Book Description

Major General Don Carlos Buell stood among the senior Northern commanders early in the Civil War, led the Army of the Ohio in the critical Kentucky theater in 1861-62, and helped shape the direction of the conflict during its first years. Only a handful of Northern generals loomed as large on the military landscape during this period, and Buell is the only one of them who has not been the subject of a full-scale biography.

A conservative Democrat, Buell viewed the Civil War as a contest to restore the antebellum Union rather than a struggle to bring significant social change to the slaveholding South. Stephen Engle explores the effects that this attitude—one shared by a number of other Union officers early in the war—had on the Northern high command and on political-military relations. In addition, he examines the ramifications within the Army of the Ohio of Buell's proslavery leanings.

A personally brave, intelligent, and talented officer, Buell nonetheless failed as a theater and army commander, and in late 1862 he was removed from command. But as Engle notes, Buell's attitude and campaigns provided the Union with a valuable lesson: that the Confederacy would not yield to halfhearted campaigns with limited goals.

5 out of 5 stars The Enigma of Buell.......2006-11-07

Stephen Engle's biography on Don Carlos Buell is an excellent look at one of the more important and overlooked Union generals. Engle did not tackle an easy subject. There were a number of reasons that Buell had to wait a century after his death for a biographer. While Buell was an important figure in the war, he did not leave a number of papers and, with the exception of the botched Perryville campaign, he never commanded the army during a major battle. While he played an important part at Shiloh and Corinth, Buell's roles remained secondary. Engle reveals Buell to have been a very self confident and contained man who simply had no charisma and, with his disdain of volunteers, he remained a leader who simply could not and would not connect with his troops. Add Buell's conservative politics to the mix and one can see why the Lincoln administration grew frustrated with Buell and sacked him towards the end of 1862. Engle appreciates Buell's strengths as a commander. Buell was an excellent organizer and disciplinarian but his conservative politics and lack of aggression ensured his removal. Buell comes off as the McClellan of the West and one is not surprised to see they were friends (so much so that Buell was tempted to write a biography of Little Mac after the war). While aware of Buell's failings, Engle also provides an interesting account of his subject's role at Shiloh and offers a good deal of insight on the frustrating and often bewildering Union campaigns against Corinth and East Tennessee. While Engle provides a solid account of Buell's rise in the old army, his account of Buell's postwar life seems a bit rushed but, with Buell having been a private man, Engle may have simply not had the material to flesh out this last part. Engle's account of Buell's court of inquiry is interesting but could have been drawn out, especially in light of the Porter case at the same time and other political developments. Still, Civil War scholars will find this book to be of great use as they try to grasp with why the Union did not win an early victory. Engle offers one of the best Civil War biographies of recent times on a mostly untouched subject.

There is a factual error in the book. W. B. Carter was the brother of Samuel P. Carter, not the cousin.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Look At An Overlooked Civil War General.......2001-09-30

A great biography on the life and military service of Don Carlos Buell. Engle takes the reader on an in-depth journey into Buell's early life and up through his service in the Western Theater of the Civil War. It covers with careful detail the military actions of Buell, including his taking and occupation of Nashville, Tennessee in 1862. After finishing this extremely well-written, well-thoughtout book, one can see the importance that Buell had on American history. I highly recommend this biography to anyone interested in the Civil War. It does not disappoint. A great read from start to finish.

4 out of 5 stars Much Needed Biography.......2000-06-28

There are few army commanders from the Civil War that have lacked a full biographical treatment, and up to the present, that gap was nowhere greater than with Major General Don Carlos Buell, who commanded the Army of the Ohio for approximately one year. During that time, he was at the head of the forces that captured Nashville, fought at Shiloh, commanded a wing on the advance to Corinth, and participated in Braxton Bragg's Kentucky invasion that ended with the Battle of Perryville on October 8, 1862.

If one could have polled Abraham Lincoln in early 1862 insofar as which of his army commanders had the greatest "slows," the President might well have been hard-pressed with choosing between eastern commander George B. McClellan and Buell. Indeed, the two (McClellan and Buell) were linked in a common bond of friendship, mutual respect, and a belief in the pursuit of a limited war. Charged with the task of developing a campaign to satisfy Lincoln's desire to "free" eastern Tennessee Unionists from Confederate rule, Buell simply would not, or could not, engage in a campaign with risks he felt were too great. Finally, as his forces ponderously closed in on Chattanooga, Confederate leader Braxton Bragg stole the initiative from Buell, and engaged in a bizarre race back into Kentucky, with the Ohio River city of Louisville the seeming prize. After the seemingly incomprehensible draw at the Battle of Perryville, Buell allowed Bragg to escape back across the Cumberland Mountains, and finally Lincoln and the Washington Administration had had enough. Buell was relieved of command, never to serve in a United States uniform in the field again.

Were there a sizeable cache of Buell war-time correspondence, as for instance, exists for McClellan, the job of Buell's biographer would doubtless been much easier. But Buell rarely expressed himself to others, including subordinates. Much of the interpretation, therefore, was left to Stephen Engle from the official documents and records left as a result of the war. Even so, Engle paints a realistic picture of this Union enigma, and places Buell in the overall context of Federal strategy and Army politics. It would have been nice, for example, to understand Buell's thoughts on slavery, since (his wife was a Southerner, and brought slaves to the marriage) he owned slaves prior to, and during the war. Since Tennessee military governor Andrew Johnson, and Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton accused Buell of being a Rebel sympathizer, such understanding would have gone far to help place Buell's beliefs in the treatment of civilians and civilian property while he commanded in Johnston's state. But without such a written record, it was up to Engle to draw conclusions on his own.

Part of the problem in understanding Buell rests with the fact that to do so, one must come to grips with his two major foils - friend George B. McClellan, and nemesis Henry W. Halleck. And here, Engle does a very nice job of bringing in these two other men, and positioning Buell within the context of the three men's goals and ambitions (in Buell's case, it was more one of no ambitions versus the lofty ambitions of the other two). Here, perhaps, is the strength of the work, and Engle well balances this very disparate trio.

The Don Carlos Buell that emerges in this work is a man sometimes incomprehensible for his attitudes and actions, but at least understandable for his consistency in those very attributes. Don Carlos Buell: Most Promising of All (a line written by Federal General John Pope, of all people) is a must read for anyone interested in the early history of the western theater, and the man that figured so prominently in it

4 out of 5 stars don carlos buell.......2000-04-09

This book reveals how Buell became a leading general in the early war. His marriage to General Mason's widow -- a slave holding, politically ambitious woman -- shaped his early career. His friendship to fellow West Pointer, George McClellan, helped immensely.

If you are interested in the politics of the early war years, then this is the book for you since Buell like his sponsor, McClellan, was reluctant to bring on battle with the Confederates. His many letters with Little Mac and Halleck show how the master bureaucrat -- Halleck -- wins the day from both McClellan and Buell.

Buell has one of the finest Generals under his command in George Thomas and yet finds it difficult to send him into battle. He had the McClellan problem of seeing a "lion" in front of him. Halleck allows the "loose cannon," US Grant, to fight his battles. Halleck then takes the credit for Grant's deeds.

Engle does a good job presenting a look at an honest general who tried to do his job as he saw it and how he was taught to fight at West Point. The problem was that this was not a typical war and the principles of Jomini and Napoleon were not applicable to the Civil War. Grant understood this and moved up. Buell did not and Lincoln moved him out. Buell could not handle Andrew Johnson, the Military Governor, and Lincoln had to choose between them. West Point never taught you how to handle the political side of the war.

Having graduated from West Point I enjoyed Engle's coverage of the cadet days and the correspondence with old instructors and Academy interactions. Some might not and many bustle at the West Point Protective Association at work. It certainly worked for good and evil during the Civil War as this book points out.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Helpful Book for Teens.......2006-02-23

This book is wonderful. My son passed away at the age of 24 and my 15 year old daughter was finding it hard to find her way through this difficult grieving process. The book touched upon so many important and pertinent facts such as your grief is unique, just like your relationship to the person you lost is unique. Whether it's the loss of a sibling, parent, grandparent or other person in a teen's life, I think this book really addresses many of the issues that teens are concerned with when dealing with a loss in their lives.

Wolfelt has written this book in an easy-read format, making it not only easy to pick up and thumb through, but the bulletted pages make it easier for teens to read. As a School Social Work intern, the activities listed on the bottom of each page are excellent sources of ideas for use with students with whom I work.

These ideas are active, door-opening way to help teens. Many parents and professionals assume that therapy is always the "fix", which can often only make teens feel different, abnormal, and "sick". The learning style of adolescents is often to learn better through experiential exercises than through talking, which makes these ideas more useful than traditional therapy. These ideas apply to helping teens struggling with any kind of loss or stress, and are significant tools that will help adolescents establish coping mechanisms for other areas of their life as well. Especially good are the ideas for establisihng rituals, gathering keepsakes and using massage to alleviate stress. These tools will help kids establish a foundation for problem-solving in healthy ways. --a High School Social Services worker

I have bought a LOT of cookbooks over time and this is by far my favorite. The recipes are easy to follow, the ingredients can be found at any grocery store, the flavors are amazing, and although it is a vegetarian cookbook the recipes easily convert to meat entrees for your meat-loving guests. I have tried about 5 or 6 of the recipes (some twice!) and my husband and I have loved every one of them. I am thoroughly looking forward to trying the rest.

              4 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2007-05-07

I ordered this book because many of my vegetarian cookbooks were mostly appetizer or "light lunch" based and this one seemed to contain more "hearty" meals. I was right, it's wonderful! The recipes (though I haven't tried all that many yet) are varied and provide an actual meal as opposed to a "snack". My only complaint is that there aren't photos for every recipe (something I generally appreciate in a cookbook) but there are still several photos and descriptions of each recipe at the top of the page.

              5 out of 5 stars ok recipes.......2007-01-19

some of the recipes in this book are hit and miss. most tend to not have very many spices which makes the dishes quite plain.
some dishes are quite good though.
i like it that it doesn't strictly focus on tofu like some vegetarin cookbooks tend to do.

              5 out of 5 stars Easy, Delicious - Meatless!.......2006-11-08

I got this book from our local library so that I could find some recipes to cook for my in-laws who are, obviously, vegetarians. I tried several of the recipes and although we didn't love all the recipes they were all very easy to execute and the instructions are amazingly precise. An excellent cookbook even for those who aren't vegetarians.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to fix and kids will eat recipes.......2006-09-29

Not the healthiest recipes but perhaps it's a beginning if you want to change your lifestyle and your families as well. I'm sure they are tasty recipes. These are also easy to fix. Once your family is used to these, introduce healthy recipes from other cookbooks.

I love Betty Crocker but I know there are better and healthier recipes out there.

              4 out of 5 stars NICE.......2007-02-13

For my sister but i looked in it and it had some delicious recipes in it. Not really healty-healthy but wholesome meals. 8-)

4 out of 5 stars Simple, quick vegetarian recipes.......2006-08-30

This is a great cookbook for vegetarians who don't have a lot of time to cook and don't mind cooking with packaged items like canned beans and frozen vegetables. It would also be useful for someone easing into vegetarian eating, or someone trying to ease kids into vegetarian eating! It has lots of good recipes for soups, stews, and chilis (Curried Sweet Potato and Lentil Stew is one of my favorites, as is Red Beans and Rice Chili). Some other recipes I really enjoyed are Vegetable Jambalaya, Wild Rice Frittata, Rice Noodles with Peanut Sauce, and Pizza Casserole. A downside to this cookbook is that many of the dishes call for white rice, which I try to avoid. I found that in most cases it wasn't possible to substitute brown rice, which was a disappointment for me.

5 out of 5 stars vegetarian recipes for busy people.......2006-06-08

I love this cookbook. I use it often, and I have not been disappointed with any of the many recipes I have tried. I cook for non vegetarians often- and the dishes that I have prepared from this cookbook are universally well received. I have vegetarian cookbooks that are much more time and ingredient intensive- but I use them much less often than this one because I work full time and have little time for meal prep. For some this cookbook will not appeal in that many of the recipes call for prepackaged ingredients. To me, that is part of the appeal- there are a number of delicious recipes in this cookbook that I can prepare using foods in my pantry- no shopping needed! I particularly love the enchilada bake; the lentil-rice casserole (which is absolutely fabulous, considering the few ingredients, you wouldn't think it would be as good as it is- try it! you'll be amazed) I could not survive without this cookbook. Recipes appealing to kids, older adults- and even my fussy co-workers who think veggie food is weird. I think this cookbook is one you'll use again and again- if you're short on time, and like great tasting food.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent as a first veggie recipe book.......2006-03-06

This is the first cookbook I bought as a vegetarian, and I was impressed. We've made some of the dishes two or three times. Simple instructions, and even substituting instructions. Easy to find ingredients. There's nothing to complain about other than the book is getting a little messy since I am not a neat cook. ;) I didn't mind the meat substitution instructions, either, because my husband is not vegetarian, and also, if it says "you can add chicken" I add tofu. ;)

              3 out of 5 stars Average book.......2005-10-25

Compared to the other Betty Crocker cook book, I was not as impressed with this book as others who wrote reviews. I was disappointed that there was not a dessert section, and annoyed that there is an inclusion for how to make it a 'meat' dish. Overall it is okay, but my other veggie books are much better.
