the respect that the author was constantly running around from one "controlled experiment" to another to prove his abilities to everyone. Yes, he probably does have these amazing psychic and healing abilities, but he should stop trying so hard to prove it with one "test" after another.........enough already! Another thing that bothered me was his obvious jealousy toward Uri Geller, another PSI gifted fellow, who was very popular during that time. This shouldn't be about who is better or more amazing at their gift.......the gift alone is enough. The writing style was also a little stiff. He needed to loosen up a little and enjoy life and his gift a little more. Don't be so uptight and competitive! Would anyone like to buy my copy?
One book in the stars !.......2000-01-10
As I am a receptive reader in psychology and psychic material, I guess it is fairly likely I will write a favorable report on a book like One Foot in The Stars, but this is quite an outstanding biography I believe on many levels. It began with Matthew Manning's early life as a teenager at home and school experiencing extreme Poltergeist activity, which is the subject of an earlier best selling book, called "The Link" that Matthew had published in 1974 that began his life in the media. The poltergeist activity formed a dramatic and highly interesting section at the beginning of this book. Matthew progressively finds he has the ability to channel the energy in many forms such as automatic writing and painting He later goes through a period of his life very similar to that of Uri Geller, where he produces quite startling results under laboratory conditions. Eventually Matthew finds this life is not totally fulfilling, due to the reluctance of the scientists mentality and of having to prove it over and over to each group while all the time looking for reasons after experiments to discredit results when he himself does not understand how he does it? Basically no matter how good the laboratorial results this does not prove conclusively to the world that psychic ability exists, and Matthew thinks he is not producing any thing really positive with his powers. He tries to find him self and with a peak experience finds his path as a healer. Matthew takes us through his life in healing and explains his technique telling of many startling results accompanied by letters from his patients but also at the same time he gives us his inner feelings expressing his humanity in his doubts about life and pointing to failures as well to give balance. The aspect that is refreshing is that Matthew is human just like the rest of us and he tells it as it was for him at that time in his life going through relationship and drinking problems, and he has all the doubts that every one has about life in some ways. In my personal opinion the guy deserves a slap on the back, because taking an overall view he has produced so much good from his psychic talents and his mentality I think is admirable, as he only wants to promote something in a positive fashion that produces results through whatever means. Many scientists and doctors close the door when it cannot be explained "how"?, but Matthew point out it works that's surely good enough and should be used along side traditional medicine for patients that want benefit from healing. The book is intelligently written and extremely interesting coming as it does from the horses mouth, a must read for any open minded readers interested in the subject, buy it. Alan

A book every woman should read.......2004-10-10
I read the book "A Woman's Guide to Natural Hormones" and was so excited to finally pull together so many health problems that I've been experiencing! High cholesterol, osteopenia, insomnia, lack of sex drive and sensation, depression and on and on. I had been going to my general pracitioner and gynecologist and neither could explain or cure my problems. They just added more and more medicines, each with its own set of side effects and multiplying my frustration and discomfort!
Reading this book was such a breath of fresh air that I ordered two for family members and tell everyone else I know to read it. After switching to natural hormones, I'm almost back to my old self -- I sleep well, have energy, am losing weight and have more interest in sex. AND - after adding some testosterone to the mix, I DON'T have facial hair and acne (like my GP said I would)!
Best book for making an informed decision.......2003-01-29

I find this book very helpful
and I have read it several times. She has another book called Natural Womean,Natural Menopause and this book goes into greater detail and is also easy to read.
Thanks Christine Conrad for writing these books for all of us women suffering from Provera or Premarin side effects.

Written by Dr. George Kessler, who has helped hundreds of women heal their pain and reverse degenerative problems, this is the definitive book on female knee pain. Focusing on the structural and hormonal issues that bring about knee problems in women, No More Knee Pain is a groundbreaking new approach that shows women how they can at last find relief-without drugs or surgery.

What mainstream medicine offers women with knee pain-and what it doesn't

and they turn out great! This cookbook has what I consider to be easy recipes, average time spent making them, and the taste is worth it all. My favorites so far are the cream-cheese stuffed peppers, wild rice & lentil balls with tomato sauce, and millet burgers. A variety of grains, nuts, vegetables, and seeds are used. The pictures are nice, too, if you want to make what looks good and can't tell by the text.
not for me.......2005-09-08
I ordered this book because I wanted to incorporate more vegan meals into my family's diet - however there were a lot of ingredients that I am not familiar with and the recipes looked like they would be time consuming. We have 4 children ages 8 and under and I don't have the time to shop for "special" ingredients or a lot of time to spend preparing meals that our children may not eat. I'm sure if you are totally vegan these recipes may be very tasty, and easier to prepare since you may have the ingredients as staples in your household already. This book was not a proper fit for our busy lifestyle with kids.
